Ego Mediterranean Restaurant & Bar in Staffordshire Moorlands

Disappointing experience in our visit today. Ate at Ego with my partner, my son and his girlfriend. We are local so eat here quite often. My partner ordered Lamb Kleftiko, which is a dish served in a terracotta dish, wrapped in brown paper. It arrived extremely hot, far too hot to eat or do anything with. The food was difficult to eat as it was surrounded by the brown paper. The vegetables were very scarce and we felt it was poor value at £21.95. In hindsight we should have sent the dish back as it wasn't really worth the money. We did complain to two members of staff, one who was pretty indifferent and half heartedly asked if my partner wanted to order something else and again to a gentleman who told us that they have no control over the menu and that it's down to head office who design the menu. We like Ego but will think carefully before visiting again as I value for money isn't what we got today.

Really beautiful food I had the set menu. It was delicious, the carrot & ginger soup was amazing. Service was excellent lovely staff . Nice ambiance just could not fault it .

Lovely venue but don't go if you have any intolerances as they are unable to change any ingredients and cannot swap anything... also on the Sunday lunch menu you have to pay for 2 courses even if you only have 1 course... also note that they add 20% VAT on your food bill so it's not good value for money at all

Had lunch today with friends. Waited an hour for starters (after asking what was happening), then another hour for main course. No one bothered to come and apologise or explain the delay (it wasn’t that busy either!). I had the Festive menu with chicken chasseur as main course. The sauce was tasteless and congealed. Pate starter was very basic in presentation. I thought it was overpriced for what was served.

We arranged to meet as a group of friends for our annual Christmas catch up meal!!! What started off as a lovely evening ended in total disaster!!! We had organised a date to meet, tried to call to book and was met with a constant engaged tone on their phone!! After eventually going in to book a table we were told no deposit was required… fast forward two weeks later we received a phone call confirming we needed to pay a deposit to secure the table!! They sent an email to us to pay but we never received the mail from them… again we went into ego and paid the deposit by card on their link they gave us in the actual restaurant!! All sorted we turned up on a Tuesday evening to a rather quiet restaurant… we were somewhat surprised considering we were only given two hours for the table!! We ordered the meal which to be fair came on time and was actually really nice.. drinks however were less desirable… we ordered a round of drinks which came 1 Diet Coke in a bottle no glass… one 0% gin which I have no idea what they brought me but it was not what I ordered!! A coffee which was borderline freezing!! We then came to pay and what a joke that was… we told the manager we had paid a £50 deposit to be told they had not received this… we then had 20 minutes of stress whilst we tried to locate the card transaction on our banking app!!! As we couldn’t find it and the staff were less than accommodating to help us find it we ended up paying the “missing” deposit with an agreement we would go back if we found the transaction… once home the transaction was found so we then drove all the way back to the restaurant to be met with staff who were rude and unhelpful again!!!! They insisted we emailed the group who own the chain to confirm we had paid and kept us waiting whilst they what could only be described as messed about trying to figure out what to do!!! I mean the staff don’t even know who the chain is owned by for a start so the fact they work for them is baffling!!! Refund was issued but lack of care, poor customer service is unacceptable especially when it comes to people’s money!! We were made to feel like we were not telling the truth and were not even offered an apology!!! To make matters worse we had in fact over paid by a few pounds but because of the hassle we had to go through and the stress and inconvenience we were unwilling to mention this!!!

Sunday lunch - the food was really nice. However, mine had no roasted carrots or parsnips and my daughters was missing the stuffing. We never got asked if the meals were ok during our meal so could not raise this issue. When our plates were cleared we were not asked how our meals were. Sadly the service was very poor waited an hour for our main course and 40 mins for the dessert.

A special occasion -family visit and 12 of us. Felt we were v much in the middle of everything, right by kitchen and bar and being walked around. Had to pre order which was a bit of a pain - it felt like starters were being brought out and we hadn’t even received drinks at this point. Very rushy. Food very expensive for what it is. Chicken and chorizo skewer - served with basic salad and flatbread. So boring. And chorizo was barely cooked. Paellas ok -nothing exciting. Steak was enjoyed. Lamb rump not enjoyed- lots of fat on there and undercooked massively. For the price - not worth the value. Service ok- felt v regimented and rushed.

Arrived 7.00pm, left 9.50 pm having had a starter and main only. Complained but received no apology just feeble excuses- very disappointed with the service!

13-Jul-24: Ego at The Holybush Stockton Bridge. Visited for Saturday lunch as a party of 7. Excellent value for money. Very high quality food, well prepared, and generous portions, especially desserts (the largest Eton mess I've ever had!). Lovely waiting staff too, providing a friendly and professional service. We had a really lovely family gathering and would love to return.

We booked a table on a Friday evening for our family of 4. The restaurant was filling up but we were quickly seated and served, although the server failed to notice only half our table had water glasses, and once the carafe was empty (doesn’t take long with 4 of you), it was never replaced, despite us ordering a number of rounds of drinks inbetween food. The food choices here are always good, and we like the quality. Service is reasonably quick also. I especially like that with dessert you can have a mini dessert - I chose the Eton mess and wasn’t disappointed. It was quite generous for a small size! Aside from the water issue above, one of the cocktails we ordered also wasn’t available, but I know this is a busy location. We like ego as it’s reliable but a bit different to other places - my only minor gripe is that the cubicles in the ladies toilets are really tiny so you have to squeeze in before you can close the door! Maybe something to consider if/when it gets refurbed.

Received a £40 voucher for Father’s Day and looked through the list of restaurants and noticed ego at Stockton brook. Was really looking forward to Sunday lunch there as the description was superb . Went yesterday, 18/08/2024 at 2-45 for lunch and could not have been more disappointed with our main meal. I ordered the prawns as a starter and my partner ordered the goat’s cheese which I must say were absolutely superb. Then we waited a fair while for our mains, mine being the roast beef and my partners was the nut roast. I noticed two meals put under the heat lamps and five minutes later they were delivered to our table. The pink beef that I was supposed to receive was well done and curling up, I tried it and it was so tough it was inedible, the roast potatoes seemed to have leather jackets on them and the red cabbage was cold. I complained and the waitress apologised and took my lunch away. Another one was delivered and the roasties were the same and the meat again was tough. I was asked if I would like anything else but I had gone past it by then. What I can’t understand is why the chefs don’t try the meats beforehand as beef can sometimes give problems. We were still hungry so I had a dessert which was superb and my partner had a hot chocolate which I am afraid to say was only lukewarm.we asked for the bill and the lady knocked £16 off my bill but I am afraid it has put us off visiting again

Good food when it came, however took 1.5 hours to come when the restaurant wasn’t even that busy. Extremely slow service, quite disappointing.

Another great meal again at Ego this time to celebrate our 48th wedding anniversary. Great food and ambience in a packed restaurant where staff and diners had a smile on their faces during our 90 minute stay. Thanks very much see you soon.

Took up the Wednesday offer of £20pp, for 2 courses, which includes a bottle of wine. Sat in the conservatory with our dog. Great value and service.

Took advantage again of this great Wednesday night offer of Dine for Two for £40 incl wine. This was our fourth time as a party of four and on each occasion we have all chosen different starters and mains. And we've never been disappointed, good portions, well prepared and presented by friendly professional staff. Keep the offer going and we'll keep coming back.

Always have a perfect visit when we have our get togethers. Perfect service, food, ambience and of course the cocktails.

Fancying a changing from cooking onboard our narrowboat on the nearby Caldon Canal, we booked to eat at the Hollybush and were pleased that we did. Good food (pork for me, chicken for my wife), pleasant staff and a nice general ambience all contributed to an enjoyable evening, albeit one which worked out a trifle more expensive than we had anticipated. The food and wines are reasonably priced but the sweets and coffees are a bit pricey. Nevertheless, we intend to return when next in the area.

Staff were brilliant, the food was excellent. Lovely and warm in the restaurant on a cool November afternoon, highly recommend.

We went for the £5 lunch deal which was really good value. The food was excellent and the service was good. The place was clean and warm.

Table was booked for 7.30 and wasn’t ready until 7.45 so we had to wait in the bar. We ordered some garlic bread appetisers and the wait for this to arrive was quite long - although drinks had been brought to us. We also waited quite a while for the plates to be cleared and then for the mains to arrive. There were 6 of us and the restaurant was quite busy. We had brought a cake for dessert as it was my birthday and this came out with a lit candle, and the Prosecco came more or less at the same time. Food was lovely, atmosphere great but a little disappointed with the initial waiting -we weren’t eating our mains till almost 9pm. I had visited earlier in the year and given a 5 star glowing review as I couldn’t fault that experience but I’d hope things would be improved a little if I were to visit again

The food is always lovely. We went for steak night on a Tuesday for £10 which is slightly misleading when you get there as there is literally only 1 steak on the menu for £10. Slightly disappointing price of the children’s menu given the portion size. The menu is either for under or over 5’s but there is a big difference between a 5 yr old and a 12 yr old. The children’s pizza is very small compared to other places and the price for 2 courses also at £12.95 is on the high price We tend to only go here when there are offers and deals as the regular menu price I think is too expensive However the food is nice and the staff attentive.

Despite being amazingly busy for a Tuesday evening the service and the food were excellent, as usual!! A lovely, friendly atmosphere. Staff were attentive and friendly, without being intrusive.

food good quality Staff very pleasant, then it's not so good was given 2 vouchers neither of which I was able to use , very confusing, couldn't just have a Sunday roast we had to have the 2 courses , expensive for what we had , waited a while between courses , 2 courses , 2 drinks and 2 coffees cost £55!!! 2 small cofrees £7 And wasn't really worth that amount of money, portions were a little on the small side , just up the road at rhe plough same roast dinner at a carvery at £13.99 each so a big saving to be made . Pity I was looking forward to trying this place out as I've wanted too for a while and the gift of vouchers I thought now was the time , shame really

Booked a table for six people. Two hour time slot. Arrived on time seated then 20 minutes later had to ask to order drinks sat for another 30 minutes so had to ask to order food. I can’t comment on other people’s food but two of us ordered the same dish, it came incomplete and was then so over salted it was hard to eat, spoke to staff who said sorry will mention to the chef but no reply. Ordered pudding with drinks and they came with rotting fruit, green mold in them told staff, they were obviously embarrassed but as I commented as I left our bill was nearly £260 we don’t eat out often and expected so much more. Won’t eat there again

Overall it was very good. For me I would of liked the veggie to be cooked a little more on my lamb kebab and a bit more sauce to go with it. I would go back again and try something different.

I have visited Ego 3 times in the past 3 weeks and have found myself slightly disappointed. Our first meal was a Sunday dinner which was okay but nothing special. The second was a girls night. They goats cheese starter was amazing but the paella was a let down, it lacked flavour and felt very oily. The third was my anniversary. Again I had the goats cheese and my partner had the chorizo so we split both between us. The chorizo seemed very bitty compared to the large slices I got last time I had it. I then had the chicken milenase which was extremely oily and I couldn’t eat it. I was very jealous of my partners hanging kebab which he enjoyed. Whilst we were there on 2 occasions, other diners also had issues so I didn’t feel alone. Maybe the menu should be reviewed or stop using so much oil. The atmosphere is always pleasant when I’ve been and the staff helpful. We will give Ego a break for a while and hopefully return to like it again

Nice pub with good grub! They have special discount nights eg steak night. We had a 20% reduction sent by email and Sunday they do a 2 course meal at a good price for the standered of cooking.

Food was poor on the evening, chicken supreme dry not enough sauce and chicken and chorizo paella had no chicken in it and was sent back, on hindsight should have sent chicken supreme back as well.
