Visited here for food after a lovely walk around Mam Tor. Staff are extremely rude and unwelcoming.. certainly not the yorkshire way! You're just shouted or commanded at.. no warmth or care. The food is appears to be heated/fried from frozen but it is presented well and tastes good. Puddings are fabulous. Would recommend training your staff on the ethos of customer service and "service with a smile".. it goes a long way!

So friendly, clean and dog focused. Food is generous pub grub but well cooked and very edible. The service was excellent even at their busiest. Not a massive room but a comfy bed and even had a fan in the room. Bathroom had some lovely shampoo and lotion. Loved the boot covers in the hall. All said it had a relaxed atmosphere and was a great place to stay. It was not expensive for the quality and we would return at any given opportunity.

Great place. Lots space, good access for wheel chairs and suitable toilets . Sadly has a policy which is not very inclusive for wheel chair users. Can’t book a table . No good if you come and it is full or only high tables . Not like a wheel chair user can just walk off somewhere else! Spoke to staff no flexible to aid equality and manager never responded to my email. Surely they could make an exception for wheel chair users If they did 4 stars

Not very cosy inside now after the refurbishment. It looks like any other chain pub inside and the new food menu (new since the last time I went about a year ago) is also very generic and americanised. It doesn't offer the traditional British pub grub that I liked about this pub. Now it's fried chicken and waffles with grey furniture as opposed to the old menu with a nice pie, roaring fire and the oak timber seating. The lady on the bar today was also very rude. I don't think I'll go back again. Sad to see it lose its way.

Some food in our group was OK but some not. One hunters chicken was really really dry. The vegan duck had very little rice and the chicken and rice was dry and needed something else. It’s not as good as it was before the change of ownership. There did used to be a specials board and that’s gone and almost all meals have chips which leaves little choice for those that don’t want chips . The knives and fork are placed handle down so you have to grab the bit you eat with to pass to a friend The waitress delivered 2 meals but all in the basket was 1 knife and 1 fork. I did shout at her to come back but she ignored me. We had no napkins and couldn’t find them. The food in weatherspoons is better and you should aspire to be better than them

After a long loop in the Peaks we came across the Bull as we walked in from Winatts Pass and it stood out with it's clean look and kerb appeal. Venturing inside we donned the overshoes to protect their lovely oak floors and entered the lovely bar and seating area. We ordered various real ales and stout between us and they were excellent. We all had a main course, Pie&mash, ham, egg n chips and 2x waffle and southern fried chicken. They were served with good time, freshly cooked and piping hot. All very tasty. We all commented on how good it was and how it made a great end to a fabulous day. I'll definitely come again, may even bring my girlfriend!

Great location, lovely refurb shame about the service. Staff to me would sooner be having a chin wag or on their phones. Plus don't call if you fancy a coffee before the drive home. Must be the 5th time now and everytime I've asked, the machine is off. Plus called in the other day at around 6pm to eat and they'd stopped serving food! Maybe stop serving at a set time but I cant see anywhere, where it gives you the food serving times. Not bad to say in the reviews, they keep saying they try to set their standards high. The place was run much better before the refurb. I'm guessing possibly new ownership but not sure. Anyway I won't be going back. Top tip. Try another pub👍🏼

The rooms are lovely, the location is brilliant and everything was exactly what we were after. The only disappointment was the breakfast experience. The fact that the breakfast was not a sit down but a take away, the only hot option was a reheated prepacked sausage or bacon cob. In effect the breakfast is a take out cafe that you get 1 item of food and a drink. Therefore we went elsewhere for breakfast.

The staff were helpful and friendly enough. We had a starter to share of nachos with chicken, which was okay. My partner had the steak and ale pie with veg and I had the chilli con carne. My partner’s food was close to inedible, steak in the pie was chewy, the broccoli was almost impossible to cut through it was so hard. The parsnips were burnt and the chips were cold. My chilli tasted like yesterday’s reheated in a microwave. Within 20 mins of leaving to drive home I was experiencing sore stomach and my partner was starting to feel nauseous. By the time we arrived home an hour later my partner was experiencing sickness and diarrhea and ended up in bed for the rest of the night. My stomach was painful and unsettled for most of the night too. I couldn’t contemplate ever visiting this restaurant again.

Called in initially for a pint after a walk in the local area and then decided to eat here after all. Food was a little disappointing. Seemed like everything apart from the battered fish came directly from the freezer. Wasn’t particularly hot either. The chilli beef on chips was absolutely swimming in sweet chilli sauce, I think a pot on the side for dipping would have been much better. The selection of drinks from the bar was reasonable. Unfortunately the staff serving behind the bar didn’t appear to be very friendly and certainly didn’t want to smile. I would have understood slightly had the pub and beer garden been busy but it wasn’t. I asked for a glass for my bottled drink and plenty of ice but it appears Ice was being rationed. The inside for dining is very pretty in the restaurant area. The beer garden is located alongside the car park but it is good for catching some sunshine.

There is nothing more unwelcoming than a member of staff looking at you and then looking at their watch as soon as you walk in. Then when having your drink have them walk past and eyeball you. Worst of all I’m presuming this was the manager with grey in his hair, chequered shirt and shorts. If you don’t want customers in the pub for the last hour of trade I suggest changing your opening hours to closing at 9pm. Food was pretty good, but we had to return to the bar *three* times to ask for things that were left off dishes. The loaded fries came with no salt and vinegar scraps, the toast and pate came without chutney and the chicken caesar salad had rather dry chicken and not enough dressing to make it palatable. Each time we had to go back to the (crowded) bar and wait to get someone's attention, the food got a little colder. The place itself is lovely. Sitting outside, the views are stunning and on a hot day, it's lovely. With the money they are making, surely they can afford to hire someone to expedite the food and make sure that the (very simple) dishes go out as advertised. To be fair, everything was fixed when we eventually found people to help, but these are simple mistakes on food that's not complicated to put together.

Sis and I were on a road trip from a much flatter part of the country and had been enjoying a wonderful trip over the ups and downs into Castleton. As we were pulling into the ample and well laid out car park at the rear of the venue a spectacular downpour started. We decided to wait it out in the car while enjoying the Bakewell tart we had resently purchased in Bakewell. Rain subsided and we ventured towards the front door, remarking the view of the castle ruins above us - which had appeared out of the rainy splodge we could see through the windscreen while we sat waiting. At the bar we were greeted by a very friendly host. Lots of people appeared to be enjoying themselves at the tables around us. Some with food and drink, most with dogs. It was a nice and cozy atmosphere. We got checked in and the host explained the breakfast menu and showed us up some stairs to our room. The stairs and halls were clean and tidy - recently refurbished as we understand - and they even had shoe-bags to use for any potentially muddy hiking boots. The room was a nice size and had a, erm, fun decor. Very busy flower patterns on the walls and lamps - but it worked and the feel of the room was nice. The host explained how the heating worked and any other things we would need to know and left us to settle in. The bathroom facilities were also in very good and very possibly brand new condition. Water pressure and temperature excellent! We selected our breakfast items as instructed and ventured out to explore a bit. We enjoyed beautiful views over the fells, babbling brooks, idyllic lanes and alleys and wonderful old cottages. Unfortunately it was late in the afternoon and both the castle and the cave were “closed”. It didn’t matter - a good time was certainly had! Upon our return to The Bull’s Head we tidied ourselves up and ventured down for some grub. Sadly, none was available due to circumstances which probably greatly annoyed the staff. Only “improve for next time”-comment we would make would be to communicate this to guests. We were passed by staff at least five times at our table - unable to make eye contact - and no one said anything. So we asked ;-) No matter - because the 1530, an Italian restaurant, was basically next door. After dinner we turned in and both enjoyed sleeping on comfortable mattresses with soft duvets. There were even extra blankets available for warmth and comfort. Zzz. All in all, The Bull’s Head in Castleton saw us off to a great start on our little road trip and we would definitely stay again! Ps: we did get a call after we left, presumably from the host who had greeted us on arrival, to apologise for not being able to serve us dinner. This was very kind and not at all necessary - it’s all good!

This is the third management team I have known to be at The wheatsheaf , I do have to say that it is an improvement on the last manager , it isn’t a ‘ country pub’ anymore , more like a city wine bar , I mean , it is nice , the decor is a bit too dark and music too loud but the landlord seems a nice enough guy?!. They don’t serve food anymore which is a shame ?! Mind you , I don’t think I’d like to be sat eating my dinner with music thudding away

The offer at number 6 has been continually excellent on every visit we have made over 20 years. The menu is interesting, the salads delicious and the specials always have something different to tempt you. Well done.
