I stayed nearby for a little solo trip away and popped into here for my Wednesday evening treat. Atmosphere was delightful, staff so friendly, and the food was great - good for veggies too. One of the best pubs i've been to in a long time. The nostalgia of a toilet block separate from the pub building too. Just remember it's cash only.

The Carpenters Arms speaks for itself as they were booked up when we called in on a Sunday, the food looked and smelled delicious however we only popped in for a pint, even so the staff were very accommodating especially as we had Henry our doggie with us.. A great olde worlde pub. Sunday lunch was average. Just a bit bland for me but that's my personal taste. Very difficult to have an itemised bill or see the prices for the Sunday lunch/dessert menu even though I asked for one. Having said that, lovely staff, always friendly and what a fabulous environment

Charming, off the beaten track country inn with lots of character. Given very warm welcome by Sharon who promptly showed us to a table and took our drinks order. A pint of Butty Bach and Welsh cider went down a treat whilst deciding what to eat from a good choice of food at very reasonable prices. We opted for the faggots on the specials board and were not disappointed - served piping hot with rich onion gravy , mash and mushy peas. Absolutely delicious ! One bit of information - payment is by cash or cheque only. Would definitely recommend.

This is a lovely little pub, with great food, good service, and a very cosy and relaxed atmosphere. We particularly loved the steaks, which were huge, tender, and perfectly cooked, and also the steak and ale pie with its unusual crust (thin crust instead of puff pastry).

An impromptu visit with friends after a day out in the area for a quick pint. Choice for of two draught beers, Wadworths X and one of my all time favourites Butty Bach. Perhaps one of the best pints of Butty I’ve ever had in the most idyllic of settings. The beer was good we decided to have another and the food being served to others looked so good we checked out the menu, which was great and very well priced. Refreshingly the pub is cash only (rather that then the annoying trend to card only) I had the richest steak and Guinness pie with chips and peas which was perfect. If you want a great pint, fantastic food in a classic country pub with amazing views of the Skirrid this is the place to go .

A group of us visited the carpenters arms after a day ringing church bells. Even though we had not booked (we were a group of eight) the staff made us very welcome and took our order for food which arrived very quickly. I had the beef and Guinness pie which was delicious, well seasoned and the pastry was perfect. My partner had the faggots which were also delicious (I tried them!) and well seasoned, served with loads of tasty gravy. Very reasonably priced too, what more can you ask for? Beer was also exceptional. Well conditioned, the cellar is clearly well looked after. Looking forward to visiting again and highly recommend the carpenters arms.

“Payment can be made by CASH or cheque, sorry we do NOT take cards” !!! I had no cash. When I said to the barmaid….”can I just ask, out of curiosity, why you don’t take cards ?” ….she replied that she didn’t know, that they never had and that the owner was ‘old fashioned’. Rather than have us all go hungry and thirsty at the end of a long day ringing church bells my friend offered to lend us all money….she luckily had enough as she’d collected all our bell-ringing subs for the day. The food arrived 45 MINUTES LATER and was nothing special. One of us had the pie and frozen chips, frozen peas and the pastry on top of the pie was soggy….I would have sent it back. My faggots were ok, under seasoned and dry with an inadequate amount of gravy. Resolving never to return or recommend the place I headed in search of the loos. I was stopped by a server, she challenged “you’re the one who complained about the cash only aren’t you”…. She proceeded to aggressively reprimand me for ‘complaining’ to the barmaid. When I could get a word in I pointed out that I had merely asked a question, the couple in front of me had left as they had no cash, and in any other circumstance I would have had to leave also. I was told that we were lucky (really !) to get a table (bench outside) and that people book online to eat, so know to bring cash ( it’s in the middle of nowhere, no cash machines !). I told her that it wouldn’t be a problem in the future as I had no intention of ever returning with either family or friends, and could not recommend any business that spoke to its customers in such a manner. The food is expensive for what it is, is less than average tasting and I’d urge you to eat at The Pandy Inn instead of this place. Once home I checked their web site and it makes no mention of it being a CASH ONLY establishment. And there is no provision to book online !

After a long, long walk we were starving hungry and found Vera and her pub The Carpenters just as they were finishing serving lunch. This didn't present as a problem (unlike many other establishments we've visited) and our order was duly taken. We were quietly impressed by this kind act of hospitality but our admiration was about to hit new heights as, after our delicious Sunday roast, we were told as we prepared to pay that no cards were accepted, that it was cash only. Unfortunately we were all carrying cards but without changing stride Sharon, our host, just asked us to send the cash in an envelope when we got home. In this age of meanness and keyboard criticism it was humbling to find an establishment that trusted in humans. The cash was duly sent and a mental note was made; go back to the Carpenter's Arms in Walterstone. Thank you Sharon and thank you Vera. Long may your lovely pub prosper

A great little British Pub friendly and welcoming. Whoever looks after the cellar knows their stuff as the local Butty Bach beer was perfect. In fact it was so good I made a trip to the brewery the next day to take home. We did eat Sunday roast here and everything was great but the mark down was for the beef which is over cooked and just a couple of big tough slabs of chewy leather which just let down the other bits of the meal such as the delicious creamed cabbage and cauliflower cheese. One small roast potato was a bit of let down. All they need to do is increase the roast potato count by one, cook the beef medium rare and use a meat slicer to cut it wafer thin. That way they’d only have to use the same amount of beef as one slab whilst appearing to look very generous. I’ve gone on about one negative I know, personallyId be grateful to have the Carpenters Arms as my local pub.

You will struggle to find a friendlier or cosier pub than the Carpenters - you will be warmly welcomed. The gorgeous inn is intimate though not cramped and is thoroughly warmed by a huge open fire in the colder months. The service is excellent and both times we visited we were visited by the chef to ask how we were. However, the food could be better. Although the cuts of meat are fantastic and superbly cooked, it feels as though the rest of the meal relies on this. Other than the meat, the food is sadly bland, basic, and reminiscent of earlier times.
