Captain's in Brighton and Hove

At first, I thought the service was good, but the items I ordered never arrived and were given to customers who came later. If you tell the waiter again, he will bring it now! However, after waiting for a while, it finally came out. Maybe it's popular because they give away refills of chips, but personally I don't go there anymore.

It was alright. I would go here again, is right next to the sea life centre which is nice. But the price was a bit expensive I paid £54. I would rate it a solid 4 out of 5

Love the fish n chips, cod is one of the best ever had

If you’re looking for an authentic fish and chips experience, look no further than Captains! We shared a large cod and chips between the two of us and that was more than enough. Good price for the portion size. Definitely will be returning!

We had a family trip from Isle of Wight, and found this chip shop, was the nicest fish and chips we’ve tasted, the staff were friendly and would highly recommend anyone visiting Brighton to pop in , thank you for our lovely meal

Stopped for chips/curry sauce/gravy. Chips & curry sauce was average and gravy was weak. Near on £7 seemed a bit steep for chips & curry sauce. Also condements did not look that clean and topped up.

Exceptionally good fish and chips, cod was exactly as advertised! Large was large! And nice and thick, chips perfectly cooked I'd say, definitely the best I've had for a few years! And I've eaten in the best places!! Only downside, we were told we couldn't eat inside as it was busy? But we could see free tables? Therefore, we ordered 3 large cod and chips from the takeaway only to see a family leave the restaurant and then was told we couldn't go inside as the takeaway was a separate business?? But that said, it was definitely worth it

The atmosphere is nice, the store is spacious, the owner and clerks are friendly, and most of all, the fish and chips are really delicious!! Even though I hate fish cutlet, I enjoyed it. The batter is thin and crispy, and the cod fish itself is moist, soft, and so delicious! The menu is Captain’s Cod & chips. French fries are ordinary. After eating almost all of it, the owner came over and asked if the taste was good and if he would like some more fries. I asked and refilled it. For those of you who tried fish and chips in London and were disappointed, try fish and chips one more time in Brighton!!

This is the second time we’ve been, had dinner here with my sister, lovely Cod and Chips, had our dog with us and they were very accommodating. We had a lovely chat with the owner and the staff were amazing friendly people. Would definitely recommend this place!

One of the best battered fish I’ve ever had. Well presented and very filling. Came with tartar sauce and the waitress was fast, efficient, polite and came ready with our sauce caddy. Only gripe was the small portion of chips that cooled fast in the basket it came in but we were very full and the owner offered to give us more so it’s fine!! We appreciate it!

Great fried cod, light and crispy batter coating fresh tasty fish. It looked very nice inside, and the presentation of their fish and chips to dine in looked very good, but you definitely get more chips with a takeout!

We waited for about 40 minutes for someone to take our order. After taking our order it took ages for our food to arrive. Our drinks came after our food. Fish was nice but chips were mediocre.

It was a cold Monday evening and we were in there for an early supper at 5pm. Service was quick, music was great and the food delicious. The fish was cooked beautifully. The chips were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside and not greasy at all, prepared and cooked fresh, not frozen. A great innovation was the free refill of the chips, saving waste. When other places have closed for the season, they were still open until 9pm. I highly recommend this restaurant

I'm visiting Brighton for the first time. Seems like it's kind of expected to have some fish & chips while in the UK, right? Glad I did. The portions were large and included more chips if you wanted them. I could barely finish what I had. It's a no frills place. Not fancy at all. But looked clean. Limited menu which is probably why it was so good. Nice waiter. Great lunch experience.

Just want to make everybody aware of this fabulous restaurant spot in Brighton. We dined in and were so impressed with absolutely everything, service,wonderful fish and chips, topped up without asking. We will definitely recommend and return.

This has become a must each time we come to Brighton - tasty cod and chips, great curry sauce, decent portion sizes and a well stocked bar. What's not to like!

Superior Fish and Chips with a side of genuine hospitality I traveled from Colorado, USA to the London for work and I had the opportunity to bring along my father with me. He was born in the UK and as we were planning various things to do, he had reminisced about going down to the coast as a child to play in the arcades and eating the best fish and chips. As he was telling me about his childhood, I knew immediately I wanted to relive it with him. We were able to catch a quick train to Brighton from London and on the trip down I started to do my research on finding a great place to eat our lunch and landed on Captain’s. A great place right on the water by the pier. After my dad and I played in the arcade on the pier and bought Brighton Rock candy to enjoy on the trip back to London we headed over to Captain’s. As we walked in, we were happily greeted and brought to our table. We both ordered the Fish and Chip’s and I got an extra side of fried scampi. To drink, my dad got a coke and I went for the Brixton Brewery West Coast IPA. Our drinks came right away, and I have to say the Brixton IPA was great! This is coming from a guy living in Colorado beer country. After some chatting between my dad and I our cooked to order meal came out. The batter used at Captain’s is from a 35-year-old secret recipe and only the highest quality fish and locally sourced potatoes are used. I knew I was in for something good. As we took our first bites it was evident we found the right place. The fish was perfectly fried. The outside was crisp, not crunchy and the fish was tender, moist and delicious on the inside. The chips were cut the exact right length, fried golden brown with excellent crisp on the outside and the precise balance of fluffy on the inside. I was super happy about ordered the scampi too as that was a nice extra treat. We even got an extra basket of chips on the house to top us off! The wait staff and Pam were superb! All took the time to speak with us and really made this a great experience for me and my dad reliving his youth. I can understand why it was so memorable for him and now thanks to Captain’s and their crew it has become an everlasting memory for me too! I will be back with my children soon and highly recommend this great establishment. Cheers!

We enjoyed a fantastic fish and chips meal at Captain’s before heading to see Brighton Fc. The restaurant is perfectly located next to the pier/beach, the food is great and the service (especially from Pam) is welcoming and friendly - I would definitely recommend a visit.

Best fish and chips. Loved the free refill on the chips and the curry sauce was up there with one of the best I've had. Reasonably priced for Brighton. Restaurant feel when sitting in. Amazing cocktails. Staff were all really friendly and attentive. Thanks to Billy and staff for a great experience

We stumbled across this place and so glad we did. My husband & I agreed that this is by far, the best fish & chips we have ever tasted. The fish is unbelievably fresh, very generous portions & with refillable chips, ( which we didnt need)and not greasy which is usually the case with this type of food. The food is very well presented too. Honestly, this was a very pleasant end to our afternoon in Brighton & we will not hesitate to travel the one hour plus to eat here again. I have forgotten about the other places we have eaten at in the past during our trips to Brighton already! Well done to Pam & her team for making this place so remarkable and making it stand out from the rest, and for making us feel welcome with your excellent service. See you again soon

I endured the worst food poisoning in my life, because of the old oil used to fry the chips and fish. If the oil was fresh such a huge amount of it in a meal wouldn't do a harm but when it's not fresh and has smoky smell it made my whole night a nightmarish concert of repeatedly vomiting and diarrhea. Also the prices are the highest in the area. Awful experience. Change the oil frequently lads!

I went on the guide's recommendation and it was delicious. But for 20,000 Won per piece, it's a bargain. It's a fish cutlet haha.

Amazing! The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside, while the chips were golden and seasoned just right. The portion size was generous, and the seaside atmosphere made it even better. Definitely a must-try if you're in Brighton and craving classic British comfort food!

Very well cooked cod which had fluffy batter and clearly cooked by someone who knows what they are doing. Better than the average chippy. My children and I were warmly greeted and served politely and promptly. Decent portions and prices too. Worth a visit.

I came with my wife and her friends visiting from Mexico and they were eating their first ever fish and chips - and what a place to have it! Probably among the best fish and chips I've ever had too. The chips are crunchy and you get a free refill. Good beers on tap too. The staff were very friendly and welcoming throughout and even tried practicing their Spanish with our friends. Good value too. We really enjoyed the vibe and the meal - I'll definitely return on my next trip to Brighton. Thank you

Great staff and great food with some nice music and an all round pleasant atmosphere

I came across this restaurant on a cool October evening. Most places nearby were closed due to the season. Sukh, one of the partners, gave permission to other employees and was serving three tables alone, including me. I liked the fish and chips. But more importantly, Sukh's sincere conversation. We talked about India. We talked about how he could renew the boat plate he bought from Güral Porselen years ago and was the only one he had left. We talked about Kuşadası and the Turkish tent. I know from my trip to India 20 years ago. Some Indians will win your heart with their naivety unique to this nation. Suhk was a similar person. I left saying I hope I will have the chance to come again. I recommend it to those who prioritize the taste of the food rather than the environment.

The cod was perfect... crispy batter, and not soggy on the inside. The chips were incredibly moreish. This spot will definitely be my go to in Brighton from now on. The staff were lovely!

Great quality cod with a large portion of chips as standard. Cooked and tasted to perfection. We sat inside which had a lovely atmosphere. The staff are fantastic. Thankyou for a nice time.

Captain’s is probably a tourist trap. The cod is good but too greasy. The chips are soft and not crispy. Sadly, the tartare sauce is not homemade because apparently « clients did not like it when they used to make it from scratch » said the boss. The atmosphere is also very strange, I saw one of the waitresses give middle fingers at the boss in the middle of the restaurant. The staff looks in general not happy to be here and tired. The boss was like a hawk looking at the waiters and telling them off when they did something. He was walking around the restaurant on the phone when he was not watching the staff work. It was quite pricy for what it was. I do not recommend and will not come back.

Great Fish and Chips very light and crispy with homemade chunky chips. Which is high praise considering as I'm from Yorkshire and we pride ourselves on good fish and chips. Top service aswell.

My daughter myself, two Grandsons & a sausage dog ate at ‘Captains’ yesterday, the weather was beautiful so we sat outside next to the beach, all of the staff were so helpful including helping us lift the pushchairs up onto the decking, bringing our food drinks out to us, nothing was too much trouble! Chips sausage & drinks were lovely, Thank you Captains!

First time here and it was great! Fish & chips was cooked really well, not greasy, chips top up was offered which was a great touch! Service was nice and friendly, not intrusive at all. Great location!

Had lunch here today and loved it. I come to Brighton twice a year and I have tried many of the fish and chip offerings along the beach. This is by far my favourite. Batter is light and fish is tasty. I was offered free refills on my chips, which were great. Service was friendly and smiles were very genuine. I will be back!

We are in the restaurant since the opening. They took 40 minutes to prepare for 2 dishes and also we need to ask for just the tap water and the bill for 3 times to get it.

Lovely restaurant. This was our first day visiting Brighton and dashed in here to avoid the rain. One of the staff saw us coming with our pram and opened the door for us and insisted on helping us up the step with it. All the staff were very friendly and attentive and very good with all the kids in there. I especially liked that they brought a little plate and cutlery out when we said our baby would be helping herself to our food. The food was very good and there was plenty on the menu. A lovely, friendly atmosphere.

Just came in for chips and they were fantastic! Even given a free pot of gravy to try which was lovely in terms of eating and thoughtfulness so really nice

I would like to try the Fish and Chips another time, but had a portion of chips and these were the best ones I have had in a long time! They were super chunky, and I actually prefer that, the bigger the chip the better I usually find. Whatever potatoes and oil they are using give a great taste and they were cooked perfectly. The people serving were friendly and I don't think it was expensive considering the generous portion. Nice coffee too.
