Café Lutz in Gateshead

Horrendous service. Staff totally uninterested. No interaction from them when entering, no menus offered. Took ages to get drinks, never returned with sugar for a coffee or even to take food order. Eventually got up and left - it was not busy! Avoid - If I could give no stars I would!

Really nice dog friendly cafe-bar in prime location in the Grange Estate Whickham. Nice atmosphere, good simple menus, realistically priced with great tasting food. Good drinks menu too. Staff attentive but not overly. A great place to meet friends for a coffee. Go on give it a go, you won't be dissapionted. Update 29.06.2024. Had anniversary brunch breakfast fries with scrambled eggs and Sriracha sauce and full English breakfast washed down with prosecco. Very nice indeed

Food and service was great. Not usually one for choosing meat free dishes but had the veggie special breakfast and it was delicious. Lots of Gluten free options and very accomodating kf dietary requirements. Guy who served us was very friendly and offered great service.

Great place for lunch in the sun. Visited today and had a lovely iced coffee with a sandwich sat outside. Service was fantastic. The sun was quite hot and the gentlemen serving us even brought out a bottle of sun lotion on a plate to stop us burning. Excellent touch and much appreciated. Will be returning

Delicious brunch cafe. Very happy with all the food that we had, although I was disappointed to see the rosti was not on the menu as it's my favourite!The atmosphere seemed very relaxed and friendly with indoor and outdoor seating. Things that would be a welcome addition I think the WiFi password written down on each table or on a board in the cafe and a help yourself water station to reduce pressure on staff especially on busy weekends!

The food was nice enough, though both of our ham hock hollandaise were missing the melted Emmentel, but after waiting almost an hour for the food to arrive we decided not to mention it as we were running out of time. The slow service really lets it down. The cafe was maybe half full so waiting an hour for food, especially without a pre warning or apology, isn't really good enough.

A great gem of a place. Went for a business brunch and its such a great atmosphere. Nice crowd and great food with free parking as another bonus. Well worth a visit - maybe book too as it gets busy!

I came here with my friend and the staff made it seem like we were an inconvenience. The place was almost empty and the food took about 30 minutes to arrive. We both ordered a spicy chicken burger and the bun was soggy, almost seemed microwaved and the chicken didn’t really taste fresh. I may give this place another chance as it is in a nice area and seems like a nice small business but my experience wasn’t the best

Another visit this weekend for what must be the best burgers I've had anywhere, a great way to kick off the weekend! It started with a lovely welcome from the waitress who took our drinks order while we settled down before ordering some food. My burger was just quality meat, clearly hand made and delicious. I will definitely be back for more!

Ordered Xmas dinner/ Xmas pudding, (take away) Wasn’t disappointed, absolutely beautiful, even provided with heating and dietary information. Biggest Yorkshire pudding I’ve ever seen. Tastiest Xmas pudding I’ve ever had. Will be giving them a lot more of my business. Thank you.

Beware the Alpine Rosti! I've been before and had a cracking English breakfast and the owner is really friendly... However... We got there at 9.55 and the door was open, not realising it opens at 10am which is maybe why the waitress gave us a frosty welcome when she finally came out the back. We were told nothing was ready yet and we'd have to wait. We weren't in a hurry so we said that was fine and continued chatting. When she finally came over we just wanted Coffees: we asked for non dairy milk and no, they'd not had any delivery from their 'suppliers'. Again we told her not to worry and I went next door to the shop and got some. 'I could have done that' muttered the waitress.. after I came back with the oat milk, she hadn't offered though. Considering we were the only people in the cafe we thought we'd be appreciated a bit more? I ordered the Alpine Rosti, from the description I was fully aware that it would be an indulgent breakfast, but I didn't imagine it being served in the pan it was fried in swimming in 5mm of oil. 'loaded with bacon' was not how I'd describe it, I think I found half a rasher swimming in a load of onions and a couple of fried eggs. I was pretty hungry so I gave it a good go, but didn't feel great for the rest of the morning. The coffee wasn't great either. A nice lady next to us who came in as we were finishing remarked 'its been very quiet recently' I wonder why?

We chose here over another local cafe because we could see on the map there is parking outside. Both had been recommended and both had good reviews. Initial impression, it looked OK from outside but a bit tired inside. There's an extensive menu and we found it hard to choose. Our coffees came in glass tumblers and we thought there wasn't much coffee below the thick layer of froth, and it wasn't piping hot. The food wasn't very hot either, which I mentioned to a member of staff, and she said it's probably because the bagel comes prepared (?) but she would mention it. It wasn't a bagel either, it was like a large bread bun. The rocket was a bit pale and limp as if it was past its best. My friend had 2 poached eggs and one was hard, the other soft. The food took a long time to arrive even though there was hardly anyone else there, and didn't live up to expectations.

Been here twice. This time was for breakfast good quality, not cheap but good Ingrediants and tasty, first time was for Sunday lunch, I would highly recommend.

I've been here easily 20 times in the last four months, if not more, and every meal without fail has been delicious, whether it be breakfast, dinner or Sunday lunch. Their Sunday dinner is the best I've had in a long while and is consistently great. Extra bonus points for being dog friendly! The service is fine, the staff are friendly and polite without being in your face / over the top.

I have no idea what other people leaving reviews are eating but you want to get yourselves into Newcastle centre for breakfast because this is awful. All the staff were hungover and that was the only good bit cos we had a laugh with them. The food is horrendous, me and my friends went here a few months ago and it was awful and they said they won’t come back. I gave it a second chance, I got the chorizo benedict, it’s literally an undercooked, soggy mess put on what looks like a brioche bun from Aldi and then the person I was with got a pancake and was presented with a dry Yorkshire pudding. We just laughed at the sheer state of it and won’t be back. This place used to be decent years ago but nah, I’ll stick to town.

Lovely lunch here with friends, Cafe Lutz has an unusual menu from the run of the mill venues, will definitely revisit.

Food is always 10/10. More recently been getting my morning coffee to take away, best coffee around and super quick friendly service.

Had a wonderful alpine macaroni with flavours I would not have thought to put together. Only drawback is that when I walked into the cafe on a warm rainy day, it was almost full and it took ten minutes before the steam cleared from my specs and I could read the (excellent) menu. Generally, the best eating place for miles.

Fantastic meal!!! Stumbled across this place and by god I glad I did…. Food was fresh and tasty, only negatives is there’s no kids menu and it was roasting hot inside, so hot we couldn’t sit inside which was a shame. I’ll be back for sure!!

Good and drinks were good. Everyone enjoyed their food. We sat outside in the sun which was lovely. The staff did forget about us a bit as my friend was left without a high hair for her baby but when asked again a young blonde girl brought it straight away.

The food here is really good, have been for brunch a few times and the portions are huge and the food is really tasty. Sadly the service can be a bit hit and miss. We had booked a table and when we walked in the waitress just looked at us without greeting us. After standing for a while without being acknowledged (there was only 3 other tables occupied so they weren't busy and not knowing what to do I asked her if I should just take a seat and she said yeah wherever (not exactly the warmest of welcomes!). The drinks came but it took a good 40 minutes for the food to arrive, by which time we'd finished the drinks but no-one came to the table to ask if we wanted more. The food really is great and you'd find it hard to find somewhere else in the area with the variety they do for breakfast, just felt the service could be improved.

Ordered a bacon sandwich and coffee. At over £5 I expected a really nice filled roll. Only 1 rasher of bacon!!! Not going back.

Absolutely outstanding! We’ve been a few times and loved the food. My family were visiting from Germany and we shared the fondue - it was amazing. Bacon wrapped potatoes are so good dipped in melted cheese! Service was excellent, attentive and very friendly. They’re really good with gluten free requirements too. We’ll definitely return.

Called in for a beer Friday night, almost all the tables were taken, great to see the place busy. Had a beer and shared some lovely food. Great service, nice and friendly with good food. What more could you ask for.

We used to love this little gem of a place but our most recent experiences have been disappointing to say the least. We came for Sunday lunch a couple of weeks ago and unfortunately were sat on the table of two next to the bar and the bar/dessert cabinet was covered in ants! We probably should have mentioned something when we were there but aren't the type of people to cause a scene. And today we have ordered delivery via the app and were called an hour after ordering to ask us to come and collect instead because they aren't doing delivery. This has just been a massive inconvenience and also we have paid for the delivery which has not been refunded. They did give us a brownie for the inconvenience but not entirely pleased with this as last time we saw the brownies they were covered in ants!! Half the food is also stone cold. Really disappointed as this was our favourite place to come for Sunday lunch but we have totally been put off!

I recently rganised a surprise private party with Lutz. From first contact the team were very responsive and helpful and allowed us to decorate the venue including some extra lighting set up by The Undefined Group. The party ran smoothly by the lovely staff and served delicious food. They also made two speciality cocktails for the party based off preferences of the birthday girl. Everyone loved it and it was the perfect venue for a small but special event!

Don’t order from JustEat my food did not get delivered! And they would not answer there phone probably because it’s was close to there closing time.

Didn’t get my delivery and nobody called me back or answered my calls. No refund. No explanation. Just ignoring. Very disappointing.

We came for a family breakfast treat on New Year’s Eve. Took well over an hour to get our food. The sausages in our sandwiches were cold, the base of the bun cold and damp as if it had just been defrosted. The 2 young waitresses were lovely but we won’t be going there again, for the price it was very poor quality and lacklustre. A shame as we like to support local businesses.

We visit quite regularly, and the service is always excellent. We popped in tonight and enjoyed an amazing steak followed by good cocktails. Our server was fabulous. I think other negative reviews are confused or overly demanding? I would recommend a visit for a lovely, intimate setting with great food and drink.

Always great to find a dog friendly place that serves good food. Friendly service with a relaxed atmosphere. Looking forward to going back.

The food was mediocre to say the least. The customer service was non existent. The owner has a bit of an attitude not really what you want when you are spending quite a bit of money for a family treat. I will unfortunately not be returning

Beautiful food made and cooked with skill. Flavours are balanced well in the dishes of generous proportions. Drinks were perfect! The price was a shock given the quality. Will be returning to this gem. We had the Baked Camembert, Cheese and jam burger and vegetarian special.

The location of the Cafe is ideal and fairly close to where we live. We go there for coffee fairly often with a couple of other friends. There is never any acknowledgement or welcome when we enter the cafe, service is usually slow and not terribly friendly - but as we normally only have coffee we still go, but not anymore. The last time we went this week, the prices have suddenly shot up - with no note or warning. Each coffee was 30p and 40p more!! We are all suffering from increased prices, but such a big jump in one go is not justified. We shall not be going anymore from now on. Also, when you only have coffee - they keep asking if you want any food and make you feel uncomfortable, as if you have overstayed your welcome.

Food took well over the stated time to arrive, the chips were stone cold and way over salted and the portion size was tiny. The burger was ok. Won’t go back due to the above narrative.

Visited with family (25 of us) and the restaurant was so accommodating and friendly. We had food and drinks and spent at least 6-7 hours. The poor bar staff were constantly serving us and I think in the end we drank the bar dry! Very attentive staff, great food and good selection of drinks.

Had Sunday lunch today and it was amazing. Sam and Victoria were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them. This place is a local treasure and the food is a delight! Will be returning soon. Well done to all.

Main menu are really open sandwiches....which it doesn't make clear. Sourdough doesn't cut very easily....steak knives...dont help..... Staff a little random. Beef not medium....well broiled more like.

Tried this today a group of three. Lovely fresh food - the only gripe would be the coffee was only like warm and I asked for it to be served with the food/ unfortunately the food arrived 40 minutes after the coffee.

Für uns ist es Tradition, dass wir bei unserem Besuch in SPO einen Abstecher zum Café Lutz machen - der Kuchen, die Höflichkeit der Mitarbeiter und die Atmosphäre sind einmalig! Wir haben am vergangenen Samstag den Geburtstag meiner Frau in großer Runde (u.a. mit zahlreichen ehemaligen NSI Absolventen) gefeiert und unsere Erwartungen wurden nicht enttäuscht! Enttäuscht sind wir allerdings, dass der Pachtvertrag vom Café Lutz nicht verlängert wird und das Café Anfang 2023 schließen wird. Es ist bedauernswert, dass aus Gründen der wirtschaftlichen Optimierung des Campushus eine Institution in SPO geopfert wird und dem Inhaber mit 62 Jahren die Existenz genommen wird. Man kann nur hoffen, dass die Entscheider im Campushus zur Besinnung kommen und die Entscheidung rückgängig machen! Das Campushus und SPO ohne Café Lutz ist für uns unvorstellbar!

I always wanted to go to Lutz cafe, disappointed by the coffee and desserts I tried. As most no reviews about coffee and desserts that’s maybe because coffee wasn’t good! Not coming back indeed.

Hidden little gem of Whickam, full of quirk and classy service. I love coming here for breakfast, as it's calm and relaxing, but the place kicks up a notch at night on the weekend, with great cocktails and beers.

Lovely little jem in Whickham!! Can I just say by I have been everywhere for avacodo poached eggs on toast and this has been my favourite! Full of flavour and even the pomegranate works! Beautiful coffee is served there also , you can always tell premium coffee. Only reason I'm not giving 5 start is because it could do with some better outdoor seating and some beer like corona or bottles etc.

We recently visited Cafe Lutz specifically to try out the Fondue and we were blown away, it was fantastic along with a lovely bottle of wine to wash it down, lovely friendly efficient staff, a little hidden Gem right on our doorstep, we would highly recommend, 5star all the way!

My Daughter took me for lite lunch last week, I had my favourite French onion soup to start best I've had outside France served at the right temperature so could eat straight away instead of waiting 15 minutes to cool down, followed by Croqe madam Absolutely delicious service very good and friendly place including toilets immaculately clean, will definitely be back.

Popped in for lunch after noticing how popular this place was. Food was absolutely delicious and service was excellent too. Tables nicely spaced out and able to order from your phone.

Fabulous experience today. Quality service, staff and chef ensured I had the perfect vegan meal, nothing was too much trouble. Very helpful and friendly staff, highly recommend.

Really quite disappointed. We ate here on Tuesday and the restaurant was packed. We had booked a table and on arrival were quickly seated. Drinks orders were taken and arrived (alcohol and soft drinks ordered separately for the dine out to help out scheme) and then food orders were taken. They had ran out of the two most popular children’s meals so it was grilled chicken breast and chips for them. We had the steak and chicken platter and the rest of the table opted for burgers. Something went wrong with the food ordering as the table that were sat immediately before us were served their meal quite quickly, but then a further three tables were supplied with food before ours arrived? The children’s meals sat on the pass while the rest of the order was made up. This made for very dry plain grilled chicken. Which unsurprisingly was only picked at. The Mrs steak was overcooked and the sauces on the platter weren’t up to much. The béarnaise wasn’t rich and the peppercorn wasn’t peppery. The burgers were fine but on serving (on a small wooden platter) the server tipped the plate ever so slightly and some grease fell onto my brother in laws white shirt putting a mark on it. Go for drinks and burgers to avoid disappointment.
