I have visited the tea rooms on numerous occasions, staff are very friendly and helpful and the food is always very fresh . However prices have increased steadily over the last few years and portion sizes reduced . The menu has not changed in years and a few specials would be great.

Afternoon tea. Worst ever.....upon entering the building the smell of dampness hits you..{yes it is an old building} Sat in a filthy old conservatory where extra dampness was served for free! The portions served were terrible £15.00 for 2 doorstop wedges of cake,2 scones,6 small sandwiches plus tea. Waiting time was horrendous and one member received his meal after 2 attempts to inform the staff we were still waiting. £9.00 for 2 slices of bread with prawn mayonnaise and a sprinkling of crisps and salad, ordered chips on the side which arrived after sandwich was eaten.. Do your self a favour and pay a bit extra and go to Wynyard hall..

My daughter & I visited here after a recommendation & we were so looking forward to it. We tried to get the attention of a member of staff as we weren’t sure whether we had to wait to be seated. After failing to do this we chose our own table & sat down anyway. We choose a panini to share with a side order of chips, a hot fudge cake to share & two drinks. The drinks were served fairly quickly so we started on them while waiting for the food to arrive. We waited & waited & waited but no food. After 45 minutes I went to look for a staff member to ask where our food was but another 10 minutes passed & still no food! In the end we decided to leave as we had lost our enthusiasm to eat there by this point. I approached the counter & asked to pay for the drinks & cancel the food order. I explained that practically an hour’s wait for a panini & piece of cake was frankly ridiculous. She claimed that it was just being made at that point & did we want a take out. She was polite but not even an apology because they had obviously forgotten our order. Such a shame as we never expected to wait that long, in fact I’ve never waited so long for cooked to order restaurant food. I know there was a mistake on their part but could never give a good review after that. We went to the pub in Hartburn village instead & were served much quicker.

I would thoroughly recommend The Elmwood tea room. We recently had a family gathering there (approx 30 people) and the service was exceptional. David and his colleagues were extremely helpful and catered for our every need. We also hired a room next door to the charming tearoom, which was a useful option, so our family and friends could socialise. The quality of the cream teas were fantastic, the cakes and scones were particularly delicious and the portions were very generous. Not to mention the bottomless cups of Ringtons tea. If you are considering holding a small event, or even fancy a cream tea, or a lovely lunch, please consider Elmwood, you will be glad you did!

Whilst I have no doubt that this tea room is a favourite with many of the people who have reviewed this place, I am afraid that our first visit was one of disappointment. Having read the reviews I rang before travelling to it. I was told we are busy but will be able to accommodate you. On arrival we were shown to a table but afternoon time waiting I got up and asked if I was to order at the counter. No we will come to you. Having placed an order for 2 sandwiches and tea, coffee we looked forward to them. The drinks arrived jn reasonable time but approximately 45-50 minutes for the food. Having being told they will t be long the drinks were gone well before the food. To be fair we were given our drinks again free of charge. Whilst waiting we were told they were short on staff. We'll that's understandable. However, when I rang as stated, I was told we are busy. If I may suggest that knowing they were so busy, perhaps we could have been told the waiting time will be approx 45-50 minutes. Or when we arrived rather than showing us to a table again we could have been advised of the extra waiting time and even better a notice could have been put on the entrance door. The sandwiches and drinks were fine and our waitress was apologetic and polite. I hope my review is taken as constructive criticism.

Came here with a client for a social call and the staff were absolutely fantastic from start to finish. We opted for the afternoon tea I mean how can you not for £10pp unlimited tea or coffee and two cakes and two massive scones with cream and that’s before you decide what choice of sandwiches you would like. The staff also stated they had disabled access and two wheelchairs so you don’t have to struggle. Honestly you can not be disappointed in anyway. We opted to sit in the quirky conservatory and the client I had with me was 92 and really appreciated the fine china and old memorabilia displayed. Thank you so much for a lovely afternoon. I’d been to this place on two prior occasions and planned to go again on my Birthday. I almost didn’t as I’d been warned about very long wait times for simple snacks, even when there weren’t many in. My friend accidentally ordered a cream tea instead of afternoon tea, but the waitress was corrected after she brought us cakes without sandwiches. After another hour and 20 minutes, and three chase-ups with the waitress, it had become obvious that even those who arrived after us had been served. I went to speak with the ‘team leader’ and tried to make light of it, telling him it was my Birthday and are the sandwiches coming? He told me “yes, but you did ask for a cream tea first” (no apology, no Happy Birthday lol), I explained that that had been rectified with the waitress very quickly but since then other customers had been and gone. His response to this was “By the same token, you have already had something!” I gotta say, I was totally gobsmacked, so he expected us to have our now dried out cakes before the sandwiches? We left. Oh and the coffee was fowl anyway. Happy Birthday me.

I recently visited with my neice for afternoon tea as I had been previously and had a nice lunch there. Afternoon tea did not disappoint, everything was extremely fresh and we were asked what sandwiches and cakes we would prefer, I've never been asked this before and sometimes ended up with things I wasn't too keen on eating. The cosy atmosphere like an olde world sitting room and lovely staff, all added to the experience, we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done Elmwood we will definitely return.

Recently visited the tea room with my husband and daughter, luckily we were not in a hurry. We only ordered sandwiches and panini and there were only another six people in the tea room however it was 45 minutes from when we arrived until we received our food and we had booked a table.I can not fault the waitress who was very apologetic but couldn’t help thinking she should have tried to help out in the kitchen . I think there was only one man in the kitchen undertaking the orders and he obviously had problems multi tasking.the food was nice although I think the coke was from a big bottle and was pricey.I visit the tea rooms regularly and will continue to do so, however the service does need to be quicker which may involve additional staff in the kitchen or more preparation.

We visited on our way to our holiday lodge and were so delighted that we booked for a lunch on the way back. Our server was a great joker and amused our party of six. You could not get a better home-made Brocolli and Stilton soup, if you tried, served with, either half a baguette or a warm scone. How great is that? Everyone enthused about their large sandwiches so I would say both meals were a great success. My sister had left her scarf on our first visit and there it was waiting for her ,unlike mine that were never handed in at other establishments.Well done Elmwood tea rooms.

My wife asked me to meet her here for lunch and I asked her to confirm the location a as the last time I had been here some twenty years ago was to drop my Son off at the nursery in the same building. Our excellent waiter informed us that as well as the restaurant the building itself, which was formerly owned by the council is also home to several other groups (Motoring/Yoga/child care). The dining area is set in resplendent room almost like something from a theatre set, Big bow sash windows/fireplace and a grandfather clock. As one of your other reviewers previously remarked the room itself looked like it came straight from an Agatha Christie novel. Murder victims aside the food was to die for (excuse the pun). Our waiter ever attentive told us at point of ordering that the food would take around fifteen minutes or so to be served as it was all prepared freshly in their kitchen.Talk about well worth waiting for I had the best Tuna Melt ever and I am a connoisseur of this particular toastie washed down with Ringtons tea. What could be better.I was really surprised how busy The Elmwood is and it is obviously frequented by 'people in the Know' As we are now 'people in the know' it would be a pity to recommend this to our friends in case we cannot get a seat next time we visit.Seriously we will be back here again soon and will bring our friends.

Great baguettes, sandwiches , jacket potatoes etc.although the quiche portions are meagre. Cream Scones and cakes are great to. Fresh each day. The friendly host struggles to keep all his lady customers happy. He could do with a helper. Tea is served in old fashioned cups, saucers with steaming tea pots. They have a great choice of lunch snacks, and freshly baked scones and cakes served with a choice of drinks including lovely coffee. The owners are really helpful and friendly. We will definitely be returning.

Lovely little war time themed cafe. Fantastic atmosphere and great staff. Food is delicious, everything freshly made. Would highly recommend, especially for history buffs. Second time this week for us. I’d suggest you get there early as they sell out fast on most items.

Lovely little pub. My favourite pub on the green. Nice craft ales and the owners are down to earth and approachable.
