Arrived at 5pm for our booking & it started off very well with the waiter introducing himself, taking the order, cocktails & starters arriving. After that, as the place got busier it deteriorated. Food was ok especially starters, although my main was warm as opposed to hot on arrival. Had to ask for the bottle of beer that had been ordered, empty main course plates left for over 20 minutes while we tried to attract someone’s attention. ‘Our waiter’ came back once & we asked to order coffee, said he’d be back shortly but didn’t appear, we weren’t even offered dessert menus. We eventually attracted someone’s attention & managed to order coffee which they then got wrong anyway. If someone introduces themselves as your waiter you really expect them to return periodically & make sure you have what you need & everything is ok, this didn’t happen so what is the point if they are too busy to do the job properly? Maybe they had staff sick/were short of staff as once they got really busy they couldn’t cope - I rarely refuse to pay a service charge but I did this time.

Yesterday, we had a pre-theater dinner at Balthazar Restaurant in Covent Garden. We were a group of seven and had made a reservation in advance. We were also assured over the phone that we could order from a two-course preset menu. However, upon arrival, we found a round table reserved for us that was much too small and cramped for our group. We approached a waiter to ask if we could change tables. Even though the restaurant was extremely busy at the time, the waiter and his colleague went out of their way to arrange a larger and better table for us. We were then informed that the two-course menu was only available for up to six people, as per their policy, and that we would have to order à la carte. I asked the same waiter once again if it would be possible to have the preset menu as promised over the phone, and he managed to arrange this for us as well. The service was perfect, and the food was absolutely excellent. It was a truly wonderful experience. Despite the busyness of the evening, the waiter made every effort to accommodate us and fulfill all our requests. His name was Stefan, and we want to expressly praise him and the restaurant. The ambiance was also beautiful, a mix of an old Viennese café and a French bistro. We had a very pleasant and relaxed evening before heading to the opera for our performance.

The staff greeted us kindly. Unfortunately, they couldn’t have our table ready when we arrived on time so we had to wait 10-15 mins. But we were given a nice corner table. We ordered from the fixed price menu: pumpkin soup, chicken and ham terrine, mussels, steak tartare, creme brûlée, and steamed Christmas pudding. Food was excellent on the whole. I think the mussels were a bit too creamy and didn’t need that much cream. But the quality of the mussels was very good. Jasmine tea was of excellent quality! Table wine was so, so and we should have trusted the waiter on this one. We wished we’d ordered better wine. Service was very good overall. Nice atmosphere, good quality food and tea. Cannot wait to go back and try the burger.

I had previously reserved the nutcracker special dinner for the 26th of December. Upon arrival, the waiter told me it is not possible to order it anymore because it is a Christmas day? Even though the dinner was supposed to be a festive one, how it was advertised on their website. Nevertheless, the waiter there barely spoke English, which led to more miscommunication. The service was also not the best. We got handed the desert menu without even asking for one and already waiting for us to order it. Overall, it was not a pleasant experience. The whole place felt tacky and overcrowded. I was expecting a more classy dinner than a ripoff of money for a small chicken breast. Would not go there again.

Look and feel is almost exact to it's NYC sister. Food was great, service was spot on and informed and the decor was festive. I would suggest a bit more music but overall, worth a visit. We had the lobster and avocado cocktail which was excellent and very rich as well as the classic French onion soup which was good (could have used more cheese on top) and for the main we shared the cout de bouef, frites, creamed spinach and Brussel sprouts. The steak and fries were great. The creamed spinach was poor and the sprouts with bacon could have been a star if they were roasted...I'd still suggest a visit.

And it was so hard to get the waiters attention just for us to get the festive menu we booked and wanted. 20 mins later a waiter came and he said it’s only available till 7 but I showed him my confirmation so he has to go and ask the manager. Had a celebratory lunch here after law school final exams. Was very quiet during the lunchtime, perfect for reading. Oysters were delicious. The champagne list was limited, yet the glass I ordered was still decent and complemented the oysters very well. Ordered the Moules Frite as an entree, which is my favourite dish in general, so I am particular about it; the mussels were of excellent quality, not rubbery, very tender, and the broth was light, yet flavourful — perfect to dip the chips. I dined at the Balthazar in my hometown of New York City as well, and each location possessed different strengths in their dishes. I think the London location has better-quality seafood than the New York one.

This was my first visit to Balthazar, and it was a truly memorable experience. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed at the entrance by a greeter, followed by the maître d’, both of whom were absolutely lovely and made us feel instantly at ease. Although we didn’t have a booking, we were fortunate enough to secure a walk-in table. It was a cosy, circular table tucked away, providing a sense of privacy while still allowing us to soak up the lively atmosphere. The restaurant itself is stunning, with an elegant interior and a vibrant buzz that creates an inviting ambience. The staff were exceptional – knowledgeable about the menu, attentive, and genuinely friendly. They struck the perfect balance of being present without being overbearing, and we never felt rushed, even though the restaurant was bustling. The food was another highlight. Despite arriving very quickly, it was cooked to perfection. I chose the sea bream, which was absolutely delicious – beautifully prepared and full of flavour. Overall, it felt like a truly special dining experience. The combination of the welcoming service, the exquisite food, and the beautiful setting made for an unforgettable visit. We were made to feel like valued guests, and I’m already looking forward to returning.

Great cocktails, great seafood (but also lots of veggie and meat options), comfortable seating and the servers are great. It’s not quick dining but it gives you time to enjoy your food and each others company. I had the starter seafood platter and it was huge for only £26! Just wanted a drink in the bar. There were about 4 empty seats at the bar and 2 high top tables with 2 chairs. The host was reluctant to seat us and checked and rechecked his book. He then asked for my phone number and name. I was puzzled as to why he needed that information and wondered if every other patron in the bar needed to provide that. My friend and I had just come from the theatre. It was busy but there were empty seats. We were finally sat in the corner, against the wall at of the end of the bar. We were ignored by the bartender for several minutes and he finally took our order (a glass of wine, a Grand Marnier and an appetizer). He continued to schmooze with other patrons. When we were ready for drinks again there was a new bartender and she was just as curt as the other one. We couldn't help but think that we weren't the demographic that they wanted as patrons. Extremely rude staff, absolutely not worth your time or money!

I can say enough good things about this restaurant, service, decor and food. We were there on a Sunday afternoon, and had the table for 1.5 hours. We had a corner banquette space that was perfect for speaking and not being overheard. We had the salmon for a mains and crème brûlée for dessert. Plus a glass of wine and a non-alcoholic beer. The waiters were very efficient in taking orders. The food arrived very quickly. And I get it because in order to keep the restaurant ticking over, it has to be uber efficient. The salmon was flaky, moist and had a crunchy skin (I really appreciate this). I also had creamed spinach and loved it. The crème brûlée had a crackly shell on the top and the crème was perfect. Balthazar London is a delight for those seeking a Parisian dining experience in the heart of the city. Located in Covent Garden, this restaurant combines a lively atmosphere with classic elegance, inspired by French brasseries. The interior design is welcoming and sophisticated, with antique mirrors, warm lighting and mosaic floors that recall the authenticity of a Parisian brasserie. The menu offers a wide selection of dishes. The quality of the ingredients is excellent, and the flavors authentic. The staff is attentive and friendly, always ready to recommend dishes and wines. Despite the liveliness of the place, the service remains efficient. Prices reflect the quality of the experience. It's not cheap, but the quality of the food and the environment justify the investment, especially for a special occasion. In summary, Balthazar is an excellent choice for those wanting a touch of Paris in London, with authentic cuisine and an atmosphere that transports you to another era. Highly recommended for elegant lunches or romantic dinners!

Had a reservation for a table of 12 at 3.30 on the 11th Dec for a colleagues leaving party. When we arrived we were advised the table was not ready - no apology . We could see the place was busy so we accepted this and went to the bar. Whilst at the bar we were told we were ‘in the way’ so were asked to move - which we politely did. Again no apologies. Despite now being stood right by the host, we had to continually enquire about our table and were told it will be a ‘few minutes’ - no apology. 40 minutes later we were finally sat at our table - no apology. By this point we were running late so all agreed to just have a main and leave. 15 minutes later we were finally acknowledged and placed our order. I opted for fillet of beef at a cost of £33 and sides were extra. When it arrived (with a member of staff shouting at the server that he was getting it all wrong) the fillet of beef was slightly larger than a golf ball. It was tasty, but not worth the price. The restaurant was chaotic, not pleasant, and the staff looked stressed. Overall it was a dreadful experience with no apologies, overpriced food and underwhelming service. I did ponder asking for a reduction in the bill (which cheekily had service charge added!) but as it was a colleagues leaving party, I didn’t want to further ruin the experience so we paid and left….

Being in the run up to Christmas the restaurant was very busy and table were booked for a set time slot, we still had to wait around 20 minutes past our booked time to be seated. Our overall experience was rather spoiled by being told in an unfriendly manner by the restaurant section manager that our time was up, we had already asked for and were waiting for the bill and would have finished in less time had we known our dessert selection was not available so had to make alternative choices all of which takes time and was not of our making. Her attitude left a somewhat sour taste on a good lunch, maybe we should have left in time before the bill!

The food was nice, but we felt rushed. We’d been served our starters and less than 5 minutes after we had our mains brought over. As you only have your table for a set time, it feels as if you can’t really relax and take your time. I think if you were to go on a quieter day, the experience would be a lot more enjoyable.

Baltazar by name, but most certainly not the Baltazar of New York We had steak frites …..the frites were tasteless & not hot. Steak tasted like it had been fried in pig fat , steak was tasteless. We asked for the check & it took ages for us to be able to pay & get out of there ! Such a disappointment! Regrettably a very poor experience, perhaps as it’s owned by the IVY group & not managed by the original Baltazar team it is just running on the the name & fabulous reputation of Baltazar NY.

Really disappointed - our food came out within 5 minutes of ordering not a chance it was cooked to order. We had only just received our drinks and bread which we had to move out the way so our server could give us our plates, didn’t have a chance to eat any of the bread. I think you turned our table of 4 in less than 45mins! Felt very rushed and nowhere near as lovely an experience as we usually have here.

Food was perfectly fine. Although I did wonder if the Steak Tartar was totally raw?? Having ordered our drinks at the same time as our food, we were surprised when the starters arrived before the drinks which we had to chase up. And when they did arrive, we had to chase up a missing drink! After our main course, the bill was brought to us. We were a little confused as we had not been offered a dessert menu. When I asked for one, we were told we couldn’t have dessert as we had run out of time and there was a party waiting who had already been waiting 15 minutes. This just added insult to injury as we turned up punctually for our table at 19:00 and weren’t shown to our table until 19:35 - which is I guess is why we ran out of time and weren’t allowed pudding! Poor show Balthazar - we won’t be choosing to eat here again. I would recommend to any visitors waiting for their table, to ask for a menu to be choosing your food whilst standing around. It’s obviously beyond the wit of the Maitre D’ to offer this time saving activity!

What could have been a disaster was turned around with excellent service from Adam, our waiter. After a problem with our booking for 5 we sat down 50mins late. However, in the interim, we were given a free glass of bubbles. Once seated, the food and service were excellent and turned our experience around. Two free bottles of very good quality wine and free puddings meant everyone left happy. The whole ambience was very good as you would expect given several Xmas groups were at the restaurant. We were on the set menu, which gave a good number of options for our party of 5.

We were seated 30 minutes late for our booking then asked to vacate the table before our 2.25 hours were up, with a refusal to offer desserts!! The predinner drinks arrived after the starters with one missing! Then we were massively overcharged for 2 medium glasses of wine which then had to be corrected on the bill - None of which left the 5 of us overly impressed with the service !

Great service and delicious food. Nicely decorated for Christmas. Tables are slightly overpacked so it's a bit of a squeeze and it does get noisy when it's busy. Great for a pre show dinner.

Quite disappointed as was looking forward to coming here. Was a busy night but food was really sub quality for the price, I had French onion soup followed by lamb rump, soup was insipid, weak flavours, lamb was grisly. Decor/surroundings feel like you’re in a chain restaurant like Cafe Rouge (e.g. random French trinkets and nicotine colour stained walls). Service felt rushed, they bought the bill before we asked for it. When paying almost £200 for 2 people really expect a higher level experience, even in London. Definitely won’t go again.

We had dinner at Balthazar based on the reviews. I arrived and they told me to wait as my table was getting ready and forgot about me. Then the restaurant was so busy that the service was quite slow and long. The decoration and ambiance is quite nice and beautiful. Though we were quite disappointed with the food quality vs the prices. We had the salmon (26 pounds or so) and the chicken supreme (23 or so) and both were quite small portions and pretty average taste wise. For this type of prices, we expected better. We had some carrots on the side and this was bland. We thought of taking a dessert but the service took a long time and decided against in the end. We wouldn't come back as it felt as a very touristy expensive place.

Arrived to see disappointed people being turned away. Glad I booked! Welcomed warmly, with an almost apologetic reminder that the table was due back after 90 mins - which was fine as we had tickets the matinee at the Opera house a few mins away. Nice Sunday brunch available but went for the regular items for something to get through a fabulous 4 hour Opera. French onion soup hit the spot (although it was too good and I slightly burnt my mouth on the delicious melty cheese!!) Roast chicken chasseur was a comfort classic to add to the soup. Only time for a coffee before dashing to the performance. There is a buzz to the place that was surprising for a Sunday (well for me at least as I don't hit the west end at this time on a Sunday normally!) and the staff were warm and professional that was the cherry on top of this great meal out!

Generally it was a disappointing experience. Even though we made the reservation for three, the table we've been offered was far too small and there were plates and utensils for two. When we pointed it out, we've been shown to a table with three plates, which was exactly the same size as the previous one. No thanks to the first waiter, but our insistence that he won't be able to fit main courses, wine glasses, wine bottle all the other stuff on the table, we requested to talk with a superior, Stefan, who was kind enough to assist us to a bigger table, then we started to enjoy our night. The streak frites was a huge disappointment, the meat was really poor even though Stefan made everything in his power to cover it up, but the meat's taste was far from the softness and juiciness we've been expected from a place like Balthazar. Far from the experience we were hoping to get, to be frank, but we're grateful that at least one of the waiters were kind enough to cover all the negatives of the night.

Second time in London and first time in Balthazar. No words, service is excellent, food is incredibly good, very well presented also. Ambient is really nice also, with the lights and the music. Best choice. I came with my wife, we ordered onion soup, roasted chicken and pancackes for dessert. Thank you, coming from Spain.

Fantastic ambiance and incredible food! We started with the onion soup, followed by oysters, moules-frites, and vol-au-vent. The onion soup was hands down the best I’ve ever had, rich and perfectly seasoned. The moules were absolutely sensational, served in a delightful garlic sauce. The service was exceptional, and I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience.

Probably the worst cafe Nero in the whole chain . Staff that don't have any social skills or customer service . No basic understanding of English and are very poor at their jobs . I love a Nero but this one is awful. Take a walk 3 mins up old Compton street and go to one of the best in the chain .
