Every single gluten free blog said to come here so we came out of our way to come here and unfortunately left a little disappointed. The service was ok and the food we got was tasty, but so many things weren’t available... 1. I ordered a cocktail then was told by the waitress later they weren’t doing cocktails today. Even if the bar tender wasn’t in, I could see the manager behind the car who I’m sure could have made a quick drink. Seemed weird for a Sunday. 2. I haven’t had a scotch egg in over 10 years (since discovered my allergy) and was so excited to finally eat one (part of the reason we made the journey). When I ordered, I was told they were all out of scotch eggs today. As someone who is gf and made a special trip to have something, it was soooo disappointing it wasn’t even available. 3. Both of us ordered two different roasts. Both didn’t come with the pigs in blankets or the cauliflower cheese. My partner ordered the turkey specifically for the stuffing which also wasn’t there. When I inquired about the stuffing, the manager said they had run out and offered to cover the cost of our additional appetiser instead. Even so, it would have been helpful to know when ordering that a main element of the dish was unavailable as we would have ordered something else. If a place is unreliable, it’s difficult to return… I had such high hopes, but maybe I caught them on an off day?

Went for a family Sunday lunch last weekend. The Angel has new landlords and we were made very welcome. Fires were lit and there was a great atmosphere about the place. A big improvement on the previous owners. Food was superb and generous portion sizes. Many thanks to Sammy, Ann and head chef Ryan. We will definitely be back

Staff and service great, overall the food was just OK. I had the deep fried camenbert, it had been fried but then it had cooled whit waiting on sobering else so it had solidified and wasn't the gooey crispy starter it should have been. The fish chowder was good but the potatoes were too big in my personal opinion and felt like you grabbed them from the veg sides that go out with sunday roasts and dropped them in there, and the other dishes apart from the kids chicken strips were good to. The chicken stripes were dry and overly sour from the buttermilk they have been sat in, the batter was dry and thin so for a kid meal wasn't great. Timing seems to be the issue in the pass here. My cheffing exposures tells me that when I get a plate of food where one side of the plate is hot and the other is just warm it's been sat under the salamander/lights on pass for too long waiting on other things. Could be brilliant just get you timing right. Remember, good is the enemy of great. Don't settle for good as you will never be great.

Been coming here for years. Its always been our go to place for worry free food on a coeliac diet. The staff have always been on point and we had great pride in showing this place off to our friends and family which created many family meals down at the angel. However since the beginning of this year, the quality of food has really gone down hill. Not sure if it was due to a change in chef, but the food had always been extremely high quality in the past. It's what kept us coming back 10 times a year minimum. - birthday parties, general gatherings and pops ins from passing by. It appears we arnt the only ones who feel this way, after hearing that the angel are taking away their 100% gluten free promise, this was the final nail in the coffin for us. We had one last meal there today as a goodbye to our old regular and it was by far the worst food experience to date. The saving grace was the starters, We ordered 3 starters, tempura prawn - perfect, halloumi bites - good and scotch egg - amazing, but also the last one they had which left much dissapointment at the table. When it came to the mains we couldnt be more disappointed as a group. 1 roast potato, 1 carrot, 1 sprout, 1 yorkshire pudding that resembled a blown up square for each plate. minimal gravy and piles of anything else to fill. I'm almost 100% sure ingredients were being rationed and old stock being used to beef the plate up and to clear the remainder of the 100% gluten free menu stock. The beef was tough as old boots and dry, the turkey dry, the two pork dishes tasted completely different, no pigs in blankets even though it stated on the menu they contained them and even when we enquired, we were given 2 for all of us and told (they should have only come with the turkey). When we requested extra gravy for nearly everyone due to the lack every plate had, we got one gravy boat that didnt touch most of what we were after but didnt want to cause more of a fuss. When it came to the bill, we had 3 mains removed off the party which was very considerate, and why i still give the service a 3 star. But overall its such a shame to see this place go down the routes it has. excluding the diet that really put this place on the map and what became a gem of that community. We hope the choices made give the results needed for this place to continue operating, hope it all the best for the future, and hope one day it returns back to its peak.

We haven’t been to The Angel for 18 months as it lost its appeal under the last owners, it was cold, the fires weren’t lit and the atmosphere had significantly changed! Thankfully the new owners appear to be turning all that round! It was welcoming, the fires were lit, the service was amazing! The food was brilliant too…thanks to Ryan in the kitchen! Our plates were full of tasty, wholesome food! It was lovely to be back! Good luck to the new owners who will hopefully get the locals back and make the pub as good as it was under the last but one owners! We will definitely be back.

As per their Facebook there are new owners and it will no longer be 100% GF in the new year. Our second time eating here on the way back from Whitby. I have celiac disease. It is so nice to be able to order and have anything I want and not have to worry and over explain why I need it that way. My husband can eat anything. We both love it here. He had the seafood chowder and I had fish and chips. Everything was excellent. The service, atmosphere and food.

We have dined at The Angel a few times over the years, but not in the last 18 months. On looking at some recent reviews I was apprehensive about visiting and so was wonderfully surprised with our delicious experience. I had the gammon which was well cooked and with a full selection of complimentary additions. The chips and onion rings were particularly good. The puddings were tasty and a generous size with each course being served at a gentle pace so that we didn’t feel rushed to order nor eat. The staff were very cheerful and helpful especially with the little changes that we requested to one or two items. Not many people there today so was very quiet. Thank you all at The Angel. Dietary restrictions: Had the Sunday dinner but the gluten free Yorkshire puddings were inedible. Largely uncooked in the middle and really sad. Not good for a place that bases it's reputation on the gluten free regime. Food: 2/5 | Service: 2/5

Jekyll & Hyde eatery .......... I posted about a lovely midweek meal that we had but I then took friends for a Sunday Lunch and what a difference. Poorly cooked dinner especially the Yorkshire puddings which shouldn't have been served and some veg. which was still at leat a minute off being 'al dente' as it was cold in the middle. Poor service as they forgot the coffee and the portion sizes of the desserts was totally different to 3 weeks earlier. I emailed as didn't want to post a poor review if there were extenuating circumstances but they have not replied. Overall we paid 'top dollar' for what was, below par pub grub. I have left my original review below but adjusted the star rating to include the recent visit. We have dined at The Angel a few times over the years, but not in the last 18 months. very expensive for not very good food. starters 3 prawns for 9 quid. mixed grill medium rare steak was medium well and full of gristle. chicken dry and tough. the lasagne was ok in flavour but very rubbery not a nice texture at all and lacked beef. the brisket was almost none existent and came with a batch sticker in it. the Mac and cheese was awful as tho the sauce was made from powder as was very powdery. pana cotta missing the biscuit. the lemon meringue very unique and not in a good way a sloppy powdery mess torched instead of a nice meringue baked in the oven. very slow service for an almost empty restaurant very strange for a restraunt to be so empty at 7 pm on a Saturday evening, obviously the poor food and expensive prices by has a lot to do with it. If you like good quality food at reasonable price don't bother coming here. Made comment on Facebook they blocked me

Absolutely superb. We felt looked after from start to finish. Great menu selection. Vegitarian baked fresh pie, 30 minutes but worth the wait. Lunch portions of Fish & Chips and Seafood Chowder did not disappoint and were just the right size for lunch. Sirloin with Peppercorn sauce was melt in the mouth. The desserts, Lemon Meringue, Fruit Crumble and a pretty spectacular Sherry Trifle were equally as pleasing. This is also a gluten free venue. Thank you to the lovely Gentleman that looked after us and The Angel for a lovely afternoon.

Hassled to leave at the end of our meal even though there was nobody needing the table, loads of free tables. We asked to split the bill so we could each pay for what we had, and as there were only 2 of us, this wasn't hard. The waitress didn't do the maths right then when we asked again she tutted, pulled a face and gave it to someone else, said "you do this I don't get it!" The food was certainly not the best quality. My friend was not at all impressed by her roast. We left when the second person came to ask us to take the bill. We were still drinking and had only just finished eating. We both said we would not go there again.

I use to absolutely love this place and we have been coming for years as I’m gluten free and the food would always be lovely but on our recent visit it was extremely disappointing. I had the lasagne which was SO dry I couldn’t eat it, the two burgers which were ordered were very dry too and one of the steaks wasn’t very nice. We had no check backs on the food or we would have told them at the time. So when they came to clear the plates I mentioned it then to the supervisor and he didn’t say very much, didn’t even offer to discount the bill or offer a drink on the house or anything so I’m really disappointed and won’t be returning. I’m not sure if they have a new chef but the standard of food has dropped.

Dissapointing, £20 for a roast with 2 slivers of cold beef. A single piece of cauliflower and one single carrot along with the spoonful of mash, yorkshire pudding and green beans. Food arriving at different times, meals finished before others have even received theirs. Overall negative experience which is a shame to see this place going downhill after being good for years. Also playing house/dance music on a sunday afternoon which doesn’t really fit the atmosphere if you ask me. Only saving grace is pub was nice and clean and front of house were pleasant enough

Booked for a party of 5 and on arrival the first thing we noticed was how cool it felt in the dining room. Then we noticed that blankets were provided for anyone to use who were finding it a bit chilly. Never encountered that before in a restaurant. After the starters were finished, which were very satisfactory, the main courses eventually arrived. Having dined at The Angel on several previous occasions and been very satisfied with the food that was served we knew not to expect fast service as the food is freshly prepared for each meal. When the main courses arrived they had been put straight on to cold plates and as a consequence were just warm at best. One meal, the 8oz steak (at £28.00) had to be returned as the steak was cold. Three of us had the mixed grill (at £30.00 each) which again was served on cold plates and was quickly cooling down. The food would have been excellent had it been served hot and on warm plates. The deserts that we had, sticky toffee puddings, were very nice, but at £8.00 each, were a bit on the pricey side. The meal would have been first class had it not been let down by the cool dining room and the not very warm food. For the prices charged this should have been a much more enjoyable experience. I will give The Angel another try, especially as truly gluten free restaurants are few and far between, but if I have another experience like this one it will have to be the last which would be a great shame.

Having dined at The Angel for many, many years we will never return. The service and the majority of the food was diabolical. The starters were mostly good. When the mains arrived we had to ask for cutlery which seemed a hassle for the waitress. The steak was cold, along with the mushrooms which were also like rubber yet the tomato was so hot it burnt the roof of your mouth. The gammon hard and salty, like leather. Chips were covered in salt. The prawn and chorizo starter was not available, however we were not told this when given the menus which delayed our meal even further (table booked for 8pm, starters received 9.45pm) also the Chowder not available .When making the booking we asked if the Chowder was still on the menu as it is a family favourite we were assured it would be! When we complained we'd never seen such aggression. Not once did the manager apologize, he declared all our issues were our own fault. What an appalling front of house. The mains we returned uneaten were removed from the bill but that's 3 birthdays and a wedding anniversary ruined. We left feeling hungry, disappointed and very saddened...Never to return

The Meat Pie had a nice crust, the contents were bland and uninteresting, the gravy was very good but the cheese "Extra" on the lightly cooked fries has either never seen Parmesan or has spent so long stored grated that it no longer resembles a flavourful product of any kind. First meal ok but only one al la carte choice for a vegan. Second try was the Sunday roast which was disappointing. Nut roast very tasty, roast potatoes almost non existant, just 3 very very small pieces, asked if there were any more and told no as there were not enough available, those on my plate were dry and tough... too much mash for me, very few vegetables, two small broccoli flowers, half a carrot and half a parsnip that was a bit hard and undercooked. Mojito cocktail that was awful. Shame really as being gluten free this was an exciting find. I dont think I will be back. Front of house staff need to be more welcoming when guests arrive. Everything gluten free! Perfect, love a menu that I can choose anything from and try from other people's plates in the party

I have been to The Angel several times over the last year or so and every single visit has been amazing! However I have to particularly leave a review today as the maple glazed pork loin special that was on this weekend (August bank holiday weekend) NEEDS to be on the menu all the time! What an absolutely stunning meal. Thank you as always to everyone at The Angel! ❤️

Great gluten friendly menu so fabulous for coeliacs. Dog friendly too. Conservatory can get a little warm but there are lots of other tables in the bar area.

Wonderfully warm welcome from the staff and owners. Great selection of draft beers and wines. Delicious dinner. The arancini and sourdough stater was sublime. An absolute must try for anyone visiting the area. The kitchen is fully gluten free, too.

Fabulous fabulous fabulous ! It was amazing to go into a restaurant and have anything I wanted from the menu. The only problem. was I wanted everything on the menu. I wish this was closer to Stockport so I could go on a regular basis. I visited with 2 family members who are not coeliac, and they enjoyed the food as much as I did.

Great place. We had a few recommendations for it as everything is gluten-free, and so we decided to give it a try. We were impressed even as we arrived. Lovely grounds and tastefully decorated inside. Very friendly staff. And dogs are allowed, too, so there were several 4-legged guests to coo over. And the food was a delight. We ordered far too much getting carried away that everything was GF.

First time into this previously regular haunt since change of ownership. Our food was excellent and we were glad they still had the wonderful seafood chowder.

This is a lovely pub serving ONLY gluten free food, and with a great reputation for doing it really well. We only called in for a snack so didnt really test the food, but both the piri piri fries and the parmesan fries were excellent. Very traditional cosy ambiance in here, staff were very quick and welcoming. I stopped to fuss someone's dog and everyone seemed very friendly and chatty. The toilets were clean, and when I saw through a staff only door towards the food prep area, it all looked reassuringly good there too.

You know a restaurant is doing well when it's packed on a Thursday evening! The food is delicious and all locally sourced from the Sheffield area.

A lovely pub with welcoming staff and great food. Other pubs take note: you can offer excellent meals without gluten and, in the process, attract new and loyal customers.

Note acceptor broke and has been for around 3 months customer service is poor rtp is extremely lower than average gave up on this place months ago come back to try again and it's even worse. Will not visit again will stick to admiral casino instead. Also see footfall has dropped nothing ever changes. Full of students blowing student loans.

Myself and 5 other family members came for Christmas Dinner, 2 of the 4 soups had to go back because they were only lukewarm, although the main course was nice again some were hot while mine was only hot enough to eat but going cold by the time I got to the end. Everyone was disappointed that the only potatoes were frozen roast, would have been nice to have had some mash as well, I do like my vegetables al dente the sprouts were too raw even for me. On the plus side, the day was very well organised, there was space between the tables so we didn't feel close to the neighbouring tables, there courses were spaced out so that we had time to have a social space between courses and at no point did we ever feel rushed. The staff were polite and amenable and we did leave a decent tip to show our appreciation for them working on Christmas Day. However with all this in mind it is the food that is the most important and due to feeling it was lacking we would visit again but not on Christmas Day.

We heard that the Angel Inn had re-opened under new management, and that the pub had been given a make-over and were now doing really good food - so we thought we would go and check it out! We went along mid-afternoon on Thursday 25th January, 2024, the place is very clean, warm and welcoming, a nice, cosy and relaxed atmosphere. Louise the manager, who we took-to immediately, is so enthusiastic and passionate about running a good pub. They have a wide range of drinks and the menu although limited at present, is set to be extended, and they do Sunday lunch. The chef, an ex-army chef but with lots of civilian experience in restaurants too, is also passionate about providing great, home-made food. We very much liked the look of things, so we booked for Sunday lunch - we went along on Sunday 28th January - the food did not disappoint! We had a choice of beef, pork or chicken, or we could have some of each. The plate came out with the meat, Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes, roast potatoes, along with it came a large dish of vegetable and a gravy boat. As promised, everything was home-made, cooked from scratch and as we expected, totally delicious! Then came dessert, we all had treacle sponge with custard, but there was a choice of jam sponge, apple crumble or cheese-cake, - home made, and it too was delicious!, and all at a reasonable price - well worth it! We will be back - but we are also going to go along mid-week and check out their menu offers - they are going to be getting wine and drinks offers too - what more could you want! 👍😁.
