Giggling Squid Bury St Edmunds in St Edmundsbury

We enjoyed dinner at the Giggling Squid in Salisbury a few years ago so it was only natural to try the one at Bury when we were visiting. A very comprehensive menu, great service and delicious food. 10/10.

5/5 stars! This restaurant exceeded my expectations in every way. The food was outstanding, the service was top-notch, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The chicken pad thai was cooked to perfection, and the flavors were incredibly rich and savory. Also, the complimentary chips with sweet and sour sauce - a delicious and thoughtful starter. The service was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. Our server took the time to answer all our questions and made excellent recommendations. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a fantastic dining experience. We can't wait to come back.

We'd been wanting to visit for a long time, but unfortunately it wasn't the experience we hoped for. The service was shocking, from the moment we walked in (it was rather empty), we were addressed like we were an inconvenience, little interaction. Most of the waiting staff who served us (aside from the lady with the purple shirt on) all felt like they didn't want to be there. We even noticed the same on other tables, two ladies beside us had dips delivered to their table, out of the blue, no explanation. They had to call someone over and ask, to then be told they should have been brought with their starters. The atmosphere amongst all the staff made it feel uncomfortable for us. The food was great, but all we could talk about was the awful service and atmosphere. We were then shocked to see that a service charge was already added to the bill (this wasnt mentioned on the menu or anywhere else, not that we saw!! We paid it, but did inform the waitress (a different one now) of the shocking service. I wonder if this was passed on?!

Beautiful food, a little cold at the back where we were seated but as it filled up the temperature naturally rose. Lovely friendly staff, very clean and stylish decor. The roti was a must for a dipping side!

I was very excited to eat at this place! The food specifically was gorgeous. Our night started amazing with a very tasty starter - a mix of different foods, all thoroughly enjoyed. However, our mains took more than an hour to arrive, unfortunately affecting our experience at the restaurant. Once it had finally arrived, the food was quite tasty! Pad Thai was lovely, and duck was really good and not dry.

Amazing customer service! 🌟 Unfortunately, we weren't able to eat where we had booked so I asked whether there was a chance we could get a last minute table, James and Anna were wonderful and managed to get us in. The staff were attentive all night and we didn't feel rushed at all. Thank you for saving the day! 👍🏼

We had a lovely waitress called Courtney! Cannot fault the team we felt very well looked after! The food was also amazing!

Greeted by someone who obviously wasn’t happy in her job. Served by a really sweet girl who had no idea about the menu. Food very average, tiny pieces of overcooked hake on a few scraps of cabbage . All very expensive for not great food. Typical chain restaurant. Another chain restaurant I shall avoid. When will I learn, go to an independent .

First time my wife and I have been to this restaurant in Bury St Edmunds, we were well looked after by Natalia. We had a selection of tapas, everything we ordered was wonderfully tasty, really liked the lamb curry, crispy fried beef and honey duck. Would definitely recommend.

A perfect dining spot for those looking to enjoy an authentic and warm Thai dining experience. Recently visited with my honey and the cozy ambiance combined with attentive service made it an evening to remember. Each dish was beautifully presented, with fresh ingredients that burst with flavour. highly recommend papaya salad, that’s amazing 😻 What made the evening special was the little details: the perfect pacing of the meal, and the gentle, romantic background music that let us share laughs and conversation without feeling rushed.

Easy to book at short notice. We had sharing street food platter to start, followed by giant king prawn pad thai. Food was served hot and meal was entirely delicious! Staff were attentive and extremely polite, kindly helped when we upset our drinks!! Quote from my Grandad - “that was worth every penny”!

Delicious food, great service and a lovely atmosphere. Went here for our 21st Anniversary meal. As we walked through the restaurant, there was a large party celebtating a 21st birthday. We pointed out the significance to each other and the lady showing us to our table. At the end of the meal, they brought out a plate with a couple of mini desserts, with Happy Anniversary written on the plate. It was such a lovely and unexpected gesture, we were really touched. Will definitely return!

We went on a Sunday around 4pm, which meant we could use the lunch menu. We had the tapas and friends had the meal plate deal. I thought the food was very good and the lamb curry was top draw. My only issue was the automatic service charge which was nearly £9. Hence the 4 stars

My food (massaman) was lovely however my girlfriend got food poisoning that night and was very ill from we suspect the prawns. Have never had an issue before though.

No, no, no, no, no. Chose from the lunch menu. The curry was pretty much a flavoured vegetable stew the prawn a very small one cut in half and the jasmine rice was simply boiled white rice that had never seen jasmine in its life. Staff didn't seem bothered and even tried to clear the table while we were still eating. In summary, very poor food, poor service and over priced, the very opposite of what a meal should be.

We visited on our Wedding Anniversary before a Theatre visit. I was very impressed with their knowledge of allergies as I am GF and DF, it’s not always easy for me to choose from a menu but it was exceptionally easy for which I was grateful. Not the cheapest meal but the food and service was worth every penny. Thank you and we will be back.

Incredible atmosphere and great food!

This is a long over due review. I would have loved to give this review a 5 star but in the 28th of September we had made a booking for dinner, the manager didn’t greet us for around 15 minutes we told her we had a reservation and then she had proceeded to disappear for a further 5 not informing us of what happened. The food was not bad but not good. The only thing that made us somewhat pleased was the waiting staff and their speed and efficiency. Our Waiter (Dominic) was very kind and friendly and helped me and my husband navigate the menu ( as I had forgot my glasses at home) the only reason why the service wasn’t 5 star was because of the manager.

A wonderful way to taste Thai food and do it in a pretty and unusually decorative surroundings. Excellent service but the food can be of a slightly higher quality to make this place even more desirable.

Enjoyed a Birthday Lunch out at the Giggling Squid in Bury ST Edmunds and it didn't disappoint! Fabulous food, attentive service and great value.

This was a truly fantastic gastro experience from walking in to the restaurant the bright and funky decor was taken out for birthday lunch by mother-in-law who had discovered the "Giggling Squid" a few months ago. They have a fantastic dietary app using your smartphone and QR code system once you know how to use it could have done with a littke more instructions. myself been gluten free. The service by the well turned out staff was amazing frendly and helpful giving us a little tweak with the of the dietary app we all had the lunch time tapas options with a drink. I personally had Feasting Set. Chicken Green Curry, Chicken Satay, Mixed Vegetable Stir Fry, Jasmine Rice. And a regular coke a cola. It came out beautifully displayed on a stunning 4 way devided plate to separate the dishes, The Chicken Green Curry, was fantastic the flavor and texture where delicious, the Jasmine Rice was perfectly cooked light and fluffy i enjoyed spooning the rice in to the curry bowl and in to the Mixed Vegetable Stir Fry, soaking up all the fantastic flavorsome broths. polished off with the succulent Chicken Satay on a bed of Satay sauce the whole experience was truly fantastic would honestly tell anyone to try out this lunch time treat and all for a truly amazing pocket frendly price 4 of us had a lovely lunch time treat of drink and tummy filling food for under £80 in this economic market this is amazing I was stuffed and left feeling happy as where all our party will definitely be back for more it would be rude not to be thanks guys.

Myself and my partner are very fond and regular customers at the giggling squid, every time we visit, we are greeted with a lovely professional manner my the manger Joe and his waiting staff. We both went for lunch and my partner enjoyed the selection from the tapas menu and went for the crispy chicken, squid and beef and I had from the main menu there gorgeous and delicious dish pan Thai. The food is always lovely presented, hot and spectacular we both highly recommend. And our server Don was very experienced with the menu and wine list. The atmosphere is lovely, decor and definitely lives up to its expectations with the food. Will we be seeing you soon! Lyndsey and Jason

We regularly eat at the Giggling Squid and thoroughly enjoy it excellent quality of food great value and exceptionally helpful knowledgeable and friendly staff . Our last visit on 30 August was unbelievable. The food was even better than normally if that is possible. Whatever you have on the menu be sure flavours will explode in your mouth. Back again soon!!

Edit: 11 Aug 24. What the heck happened to this place. Oh my god… I had the worst Penang curry I’ve ever had in my life. It didn’t even taste like a Thai food. They used to be so good. But now their prices are way up but their food quality has gone down so much! I’m genuinely curious as to what happened to this place. Giggling squid is lucky that they are the only Thai option in town. Even then, I would rather not had Thai and get something else for better price and quality.

A long overdue review. Went here a couple of months ago. It is a great place to eat delicious food. The food was so delicious that it gave me memories of this restaurant and had to finally write a review. If I am ever in the area, I would definitely come back here again.

Food is really bad here, the Thai green curry sauce has a powdery texture and was very bland. The satay chicken was really dry, almost like it had been reheated in a microwave. The vegetable stir fry was carrots, bean shoots and cabbage in oily brown sauce. The people working in there are nice but the food is a big let down.

Me and my wife had a rare child free afternoon and were in the area so decided to pop into the Giggling Squid, we were welcomed in by lovely staff members. The decor was great! We had the ‘street food starter for two’ which was very tasty, followed by the butterfly king prawn pad Thai which was excellent. We both had all the mock tails on the menu, which were well made and tasted great. Overall, great experience and will definitely return!

Not a single smile from staff, ordered some food but wrongly delivered dishes. Even when food was right they still didn't know which dish is what. I was given some mushrooms instead of seafood but it was called "spicy seafood" by a waitress. Nobody ordered any "spicy seafood' but it was the only meal with a word seafood in it's name so I took it to find out that's something wrong with it. Lucky us manager spotted what is going on and took control over the chaos. I got what I have ordered but six mussels on a plate and two already empty, all cold. Rest of it was extremely salty and more breadcrumbs than anything else. It could be a piece of wood and it wouldn't make any difference to taste. Coconut rice but not cooked in coconut milk, just some milk on top. Very small tables, not enough space for a bigger group of people, like 5 people crowded around 3 people table. £20 of service charge was like a final penalty. When we almost finished we have been asked like 10 times "Did you finish ? Did you finish ?" clearly giving us signs go away and empty the tables for next customers coming. At the end a waitress just put a bill on our table saying nothing. Very rude. Lucky us that we didn't order any deserts because we would need to take away :-). We were not told that there is a limit of time we can spend there. But I never was in a situation when you limited on time in a restaurant and you are not told about it. How you can enjoy your time ? The first and last visit. Wasted time. Not a single person from a group of 10 people really enjoyed it. One of my friends ordered two dishes after she found that the first meal is below her standards and the second one wasn't any better so she had to leave the place hungry.

Very friendly staff and lovely Thai food. We went for the lunch time tapas menu so we could try various items, all great.

The atmosphere is appalling, loud music everywhere that l can’t even hear myself. Food overpriced and overrated, not quite authentic with not enough Thai herbs. On the top of this, service price is also included with no warning before paying. l stopped going there because l have peanut allergy and most Thai food contain peanuts and though they say that l have food without peanut but l don’t want the risk of peanut exposures.

Absolutely nothing bad to say about the atmosphere or the service, it is a very nice and pleasant restaurant with a very lovely and dedicated staff. Very nice cocktails too. I was just disappointed with the food which I found tasteless and overpriced. I might be used to tastier more flavoured Thai food, I don’t know but I felt ripped off for some very non tasty food. It was a little bit of a shame as I was recommended this place by people.

The children took me out for Father's Day. I had a wonderful time there, and the staff was very friendly and attentive. The service was excellent.

The food was good. However, I came here to celebrate my friends birthday.. They were handed a dessert which they did not ask for, and were then charged for it. This should not be allowed.. if it’s their birthday and they were ‘given’ a dessert, it should definitely have not been added to the bill. Especially when they didn’t ask for it. It put a damper on their birthday. Also there was an extra gratuity charge added to the bill. Not impressed!

I enjoyed the meal and the service was excellent, but disappointed to spot that the default service charge added to the bill was only 8%. That's the lowest I've ever seen and it's really inadequate. 10% should be the absolute minimum, and 12.5% is the going rate these days. Value your staff more.

Service much better than another Giggling Squid that we have visited. More like their normal service. Food very good.

Nice decor and good service, but food underwhelming and tiny portions. The pad Thai was bland, the crispy squid was mostly batter with no squid and didn't taste of much. The duck and the pork cheek were decent, but quite small portions. Rice is not included with the main dish, and quite overpriced for the tiny bowl you get. Ours was overcooked and tasted as if warmed up.

George at the Giggling Squid Bury St Edmunds delivered commendable customer service. Despite our large group and the bustling atmosphere due to it being a bank holiday weekend, the food arrived quicker than anticipated. George ensured we were well taken care of throughout. And of course, the food was fantastic as usual. Thank you.

Lovely food but shame soft drinks are so expensive.

We visited for an evening meal and the service was fine though they were busy. It’s a long narrow restaurant at the front so you feel that you are sat in a busy passageway at times. The tables are close together and if you’ve got loud neighbours like we had then conversation is tough. We thought it was expensive for what it was to be honest and we didn’t have an alcoholic drink so 2 starters and 2 mains cost over £70 by the time you factor in the discretionary service charge. Nice food but didn’t really do it for us I’m afraid.

I came here for a family meal. The staff are very friendly and the food was great. There were some nice vegetarian options. Be cautious of the hole peppercorns in some of the dishes, though, as you will get a nasty surprise if any are hidden in your mouthful of food . The food was amazing, though and other than that I can't fault it.

Wow, just discovered The Giggling Squid and so I glad I did. I still have most of the menu to sample but what I have had so far has been exceptionally good.

Great place, delicious food but after 1hr and 45 mins and we'd only had our starters. Was a real shame as not everyone at the table ordered a starter so they were absolutely starving by the time the food arrived. Good is amazing though.

The squid kept on giggling and never disappoint. We don’t live near one but when on holiday and if there’s one, we will always eat there. Love the king prawn pad Thai. Just wish I have a bigger stomach so I can eat more dishes 😂

Gave me and my friend food poisoning, took a month to investigate it then said they did nothing wrong and refused to give us a full refund, offered us a voucher instead. We're obviously not going back to the place that gave us food poisoning then came up with a rubbish report saying it wasn't them.

My friend and I got food poisoning from them, we complained and asked for a refund but after a month long investigation, they denied they did anything wrong and offered us a voucher instead. Will not be returning. Bad food hygiene and awful customer service.

Great menu and so many tasty dishes.

Food was very disappointing, didn't live up to the memnu description at all. My brother ordered the same meal as me and his arrived cold. They replaced and didnt charge, fair enough, but the quality of the food would prevent me returning again.
