Chung Ying in Birmingham

Great experience last night at Chung Ying. The food was perfect & the service was excellent (the staff were so good with my niece & nephew especially. They were very impressed by “the lollipop man”). I personally loved the extensive vegan menu. The spicy veg dumplings & vegan duck pancakes were my favourites, but pretty much every dish was worth praising. Portion sizes very generous too. Will absolutely be returning in future.

I used to dine here many years ago when I was a meat eater, so was delighted to find they have a Vegan menu. I dined with vegan and non vegan friends, and we all enjoyed the various dishes. I can recommend the set menus . Service was great and I'm looking forward to returning soon.

Don’t bother with dim sum here - go to Ken Ho or Ivy lounge. At least service is better there. Even though they have the “20% off” dim sum they claw this back with charging £20(!!!) Tea prices for 7 adults. Even more expensive than London dim sum. The 20% we “saved” was £26 but having paid £17 for service and £20 for tea, was stupid. Charged 10% for service which was non existent. The waiters were busy hanging around the till just chatting whereas a poor lady was the only one working hard clearing tables. No one was clearing empty plates as we finished them, had to ask them to make room for more food. Had to wait ages to ask someone to refill the tea pot. The boss was having lunch on the table next to ours and that table wasn’t even cleared for a good 30 mins after he left even though the waiters were free.

The food here is absolutely lovely and full of flavor, with a great selection for vegetarians, vegans, and non-vegetarian options alike. We’ve visited twice. During our first visit, the restaurant was extremely busy, and unfortunately, the staff were quite rude. Despite there being empty tables, we had to wait 30 minutes for a seat. However, the food itself was excellent, which somewhat made up for the experience. On our second visit, the atmosphere was completely different. The owner was present, and he was incredibly welcoming and attentive, which made us feel valued as customers. It was also less busy, which likely contributed to a better experience. My only recommendation would be for the owner to ensure the staff consistently provide good customer service, even during busy times. The food is fantastic, but the service needs improvement to match the quality of the meals.

Delicious food and a nice atmosphere! Younger male waiter was pleasant old ones were a bit grumpy - a smile costs nothing! Overall definitely a good place to eat!

Not even mediocre dim sum… small portion, overly salty and bland tea. Each dim sum dish is approximately 7-9£. they do offer 20% off between 10am to 5pm for weekday dim sum tho. We ordered 8 dim sum and two noodle dishes and ended up with 90 pounds bill after discount.

Literally not a bad dish on the menu!! Even the chips are delicious. 20% of Dimsum between 12pm and 5pm makes it even more reasonable. Staff are very friendly. There is covered, heated, outside seating as well as ample inside seating.

The food was incredible! I lived in China for 1.5 years and the food really reminded me of the food I had there. They have a massive vegan menu, literally way too many options to choose from. Cannot recommend it enough for vegans. Will definitely be coming back!

Missing a few things on the menu (no duck?!) but the food was nice. Would have been nice to see the inside dining area but outside area is comfortable enough.

Great restaurant, been here a few times and it is consistently high quality food, friendly quick servers, and very generous portions on the set menu.

Had a really good meal with my team. We chose the deluxe set meal with a couple of extra dishes. All the starters and mains were delicious including Thai style chicken wings, crispy duck, spicy beef and many other high quality dishes including some amazing crispy pork belly accompanied by rice etc. Service was quick and attentive. On the pricey side but worth it for the quality.

The Dr Finlay’s Private Practice team have had TWO Christmas team Meals at Chung Ying this year and both were excellent. Especially as some of our team are gluten free! William Wong and the team looked after us and the food and atmosphere are excellent!!

Never got to try the food of the atmosphere but I did experience the rude waiter. Waiting my turn he pushed me out side then denied I’d been waiting over 30 minutes also pushed people away who had a booking.Miss lead several groups of waiting people saying they had free tables. Might give it another go but book next time.

I was in Birmingham on Sunday and decided to visit the Chung Ying restaurant. I have visited many, many Chinese restaurant all over the world and throughout the UK. The meal I had here was exceptionally good! I had a selection of Dim Sum as my starter and some Young Chow fried rice with some Belly Pork and picked cabbage. Wow! What excellent Chinese flavours. I would certainly recommend this restaurant if you want authentic Cantonese Chinese food.

This was my first time coming for dim sum. Although we had to sit outside, the heater was on full blast, so it was quite warm. The dim sum was okay, though the turnip cake was a bit too soft. Initially, I thought I’d come back next time. But something happened when we paid the bill that really bothered me, so I probably won’t come again. When we were paying, the female server asked if we had any cash. I told her I didn’t, and the nearby ATM was broken, so I couldn’t withdraw any money. I then asked her if they didn’t accept cards, and she replied that they preferred to take cash. So I asked her if that meant no 20% off (dim sum is currently 20% off daily from 11 am to 5 pm). She reluctantly said yes. I told her I really didn’t have any cash, and then she actually said, “Well, next time remember to bring some!” HA-HA! I’m sure she wouldn’t have said that if I were white. No next time. Goodbye!

Visited Chung Ying on a few occasions and it never lets you down. The staff add a family feel to it and always make you feel welcome. Steamed dumplings are a personal favourite.

Food is a bit pricey, but it is so good. I guarantee it's worth it. No regrets. I have been here 4 times now, and honestly, it's becoming my favourite asian spot in town

Not good when busy. Just look at the custard buns we got in the picture below. This was compared to the table we were sitting next to who got liquid custard just because they were recording their experience… the portion size was also smaller than usual because it was busy. Will not come again when it is so busy. Plus they put so much red food dye in the char siu I thought the pork was alive and bleeding still😅

A welcomed return after many years! So much has changed. Now, book in at outdoor extension. Due to this, staff seem off putting and dismissive.

Wow! Went for the dim sum and was absolutely delighted with everything we ate. I am still thinking about the ribs and wondering how something can be so delectable. Excellent waiter, very funny and sweet. Will be back to try main menu items.

Good to see 6 or 7 vegan main options - the more plant-based options the better, so please introduce more sweet and savoury vegan dishes. The seating area was quite open and loud... Would benefit from some quiet corners for people to sit and relax.

Algunos de nosotros obtuvimos el menú A; algunos lo serán. Creo que los menús establecidos son una buena relación calidad-precio en general, pero el compromiso no es necesariamente disfrutar de cada plato servido. Los camareros que sirvieron a nuestra mesa eran muy buenos y muy agradables, pero algunos de los miembros del personal de la casa eran asquerosos y antipáticos. Un montón de familias con niños pequeños en el interior que es encantador de ver, pero se puso un poco ruidoso a veces (no hay culpa del restaurante aquí). Se acomodaron a la alergia a los frutos secos de mi hermano, que era genial.

Food was nice but felt quite overpriced considering it just tasted like a good takeaway. The waiters that served our table were very good and really nice but some of the front of house staff were gruff and unfriendly. Lots of families with young children inside which is lovely to see but got a little loud at times (no fault of the restaurant here). They accommodated my brother’s nut allergy which was great.

I ordered crab meat from this restaurant about a year ago, and I’m still dealing with the consequences. After eating their food, I was sick for 13 days, with constant vomiting and diarrhea that left me unable to leave the toilet. My gut was so severely damaged that I had to be hospitalized and undergo a colonoscopy. As a result of this food poisoning, I developed IBS, which I’m still struggling with to this day. This experience has completely changed my life, and my gut has never been the same. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Authentic and brilliant, very full menu, but the staff will help, the food is excellent and I can't wait to return. Do make a booking it gets very busy very quickly from six pm onwards

Went on a Sunday afternoon and it was packed so it must be good. Food was delicious and prices reasonable.

Food filled a hile but it wasn't that tasty. Had dim sum and the prawns where over cooked. Asked for soy sauce and chili oil it never arrived.

Good food. Service OK but your just a number.

Visitó a finales de septiembre mientras estaba fuera con el trabajo. Realmente ocupado viernes por la noche y el restaurante estaba lleno, pero el personal logró apretarme. Dim Dum era excelente, sin duda visitar de nuevo!

Honestly fantastic quality food for fairly reasonable prices. It's worth noting that it's cheaper to dine in than it is to get delivery!

We wanted to have a special meal together as a family before my youngest went off to uni so Chung Ying was the obvious choice. We eat here on a very regular basis and the food is always good. From the Dim Sum steamed dumplings we had the spicy pork dumpling and the king prawn and chive. Both beautiful – the king prawns were particularly fresh and succulent. I ordered the vegan Sichuan Aubergine even though none of us is vegan – it is fantastic. Also fillet beef with cumin, pork chow mein, garlic and chilli prawns, salt and chilli squid and some other bits and pieces. Service brilliant as ever with Henry and the team. We had prepared for this as the portions are generous so had not eaten much during the day - however, we ate the lot – and waddled home. Thank you so much (again).

Pedimos nuestras bebidas y seleccionamos una serie de "Dim Sum Dishess" del extenso menú. Tanto las bebidas como la comida fueron servidas muy rápidamente por un personal atento y eficiente. La comida estaba muy caliente y sabrosa. ¡No dudamos en recomendar Chung Ying a familiares y amigos!

Used this restaurant before going to the Hipperdrome theater, that was a mistake there were plenty of other restaurants to chose from. The service was poor the food was a very low standard, however the pricing very high and confusing. Needless to say we won't be going back there again.

We had high hopes after reading such good reviews but were sadly disappointed. Expecting authentic, clean flavours from a restaurant in the heart of Chinatown, we were served up a meal of the usual 'Takeaway' quality. Had it not been swimming in dark soy sauce, the Char Siu pork would have been tasteless. The other main dish was almost as bland - Sichuan king prawns, which were fried in a gloopy sauce of sliced onion, strips of red and green peppers and sliced red chillies. Having asked what the 'mixed vegetables' conisted of, I was told by the waitress that she didn't know. She referred me to a colleague who managed "Some carrot and others....". So I opted for the Sichuan aubergine - sadly, just a veg cooked in the same gloopy sauce as the prawns. Given that this place has a lot of competition and the food was no better than in our local (only) Chinese restaurant (at a fraction of the price), we felt the meal was overpriced. For the dishes mentioned above plus one portion of egg fried rice and a bottle of water, we were charged £63.80

It is by far the best Chinese food I have had in Europe, it is the most faithful thing I have eaten to when I was there. I will return every time I visit the city. The service is fast and pleasant. The spacious and cozy outdoor terrace. My favorite Asian restaurant.

Always amazing great food good prices enjoyable all round

Turned up as a family of four on a Saturday afternoon for eats after finding on Google. We were seated in the area that is a lean-to, but is comfortable and fitted with lights and heat. We thought it might be lovely sat here in a summer rain shower actually. Only detracting point is a couple of the mats on the floor could do with a good clean, but otherwise all the tables and chairs were clean and comfortable. Service was courteous while we were there. The area we were sat in wasn't empty, but not hugely busy - probably about a 35% occupancy in this area. On ordering we were asked if the starters should come at the same time as the dim sum, which they did. The menu is impressive!!! The Dim Sum selection is extensive, as is the main menu. Two of us had the "set meal for two or more", while two of us had dim sum and a main from the menu. Everything arrived piping hot and fresh cooked. And plenty of it! Both the set meal and individual selections were great. The food quality was superb. Highlights that we had were the spicy pork and chive dumplings, and the lamb with ginger and spring onion. Prices were about as expected: Meal for four coming in at about £130 (including drinks). This restaurant is only a few minutes walk from the main Birmingham New St station. Chinatown is across the road. Recommended. We would certainly go here again.

Plenty to choose from on the menu. Had some really tasty dim sum and a spicy crispy squid main course. Love the food here, some of the best Chinese food in Birmingham. The menu is huge, there is so much variety to choose from.

Best Chinese food I’ve eaten in as long as I can remember. Service was quick and efficient, portions were good and price was reasonable. We had the set menu for 2 and couldn’t fault a thing, flavours were excellent as was the quality of the ingredients. I wish this was in my doorstep.

The food was lovely and the service was brilliant, but felt a little rushed

A glorious experience. A treat for our son on his birthday. Attentive, kindly waiting staff, who explained the menu beautifully, delicious food (beyond tasty, fresh, fragrant and well presented), and to cap it all, two waiters surprised my little boy by singing Happy Birthday to him without warning, with cake and a candle. It was just all joyful, and we can't wait to return to try some other dishes.

This was our first visit and will not be our last. Opening at 11:00 means the restaurant is now open an hour earlier. It seemed busy enough to justify the earlier opening. We had a range of the dim sum and they were all excellent before 17:00 there is a discount so good value as well. Good service as well. We will be back.

Do not come here unless you like the tasye of ultra processed washing up l8quid poor quality food that has never even looked at any garlic or ginger. No flavour.

Had lunch here yesterday. Food was ok but not the best. The service was terrible, aside from it being slow and unaccommodating they were even unaware of your proper order. You also need to ask them about everything such as a sauce that should be offered when you ordered dimsums. We ordered around 6 dishes but when they served the first 3 we’ve been told that our orders were complete. We’ve been asked for drinks and told them what we wanted but it didn’t arrived until you follow it up in the middle of your meal. We were about to finish the first 3 dishes which only consisted of rice, congee and fried squid that’s when we only managed to get one of their staffs attention. They were too quick to get your finished dishes and serve your bill but other than that we experienced the opposite.

Absolutely wonderful food, service and atmosphere. We did book in advance and were seated immediately, our orders were taken quickly and drinks brought fast. All of our food was vegetarian and we were shocked at how quickly it came to our table and how hot and fresh it was - it was also the most delicious vegetarian food we have had and we were blown away by the experience. All servers went above and beyond, there was a lovely vibe throughout and a relaxed atmosphere and we felt everyone dining in seemed to be having an enjoyable evening and were being well looked after too. I couldn't fault it. Honestly it was just really lovely to see. It just has such a good vibe and the food is so good, we travelled for our wedding anniversary and will be back next time too, if not before!

Went for food this evening and my main complaint is there is soooo many options. Staff were friendly..atmosphere was lovely and chill this evening and my dish which was fried beef in satay sauce and egg fried rice was tasty

Came for a meal before a show. The service was amazing and the food was delicious! It is extremely well priced. When we come back to Birmingham we will be coming back to eat here!

Always great food, delicious dim sum

Typical Chinese resteraunt, fast and furious. I shall return as the food was good.

Food was lovely, however it took an hour for our starter to be served after chasing it up twice. No apology. Main course came whilst still eating starter. Funnily the bill came very speedily and grabbed away from us when we didn't pay a service charge.

The decoration is nice and they had the Euros (football) playing on a projector. The "hot and sour soup" will be very unsatisfying to those who grew up with the authentic dish: it's not "hot" - the soul of the dish is black pepper and there is not enough; it's not "sour" - there is not enough vinegar, another core ingredient; it's not "soup" - there was too much starch, it had an uneven and gloopy texture. The bamboo shoot and beancurd in the dish is good quality though, so there's no problem with the ingredient sources. The staff, although friendly and having removed the dish from our bill - for which we are grateful - seemed uninterested in faithfully reproducing the dish from home: they explained they were just catering to British preferences. This is fair enough, but I believe they would be able to attract even more repeat customers by, for example, making it clear (e.g. in Chinese) when a dish is substantially modified, so that everyone can come home happy with their full stomach, no regrets, and understand what they are ordering. In order to improve the service and leave customers feeling better about their experience, I suggest Dale Carnegie's "How To Win Friends And Influence People"; the manager was friendly and polite, but the waiter who handled our case was a little defensive and upset when we made complaints about the hot and sour soup after we had eaten a moderate part of it. It was not that we wanted it to be refunded or redone - we just wanted to let you know our thoughts in case it could help you improve the dish - but I think the waiter received only the former impression and reacted sharply - while I understand their feelings in that moment, it is better for the customer experience to have staff listen to the end of the statement before responding. The crispy pork belly was alright - it is of the typical quality that can be found in a medium cost lunch in Hong Kong - the only order size on the menu is a little large.

Visited last night.Food was excellent!We were going to a show,and everything was served so that we arrived well fed. Staff very smart and helpful. We had a set menu,plenty for us to eat and we took some home. It was very busy,plus euros showing so a bit noisy,but that my hearing!

The menu is big and there is a lot of option ! My friend ordered some good food but on my side it was a bit disappointing… Also, I am sure it is a good Cantonese restaurant !
