Fantastic food and service. Netty was perfectly warm and welcoming, service was quick, and pricing was reasonable

A very nice visit for a chippy lunch. The haddock was perfect. Firm, crispy batter and very tasty. Homemade mushy peas were the best I've tasted, ever. This was followed by a lovely sticky toffee pud. Most importantly, we were served by the amazing Netty, who was friendly, welcoming and couldn't do more to make us feel looked after. Thank you Netty.

Really good service, Netty looked after us, gave some good recommends, polite, nice. Food was lovely, good portions (fishbites), really nice place to sit in.

My husband and i called in today for a fish and chip lunch which we really enjoyed, it's lovely little fish and chip restaurant with lovely friendly staff we would like to thank Netty and Maddy for their lovely friendly Service we will be back to visit again soon Thankyou.

Great haddock and chips, it has set the standard for me now and few live up to it. The service is always good, staff friendly and helpful. We have only had takeaway but the cafe looks very nice too.

We have been going to 149 in Barnard Castle for a few years, as the fish and chips there far surpassed any others we had tried, including Whitby. However, the last few times that we have eaten there, they have been nowhere near as good, but we thought that we would go back today and give them another chance. Sadly, once again, they were not up to scratch, which was very disappointing. The batter on the fish was pale, flat and not crispy. The chips were awful. Lots of them were crispy like crisps and the rest of them were extremely dry and tastless. I don't know whether it's to do with the quality of the potatoes they are using but they never used to be like that. Looks like we will have to find somewhere else now. Such a shame.

Visited Friday teatime ordered large cod and large chips to take home.Couldn’t believe how bad the food was!!! I had to go without and throw them in the bin. The cod was thick in burnt batter and there was literally no cod to find, You would get more fish in a fish finger!! Considering I paid for large chips the portion was stingy, and they were dry , quite hard and cold. This is our local Fish and chip shop but I’m sorry to say we won’t be returning as I can’t afford to throw £11.40 in the bin! I don’t normally like to complain but on this occasion sorry to say I’ve been robbed!

Friendly staff. Quite literally the best fish n chips I've had in the last few years, and i often go to the seaside for it. Fish is cooked to order but every fish shop should be doing this so expect a slight wait. Definitely the bestest fish n chips in the bishop auckland and Barnard castle area.

Made the mistake of going at 3pm, obviously the chips we were served had been sat for some time and were most unpleasant. Nvm. At least the soft drink was cold.

Visted 17/11/24, was nothing wrong with the Haddock, but the chips were like rocks so had to leave most of them, seems like they had been left in the fryer far too long

The last 2 times I've been the regular cod has been very small which is disappointing. Will be going elsewhere from now on.

Bought a portion of fish strips that were nearly £6. There was 8 pieces of what I can only describe as scraps. I think the fryer must have forgotten to put the fish in. Un fortunately we had taken them home before opening so was impractical to return them. Chips were OK but cold

Had wonderful meal at 149 in Barnard Castle today. The batter was lovely and crispy, the fish was delicious, chips perfect and the nicest mushy peas I've ever had. Lovely staff as well. Will definitely go back, and recommend it to my friends.

Thought I would give the chippy a try as I was in the area, had fish and chips and they were delicious and can highly recommend on my visit you won’t be disappointed.

Service awful, tables full of empty plates. Kitchen area terrible old mop heads in corner chef clothes had seen better days and the toilets had not been cleaned for a while !

Ordered large fish and chips. Chips were ok but nothing special. Fish was medium in size at best. Disappointed given the reviews and reputation locally. Won't be back.

We called here for our tea on Sunday on our way to visit my son, the place was extremely busy around five pm we ate in and got served fairly quick. I had large cod n chips with mushy peas my wife had the seniors special we both really enjoyed it as we always do.

Just been for fish and chips, absolutely terrible, I can’t even put it down to it just being a bad one off as this was my 2nd visit in the last month, and my 1st lot of fish and chips was as bad as tonight’s I just thought I’d give it another go. I generally would never complain and if I know how yo upload a photo to show you I would as seeing it would say it all !

My third visit and each time, it just gets better. Superb fish and wonderful chips all served with a huge smile.

I brought my 2 grandsons for a meal. I am Coeliac and my eldest grandson is gluten intolerant. Not only was the GF meal here absolutely delicious but it was such a delight to find a place locally where our dietary needs were absolutely no problem whatsoever. The GF frier is completely separate, the staff are really aware and unlike so many places not only did I feel completely safe but for once (rarely) I also felt completely comfortable. The gluten free batter was deliciously crisp, the fish moist and the chips (with GF vinegar - I know - this place is off the chart!) were lush. This was the first of what I’m sure will be many visits. Oh - and did I say - it’s not just some times or some days - this place caters (superbly) for those who need or want GF - all the time - at NO EXTRA COST. Seriously if I could give it 10 stars I would. Thank you 149 for the best fish and chips I’ve had in literally years.

We live in the town and go to 149 regularly and rate it the best Fish & Chippie anywhere . Superb.

Service was a bit slow but usually very good. Food is excellent

My fish bites were really overdone. The actual piece of fish my partner got was fine.

The haddock, chips and onion rings were lovely, didn't take too long for the food to arrive, despite the takeaway being really busy. My husband had cod, chips and mushy peas, he said they were the best mushy peas he had ever tasted. We also had coffee, we were expecting a mug each but we got a pot of coffee and a pot of hot water. Also loved the little alcoves for sauce, vinegar etc. Our meal came to just over £30 with no pudding but would definitely go back if we were in the area.

I have never in my life had fish and chips so bad. The fish was chewy rubber (most likely reheated) and the chips were rocks. I left during meal because of how bad it was. Beats me how this place has good reviews... Service was average.

We haven't been here for at least 3 years but decided to come this evening on the way back from a day trip to the lakes. I had a regular haddock and chips. The quality of the fish and batter were outstanding and the chips were cooked to perfection. One of the best fish and chips I have had.

Went in today, sad to see prices have risen, put me right off. £2.50 a can of coke is steep. I took my business round the corner to Barnard Castle Fisheries

Five years ago the fish and chips here were some of the best that we've had. A year ago we returned and they were average. Called again yesterday and the cod was virtually tasteless, chips pale and tough. We'll be trying elsewhere next time in Barnard Castle.

Poor service,paid for food, then stood waiting for 20 mins while 1 person was fulfilling other orders . Wouldn’t it be easier to serve the customers as they paying?????

Ordered 3 large cod on line, got home to find the smallest of fish in all 3 boxes. Tried to contact them on their online form, got no reply. Appalling size. Will stick with Plumer Road, Catterick in future. Edit. Now got reply from 149 on back of this review, they ask for a screen shot, no facility to attach anything to their complaint form, they don't even know how their system works. Maybe provide an email address or other way to make contact with attachment facility. Absolutely appalling just like their fish.

Hidden little gem, well worth a visit. Fantastic fish & chips. Small eat in area with about 8 tables or takeaway. I will definitely be calling there again next time I'm in the area.

Visited Barnard Castle with a few friends and popped in for a takeaway. Got the golden years special which was great value for money. Small fish,chips and mushy peas. Very tasty and just the right amount for us oldies. Served quickly but it would have been nice for our female server to crack a smile and be a bit more friendly. Otherwise perfect.

Really good fish and chips, served very quickly, all skinned and boneless which is a huge plus (down south where I'm from fish usually isn't skinned which makes it not nearly as nice). In a good location near the car park and fairly central in the town.

Every time we come to Barnard Castle we use this fish and chip shop. We are always delighted with the level of service and the quality of food.

Don’t live in the area but was looking for a place just to grab a small portion of chips for lunch and chose here due to the mostly good reviews. Walked in and ordered as normal, was then asked by the young lad working if i wanted salt and vinegar to which I replied yes please. He then left them open on the side when he went to get the curry sauce I ordered too. When coming back to the counter he said ‘just put it on yourself’. I was left rather dumbfounded as why ask me in the first place if i want it putting on to then just leave them open on the side as though I was supposed to automatically know to put it on? Then after tasting the chips once getting back to our accommodation they literally tasted like pure dirt and mud not sure if it was a bad batch of potatoes or that’s just the norm, either way they had to go in the bin as the taste just overpowered them. Such a shame don’t be fooled by the google reviews.

I’ll not beat about the bush, this place isn’t cheap, that’s down to the high costs in the best produce they used , the quality is 2nd too none, would recommend 100% beautiful fish and chips

Have to be honest, I think the fish at Barnard Castle Fisheries (Katie's) is better. came here on a suggestion as that was closed on the day I went. Was not as convinced. Maybe I got a not so good piece. Staff made a mistake in the service, but still overall were really friendly.

We are holidaying in the area and heard many recommendations to visit the Barnard Castle branch, so it had to be done! I was celebrating my 40th birthday yesterday and a chippy tea was a must! We ordered online for collection and when we arrived at the shop, the staff were awesome despite being rushed off their feet!! Eve, Jake and Dan were a well oiled machine at front of house and Ben was doing the hot work frying! Top quality food and service with added banter to match! Staff are a credit to the company! It’s a long trip from York but if we visit again we’ll definitely be paying another visit. Thanks for a cracking birthday tea!!

Great gluten free fish and chips with onion rings. We had the large because generally portions are getting smaller. Here the large was very large but I was up to the challenge and finished it all!! My husband and partner can eat gluten and we all enjoyed our meals. The four plates just fit on the table. I also had a pit of tea which was nice and strong, it even came with a pot if water. In summary we will be returning when we are in the area. The park isn't far away if the weather is good and you want to takeaway.

Fish and chips are cooked to perfection. Never greasy. Cafe very clean. Fast and efficient service from pleasant staff. Visit to Barnard Castle not complete without fish and chips from 149.

Chips were tasty and good portion size, however, whilst the haddock was slightly overcooked, the cod on the other hand was so over it was mostly inedible and if you hadn't been so busy I would have returned it.

We have been meaning to come back here since we visited last year. Best chip shop around. Friendly staff and the food is always perfectly cooked. Options to eat in or take out. You can order ahead via the app and collect when is convenient for you. Plenty of free parking on the street too. We will definitely be back.

We had the best fish and chips we've had in years. We ordered the pensioners special,which included mushy, peas, tea (or coffee), bread and butter and condiments, including a slice of lemon with the best batter I have ever had The service was excellent, the young man who served us was polite and helpful, with a really pleasant manner. The meal was delightful, I had haddock and chips, my husband chose cod and chips(both with the best batter I have ever had "magnifico!!) The restaurant busy but the service was swift and the food was piping hot and very appetising. We will certainly go back the next time we go to Barnard Castle!! (Also meant to add the price was good too, £10.69 per person for a lovely dinner with great service!!)
