Basset Hound in Wirral

Excellent little pub, best roast dinner in the area actually I'd go as far as saying the best in the wirral, had fantastic service today, left with a full belly and my dog certainly enjoyed his chicken and the fuss, he always gets a little attention

Amazing lunch on Monday service was still excellent despite them admitting was an unexpected rush food was delicious and hot

Sad to say our experience today was poor. Service very slow and it wasn't overly busy on arrival. It took us over 2 hours to get a starter and main. We had two young children with us too. Starter of king prawn and chorizo lacked much evidence of prawn to be honest. Mentioned to waiter who apologised but basically not really interested in putting anything right. Then despite lots of discussion and highlighting to staff about a coeliac member of the party, when after a long wait and two trips to the bar to ask when our meals would arrive, three gammon and chips came out and when asked which one was gf the waiter took all 3 plates back to the kitchen to "check". We queried how it was possible to check and there was no real answer. Sadly the experience meant our coeliac guest felt anxious and unable to eat anything further and has felt unwell since due to anxiety. This was the first meeting of the fiancé s grandparent so very very unfortunate. The supervisor was very helpful and brought a new meal out but the guest couldn't eat it as the trust had been lost. We didn't pay for the uneaten meal but it has tarnished what should have been a great night for the newly engaged pair. Be wary if you have a dietary intolerance.

This is a wonderful pub that offers a great dining experience 🙌🏻 My doggo loves coming here, he is treated like the VIP he is ! The team have always been really lovely and go above and beyond to make me and my doggo feel welcome! They have always been super accommodating when I’ve booked in last minute for big family events, i don’t go anywhere else. This place is a home from home. Thank you to all of the team at the Basset you are truly awesome, keep doing what you’re doing!

Fantastic Christmas day pub was packed to the rafters atmosphere was amazing and staff exceptional

All staff went above and beyond to ensure our christmas meal was lovely. Service was brilliant especially considering these lovely people are taking time away from their families on christmas and still kept a big smile on their face through all the chaos of christmas

Entered the place with low expectations after being told a few bad things from a similar place but this could not of been more wrong. I was really impressed by the service at the basset hound. The staff members were very knowledgable about the food and provided fantastic suggestions. Truly excellent service! The service here is exceptional. Our server was attentive, yet not intrusive. The whole team worked together to provide a flawless eating experience. We never had to ask anything twice! I can't say enough positive things about the service at this establishment. The staff is very tolerant of small alterations and goes above and beyond to assure visitors' satisfaction. Bravo!

We had a really nice evening here, the beer was flowing the staff all happy and attentive food hot gotta love a roast dinner by the fire on windy day .

This pub is certainly the heart of the community here stopped by for a quick drink and a bite to eat to find the place absolutely packed cars even parked on the street as despite it having a very large free car park, The staff still managed to find me a table and looked after me incredibly well being by the fire was a bonus and seeing this pub at its peak is always something special to witness. You can tell the team here thrive off it being busy Rather then you feeling like an inconvenience they make make you feel welcome and valued.

Came for drinks late on expecting to be turned away but was greeted to smiling faces which is nice to see Catherine served me and chatted to me for a while thanks for the company 😊

Had my mums wake here this afternoon, lovely little cosy area to the side, great food. good value nice staff. Went to another wake here a couple of months ago, it was just as good.

Decided to pop in after Christmas shopping i opted for the Sunday roast dinner and it didn't disappoint it was massive and very delicious catherine on bar recommended the side order of mash which was creamy and smooth an excellent addition to have all the staff are lovely and attentive so we will be back again :)

Only visited a Funeral reception. Buffet was excellent quality and plentiful. Only problem we found was difficulty opening sachets of coffee, so resorted to tea bags for a brew.

Just back from eating here with my wife..never leave any reviews but felt here was worthy of one. Firstly walking upto the entrance had to walk through a group of people smoking and swearing. Inside greeted with children running wild and left to their own devices. At the table couldn’t hear ourselves speak with one woman of the group shouting about where she has had Botox! Food arrived which mine was not correct and sent back to the kitchen. By the time mine came back my wife had eaten half of hers. Could overhear the staff talking about said group aware of there disruption Such a shame. Wouldn’t return here

Came with my mum and son for a spot of lunch and to try something off the new menu we both decided on the katsu chicken and I can honestly say it left no room for dessert it was delicious and very filling excellent service and nice to see it busy

The French onion soup and bread were delicious, very friendly staff and lovely warm and cosy surroundings.

Went down on friday for few drinks in the evening and i must say what a great atmosphere it was very busy but the staff all had smiles on their faces it just made it very welcoming will 100% be back

Excellent service, food was a high standard, delicious and presented well. Staff are attentive and pleasant.

Called for lunch on 21st October. Staff very pleasant and accommodating. We had onion, tomato soup and Hunter's chicken both enjoyable. Will be going again for our Christmas fayre lunch in a couple of weeks looking forward to that. Would highly recommend.

Celebrated an 80th birthday party here last Saturday, 20 or so people. Food was very good but the stand out feature was the service, very attentive, nothing too much trouble, help decorating the room. Just a great attitude... Special thanks to Kay - you made the difference and were why we booked the Bassett Hound - thanks also to Mary and the rest of the staff, top notch!

Been here a few times on three occasions the meal we asked for was not available so have given up going

Dropped in here this afternoon for a quick pint at the end of our walk. Service was quick with no waiting and staff were pleasant and helpful. Plenty of seating available. Reasonable selection of beers, but unfortunately they had only one real ale. Will have to return to try out the food. Seems like a nice quiet pub. Returned to try out the food. Ordered steak and cheese baguette with soup. Service was reasonably fast and it was a very nice lunch. Would recommend it.

Unfortunately I've had to edit this to 1 star based on my last visit. Been coming with my dogs for many years and always found it pleasant, however, on 20th September that all changed. Made my way round to a table that was not reserved when a member of staff ran from behind the bar and ushered us away and out the door saying "sorry we're too busy" even though there were lots of empty tables. Clearly they didn't want us there for some reason. Sadly this had tarnished my view of this pub and it maybe a while before (or if) i come back.

Lovely pub restaurant, we hadn't booked and called in on the off chance. We could see one waitress (Amy) was working very hard & was very busy. She managed to accommodate us & fit us in & she was very friendly, welcoming and professional, we did have a bit of a wait for the food as there seemed to be a delay in the kitchen but Amy kept checking we were OK, the drinks were brought very quickly by polite bar staff. I ordered the steak and ale pie with chips and my sister had the chicken and ham hock pie with mash, the food was piping hot and delicious. Really enjoyed it. We will return again.

Trio of roast,was dissapointing, way too much gravy so you could not see which meat was which, broccoli was over cooked and potatoes tasted of grease and hard.

Nice pub, food was nice & staff friendly but it was a l9ng tine to wait for our food. Tried to use a Pub voucher also which had £20 on to be told it wasn't valid. Just checked when I got home and it was valid. So I'm £20 down now.

So what a fantastic place when pubs say they are dog friendly it’s always just that they allow dogs in ect but this place is dog happy think his name is anton the manager made us feel welcome and the dogs have a menu too plus countless free biscuits and water , the food for humans was delicious we have been a few times but always forget to leave a review so after today’s positive visit with our new puppy I feel it’s best to share our experience we will be going back all the staff not just anton we’re fantastic people

First time we visited this pub. It had a nice atmosphere and we couldn’t fault the staff. However, there should have been some warning about the change in menu and lack of food. They only had a choice of 3 starters and around 5 mains. If we had known this we wouldn’t have gone here for our meal. We also didn’t receive two of the items we ordered.

This is a lovely cosy pub and our absolute favourite place for a Sunday roast (and we've had a lot in various places). We've been here 30+ times and never had anything but perfect until today. The roast was just not up to their usual standard, but it was rectified without a fuss straight away by Anton. Every establishment will have bad days or make mistakes. I think here was just busier than they expected to be today. How its handled, and their usual performance is what's important. Absolutely well done to everyone in the basset today who had clearly worked hard but still had a lovely, positive attitude when serving us

My family and I booked in for a meal last night. This was our first visit and we all agreed we will definitely be back. From the excellent service to the food there is nothing to complain about. Will definitely be back

First time we have been and will go again. Food was good. Deputy manager served us. She was great, we would go again just to be looked after by her. Sorry I did not get her name but needs a pat on the back for excellent service, nice person, good at what she does.

This is a lovely Pub, but went today just for a drink took my son and daughter in law who are visiting from Canada. Was going to eat also but sat outside and could not believe how dirty the garden looked. The garbage bin was overflowing and hadn’t been emptied it looked like for a few days.All the tables were sticky and loaded ashtrays around plus the one going in the front door full to the brim as was that garbage also. Three toilets had no flush and no toilet paper. All in all very disappointed so instead we went to The Fox and Hounds, what a difference. Everything was spotlessly clean and everything else was perfect. Sorry Bassett Hound but you need to clean up your act, I would not recommend it.

Called in on off chance for lunch I had open sandwich was great husband had sausage and mash really enjoyed very good price and attentive staff

Instead of having an evening meal to celebrate our 46th wedding anniversary we decided to have a change and go for a mid afternoon meal instead. Wife decided upon the Basset Hound in Thingwall. We booked a table on line which was simple. Upon arrival we were greeted and showed to our table. We were not rushed to decide what we wanted from the extensive menu. The food was delicious, hot, fresh and well presented. All the staff were friendly attentive and looked as though they enjoyed their roles. Cannot find anything negative to say.

Went for a meal on a Saturday around 7:30 pm the restaurant was very quiet for a Saturday night so easily managed to get a table for 5 of us. The staff are very pleasant and took our order for drinks and a starter which was very good , main course not so good Two of us ordered the steak and ale pie , our food when it arrived was only warm not hot, considering the place was quiet it shouldn't have been difficult to serve up hot food. The pie was basically gravy with virtually no meat but we were all hungry so carried on eating but two of us barely touched our food . I did address the issue with the waitress and the two meals were taken off the bill. We would have been more than happy to pay for everything had our main course been satisfactory. Overall excellent service from waiting on staff food only average though.

I booked my mum’s wake here and I cannot praise the staff enough the food was excellent My brother was praising the sausage rolls The vegetarians were also very happy. The family and friends had come from all over the country and the staff were very sensitive to our needs They just let us chat and chat but they were there if needed

Have eaten here as a family and the truffle soup is to die for . The food is outstanding and I was recently at a wake here and can I say its honestly the best buffet I've ever had , hats off to the chef and staff at this beautiful cosy pub that makes you crave more 🤤

Unlike other place I have left a review for the Basset Hound was excellent. The service was very good, the staff polite and the food was excellent. I had the Asian Curry, it was brilliant and I left well fed.

Enjoyed a delicious meal with my friend for a birthday treat. As someone who doesn't 'do' carrots, my taste buds were changed! A really great meal for me and my friend. I had the Chicken and ham hock pie and my friend had cheese and bacon burger. Lovely service too by all of the staff.

Lovely meal once again. Good size portions as well. The waitresses were polite and attentive. 3 starters, 3 mains, 4 pints, 1 bottle of red wine and a bottle of prosecco all for just over £100. Quite reasonable in my mind.

Very disappointed with the food, I had salmon a bit small but okay. My mother had lasagne, which was very dry, no sauce and the pasta was not cooked enough. When we complained to the waitress, she said it's not our fault, it's brought in from an outside supplier. Shocked with that reply, hence won't be going there again.

Excellent food and excellent service We were a group of 10 ladies not one complaint. A lot of us asked for Eton mess which wasn't on the menu. But they made sure we got one . Nothing was too much trouble. They served us with a smile. When our mains arrived they were piping hot. We will definitely be back and would highly recommend a visit if you're in the area.

Lovely summer evening, watching the traditional Morris Dancing, with the sun slowly going down behind the trees, feeling very English, friendly, and peaceful. Pub well maintained and welcoming, outdoor seating, large car park (but by no means empty!) Electric car charging points available.

I was at this pub for a funeral yesterday. The buffet food was delicious. A really sad occasion but the staff were attentive and it has a lovely atmosphere. Many thanks.

Went to a wake and the food was superb. Nice drinks with a great service.

Visited here last Saturday with family and our doggie.we were greeted with a friendly welcome from the staff and told where we could sit with our pet pooch.theres a doggy beer barrel (water) by the entrance which we all thought was a lovely touch. The food arrived quite promptly which was a burger,2 x hunters chicken and the pork belly with rice which I must say was piping hot and absolutely devine! All my family thoroughly enjoyed their's aswell.£65 for 4 yummy hot meals and drinks altogether and fabulous service! well worth it.we'll definitely be back in the near future and thoroughly looking forward to it!

Wanted to go somewhere nice with my daughter & bestie so my friend suggested here as she often goes, fed up of eating out at places, especially highend restaurants and being disappointed with food/service, I was pleasantly surprised here, food was lovely and fresh, compliments to the chef, staff were friendly and the pub had a welcoming atmosphere. Will definitely be going back. It has put my faith back into 'pub grub'.

Been to the Bassett Hound a few times recently. Always a warm reception, great service and good food. We had the Sunday roast, all fresh, all very tasty. Hope to be back soon.

We visited today for lunch. It was very busy but the service was swift. We ordered the steak and cheese melt ciabatta and a side of fries. It came with a lovely pea shoot and rocket side salad, tomatoes, cucumber and a light dressing. There was lots of cheese and plenty of steak with caramelised onions. It was really delicious and would certainly order that again. The fries were hot and well seasoned. We would definitely recommend this for lunch.

Sunday roast is fabulous here. We go here quite frequently for our Sunday lunch. Lovely place with brilliant team of staff. Service is excellent.

I had my husbands wake there. I was very pleased with the whole set up.

Highly recommend the Bassett Hound excellent for food, service and ambiance. We had a funeral wake on 20th March and we were very impressed by the selection and quality of the buffet food provided. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. We will be back to eat from the pub menu but look no further for a lovely place to gather with loved ones following a Landican service. False advertising if anything. Beef was overdone, stuffing was inedible, potatoes were like frozen aunt Bessie’s and carrots were black. On the plus note gravy was tasty and Yorkshires were nice.

Great quick and friendly service by Kay and Beth, really enjoyed our meals too. Good quality at a good price. Well worth a visit
