Battye's Fish & Chips in Wakefield

Food is very good, not the best in Cas in my opinion but still lovely. Portion sizes good and reasonable price.

Drove past this place on numerous occasions so I thought I would give it a try. It was surprisingly warm for December so I ordered a large fish (£8) to eat outside on one of the benches. The fish was a reasonable size, crispy batter but a lot of grease. In fact it was almost swimming in the bottom of the takeout box. Very unfortunate because the fish was nice, white, and tasty although chewy at the sides and ends. Not sure if I would venture back, I have had a lot better.

The worst fish n ships I have eaten chips dry and hard, fish was stale, bread was stale , peas where a joke curry sauce tasted like fruit juice , never again

OK. Fish and chips hot and fresh. Menu says with tartar sauce but they didn't bring any, had to ask.

First time ordering. Glad i did. Delicious Cod&Chips. Tasty Battered sausage. Lovely Chip Butty. Definitely order again.

First time of getting a takeaway and it will be the last. Not impressed, service SLOW, counter had food on it and the fish and chips was the worst I have ever eaten, will not be recommending it to anyone

Outstanding. The best in Yorkshire. Now there was an issue with the driver doing a runner with the food but Battey’s were onto it very quick and promptly rescheduled another order and driver which was delivered actually on time. They also rang and informed me too which was excellent service. Just eat drivers are getting worse but the second driver was nice and pleasant. 10/10 for the food too.

Had a drive out for tea, we enjoyed it! However the service is very slow waited over 20mins for food. The girl serving was on her own and did her best to please customers but she was inundated with orders both walking-in and online orders (just eat) the girl was quite capable but needs support during busy times. It's unfair on her!! Sort it out Battye's

Oh dear … food not bad at best average but the state of the restaurant and the staffing beggars belief ! Filthy cutlery, filthy tea tray, filthy unmatched chipped cups, filthy saucers, filthy salt pots let’s not talk about the pepper see pictures 😂, filthy carpet, and filthy blinds, apart from that the place is spotless ! The menus were … yes you’ve guessed it FILTHY worn out and from a previous business. One only wonders what the kitchen is like. Oh and a piece of coving that had somehow detached itself from the wall and ceiling propped up in a corner and the young tall man who served us did not know his own menu and everything was to much trouble as it got in the way of his kitchen social life. I’ve eaten in cleaner trenches (if you know you know)

I visit a friend (84yrs old) every few months and we often patronise Battye’s. It’s usually an enjoyable meal of fish & chips. Sadly in our last visit 24th Oct we felt the restaurant to be cold. When we asked re: heating, e were informed that the boiler had broken down. The restaurant should either been closed or customers informed that the heating was off before sitting down. In the least it would be have a gesture to offer a hot drink gratis to warm us up! An old chap was sneezing all through his meal as he was cold. The food was good but didn’t stay warm with the restaurant being cold.

Been a while but I had to chip in with this one! The Tadcaster Trawler, the Selby Schooner, the erm.....can't remember the name of the one in Wakefield, but what I can tell you is this place is astoundingly good value for money in comparison to expensive impersonators. What I simply can't understand is why anyone would go anywhere else for sit down F 'n' C's. Absolutely stuffed for less than £30 a couple! Don't know why I'm telling you this. Probably won't be able to get a table next time! PS. Fruity Curry Sauce um, 's'awesome!

Driver went all over normanton instead of doing hightown first the muppet ,I told him off my food was cold!!

Opens at 11.30 got there at 11.40. No lights on, but door open. 1 couple in front of us. Sat down then realised batter crumbs on the seat, as we were 1st customer the cleaner had obviously missed the seating. Ordered fish and chips which came with tartar sauce, tea, bread and butter. Food arrived no tartar sauce. Asked for this they came back with 1 portion. I asked for another, the reply was you want 2. It is included I said. Fish was lovely and crispy, chips could have been warmer. Altogether a good portion, good meal and great value.

Fish white and flaky with a delicious thin crispy batter. Chips good fish and chip type chips, crispy on outside and soft in the middle.

Always order from here great food. highly recommend.

Just fancied a bag of chips and called into Barry’s as blue ocean was closed, omg I wish I hadn’t of bothered! The portion of chips was small and not very nice, was like eating greasy wax coated chips. Best avoiding tbh

Just had the most amazing fish & chips with fruity curry sauce. Very generous portion, now I am in a food coma!

I was just passing by and nipped in for a pie dinner. Being from Wales I was expecting to pay about twelve quid but it was only £5.50 with a can of pop thrown in. For the money no complaints at all.

We have been coming here every Friday for years. The quality of the food remains ok but Recently, the hygiene standards have slipped. The cutlery and crockery cleanliness is poor and when challenged the staff didn’t seem overly concerned. It’s a shame because everything was fine not that long ago.

Always good quality fish and chips, with bread and butter and a pot of tea. Good service. I was disappointed with the ketchup. it seemed thin, very runny.

2 main items were missing from an order for 5, so they were disappointed and hungry. This is the second order where an item has been missing from this restaurant when ordering.

If you want great fresh traditional fish and chips with bread butter and cups of tea for an absolutely bargain price , this is the place for you. Sat in the restaurant and got great service from carol and her apprentices. Couldn’t fault it. Proper Yorkshire 🤩

do not waste your money freezing cold and dripping with hard fat phoned shop because bread cake missing and asked for scraps and salt and vinegar she told me the just eat driver must of stolen the bread cake scraps salt and vinegar off our food

Ordered two children’s meals got the meals no drinks or breadcakes rang them said it’s not there fault it’s just eats erm you make an package it not just eat disgusting

I don't like to leave a bad review for any business, but I think this might be useful for potential customers. We ordered cod and chips and two fishcakes. The fishcakes were undercooked and potato was hard The fish was almost non-existant. But the real problem was the lousy fish and chips. The chips were dripping in grease and I am pretty sure the grey, tough, chewy fish was not cod. It's a long time since I've been to Battye's and it used to be good. Not any more.

Food was great. The staff were unorganised. Got the order wrong on the phone, clarified what it was when I got there, still got it wrong when bagging up after reading back to me. They then started bickering behind the fryer about who took the order and how busy it was getting.

I bought take away fish and chips yesterday and was very disappointed. The batter was so soggy it was stuck to the chips and I had to scrape it off. Have had them before (both restaurant and take away) and they were 5 star.

Very bad service from this restaurant, the food that came was good but I was missing numerous items from my order so I rang the restaurant to tell them and they told me that they can’t do anything about it because they can’t get in touch with the delivery driver so I lose money basically, never will I order from this restaurant ever again, poor customer service.

Good what was delivered but the bread cake was missing

DOSE THE OWNER EVER VISIT? The restaurant part smells of mould, grease and old fish. I think a deep clean required. Open some windows and close the door between the restaurant and the frying area. The cutlery and teapots need replacing. The condiments were greasy and unappealing. The chips had obviously been sat about a bit but the haddock was excellent! The very young staff were friendly and efficient. They were however dressed in very scruffy casual clothing. Come on owner at least buy them a uniform or get them some new jeans and t-shirts. Would I come again? To the takeaway perhaps. Unless they advertise a relaunch of the restaurant I doubt it.

Just been for lunch today. When we walked into the restaurant it smelt of mucky fat. We waited to be seated and the female staff member waved in the direction of the tables and just said, sit over there. We sat down and looked at the menu. Twenty minutes later we were still waiting to order. We were on the point of leaving when I managed to catch her eye. She apologised and said they were really busy. There were only three other tables taken! A man sat near us said they waited 45 minutes to order and that a couple had walked out without ordering. The food came and was very mediocre. They also forgot our bread and butter and nobody around to ask where it was. Most of the tables hadn't been cleared and the whole place looked grubby. Everything from walking through the door was a complete disappointment. We will never go back

Horrific experience! When I complained about the green and black chips we were served the manager when absolutely hysterical....so much so I felt threatened and decided to continue my complain inside the take away leaving my elderly mother in the restaurant. The manager seriously needs to claim herself down and take deserved criticism, and listen to customers feedback, when i left she shouted "you'd better pay your bill" a customer behind me walked out without ordering and said she is disgraceful...sorry Brian but you have lost loyal long standing customers of myself and my family, we will not return.

Awful, black and green chips, manager became irrate when we complained.....restaurant grimy, no soap in toilet, waitress and managers overalls filthy despite only just opened! Avoid at all costs.

Good if you get there with the right staff on the right day but otherwise lacklustre when staff more interested in their mates popping in than doing basic housekeeping like cleaning the counter.

Order incomplete 4 missing items quality was shocking

Arrived over 1 hour and a half late. Everything as you'd expect to be flat cold. Will not be ordering from here again. Rang up, staff didn't seem to care, just fobbed it off to "Ring just eat" .. You can't ring just eat... there's not a customer support number. Take some accountability and chase your drivers up yourself since YOU can do that!!!!!

Don’t usually do reviews but I am today the Fish cake was disgusting not even cooked I ordered a special fish. It was just a normal fish. I have used this place a lot. I have had normal Fish bigger than todays special

Pretty poor. Fish and chips to takeaway, hardly any chips most of which were black. Returned for new chips and got even less, some of which were still black. Won't be going back.

Food was lovely and fresh very nice however delivery kept getting pushed back despite app showing driver was waiting. Driver told me he was kept waiting for 45 minutes. Slightly disappointing as fish and chips doesn’t take long to make so must be prioritising walk ins over just eat orders. Would eat again but please probably collect in future.

Could be cleaner. Condiments on table were dirty and the tray our drinks were brought on had food debris and multiple stains. Very off putting, which is a shame as the fish and chips are very good, but afraid we won't be going back.

I just can’t bring myself to go here again. We’ve used for years but the service is quite literally intolerable now. Ran always by young staff, presumably so that they can pay minimum wages. I am sure that poor communication skills, rudeness and lack of interest must be in the job description. Every time we go it’s met with a lack of facial expression “what you wanting?”, no please, no thank you and no conversation. Just take the order and shove the card machine in your face. Then comes the order. Not sure I have ever got in the bag what I ordered. Everytime I have to check. Yesterday I ordered, she shoved the card machine in my face and turned with not even a thanks. Then she makes the order, I’m watching, and she leaves two things out. I’m stood there. She looks and says “it’s done”, i have to tell her what she’s missing. She turns round and makes the items, never said sorry, never said a word. Just then throws me the items and carries on. I have never known anything like it at this place. It’s got to the point I literally can’t bring myself to keep putting money in the till. The food is usually lovely. Lash fee times fish has had slimy batter and portions are often inconsistent. I will be using Phil’s up the road in future.

When I received this order my food was completely cold. I had to throw this order in the bin and eat something out the freezer instead. Sincerely hope I do not experience something else like this again.
