An Talla by Loch Ness in Highland

BEST BREAKFAST IN SCOTLAND!!!! If there was a 6 star button I’d have chosen that. Amazing staff which is great but the breakfast……. OMG!!! We have both been all over the world and we have eaten our fair share of cooked breakfasts but this is number 1 for sure. If you are within 100 miles of Loch Ness then you have to eat here. Amazing we will be back.

The food we had was nice, I'm vegan and ordered the vegan coronation chicken sandwich. We asked the waitress if the chips were vegan and she told us they weren't, only items listed (ve) on the menu are. Beware fellow vegans! I always assume that items such as chips would be safe to eat and free from animal products but not at An Talla. They also offer plant-based milks (not listed on the menu) and the hot chocolate powder is dairy-free but the chocolate sprinkles for the top are not so make sure to ask for it without those. I hope they will consider to start serving vegan chips, a very easy swap, and also add the plant milks to the menu and adjust labelling so various dietary options are more clear.

We were staying in the Lock Keepers cottage & enjoyed a few visits to An Talla restaurant. Lovely inside, particularly cosy beside the fire & Christmas tree. Good selection of food, cakes & Urquart brekky delicious & fills you up for the day. Lovely gift shop attached that’s worth a visit.

We came in July for a birthday lunch out. It was lovely from start to finish! I had the most tastiest fish goujons and chips and curry sauce! So much so, I've been back a couple of times for them. We sat outside and ate out lunch in the glorious Scottish sunshine. What a beautiful setting in is to have lunch, followed by a wander along the canal.

We visited the cafe after a cruise on Loch Ness which was also fabulous. We ordered food, I had the Haddock Butty and my mum had the Macaroni Cheese. Both dishes arrived after a short wait, we had a few sips of our coffees before they arrived. My Haddock Butty was delicious, the batter of the fish was so light and airy, the fish soft and fresh, my fried were crunchy too. My mums Mac and cheese was very cheesy and tasty too. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the restaurant was clean and tidy with a nice feel to it. We loved our visit and would recommend the food. LOVED it!!!

Popped in for lunch during October, an off peak season and outwith any school holidays. The menu had toasties - haggis and cheese or black pudding and cheese were included. I asked if the toasties were made freshly to order and was told yes. I then asked for a cheese toastie - specifically a haggis and cheese without the haggis. This they could not make for me. Seems ridiculous. Toilets are also disappointing - not clean.

Food is delicious, presentation appealing, quick to the table, staff lovely and efficient. Highly recommended. One of the best meals we’ve had in Scotland. Lentil soup as good as my own!

Had a wonderful time on a short cruise and decided to stop by the cafe for lunch. Ordered a chicken noodle soup with bread. Worse mistake. We were hungry so just tried to get the bits of chicken out of the bowl. Super sweet chicken noodle soup. No indication on the special board that it’s sweet. Definitely not what one expects when ordering chicken noodle soup. First surprise was the colour. Super Sweet Brown Chicken Noodle Soup. According to the staff everyone raved about it…no…people were in shock from the sugar overdose!!!

Great restaurant and gift shop. Great selection of food. Really bright and spacious. Don't miss the Highland Coos in the field outside.

This has to be our favourite place to visit, whether for coffee and cake or lunch. It’s simply top class in every way. The staff are, without exception, a delight, always welcoming and helpful…especially for the 2 fab Irish Setters which normally accompany us! An Talla is definitely their favourite coffee shop! The coffees are superb, and the food out of this world. Must admit I find it hard to go past the chicken shwarma which is delicious, but, whatever you choose, you won’t be disappointed. Well done to all the staff who make our regular visits such a delight. We know of lots of locals who, like us, head out to An Talla regularly, and we’ve also talked to lots of tourists from all over the world who have loved their visits to this gem of a place.

I am local and regularly visit An Talla, often for coffee after a dog walk but we occasionally treat ourselves to lunch too. I can't find fault with anything in this lovely coffee shop/restaurant. Firstly, the staff are always pleasant and welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble. Secondly, the flat white and Americano coffee are always good. Breakfast and cakes are to die for! Thirdly, the cooked hot food is excellent. We especially love the schwarma chicken loaded fries, mac cheese and haddock but it is all pretty good. Fourthly, An Talla tries to support other quality local businesses wherever it can and that is very much appreciated in an age where buying bulk and cheaper is often the norm. I've seen some negative reviews recently and just don't understand how some views of a place can be so different. Sure it is very busy especially in the summer when there are bus loads of tourists around but we have always been advised if service is going to be slower than usual and that's always helpful. Keep up the good work An Talla Team! We (and our Irish Setters) LOVE you all!!

I've visited An Talla often for breakfast or coffee but haven't had lunch there in a while. The menu has changed since I was there last but i was not disappointed. The salt and chilli chicken skewers were amazing. Loved the dipping sauces and the side salad as well. The staff were friendly and efficient as always and the meal was really good value for money.

Lovely restaurant just outside of Inverness. We have been here many times. It’s always busy but they offer a buzzer system to wait for a table if they are full. Was told 45 mins one day so went for a wander in the wee shop and was buzzed after just 15 mins which was good. You go up and order at the counter and the food is brought to you at your table. Food is always hot and fresh. Macaroni cheese is a must! Also dog friendly which is great!

Firstly I should point out that I'm local and have been going to An Talla off and on siince it opened. ,I rarely, if ever leave bad reviews preffering to vote with my future absense than bad mouth a buisiness however this is the third time I've felt the need to leave a bad review for An Talla ( I resisted these temptaions unril today) When it first opened we were regular visitors for an "All Day Breakfast" maybe coming once a week for several months until the day we arrived at ten minutes to noon and were told they weren't serving "All Day Breakfasts" at that time, not until Noon. Fair enough I suppose although I though 11.50 was part of the whole (or all) day we tried to place our order anyway knowing we wouldn't be served straight away, not until noon. The staff member at the counter knew us well from regular visits and was obviously embarrassed, appologised, knowing we were regulars and offered to make our breakfasts anyway, she'd do them herself. She weas bluntly told by management she wasn't allowed to do this. Fair enough again, we'd order a coffee, leave the order anyway to be dealt with at noon as it was nearly noon (which I assumed was part of all day). This, we were bluntly informed, was againsat the rules and we'd have to come back to the counter in 10 minutes and place the order then. We decided to vote with our feet and didn't go back for year or so, I honestly can't recall what breach of the rather stringent rules we inadveredly broke that occasion but we decided to gove the place the wide bearth due to the management meritted until last year, persuaded by a friend to give the place another chance. (May I add the staff have allways been great) In the last year we had a few good meals and went back again today. ' The menu said "Lunch served from 12.00" My wife tried to place our order at 11.53, there were three staff members at the counter doing nothing and no queue yet not one was prepared to take the order even though we were well aware that we wouldn't be served before the noon deadline. Three strikes and you are out in my opinion, we won't be back and advise anyone expecting an all day breakfast at the wrong time to try elsewwhere. We'll be going to Utopia in Inverness instead.

Stopped here for lunch today beautiful location and friendly staff, we ate the haddock and chips and side salad food was of the highest standard and a large portion, afterwards we strolled around the gift shop and then had a walk along the waters edge lovely afternoon, would definitely recommend this place.

An Talla serves a really great range of food for breakfast/lunches- at good prices for the large portions. Chips are wonderful and crispy. Staff interest in customers is quite patchy as others have noted. Only two issues that prevent a 5 star review: on every visit we have watched the staff carefully wipe down the table top first (often sticky, some crumbs/debris) and then use that same cloth to wipe down the seats! I do not want to sit on seats covered with the debris from the table! Also, we have to make specific plans as to what warm clothing we will wear, as the place is just so cold - so it actually feels very unwelcoming. Still, a great option for eating a full meal or a snack, before or after a walk by the canal.

Was recommended by a friend so we went for morning brunch before a light walk with our baby. The place is fresh and vibrant and a nice atmosphere. Food was lovely and well worth visiting. I’m sure we’ll be back!

Visited Friday for breakfast before a walk. Food was lovely, highly recommend "The Stack" Chatty friendly staff, very knowledgeable when asked about the area. Would highly recommend a visit.

I’m not one for writing reviews but felt it was necessary to in this case. I have been to An Talla a few times and must say the food has always been superb, cannot fault the chefs at all. However, the service and atmosphere were terrible. The younger staff seemed overwhelmed and stressed and the older staff were rude and seemed very unorganised. The hygiene standards have dropped massively since I was last here, tables were very sticky and the cutlery was dirty. I certainly won’t return, this needs to be sorted before you lose more customers.

Food & coffee are good but having to queue to order food & coffee is totally illogical. Why not have staff wait tables leading to a faster turnover & this more money? Didn’t want to queue to order a 2nd coffee as it would’ve been another 15 min wait.

Very dissatisfied with the service and attitudes of the staff - for a dog friendly cafe it is very obvious who the regulars were …. Maximum of 5 dogs unless you know the staff. Safe to say we didn’t wait for lunch and will definitely not be back!

The overall experience of An Talla is excellent. A warm welcome in the restaurant and a very good menu for lunch. The Burger of the Week was superb - really well presented plate of food that is a credit to the kitchen. The fish and chips was beautifully fresh and again well presented. The food and service was first class and we left with the thought that this is a top choice for a good lunch and being so close to Inverness well worth local support. Will definitely return soon.

Multiple visits here, we enjoy the tea, coffee and cake, sometimes the cake selection is limited to one option for gluten free. Good seating outdoors which is a bit sheltered. Clean toilets. Nice setting for a small stroll beside the canal. Can be busy with tourists affected by "tourist brain", coming from and going to boat trips on Loch Ness. Watch out in the car park. Thank you to the owners for moving the war memorial sympathetically during your renovations. As having a connection to it we appreciate your consideration.

We stopped in before and after our boat trip. The gift shop is lovely with tasteful items, the bathroom facilities are superb, and the cate is excellent. I had the chicken shwarma which was perfectly spicy and flavorful. Food came out pretty quickly.

We were a party of 8 that had just done the Canal and Loch tour. The restaurant was very busy given the boat had just disembarked but the staff still found time to seat us together quite quickly. Every one in our party enjoyed the food and drink. I was informed the Mac and Cheese was exceptionally good and I enjoyed the Venison burger. The sauce used on the salad was so nice that we bought 4 bottles from the gift shop.

Awful, will not return. The girl at the coffee machine had an attitude problem, the staff appeared to have been given no direction or orchestration, most of them wandering around aimlessly. The cakes were stale/ dry and the coffee servers need barista training!

The place was really busy as it's a tourist mecca this time of year. But the young staff did an amazing job and kept up with everyone. We had the macaroni cheese which was absolutely fantastic, and it didn't cost the earth either. Great views around too. Would recommend.
