Chen's Chinese Takeaway in Dundee City

Just had the worst chinese takeaway from here in my life. I've been previously and it was never THIS bad. Ordered honey chilli chicken,battered chicken with fried rice. Usually when ordering this I'll get small battered pieces of chicken. Tonight I got what can only be described as a piece of battered Iceland chicken steak, cut into 6 pieces. It was put In a tub with a very small amount of tasteless, watery as hell sauce that was rank. The batter was all slimy and fell off the chicken before I even started. The rice was dry, tasteless, cold and horrible. I sometimes go here when my usual chinese is shut or for a change, but will never be back total waste of 16 quid. Still hungry as binned most of it

Put it this way, if I ever need to order from another Chinese I'm always disappointed, food is just on another level to other places in dundee, everything is always delicious, favourites are chicken and cheese rolls with chilli oil, kung po chicken & Singapore noodles.

Food's great, but be prepared to wait a lot longer than suggested. Regularly wait 2 hours plus for delivery!

I had a couple of good experiences and one bad. I wouldn’t order the lemon chicken. But the fried rice, Szcheuan chicken, chilli chicken are great! Have good portions and quick service!

I've never gone to any other Chinese takeaway for year's as Chens was the best one by far. However, the last couple of times I've ordered a chicken curry, the sauce has been so hot, the food was inedible. I've always loved the chicken curry and thought the last time I ordered it was just a blip and it was made really hot by accident but It happened again after that and then again tonight when I got chips and curry sauce. Unfortunately I had to throw it all in the bin as the sauce was far too spicy to eat. Only for that reason, I never gave 5 stars for food. Calm the curry sauce down a bit and make it like it used to be and I'd happily give 5 stars.

Great place for takeaway Chinese quisine. Consistently supplies the best of Chinese food as a consequence of a proprietor who takes a pride in what he produces. A fairly small unpretentious establishment but it's the food that counts. Recommended.

First time to this takeaway. Friendly and welcoming service as soon as we walked in the door. Good banter with staff whilst trying to accomodate my wife's dietry requirements. Food was great, good portions, will definately be back and using this takeaway hereafter.

Mongolian beef and salt and pepper chips was nice, mild duck curry was the worst curry I can remember, it looked like it had been watered down with oil, VERY watered-down curry with a layer of reddish looking oil on the top, was supposed to be mild but far from it, i used to order here regularly and couldn't remember why I stopped , tonight sadly showed me why. Very disappointed.

Never again had to pay extra as delivery driver had no change Orderded prawn crackers but they were missing and that was not the first time But I let it go Not again Seems to be a habit Won’t order from them again food not that good either

Answer your phone! It's really simple! Ordered at 4. Delivery estimate 5:45. Now 6:45 and no one will answer the phone. 🙃 If you can't be bothered to answer the phone, a simple courtesy text or anything is better than simply ignoring your customers. Edit - You lost a loyal customer and with cheek like that you are the one that should be doing better. No worries, plenty of other Chinese places in the city who would value someone's custom. Good riddance.

Got a chicken curry asked for it extra hot so was recommended getting a 3 out of 12 in the hot chart if 3 is hot I wouldn't like to try 12 as it was pretty hot but tasted great and chicken was up there with the best I've had from a Chinese. Pity about the salt and pepper chips if the chicken was the best I've had the chips were probably the worst I've had hardly any seasoning in them at all and chips weren't crispy so wouldn't order them again but wd definitely order a curry again.

This was one of my favourite Chinese but unfortunately the last time we ordered food from here it wasn't great. Our chips were hard, the chicken in the curry wasn't the same and the rice was rubbery it tasted like a reheat 😫 I will try here again but unsure if they have been taken over as food wasn't the same standard as usual? Even my partner commented on his dish as well maybe it was just a busy night and orders were going out quick but the food wasn't the standard we normally get from chens. Unsure if chens has been taken over or new chefs? The owner is a brilliant man hopefully he's not left chens

Ordered a takeaway as our usual fave Chinese closed. Had previously heard good reviews from a friend who lived nearby. I didn’t read reviews on here until later and I have to agree with the most recent that this has got to be the worst Chinese food we have ever purchased, not edible, covered in chilli/paprika powder, had to be binned. Tried to call to complain once we opened at home, but got no answer, we had ordered online. Will definitely avoid in future

We had a beautiful takeaway from Chen’s after a lovely waitress recommended them when we were in the Pinecone Cafe earlier today. Service (delivery to our lodge in Piperdam was no problem) and food were first class! Thanks!!!

What has happened to this place!!! We ALWSYS went to Chens but just had a pancake roll - which tasted of soap! Chips were disgusting and curry was not a level 0 - was too spicy to eat - so all in all - couldnt eat anything of our order! I phoned the shop and got an apology but never even asked name - so basically didn’t care! DONT KNOW WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THIS PLACE!!!!

I didn't like mushrooms before trying Chen's chicken and mushroom soup! It is honestly like medicine, I was off work poorly today and it's my go to, a big relief for my icky tummy and works wonders with colds and flus too! It's also a plus that is jam packed with flavour 😋

A nice clean establishment with very friendly staff. The food from this Chinese takeaway is second to none. I went for the usual chicken chow mein extra soy sauce my wife the special fried rice my son and daughter chicken curry fried rice and my son in law got the mongolian beef fried rice also got a side of ribs in honey chilli sauce and pancake roll all cooked absolutely wonderfully definitely be back highly recommended to any Chinese food lovers and well worth the half hour wait.

What the heck has happened to this place? Used to be great but now undoubtedly the worst Chinese in Dundee. Even the basic curry sauce & chips was abysmal. Will never be back! Say they offer “spice levels” to dishes but actually mean water will be added accordingly to make dishes less spicy. The curry sauce was like water. None of my family could eat the food. Visit at your own peril.

Simply a different Class from most places. House Special with green peppers in back bean sauce I find delicious and the other half likes a nippy chicken 'n' mushroom curry which is excellent too. Our new chinese 😊

Hands down the best Chinese in Dundee. Never ever been disappointed with any food I’ve bought from here. All there soups are unreal! Especially the ‘hot and sour’ one. And there chow mains are to die for. Think I’m in love!

Nice!! Tried the crispy shredded beef, Mongolian lamb and the salt and pepper squid. The Mongolian lamb was the best! It was so tender 😍

Superb! Best delivery in Dundee. Just some minor issues in the last few weeks with little things wrong on the order ie asked for salt & chilli chicken balls and got plain with sweet & sour sauce. And then another asking for level 0 on salt & chilli chicken balls and getting level 1. Apart from these recent mishaps, amazing Chinese.

Extremely disappointed been to chens in the past really enjoyed the food. However tonight's takeaway was pathetic. Special curry fried rice the beef was so tough could not eat it lacking badly in curry sauce. Littlewoods far too many onions. Also order the big spring roll absolutely sudden in Greece basically packed in bean sprouts a couple off slithers of chicken. Don't know no but from the last time I think it could be a change of chef.

Great new ish take away. Staff will take your order and refine it to exactly how you want. However loses a star as last few times iv had beef dishes it was very chewy and stringy they said i had crispy shredded beef. Which i never had! Also have to say its app and website are very bad as they always shut them off so you can't order due to high demand. Sadly has lost my custom alot because of this.

My wife is from South East Asia, she is really picky,, has high expectation of Asian foods. However, she is eally pleased with Chen's curry sauce and Singapore vermicelli. Apparently tastes authentic, just like home

Very busy takeaway especially at weekends because it's so good. Generous portions and very tasty lasted us for two days - yes reheated Chinese is just as good as the first day!

This is now my local Chinese takeaway and I am not disappointed. The duck is plum sauce is now my go-to dish and would highly recommend!

I definitely noticed the lack of msg as it didn't have that fake texture that a lot of Chinese takeaways have. Good portions and arrived ahead of time. My wife liked it but I felt it lacked a bit of punch (maybe my taste buds have been ruined by mag over the years). Overall a nice takeaway, and certainly good if you want something a little different to the usual fare.

Tried this chinese for the 1st time on Saturday, having been recommended by friend. Chicken breast curry ordered. Level 3 Sauce ! Flavour very good, however 5 pieces of chicken were very hard which was very disappointing. How difficult is it, to not overcook chicken.......

I have had a few deliveries and collections and the food has always been delicious and arrived hot and on time when delivered. I have downloaded the app and Chen's is now my preferred Chinese takeaway. Excellent 5 star +

Food is always amazing.Never had a bad meal from here.Only issue is they are usually very busy and when that's the case they ignore the phones.So you are always better to either order online or go into the shop.

Arrived slightly late on delivery but when it arrived the driver explained they don’t use MSG so it might taste a bit different. BUT it was fantastic, best Chinese we’ve had. Tasted amazing, really hot and plenty of it. We’ll be ordering again. Highly recommended Thank you

We're up seeing family and this place had great reviews so thought we would give it a try. We were that impressed we ordered two nights in a row! 🙈 Food was so fresh and full of flavour and we highly recommend the crispy shredded chicken in satay sauce, nice with a bit of spice but don't overdo it as you would ruin the flavour! Also it's nice to see friendly, smiley staff behind the counter, really makes a difference. This place is a must, just wish it was closer to home!! 🙃

Absolutely shocking. £4:10 for what is supposed to be salt and pepper chips. More like a handful of chips with paprika seasoning with 2 bits of veg. When complained told that’s what you get and that’s how business works. Portion of chips £2:20 seasoning £1:90 what a mark up. Rude and unhelpful, 16 year old daughter works nearly 1 hour to pay for that. Definitely won’t be back.

First time we've visited which is always difficult. We didn't understand spice levels and staff were keen to help. Had a varied selection of meals and each and every one was excellent. Even the prawn crackers were that bit better. Glad we tried somewhere new and will definitely return.

We used to order from here regularly, as the food is good. But lately the service has been terrible, with major delays on delivery. Today, our order has been accepted at 16:27, we phoned the restaurant at 17:45, to ask where was the order, as it was still not delivered. The person on the other side said sorry your order is going to be late as it is not cooked yet, and after us asking why, we got shouted at, because the person on the other side said the restaurant is full of big orders that they need to cook first. She then said that the order will be delivered at 18:15. We were also asked if we want to pick the order up ourselves - defeats the point of a Saturday night take out. I guess we only ordered food for 2 people, which is obviously not important for the restaurant, therefore we were expected to wait. I am not sure how far in advance we were expected to order the food, but I think a 2h wait is a little too much. Especially when there is a delivery fee of £2.50 The order arrived at: 18:11 Total wait time from when the order was accepted by the restaurant: 1,41h Total wait time after we phoned the restaurant: 20 min - which i guess is how long it takes to cook the food We got some prawn crackers and a note to say sorry for the delay - which is a nice touch, thats why its a 2 star review.

This takeaway is totally amazing, now my new go to chinese, keep doing what your doing as your food is just delicious.

Had Chicken and onions in black pepper sauce with fried rice and it was amazing.

Ordered my meal for delivery at 5.45pm the total cost with delivery was £33 I had to phone as meal did not arrive at stated time was told it was on the second delivery it eventually arrived at 7.30pm ordered chicken chow mein, chicken fried rice, chicken curry,chilli chicken and a curry sauce and chips will never order again this has to be the worst Chinese I have ever had asked for the mildest sauce (0) for the chicken curry and curry chips the sauce I recieved certainly was not the mildest but the hottest curry sauce I have had the unpleasure of having inedible to make matters worse there was curry sauce on the chicken fried rice also making this inedible so basically over 30 pound for rubbish

Been using Chens since it opened,and It was refreshingly (in our opinion) one of the best Chinese carryouts in Dundee, from the portion sizes/flavours/heat levels/real big chunks of chicken beast and beef.. We've recommended this place to many friends and family as a result... However the last 2 times I've used them(the first I put it down to a one off!) the meals have been disgusting.... No way this was real chicken or beef in the chicken curry or beef dishes.. It was slimey and rubbery (I seriously worry what it was???) .... texture and taste was just all wrong!!! Result was the lot went straight in the bin, as it was basically inedible. It was just too much hassle to return it and complain at the counter!I clearly remember chatting with the owner when it 1st opened about this topic, and he was adament it wld never happen in Chens!! Well it has, and twice for us! and as a result it'll be the last time we waste money in this place again... Very dissapointing

Their chicken and beef have always been spot on, but this stuff was absolutely disgusting, they were both slimy and texture was just all wrong.... Chicken curry and Beef green pepper were both binned as a result...i would have returned both if it wasn't for the hassle! Can clearly remember chatting with the owner when it 1st opened too and discussing this very issue.... with all the guarantees this would not be happening in Chens.This will be the last time I spend money on this place....

Been using this takeaway for a couple of years now always been super. But tonight I orderd a curry and the curry sause was tasteless and had a consistency no thicker than dish water 👎very disappointing..

This is now our ‘go-to’ Chinese. Food always amazing. Especially grateful that they phoned to check where we were as I’d not realised it was collection only - and with a new baby in the house, their offer of delivery was amazing. Exceptional service. We won’t be going anywhere else but here.
