Having been to Bettys far far too often over the years to date I have never been disappointed. Yesterday however (Sunday 20th October) I have to say that standards have slipped both in food and service. As a table of six there was at least a 10 minute delay in all our party receiving the food we ordered which just isn’t acceptable. The bacon on the breakfast when it arrived was far too crispy - as thought it had been left to keep warm. The eggs on the avocado on toast conversely were cold. I had to follow up with the waitress and ask for ketchup - rather than it being offered as a matter of course. The toast was cold. We ordered the pastry selection but were told that we had to have croissants rather than pan o chocolate - not the biggest issue but not seemingly an issue for the table next to us that ordered subsequently. Again we had to ask to get some jam rather than it just been offered. Not what it should be. To date Bettys has set the standards for how the civilised world should enjoy cake (and breakfast). There may be people from outside Harrogate who would be content with poorer service or cooking. I am not and will have to explore alternatives.

We queued outside for 15 minutes. Fortunately it wasn’t raining. They really should consider extending the shelter canopy outside to accommodate queuing customers. We were shown to our table and after 40 minutes had to ask for our order to be taken. The food was lovely as always - apart from my friends streaky bacon being overdone- but this was replaced when asked. Coffee and cakes were served efficiently by numerous attentive waiters who reminded us what the service at Betty’s should be like. Overall, not the usual standard of service from Betty’s cafe but an enjoyable lunch with lovely garden views

We were visiting the RHS Harlow Carr gardens and wanted a coffee before we set off to explore. The only option at the gate was Betty's Cafe Tea Rooms. We had to queue outside for a table before a waitress wearing black with long white apron showed us to a table but it wasn't a long wait. The surroundings are beautiful. We scanned the menu. All items are expensive. Staff are polite, dressed in black and white, and it is silver service. Our order came in good time. My husband had scrambled egg with smoked salmon on a muffin. He said it was delicious - albeit expensive. I ordered a tea cake. It came lightly toasted, lightly buttered, the two halves put together to make a sandwich and quartered, It felt like I was in an old fashioned nursery. Personally I like my tea cake in two halves and I can butter my own thank you. However the service was friendly but the sense I came away with was pretentious. I am sure some people like the Betty's Tea Room, Harrogate transported to RHS Harlow Carr. But I would like a tea room similar to those at other RHS gardens. Fortunately RHS have now opened a cafe inside serving more usual fare at more usual prices. I came for the gardens and a coffee, so I found the whole experience more than I wished to pay for.

Frequented after visiting the gardens missing the lunch crowd having seen a queue and coach party. Quickly sat down, with very hospitable and welcoming staff. Good menu as always, presented and looking good. Very pleased with choices which tasted good. Pleasant atmosphere and actually preferred to the other local Betty’s in other towns appearing more space and less cramped.

We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch of the most amazing tasty curried parsnip soup we have ever had. This was followed by Yorkshire Rarebit and Avocado and Poached Eggs on ciabatta, both delicious and followed by berry cheesecake and chocolate millionaires slice. Very generous portions. Great friendly efficient staff too.

Always expect good service and quality at Betty's and that is what we got. Food was cooked well, my fish was succulent and the batter great. Portion size was ok. The prices here do seem to be creeping up. £20 ish for fish and chips! Don't mind paying a it extra for quality and service however the prices may put some people off.

Went for afternoon tea with a friend for her birthday. Been before a couple of years ago. I may be wrong but what you got seemed a lot smaller than before. You think for the price you’d get more. Certainly not worth the £29.99 price tag. Extremely over rated. Four tiny sandwiches, three tiny cakes and a scone. When you look at what other establishments offer with their afternoon tea I think next time it will be a no brainier and go elsewhere.

I have been to Bettys many times over the years and, in the past, always regarded it as a special treat. However, the quality of both food and service at my visit yesterday suggest that standards are slipping. Despite it being a quiet afternoon, with many empty tables, I needed to wave at the waitress to get our order taken after waiting too long, and similarly on leaving, we waited so long for anyone to look in our direction that I had to get up to request the bill. The waitress, when she did attend, was brusque. We ordered tea and scones with cream and jam. The scones were dense and small; the cream was barely enough to cover the cut surfaces of the scone; and the jam was red but bore no trace or taste of fruit. Regarding the tea, there was only one holder for the tea strainers, but two strainers, so we had to place one full of leaves on the tray each time we used it. And only one pot of hot water despite ordering two pots of tea, including a green tea priced at £6.50. Surely that's enough to spend to get a pot of hot water alongside? Overall, it was disappointing and sadly I doubt I'll be visiting Bettys again. Is this the end of an era?

A great place to dine when visiting the RHS Harlow Carr gardens. We ate prior to our wander around the gorgeous gardens, arriving around 11.00am, we didn’t have to queue on this occasion, as previously. Most tables were taken by diners, but we were quickly seated at a vacant table. Our choice this time was for fish and chips, with peas and tartar sauce. The meal was so fresh, arrived promptly, and was delicious!! Staff were very attentive, particularly Natalia, our table’s waitress. She had a great table manner, friendly and served us with a welcoming smile. Thank you to every one of the staff both front of house, and behind the scenes in the kitchen. We will certainly be dining there again.

I’m afraid Betty’s is living on past glories. The staff were pleasant, but the food is overpriced for what you get. One of our party was an elderly disabled lady in a wheelchair, fortunately there wasn’t a queue when we arrived, but if there had been, waiting outside on a cold and rainy day wouldn’t have been an option.

Our first time at Harlow Carr, we have been to other Betty's many times. We were there for my birthday and all had the afternoon tea. The quality of the food was up to the usual high standard, however the quantity was disappointing. When we have had afternoon tea previously we were offered extra sandwiches and refills of tea and coffee. When we asked for more drinks we were told we would have to pay more. When we have paid £30 each for 4 small sandwiches, a scone, 3 cakes and a cuppa it seems a bit much to charge for an extra cuppa. We will probably go back to Bettys in the future, but not for afternoon tea, if I spend that much on a meal I expect to be full!

Excellent (5 out of 5) service in a pleasant setting, however, unfortunately the food (all day breakfast, kedgeree, fish and chips) was underwhelming and didn’t justify the price charged. With so many excellent alternatives out there, Betty’s should take note and not dine out on past glories.

Since Covid Bettys at Harlow Carr make you queue outside for upto an hour at a time regardless if it’s freezing cold, windy, raining and seen babies, children and old people stood waiting. There is no shelter from the elements despite there being plenty of space inside to queue and remain dry. Appalling customer engagement and I would avoid on cold and rainy days. It’s awful to see young children and elderly stuck waiting in this.

First of all, the service is impeccable. Vicky was our waitress, and she was outstanding. The tea and the coffee were nice, and the view from the dining room was lovely. However, the food was a let down: I had a toasted scone, which was tiny, and my wife had a gooey Rascal, which was basically a glorified chocolate chip biscuit with a tiny bit of sauce. Both were relatively expensive. Don't think we'll be back again.

Visited here on Valentine’s Day afternoon and it was raining but you have to queue up outside in the rain at a fire door to the back of the cafe. There is a small canopy but it is not big enough so you get wet while waiting to enter. I understand this queuing system has been in place sine Covid as I have spoken to the cafe before on this issue and was assured that it was only a temporary measure whilst a new entrance was being built. This assurance was over a year ago and there appears to be no new entrance to be seen. You used to queue through the shop and whilst I appreciate this stopped at the height of covid we have moved on. We also noticed that the display cabinets which used to be full with tempting treats are still filled up with empty boxes and caddy tins. The service, coffee and cakes were as good as you would expect from this establishment but the kerb appeal is certainly not what it used to be and instead on sitting on its laurels it needs addressing urgently. It will. E interesting to see what happens once the RHS opens their own cafe in the former Harrogate Arms pub maybe a bit of competition will help.

This was a birthday celebration so to be greeted by a long wait at a back fire door in the cold and drizzle (there is a covered area and staff provide umbrellas) was not a great start. I suspect this system is a hangover from Covid times - not pleasant for customers especially in winter - I suspect it’s easier for staff but this needs a significant rethink. Once we were inside the room temperature was just about adequate IF we hadn’t been out in the cold for so long. The Christmas decorations were absolutely minimal and the look of the tea rooms and the overall atmosphere felt tired and lacklustre. Staff were lovely and the food was ok . . . come on Bettys - you can do better than this!

For me, any cafe or restaurant has to be value for money. So a cup or pot of tea costing over £2 brings out the tight Yorkshireman much to the frustration of my wife (Mrs. Meldrew!!). The invitation therefore, to meet up with family members at Bettys Cafe by Harlow Carr Gardens filled me with horror as I had previously deliberately avoided Bettys Tea Rooms knowing the price of a pot of tea for one was more than £4.50!!!!! "Extortion" I would cry. "I don't believe it"! When the day arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the professional welcome, that booking was not necessary, and the ambiance was special but certainly not pretentious. I kept to my plan of ordering a tap water with my sandwich whilst others in our party ordered teas and coffees which were delivered to our table by smart and efficient waiting staff. Catching up conversation with family members meant we weren't aware of the time until a member of the waiting staff informed us that the food we ordered was taking a little longer than their usual standards and would we like a complimentary drink? I didn't hesitate to ask for a pot of tea please?!!!!!! The food that came shortly afterwards was delicious. Some in our party ordered from the dessert menu and the bill for 5 adults came to £88 (just short of £16 per head). It is an "Experience" going to Bettys Tea Rooms and in addition to the delicious food/ drinks and pleasant surroundings, Bettys' waiting staff have clearly mastered that unique art of making customers feel special. Please accept my apologies for my misconceptions.

Both main dishes had obviously been reheated and only the plates were warm. The Yorkshire Rarebit was greasy and cold in the centre. The pumpkin tortelloni was tough, dry and luke warm. When asked for Parmesan..the waiter didn’t know what I was asking for!!?? For dessert, we both chose the ‘gooey’ rascal which was dry, crumbly and definitely not gooey. Very disappointed with the whole experience. And as for the Ladies washrooms…they stank.

Visited Betty's at Harlow Carr Gardens today. We only had to wait about fifteen minutes , the weather was beautiful for Oct so it was quite a pleasant wait. We were shown to our table. By the time we had decided what to have the young waiter arrived to take our order. The staff were exceptionally good at their job, the food was very nice indeed, very pleasant surroundings in the restaurant and a very enjoyable hour or so had by all. I have to say though, a morning fresh multiseed roll to accompany the beautiful tomato and red pepper soup would have been very pleasing but the roll was obviously not (fresh) but this did not spoil our visit at all.

Betty’s have a monopoly on catering at Harlow Carr, and it shows. The queue - which is long - is not well- managed, and Betty’s only offer their regulator menu, which doesn’t suit everyone - I for one don’t like my latte with chocolate on it. It would be very pricy for a family. To be fair, this is not all the fault of Betty’s - part of the fault lies with the catering policy of RHS, for providing an up-market and monopolistic service, with no alternative.

The menu had lots of food for vegetarians and vegans, a pleasant surprise for a place which does not special is in this type of food. We ordered. Coffee and two side dishes, chips and side salad. These came just after we finished our coffee. Bothe dishes were a good size. The chips were crispy and tasty . The side salad was excellent with 4 different salads in the bowl, carrot and raisin, cauliflower and spring onion, lentil with pepper and a leaf salad with cucumber.

Overall poor experience with the exception of good polite staff. For Betty’s to run out of their signature afternoon tea at 14.10 clearly a failing. We called in for lunch at the start of a weekend away. We wanted to go round the RHS gardens first and then queued for the restaurant. We “jumped” the queue slightly as there were two larger groups in front of us and a table...

Thanks for the great service from Justyna. Lovely food and coffee! The only problem with visiting is choosing from your great menu!

We met today at Betty’s, Harlow Carr. We hadn’t seen each other since before Covid and neither had we been to Betty’s for a long time, so it was a special day. And Betty’s did us proud! Apart from the outside queuing ( in torrential...

We were not allowed to queue inside the back of the shop (as had previously happened on a visit last year) but sent around the building to the back entrance of the cafe/restaurant. The rain poured down as we joined the back of the queue...

What a disappointing experience! Poor customer service, dreadful coffee at £4 a cup. The attitude of the manager at the door was rude and unhelpful whilst we stood in pouring rain. The young mother in front of us had to practically beg her to allow...

Pleasant surroundings with the usual Betty's fare . The coffee is always good and in my experience the breakfast items too . Yes , its popularity is a problem and queuing is very often necessary especially at peak times .

We only queued for around 15 minutes as it was just as the lunchtime rush was starting, but then again queuing seems to be becoming a Betty's tradition. (Previously we'd only ever queued at the York Betty's, never at the Harrogate ones) My husband and...

My wife and I were visiting friends in Harrogate and thought it would be nice to have a breakfast at the tea rooms. Sadly the food when it arrived was Luke warm, the bacon was over cooked and the fried egg yolk was broken. I...

Four of us called in for a breakfast treat and were sorely disappointed. The management just don't seem to care. They're living on past reputation. There's a new arrangement that directs customers around the back of the building requiring them to queue outside in the...

The cafe and tea point in the gardens are lovely, as are the staff. However, the prices are steep (£4.25 for a cup of tea or a cake, £7.50 for a small salad) and there is almost nothing for vegans, or people with dairy intolerance....

We have being visiting this cafe for over 15 years and always enjoyed visisting with family. The team in the yellow uniforms were always friendly and the prices VERY resonable. We enjoyed Xmas luches here and have great memories playing crazy / mini golf. Visited today hoping to enyoy cake and a latte, but noticed new owners have taken over. Sadly not a patch on previous set up and sorry to say the wonerful home made baking was replaced with uninspiring offerings. Latte was the worsed i have had in many years, can only be described it as white coffee, the owner was unimpressed and rude with me asking for a replacement. Will not be returning.

Stayed here on our way home to the West Country we stay almost every year. And this year was just as good as previous years. This year we stayed in house opposite the room I believe was called Braxton? It had a shower over the bath and a nice sized bathroom. The bed was huge and very comfortable, there ware extra pillows/blankets etc in a wardrobe if needed. There was kettle and cafetière with coffee bags. The breakfast the next morning was all cooked to order and great poached eggs. I would highly recommend this hotel and will be staying there again next year. :-)))))

I do not usually write reviews but I feel as though I have to after what I witnessed last night 28/11. After waiting 20-25 minutes for my food, I saw the fryer shouting at the gentleman on the Till area. I asked the young man if he was okay and I could tell he was getting upset. The chef was repeatedly shouting at him and telling him to go home and storming off and swearing at him whilst the gentleman did not respond and seemed to get upset. The worst part was that it was quite busy and the man on the till was obviously trying his hardest whilst the other gentleman working was seemingly walking around aimlessly, not helping, and doing nothing. I am disgusted by this, surely in this day and age abuse towards young staff should not be happening? After reading other reviews, I have seen that this is not the first time this has happened with the same Chef. Surely management has picked up on this? I was going to give the chef a piece of my mind but was concerned that it would only result in him shouting at the young gentleman further. I will not be returning when this man is working And I am advising friend and family to do the same.

Having visited the Tontine several times in the recent past, we looked forward to a nice Sunday lunch as a family. The visit was marred by underwhelming customer service, requests for water took several attempts before being served, the staff seemed uncommitted to delivering much of a service, and the food , frankly was at best average.I’m afraid that in view of the negative impression we had, it will be some time before we return, there are so many good local places to eat, it really is a disappointment to have to be so negative, must try harder would be my advice.
