Caffè Grande Abaco in Oldham

Been here lots of times and enjoyed it. Very disappointed today. The place was freezing cold, had to leave coat on. Chose the vegetable antipasti plate which I assumed was vegan but possibly wasn’t as nothing on the menu was marked vegan or vegetarian. Ordered oat milk with my cup of tea but it didn’t come so had to ask again for it. Tea wasn’t very hot. Bruschetta was missing from the antipasti but was brought around ten minutes later. Antipasti very disappointing. A pile of vegetables not very well presented that were soaked in oil. Had to leave most of them as started to feel sick due to the amount of oil. Sadly we won’t be visiting again, which is a real shame as it was one of our favourite places 🥲.

Always been a lovely place to go for food and drinks right in the centre on Uppermill!! BUT the service we received from Maria on our most recent meal at Abaco was AMAZING!! She is a credit to the cafe and went above and beyond for us! A genuinely lovely lady!!♥️

Disappointing experience. Unfortunately you can tell that the staff don’t want to be there and want to go home as soon as possible. Service was slow despite it being quiet and staff were very miserable/unenthusiastic. Felt very rushed to leave so they could close early despite just ordering our drinks. Food was poorly presented and lacked seasoning.

Great coffee with delicious cakes, we tried pizza too and was really good, the coffee shop/restaurant have great climate and really kind staff, but we been there twice and always was busy so will be good to book table earlier

Ordered 5 drinks and they took over an hour to arrive. Appreciate it was busy, but no apology was given at all and hot chocolate was cold on arrival.

Would not allow an adult to have a child's portion/meal because of tax reasons????? The child's meal was asked for as a dietary requirement for an adult. Very poor service spoilt our day so won't be going again.

I've been here twice. First time it was good, and the staff *are* generally helpful. The next time, I thought the food/pizza was very average. More like ingredients on top of bread, and the margarita pizza was mainly just thick tomato puree with only patches of cheese. Also - I ordered a hot chocolate (already pricey at £4.05) and they asked if I wanted a flake, cream, and marshmallows. I said yes, because they didn't mention any extra cost (this is also not specifically mentioned, by price, in the menu - which is illegal in this country). They charged me 45p x 3 (for each extra ingredient), without warning me. That was annoying and it's not legal. On the plus side, they were very patient and polite when my (non-UK) debit cards failed on their machine. I had to wait to make payment 20 mins later. Overall I like the ambience and the service. But they need to itemise all prices in the menu and not only state 'a little extra' in the small print. (40% extra is not 'a little'). And make better pizza. Thank you! 🙏🏼✨

Excellent place for breakfast, really good coffee

We are in the area with business and had breakfast here yesterday, scrambled eggs and bacon were perfect, the staff were lovely and the coffee excellent. Set us up for the day. Definitely going back !

I come here regularly and everytime is a lovely experience, good customer service, lovely food, lovely atmosphere and very accommodating with mobility issues, I always really enjoy my visits here, Thank you x

Great cafe in Uppermiill . Set over three floors and outside seating. Freshly made pastries, sandwiches, and pizza. Loads of other Italian cuisine to try as well. Fantastic coffee and great friendly service. Across the road is the bakery where you can find lots of pastries, bread, and other yummy products.

This is a beautiful place to eat. The team were really friendly. I've marked service down slightly only as a few of thr vegetarian options were not available as they didn't have all the ingredients so my options were very limited. My friend who I visited with goes regularly with her husband and they love it. I would visit again though.

It's such a shame that despite there being plenty of staff on duty the service was so poor - slow and shoddy. The mainly young staff didn't share a smile with anyone and enjoyed standing around the bar area messing around with each other. The food and ambience are being detracted from by the poor service and sullen staff.

First time visit. Great service and good food. We had a table on the very top floor to ourselves, so not much atmosphere, but enjoyed lunch with friends.

We had a gorgeous brunch on Saturday 12th October. We were welcomed and advised there was a table on the top floor, overlooking the high street. We ordered pancakes with maple syrup and a croque Monsieur with 2 cappuccinos. The food was fresh, delicious and plentiful. Staff were very friendly and polite and the restaurant was clean and warm. We enjoyed our food and the coffee was outstanding. We will definitely be back to sample one of the European themed evenings.

Beautiful little place. All the staff were so friendly. My partner had a bacon bagel and I had mushrooms and thyme on toasted sourdough. Perfect breakfast. And the Abaco coffee is worth the bus trip from Manchester alone. Thank you so much.

Previously gave this place 5 stars, then a short while later 2 stars as the staff were miserable and honestly rude in some cases on around 4 occasions. We didn't go back for a while but recently returned to find things have improved drastically with seemingly a complete overhaul of staff. We've been another 3 times since and the staff have been excellent and accomodating. Abaco is back to its best.

Lovely and welcoming staff, fantastic meal: portions, price, and quality. There is indoor and outdoor seating available. We sat outdoors as the weather was beautiful! Will definitely be coming back again soon!

Stopped here for a drink and tried the sharing platter. It was very busy Friday lunchtime, but we managed to get a table on the 2nd floor. Service was quick and very pleasant. Drinks were expensive. The sharing platter was really good. We had the mixed meat and cheese one. There was plenty on the sharing board with lots of different cheeses, crackers, chutneys, fruit, and a selection of meats. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted fresh. It was a but pricey but we really enjoyed it and would definitely go back if in the area.

Prices a bit expensive blueberry muffin 3:95.

We had a lovely Sunday brunch, The food was good value for money and service was spot on.

Have visited many times and was my favourite place. Went with 2 friends yesterday, Saturday 2pm and was disappointed that after 15 minutes we hadn't been given any menus and had to get our own. Their choice of lunch wasn't available and neither was my drink so we chose alternatives, not great for a peak day and time . Waited a considerable time to pay our bill and only when we stood to leave did they appear with the card machine. Really disappointed Abaco 😔

Can’t rate the food as we’ve been sat for 20 mins deciding what we wanted to eat after they’d taken our drink order then the manager told the waitress to stop taking orders mid her taking our order why you can’t tell people when they are walking in or as soon as they’ve sat down and now we are sat with drinks we don’t even want because we’ve come for food! Not very good service first time visiting won’t come back as you didn’t even offer something to go with our drinks as an apology! Poor waitress having to tell people it’s going to be a wait when we’ve already waited! the manager should come out and tell customers don’t leave it to them! Also very cold upstairs

Second visit, some years apart. Whilst on holiday from Australia we called in for lunch. A great sandwich and a croque monsieur. Recommended

Now I have been coming here years . Never a complaint on the food BUT the serving staff just not very good I am afraid . As per pics ordered the Abaco large board with wine £45 it ain’t cheap we had a few other drinks also . After first drink tried to order the staff are expert at looking down to avoid eye contact small young female short dumpy asked twice can we order . Asked same one for cutlery for the food smiled nodded but ignored what we said . Eventually tall blonde lady took our order very friendly , food came no cutlery asked young lad can we have some he came back with 1 knife ! Asked could we have a knife each at least !! Problem is they are always full , prime spot and food good but boy are the service staff slow and seem obsessed with spraying tables ! Anywhoo I will continue to go but come on it ain’t tricky . Few tables few drinks and food work hard get tips . UPDATE 3/11/2023 Place was empty Friday afternoon not a good sign! Several young Eastern European females inside chatting waited ten minutes sat at a table so I went inside to order asked could I order two medium cappuccinos female looked puzzled asked another for a tablet took my order and payment then she walked away I asked now what ? She replied wait here or stand here up to you ! I became annoyed look I just want two medium cappuccinos why is that so hard ? Eventually she said ok I’ll bring it to you …. 5 mins later another Eastern European female came outside asked was it take away ! I became angry look all I want is what I paid for two medium cappuccinos is that too difficult to understand she then said lady who took orders was new !! Eventually the arrived ! Heard staff was bad and witnessed this before and told owner not a nice chap to work for hence poor staff morale. We won’t be back place used to be ok “Owners reply response” Unfortunately Dan you don’t get a say in how I post my reviews . It was a honest observation your young female staff are Eastern European this is not a derogatory term simply a fact . By your turt response it’s obvious it’s true what they say about you, you didn’t seek to address or apologise for the poor service to a paying customer . Don’t worry I won’t be back . You had your chance and an empty place Friday afternoon speaks for itself . You will always get people who don’t care about service and simply want to sit outside posing . I’m not one of them like I said plenty better places nearby . Wish you the best for the future as you are going to need it ! UPDATE 6/7/24 Wow things have actually turned around gone from a negative one star to a 4-5 star review. Saturday afternoon place buzzing quick service from young staff ordered a beer and a la … previously latter devoid of brandy but this time plenty and tasty. Beer spot on but bit pricey. Ordered a cheese meat board plentiful fresh and very enjoyable . I think owner is listening and things have changed bravo 👏

Ok, this is a personal one. For mostly 10 years, I have been coming here. I have seen this place evolve and I’m just proud of it! It just ages like fine wine. The reason why I come here is because of the fact that every time I go, I will be greeted with the same perfect service (staff-10/10) and greeted with the same perfect food and drinks! The atmosphere is calm and inviting. I recommend the Torta Della Nonna because the lemon flavour isn’t too sour, it’s sweet and creamy. It contrasts perfectly with the nice shortcrust pastry, making it a huge recommendation. I also recommend the drinks, especially the chai latte which is nice and warming; ask for cinnamon to be put on top, it’s a life changer! Overall, just try this place and hopefully, you appreciate the magic that is Caffe Grande Abaco!

I went for lunch and the food and service was very good

An unexpected find with a brilliant menu and food quality but, and this may just be me, the atmosphere drops as you go upwards and we could only get a table on the top floor. It was justifiably busy but we intend to try again and hope for a table on a lower floor.

What an amazing service we received today from Emma and the team at the Caffe Grande Abaco ! The sweet potatoe and garlic soup was delicious and the salmon and cream cheese bagel was out of this world ! We loved our little visit and will share the Sicilian cannolis with my yoga friends tomorrow :) Highly recommended ! We will back again soon.xxx

Been coming here for years but that was the smallest pate portion I have ever seen, no bigger than a matchbox with half a loaf of bread, come on!

It's been a while since I have visited here, although it was relatively busyish the atmosphere wasn't as 'happy' as I've experienced in the past. Menu wasn't too extensive & the prices ... well I was astonished, to say the least

I booked a table in advance but was given a poor one while better tables were reserved for others. I felt this may have been due to my ethnicity. The service was very poor. I expected fair and respectful treatment as a customer. Very disappointed.

Disrespectful and the service is over rated. I have booking at 12:45 pm and the waiter only allow to sit at a high table while there are 5+ empty tables available. I can’t sit well on the high table as it will makes my back pains worse. The waiter is being impolite and said that the other tables are for other people only while I also have booking in advance. I can’t see any point why the tables can only serve for the people when I also have a booking. I feel disrespect and very disappointed.

One of the nicest little bistros/Italians I've been to. Not as small as you think, over 4 floors so plenty of seating but booking is essential if you don't want to be disappointed. Would definitely recommend 👌

Booked a table for 06:30 for 2 people, on arrival a member of staff came over and took my name then told us the table number and pointed that it's upstairs. So we found our table on the top floor which was a 4 seated table with someone else's name on the reservation ticket. The table was wet and hasn't been cleaned. Then a different person came over as we sat down asking for our order, we asked for some table water and a couple glasses of wine and said we would have the mixture of cheese and meats platter/board. Our drinks came but were given to a different table then our food came, we weren't given any cutlery or side plates. There were no staff around to ask. Eventually a different server came up and I managed to ask but I think they forgot. The board was ok but could have been better, there was too much meat and no enough cheese! I would suggest some olives on the board aswel. Overall a bit of a let down unfortunately. All of the staff wear headsets which I think is very distracting for them.

We ordered five drinks and five cakes. 15 minutes later we were told that 3 of the cakes were not available. We re ordered and waited a further 10 minutes for our order to come. One mocca had both marshmallows and cream, we asked for no marshmallow. They were both not hot. My daughter said she had not received her cake, to be told they didn't have any. She asked for a refund of her pre paid cake. At this point we had been served by 3 staff members. A waiter came to do the refund. I asked if he was the manager, he said yes. I explained we didn't have a good experience with our service, he said they had been busy and run out of stock. I explained as a manager he should instruct staff of low or no stock levels. His answer to me was ' What are you after'. HOW RUDE. Going out for a treat is a luxury for some people, this was neither.

Fantastic place really good food, really busy on the Sunday we went ,probably to busy for the number of staff. But wouldn't stop me from going again.

Attended a wine and food pairing evening. I have been before and enjoyed it. This time was different, vegetarian food wasn't too good and served cold. Very disappointing, will not be going again.

Very disappointed.I have been before and was looking forward to my next visit We were seated on the top floor. No atmosphere it was very quiet could hardly hear the music .No pizzas. Won't be rushing to go back.

A lovely establishment, 5* in truth but after speaking with a couple of staff members and requesting semi-skimmed milk for the coffee, they just say that they don’t use that and it’s whole, skimmed or non-dairy due to their being ‘no demand’ for semi-skimmed milk. How odd!! I’d wager a bet that semi-skimmed is the most in demand, but if you don’t give customers the choice then you won’t have a demand for it! I’d much rather support a local business that a national brand with a machine in a national convenience store, but no choice as doctors orders say no whole milk and let’s face it, with skimmed there is no point…. Would be 5* other than this as staff are generally friendly and helpful (chap with the long hair springs to mind) and the pastries etc. are lovely.

Travelled down for the weekend, thought we would try a local restaurant. the host was lovely proper apologetic on how busy it was so we had high expectations however they were not met. Don’t get my wrong cocktails were really nice. We ended up waiting an hour to get our order taken, to even then they only took our order when a server was coming round asking last orders for food which we were not happy about, ordered the big platter £40 was disappointing for the price the quality of the food was sub par you could probably get for the supermarket. I fully understand it was Saturday and busy however didn’t even get checked up on to see if the meal was okay, didn’t see a server for atleast 20/30 minutes to get our bill we ended up just giving up and going down stairs. Really upset and disappointed. props to the host guy was the best part of our night

This place left me an awe! Wonderfully decorated, lovely pictures on the wall, clean and good atmosphere all together. Good service, but not overly exciting. Good IPA, great coffee! Pizza was beautifully cooked. I would definitely recommend!

The staff are so rude, that maybe because a lot are foreign but my goodness I don’t think we received a single smile, a hello or a goodbye from any of the staff. When we approached the cafe,in the courtyard, a boy with frizzy curly blonde hair walked straight past us with an iPad and didn’t even acknowledge us, we then waited inside the door for 10 mins before anyone asked if they could help. The staff have always let you down, I think you need to step it up on training!!

A nice little cafe in the centre of Uppermill. Good selection of eat in food and coffee. Take away selection too. Outside seating area with heating when it's cold. Can get busy at weekends so try and make a reservation.

If I could score zero i would. Really gone down hill since last time I came here. Poor attitude. Waited ages to be served to be told its card only. 'Italian cakes" I'm Italian and the cakes I saw ...most definitely not Italian. Over rated. Don't bother.

Waitress very timid mumbled couldn't hear what she was asking, not her fault but I just couldn't understand her. Didnt seem to get that we just wsnted a snack and didnt cime up with options until one of us said "well can we see a menu" it was just all too much effort. Drink was cold. Service though was quick but couldn't be bothered telling them it was luke warm as it comes out of a machine. Surely they could feel the cup was like a child's drink and luke warm. Would definitely not go back

Waited over 10 minutes to be seated on quiet Friday night with just another couple in the courtyard. Staff lacked attentiveness and ended up sitting myself down and ordering on the app. Only waited 10 mins for my flat white to come which was no problem at all. However the waitress who brought my coffee to the table had attitude and might as well of thrown it on the table. The coffee was good but after working at this establishment and knowing the owner’s high standards of service the staff need to pick up their game.
