Bull & Dog in West Lancashire

I never do this before but I think I have to now.!! I been in lot of different pub's to eat, see how the pub's working. But ad the moment this pub is the best around in Burscough. The food are hot and presets as need to. The girls at the bar are helpful and kind. I can only highly recommend this pub.

Bit disappointing start to finish really. Ordered cheesy garlic bread and calamari to start. Bit bland tasteless. Mains came . My partner ordered the chicken platter and as you can see I don’t even think it was enough to feed a small child. Onion rings missing . One simple chicken goujon. Small dried out bbq chicken. I had the steak and added scampi and garlic mushroom £3 each supplement. Scampi was awful. Mushrooms were vile wouldn’t even give them to my dog. We thought still starving so ordered dessert to cheer us up because surely you can’t go wrong? Nope. One dessert came out a dry salted caramel brownie. Partner said it was a bit dry I said did you not get icecream nope they had missed it off. Other dessert still not here 15 mins after as waitress said would be 5 mins as she dropped it which I could understand but it was staking the mick. We cancelled the other desert I couldn’t bare being there any longer. They knocked scampi off the bill for the no ice cream which is fair enough but no wonder place empty for food. First place I’ve got a 3 course meal and left out of pocket and still hungry . Never again

I was parked up for the night in the industrial estate across the road came here for some dinner prices were more than fair and food was delicious will definitely come again if I'm back down this way

I think the pub is under new management now. I went and had their evening deal of two courses for 12.99. It was really lovely. Everything was fresh and tasty, the portions were just right. The woman serving us was a joy also. The atmosphere was relaxing and all the decorations were gorgeous. Love this place!

Came for my friends funeral, such a lovely place to have a few drinks to remember him, staff was lovely, and the food for the wake was amazing! Thank you to the staff for looking after the whole congregation

We had an excellent Remembrance Sunday lunch. Fantastic well cooked food with friendly, welcoming service.

Passed here this afternoon which we live 30 miles away from here for a quick bite to eat. A great pub , very friendly staff,keep up the good work and food couldn't fault too

My family and i came to the Bull & Dog yesterday lunchtime as the eldest offspring was starting university nearby. The food for the 4 of us was tasty and reasonably priced, the service was good and the facilities were clean. We will be back.

Looking for somewhere to sit after ordering drinks and a young waitress, informed us that we were not allowed to sit in the area we where. Not even sat down, just browsing an unfamiliar pub for somewhere to park ourselves. She was very abrupt about it. You are not allowed here unless ordering food. I was looking to order food, but then decided not to after that. We drank our drinks and left, all agreed we would no be back.

We called in Bull & Dog on the way home from taking Nellie to The Dog Meadow. Great old pub I really enjoyed reading all about the history of the pub. Sorry I forgot to take photos of our food 😜 both me and my partner had the triple stack burger which was one of the best burgers we have had would definitely recommend it. And Nellie enjoyed sharing it with us 😂 puddings I had the Biscoff sundae which was lovely and my partner had the apple crumble with custard & ice cream he say it was lovely. We will definitely be back for another visit. The lady that served us was lovely sorry I never got her name.

Went for a friend's party, great buffet & room decorated beautifully. Only downside was that kids had to leave early which was a shame. Kids play park is a bonus.

Nice little pub that's been there as long as I can remember

No soup on the starter which would have been useful information before we sat down to look at the menu. Ordered alternative starters which were really nice. The Sunday roast was barely edible. The meat was cold and full of fat. Very dry and bland the whole meal. Not tried anything else of the menu before but save your money if your wanting a roast dinner. I’m not one to cause a fuss but I felt ripped off paying for the roast which was hardly touched.

Call today 1st Sept thought we'd try Sunday lunch it said under new management it was just 12 o'clock we asked for a menu was told they not serving till 130 won't be calling again.

A nice pub meal with friendly staff . Reasonable priced too with a good portion.

Starters were amazing but they really let themselves down on the main meal. Service was a bit rubbish, I asked for what food tastes like, the waitress said she didn’t know, asked what’s popular, waitress didn’t know. The chef also missed food off our main meal and when trying to get their attention we were ignored 4 times, to the point we had to get up and ask. ☹️ For the price we are paying I’d expect more.🙄

Quiet, thought it was an event. Local to where I was for the day so OK. Bit scruffy in places. Staff were friendly though.

Has a nice big playground for kids, and when sunny, you can also sit at a picnic table and enjoy the open space. The food was good. It was not too expensive. When we went, they had BBQ and pizza serving as well.

Firstly, the young girls serving were lovely - polite, attentive and helpful. Ordered three meat Sunday lunches (pork, chicken and beef) Imagine our surprises when the chicken turns out to be a chicken THIGH each. Slice of beef was tender and delicious. Slice of pork was chewy. Chicken - absolutely dumbfounded why anyone would consider a thigh part of a three meat roast? Vegetables and potatoes were a little insipid but perfectly edible. The yorkie was bought in and the huge (what appeared to be) dried out Aunt Bessie stuffing ball was actually quite off putting and best ignored. A huge jug was of gravy was brought. Overall the food was passable, but not what I’d expect of a Sunday lunch - a three meat roast everywhere else consists of sliced meats and chicken is ALWAYS breast meat. We had literally no sooner finished our last mouthful when the older lady (assumed manager as was telling the young girls what to do) stood over us and asked “finished” “Yes thanks” “Girls clear the table” We tried to continue to chat She hovered…. “Dessert?” She asked “No thanks” - we had recently ordered more drinks and wanted to chat She then proceeded to move tables, including the one alongside us into a long table. No issues we again tried to chat. “Anything else?” She asked Again we declined - she kept hovering and were made to feel like hurry up and go despite both having large drinks left. Rude! We possibly would have had desserts but for this ladies aggressive hovering nature. When we eat we chat, it’s a social event. I don’t expect to put my cutlery down and be expected to drink up and leave. Some lessons in customer care needed by management (not by the two lovely young girls who were excellent)

Was looking forward to trying this place, but upon arrival we were told we could only eat outside due to it being busy. We found a table and ordered some drinks. But when we went to order food they had decided to stop all food orders. Total waste of time going in busy periods so be wary!

Went for a drink with a friend. Service very good by a lovely polite barmaid. Will return in the future.

I have moved over the road from this pub a week ago . We went over to see what the food was like and all I can say is everything was 10/10 . The lovely welcoming staff , lovely chef Tom who introduced himself and food was outstanding. Thank you all for such a warm welcome we will be back very soon . Telling the neighbours all about the pub and service 🤩

My friend and I actually went to another pub not far away first but didn't like the menu so ended up here on spec with a little dog she was looking after. The place is a little gem. The staff were all very lovely and welcoming and genuinely helpful. The food was delicious, I had the gammon and asked for a little salad garnish instead of peas and when it arrived it was obvious care and thought had been taken and was really well presented. My friend (and the dog) had sausage and mash and said it was lovely! Lovely place, lovely staff and lovely food we will return . Thank you.

Booked a table for lunch at 1pm and when we arrived we were told the kitchen wasn't open and food wouldn't be available until 4pm. A phone call to let us know and perhaps any sort of apology would have saved a negative review.

Christening at the weekend for 27 people booked the whole room which was just short of £300 and asked to share with another party on the day, this was refused by other members in the party as we arrived after them due to leaving the church later than everyone else. No issues with drinks but when the food arrived on time at 1:30pm as requested there was 18 sausage rolls, 18 chicken goujons 2 bowls of chips but plenty of mixed sandwiches (White and Brown bread) there was some noise from our party expressing that they was near the back of the que and there was no Hot food left to be told by the staff others must have taken more than one item (we was down by 9 hot items each) and a mention of a bad review advising this. Staff then said if you leave a bad review we will not do anything to help the matter. My wife came over to me and explained what was going on which I went to the owners/managers to advise on this and apologised straight away if their staff felt threatened with any swearing that had taken place. I got one of the menus which states S on the end of each Hot item, therfore paying for more than 1 item per person even though we received 9 of these items each less at the start. They claim the menus are by Punch Taverns (emailed these too) and was also advised that on their daily menu the Gammon and Eggs only comes with 1 egg (the S should be removed if they know this) as we said a bad review will not be added they went to Aldi to get chicken goujons and nuggets, we recived them in 15 mins with another 2 bowls of chips as these are portioned by grams per person (5 chips each). The balance was paid in full prior to receiving the food so I didn't forget but had I to know of the issues we would be facing the remaing balance would have been discussed. As promised a bad review is not given but hope this could be looked into for other parties who book in the future.

Last minute stop for lunch today, nothing was too much trouble the girls working were fabulous definitely recommend great value for money, clean and tidy 👍🏼

Good, tasty pub food. Particularly enjoyed the apple and raspberry crumble. Service by Daisy was excellent! She was very attentive and very pleasant. The meal was very good value too.

If I could give no stars I would Ana one of the rudest people iv met Chicken undercooked on the chicken strips I politely addressed this when I came to pay as a member of staff had to take it away she told me it wasn’t and walked off laughing! Didn’t even offer a resolution it was dealt with disgusting by her and the male manager I spent around 3 days a week here never complained about anything even though the customer service from some staff members, Anna especially is very arrogant just as a lot of others have said! I will never go back!! Dog poo all over the garden that kids play and eat in and was asked by 4 different people to pick up and still nothing was done On the other hand the blonde long haired girl was trying everything to help and is so lovely. What a shame!

My first review but thought this deserved it as there was more than 5 huge dog poo’s in the garden, near the tables, near the children’s swings. Childs chips were full of oil inside and were dripping! Used to love coming here with our little ones, such a shame 🙄

Family friendly, Great play park outside for kids and outside seating. Some weekends have extra activities for kids and top plus is obviously dog friendly. Went to eat with family and food was served hot and tasted amazing . Kids were happy on Playground and outdoor kicking football and our dog even got wee treats off staff. Lovely little local pub. Highly recommend .

Lunch menu includes a drink for £1. Great value the meal is on the small side so if you have a big appetite order a side. My wife had a BLT sandwich with salt and pepper chips and recommends it

Food was good BUT the staff were miserable and waited 45mins for food one person we talk too was waiting an hour for his food with his kids. We were just about to leave then the food finally arrived . Will be giving this pub a miss next time I am around that area .

Really disappointed with the service! We booked a table a few weeks ago for a large group, turned up today to be told they double booked with a function and couldn’t seat us. If I could give 0 stars I would.

Dropped in here for lunch under £20 for 2 people plus a drink each (drinks on offer with the lunch for £1 each) my other half had the scampi and I had the fish finger sandwich and skin on fries. Incredible value for money and tasty food.There is also a lovely seating area outside and children's play area.

Went for dinner tonight food took ages to come over 40 minutes. Then only 4 out of the five came out and then another tables food came out before our remaining meal! Food was ok at best and then we were overcharged for food. The was on girl working hard on her own while other staff where just stood there. Won’t be coming back, very disappointed

Called in today 15th march for lunch, the spicy chicken wings were amazing , I had the gammon and egg, again it was great, service was great, front of house were great and brilliant food from the chef

Has to be the worst nachos I've ever had. , missing chicken breasts so anything involving chicken breasts was off the menu . Chicken wings nice. . Menu was a bit naff really not sure if there was a lunch time menu but lacked nice sandwiches or baguettes . Would I come back. No. Would I recommend....probably just for the chicken wings

Food was delicious and very filling it was a nice atmosphere. Service was a little slow but we have to factor in that we went on a Sunday when they are usually busy with Roast Dinners.

Large family pub, good pub food not to expensive

I came across this pub by accident with my sister, as we were going somewhere else and it was closed, so we were driving along and came upon the Bull and Dog. A lovely man called Americo (I think),who showed us to our table was so kind , helpful, excellent table service, he recommended the vegan burger, as I am vegetarian, well, it was the best burger I have ever eaten. My sister had the steak pie, mash and veg, she said it was delicious. The pub and toilets are spotless, so very clean. We will definitely be back. I would highly recommend a visit to this pub.

Overpriced microwave meals. Morretti is £5.40 a pint and tasted off clearly showing the lines haven’t been cleaned. Not the first time I’ve been here and not the first problem either. Ordered a chicken tikka and it was cold so I sent it back to get another one. Not even a minute later it came back and it was still cold like it had just gone back into the microwave for less then 30 seconds and then back at the table. Staff were rude when I wanted to complain and begged me not to give a bad review. Even tried to give me a discount for next time I come which I won’t be. The manager was also really arrogant. Definitely won’t be going back there again.

Came for some food with my dad for a bit, the woman who served us was an absolute delight having a laugh and joke with my dad. The food was lovely, I had sausage and mash and my dad had a mixed grill, the food came out hot and well cooked. The dessert I had was brownie fudge cake and it was lush!! I would definitely recommend coming here, it's a little pricey, maybe normal pub prices, but definitely worth the money!

Great to have an alternative eatery to Nero, Subway, Greenhalgh and Booths

£13 for what looked like a supermarket or Hollands pie with processed garden peas that could have come out of a tin! Nothing seemed homemade about the meal that's for sure. Food not particularly hot either. Maybe another 30 seconds in the microwave for the pie in future? Could have got same at the chippy for under a fiver. Place was almost empty but still took 15-20 mins for someone to come and take our food order. Won't be going again.

The pub is nice but the food could have been hotter. The main meal was just warm, as if it was done ready to come out and was waiting a while. I would return and try again.

Pies were cooked for so long there was no steak and ale in them! Fish was burnt and greasy and no juice in the lemon they served with it !

Came here for a roast recently with my partner and two kids. Alot of stuff on the menu they didn't have, including mash for our roast so offered us rice as a substitute. It wasn't busy at all and I understand why. The roast itself wasn't anything to shout about and the chicken looked like it had seen better days. Staff also looked as though they didn't want to be there. The place is lovely and has so much potential but service and food needs working on in our opinion.

Another one I’ve driven past many times for work and was eager to visit. Great place indeed and the chap on the bar assisted me with finding Cask Marque pubs in the area. Top notch 👍

Both my husband and I had the steak and ale pie with mash, pies and gravy. £13 each. It came and I was in shock! How can you change £13 for a chippy-style pie, terrible mash and hard peas? It's a shame as we were with the grandkids who loved the play area. Thought we’d found a new place to take them we could all enjoy. But sorry guys, I wouldn't recommend or come back! Such potential too!

Went out for a family meal my mixed grill and my brothers mixed grill were both stone cold really disappointing I cancelled my meal it put me off wont be coming back shame really could be a really good pub

Food was very average, drinks where expensive and menu was very limited. Ordered food and chips and peas where cold. Got another bowl of chips and peas. But the chicken bbq chicken wings where missing. When requested about them, got a single over cooked salt and pepper wing - of which I didn't like. Will not be returning ;0)

Had a wonderful meal here, massive thank you to Daisy who was extremely attentive and made our experience very delightful, she did not stop the entire time we were there keeping on top of everything running both the bar and restaurant, very impressive! We will definitely be coming back.

Food wasn’t great and the time we waited was excessive.. also two different menus for inside and out seemed to confuse the issue… the atmosphere and play area for the kids was great though

Can't express how positive our experience at the Bull & Dog was. We had a large birthday booking for a Saturday lunchtime with various dietary and accessibility needs. The staff went above and beyond to make it a fantastic meal. Food, setting & staff were all 10/10. Thank you.

£200 for a buffet which cost about £50 not at all impressed celebrating my sisters birthday felt like it was thrown together last minute disgusting from such a reputable pub dissapointed is understatement

Poor food quality, sub par service. Ordered only 2 starters and took 30 minutes until I went up to ask where it was, to which I was told the ticket never got logged and we would have to wait a further 15minutes. Food came and it was poor quality. Very bad experience for the price and location

What Can I say... Sabrina and her Team supported us on our wedding day, We held our reception at their Marquee which has its private bar and toilets, as well as a BBQ. All the food at the buffet was perfect, as well as the BBQ. They had another party of 70 in the main pub.. but still managed to cope perfectly well.. They even hired a heater which was very nice.. the staff are very friendly did everything they could to make sure our day was perfect. It certainly exceeded our expectation. Thank you to everyone at the Bull & Dog pub for a fantastic wedding reception. We really cannot thank you enough Mr & Mrs Eckersley xx

Eaten here many times over the last 2 years but not since the new management took over so we thought we’d give it a go 3 weeks ago for Sunday lunch. Never again. Total shambles from start to finish. Rude, disorganised and total chaos. Told at 4 there was no chance of food as they had stopped serving. No explanation given. Dirty glasses and dirty bar. Shocking. Reply to Management Thank you for responding but I’m afraid we will not be returning as in fact it was management, in fact yourself, that was rude to us. I didn’t want to mention this on the initial review but I don’t think it is right that you are trying to blame a member of staff for your bad manners and lack of respect for customers. All that was asked at the time was are we able to have a table and you said kitchen is closed. If you did have a broken gas valve then why was the pub still open as this is a hazard to life. Exaggerating?? I think so. More likely that you simply can’t cope. I also noticed that there is no response to the comment of a dirty bar. Considering you have supposedly ran a pub before then you should understand the need for cleanliness and stringently be enforcing and practicing good hygiene. I will leave it there.

New licencee is absolutely disgusting. She has not spoken to one local since taking over and just sits at a table with her laptop dictating the the staff. I seen her mouth off to a delivery driver when he done nothing wrong and then rang his company and complained about him and when she got off the phone she mumbled "no one messes with me" how that creature is in the hospitality trade is beyond me. She needs to go and very quickly! It says something that most of the staff have left as well becasue of her and her partner. Reply to owner. I have never been barred at all hence why it was out local, the only reason it isn't now is becasue of you. Having read youre replys to other people you always have the same excuse and you seem to have some serious mental issues. And for the recored I would not step foot in that pub again whilst you're there which thankfully due to you breaking licence rules I.e. running another pub at the same time won't be long. Good luck. Popped in for a pint on my way home and Charlie the bar man was full off knowledge and very attentive, he’s a credit to the pub. Busy bar didn’t seem to phase him, would definitely come back for his service. He deserves a rise

Great food, at a reasonable price On arrival was made aware that they had no steaks - which was ok as it was late evening and we didn't want steak anyway I had Stilton and garlic mushrooms on toast starter - it was amazing Lasagne was full of flavour Nice amount of chips Lovely sticky toffee pudding and custard Great staff - nice and friendly and made sure everything was OK for us All courses were well presented and full of flavour Will deffinately be going again

Chips was cold , our meals came out separately, so we ate a separate times , the service was poor .

New licensee last orders tonight at 2130. 18 lads who had played football and wanted a beer refused alcohol after playing in 23 degree heat. Another two cars turned up in car park with 4 and 3 people in turned away . In these times that pubs are closing all over the place how can you turn away so much custom? Ran out of food 1630 Sunday and again turned countless people away for food . Toilets blocked and awaiting a plumber . New licensee you need to book your ideas up and quickly ? Perhaps actually having the decency to speak to your customers might help ?

Went here for the first time last night with my colleagues for a leaving do. Great pub on the outskirts of Burscough with friendly and professional staff, excellent food (I had the scampi for main and the Biscoff sundae for dessert) and a lovely beer garden :) Plus you get a pager that goes off when your meal is ready. Highly recommended! :)

Was waiting for child's cookie dow for 35 minutes to be told it it was rubbish and they would have to do another one also price for 2 slices of pizza was 2:75 last year got a full pizza for less won't be going again I paid the bill and walked out didn't wait for the cookie dow

Had a roast dinner,it was so nice. We will be going there again. Staff are so friendly too. Nice and clean in there and a nice beer garden with a park. Our son was so happy playing there.

Held a wake for us at very short notice and staff and venue were great.

Called in for lunch today. Manager and staff very friendly, helpful, and obliging. Found out he's an Evertonian too, which is a bonus. Food was very good for pub food and plenty of it. On our list to return soon.
