My partner and I had never had a hotpot before and were so excited to try it as we were up in york for a weekend. When we came in it was dead quiet - nit the staffs fault as they were both absolutely lovely. They showed us how to order and recommended items. We got a two soup with a few items each, which were all nice. The squid wasn’t good and we did have to send it back and have it off the bill as it tasted as though it had been frozen (which is likely as the cauliflower was still frozen when it came out but that’s not bad for veg in this context). The sticky rice was most definitely microwaved BUT the fact we could design our own dips was brilliant - and had allergens up on the wall too. Our drinks were lovely (i got the Sparking Strawberry and it was amazing!!). Considering all of this, and the fact we had to ask to pay with card rather than cash or bank transfer, we do think the bill was a bit expensive. (£74 for one drink, two items and a hotpot flavour each, feels a bit steep to say the least!!!)

We have had similar meals but not this exact style of cooking and eating. The woman who served us was very good and explained well . . . We opted for a spicy broth as we can handle heat, she was clear we shouldn't go hotter than mild and to be fair she was right lol We had a good mix of ingredients and it was all very lovely. Perhaps a bit pricey in my view but it wouldn't put me off recommending this to others

Our first ever hot pot experience and I would 10/10 recommend. There were 6 of us around a table and we paid around £20pp (without drinks) and it was a nice substantial meal. We had three flavours of hot pot soup - tomato, mushroom and (mild) spicy hot. We were recommended mild… and goodness we were glad we didn’t go any spicier! If you’re not into spicy then maybe stick to the tomato/mushroom broths. Also I didn’t realise but they top up the soup as you’re eating so you can basically have as much as you like. We loved the spicy beef, marbled beef, lotus root, rice cakes and broccoli. Also potato and pak choi were good additions. We skipped on the make-your-own sauce bar because we kind of had a lot going on, but I’d love to try that next time. Will be back!

We found this by chance as we were going to the theatre wanted something close by.. the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The place was very clean. The food and service fantastic .. I regret that I couldn’t eat it all but gave it a good try. The meals reasonably priced and drinks probably on par with most restaurants.. would definitely recommend

Once you get over the novelty of cooking your own meal its a great experience. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable, keen to guide and the food (both the broth and the set menu) was delicious. Previous reviewers have commented that cards are not accepted - this is no longer the case. Well worth it.

This is our first time trying something so different. A boiling broth in which you cook your own meat and vegetables. Definitely a heathy option. The tomato and mushroom broth was very good. We found the spicy broth too strong as it was full of peppercorns and chilli flakes. Worth a try. Next time we might go for the set menu

My partner and I walked past in the day time and were intrigued so booked a meal for that night. When you sit down you are given a printed guide of how long to cook the different items for etc and then you order on a tablet. We ordered 3 broths and the spicy beef And mixed meatballs. We also ordered noodles. The flavours were fantastic but the beef was far too spicey. We then ordered chicken rolls which were good and glass noodles (not so good) We eventually figured out what we were meant to be doing and really enjoyed it, especially using the condiments bar to flavour our own food. This worked well as my partner likes his food really spicey and I prefer mild flavours. We would visit again when we visit York.

Do not eat here if you want a Chicken Chow Mein. This is not your `run of the mill` Chinese restaurant. You chose your Hotpot [cooking flavour], choose your meats, choose your add ons. The meats and fish are raw and you cook it in the hotpot. You cook it as long as you want to from 30 seconds to minutes. We had beef, chicken and fish along with a mushroom hotpot and a chilli hotpot plus a bowl of rice. The whole meal was was brilliant. Yes it is expensive [but worth it] and we paid by card payment?? !! If you just want to be served a plate of food then this may not be for you. We would definitely eat at this restaurant again. The staff were very helpful and guided us how to order and even cook the food. Message to the management...drop the prices bit.

We went for lunch today at this restaurant and it was very, very nice. Decorated extremely nicely and very clean. We had a lovely waiter that was friendly, attentive and went out of their way to explain different dishes and what was vegetarian for my friend. The meat broth and the vegetable broth were SO delicious. Could not stop eating! The portions were very reasonable so I have no idea why previous reviews said small portions at all. We could only eat about half of what we ordered! Very reasonably priced. £60 (including service charge), that also is including our two drinks that we ordered. They were DELICIOUS! Seriously like nothing I have ever had before. Thank you the staff and to the chefs int he kitchen. You are doing great, keep it up.

Went to Chungking Hotpot last night ….. what a great night we had. It was not a meal, it was an experience! Having never been to such a restaurant, the excellent staff were on hand to talk us through the process and help us chose the right ingredients. Everything was so fresh. Food was delicious and tasty. Staff were attentive. The surroundings were lovely. Definitely would go back and will be recommending it to friends!

Too expensive for what you are getting sadly. No card payment only bank transfer is a bit dodgy. The place is very clean and staff are good. Just not quite worth the money … 60 for two people and we didn’t order crazy amounts

The food was nothing outstanding, the beef rolls were the nicest but £12 for 8rolls, they are so thin rolls., Not filling at all. The experience of cooking your own in a bubbling broth is exciting, but once u cook your meat, it shrinks to a fraction of the size leaving a tiny peice that is not filling at all. SO EXPENSIVE!!! also at the end, coming to lay the bill we was told they only take bank transfer or cash!!! So had a problem with this die to not having enough cash!! WHO CARRIES OVER £100 IN CASH!!!! ugh such a pain in the a$$. Anyway, if you are rich and have hundreds to spend on not a filling meal, go for it luv xx

Expensive. Not very filling nice experience. Slightly complicated using the app to order but staff are helpful to guide you through. Drinks are expensive. Food helpings are small and once cooked in the broth they are a fraction of their size. They add a service charge which I didn’t spit until after. I get it with a large gathering but we are a family of 4 and it’s my choice to tip or not; not the restaurant. Given a 3 as we paid £120 for a family or 4 and to be honest still a bit hungry and we are not an overweight overeating family. But disappointed TBH

Amazing food and so many options. However, I didn't like how the waiting staff asked us if we were finished with our plates when I know most places don't do that . We sat on table 5 and it was quite wobbly as well it started to get busy but I understand you can't really do anything about that

In all the 100's of times i have ordered crispy duck i have never had the duck mixed with lettuce. It meant the amount of duck was 1/2 of what you normally get. Very disappointed. If I had wanted a bowl of lettuce i would have asked for one. Sadly wont be going there again and will advise all my friends about it 😞.

Oh what a Chinese this is. If you know Golden City you will already know what an amazing Chinese it is, but if you’ve not come across it before, don’t look any further. I have been coming here for around 13 years and my wife and her family have been coming here for around 30 years. In that time we have never had a bad meal. Honestly everything on the menu is fantastic, I haven’t tried everything but a good handful of dishes and most starters. I strongly recommend the salt and pepper chicken or prawns, chicken in black beans and the sweet and sour chicken. The prices have gone up over the years which is understandable but absolutely worth it for the portion sizes you get and the quality of the food. Thank you Golden City.
