Green Inn Ballater in Mendip

The food was fine however I won't be returning. The drinks are an absolute rip off. £4 for a kids apple juice, £4 for a very small soft drink. Not even a pint or half pint but a tiny glass. See photo. Eaten all over deeside and nobody has charged £4 for a tiny glass of juice. Wine was £10 but that was to be expected. Don't like being ripped off so won't return

It was a mixed experience when we visited. The food was really good, if a bit small on the portion relative to price. However, the owner realty needs to work with the staff to improve the customer experience, no hello, no smiles, not really interested, no ‘the soup of the day is’, one waitress had a long wooly sweater on which went past her knuckles whilst serving food ? We asked for extra hot coffee which came luke warm. Im afraid they had no idea of how to be attentive. The place is nice, the food is good but the staff do really need to be trained to Realize how important their part is in running a successful resturant. Ps this was our second visit, the 1st time the staff were completely disorganized and stood around chatting for most of the time.

We booked for dinner having looked at the menu but did not anticipate such authentic Italian food. Brucetta with a different topping, gnocchi with a excellent an pumpkin, marscapone mixture, topped with pinenuts, a risotto so fresh with mint and peas, desserts, coffee and good Italian wines all at a very reasonable cost. Seemed to be quite busy for a Tuesday. Not surprised. Don’t be put off by the frontage, the interior is modern and relaxed.

We had an excellent meal at The Green Inn and contrary to other opinions felt that the portion size was just right. It’s a good menu, sensibly priced and the staff are smiley and helpful. We’ll go again.

We had the slow cooked lamb and it was delicious. We had not seen lamb on many menus in Scotland so it was a pleasant surprise. The staff were very efficient and very welcoming. I would recommend the Green Inn if you are passing through or staying in the lovely village of Ballater

Ate here in May. Pretty disappointing. Portion sizes are tiny. The bruschetta was very small, the trout and avocado was very salty. The seafood stew main course had a small piece of fish, 3 mussels and 4 clams. Served with a small piece of sourdough. It was a starter size and definitely not a stew. The wine is overpriced. The pizzas were good and the prawn Pil Pil excellent. Staff lovely but won’t be hurrying back.

We had a lovely dinner, booked at very short notice. Lovely welcome. Very good service. Food presented beautifully. Flavours very good to excellent (10/10 for Sea Bass; 8/10 for Posh Mac n Cheese). Portions perfectly adequate. Price competitive. Atmosphere a little formal for our tastes but overall felt like a fine dining experience. Thank you very much.

As others have said the portions are small. Had the beef cauliflower risotto. Beef quantity was fine, risotto elements very small. Cost wise, not much to give 50% more and 2 more pieces of broccoli. It was excellent, just not enough of the risotto element. Tiramisu was average and would not order again. Cannoli was terrible. 2 pieces. Shell was soft, filling, words fail me. Husband ate one, but he will eat anything. I had one bit, left the rest. Even he said, not sure why I ate that, it was horrible, but he he is a Labrador!

We had a nice meal here with friends, the staff were very pleasant and helpful. It was quiet so it lacked a bit in atmosphere.

The food tasted nice but there was hardly any of it. I ordered sea bass £18- considering it only comes with sauce, I would expect to get the whole sea bass rather than 2 tiny bites worth. Paid an extra £5 for vegetables. We also had a pizza which was very small for price.

Lovely, and very genuinely feeling Italian food. 3 smoked trout and 1 ham and peach starter, 2 cods, 1 duck and 1 tagliatelle main. All flavourful and excellently presented. Nice wine choices. Portions not large, and maybe for those with larger appetites order some sides. Service great. Recommended!

Lovely setting and staff but unfortunately 3 of our party left hungry :( Two of us had sea bass (3 very small pieces of fish each) and one had duck (2 and a bit, very slim slices of breast). Potatoes /fries/veg are an additional cost, and essential! On a positive note the 4th person in our group ordered spaghetti bolognaise and there was plenty spaghetti. The quality and taste of our food was very good, however the meagre portion sizes would deter our return.

This was a back up option for our meal last night and I'm soooo glad we went in here. It doesn't look like much from the front and all dining is at the back of the building which you can't see until you venture in. So glad my partner talked me in to it. We both had bruscetta options for starters, I had spaghetti bolognese and my partner had ox cheek (he was raving about the parsnip risotto) and we both had tirimisu for pud. A bottle of merlot was also drank. The food was really good and decent size portions and very tasty as was the wine. The service was excellent and didn't feel like we were waiting too long in between course. Our bill was £107 with £35 of that being the wine. Look beyond the tired frontage and you'll be very pleased, I'm sure. Couldn't fault our evening

Ate in the restaurant… friendly staff and nice welcome, slightly long wait to order drinks though the waitress did apologise. I ordered duck breast (£22))and sorbet (£5)for pudding…. I received a small portion with only 3 slices of duck breast and a few veg…. Had to order chips separately… and the sorbet was what appeared to be 3/4 of a single scoop… it tasted nice but the portions were laughably small…. Would have been 2 stars but interestingly my dining companion was very satisfied with the quality and size of her choice ( gnocchi then crème brûlée cheesecake!)

We’ve visited a few times and every time the food and atmosphere has been excellent. The food tonight was outstanding, so fresh and tasty. Service from Alex was very welcoming. Can’t wait to return!

Decided to go out for a meal to Ballater’s Lovely clean place and the food was amazing would highly recommend it. The food was very well presented

Went for a family meal and it was brilliant, great service, great food, lovely young man looking after us, just an all round great experience and our new local fave place to eat, highly recommended we will be back soon.

We have been visiting Ballater for many years but have just discovered this wee gem. Trying to find something different for hogmanay, we tried out their festive hogmanay menu. It did not disappoint. We were made to feel welcome from the minute we walked in the door and we thoroughly enjoyed every course. Fabulous atmosphere, amazing staff and delicious food. We will definitely be back. Happy New Year. Thanks to the Green Inn for kicking off our NY celebrations in style.

We have been in Ballater for many years and never been in the building never mind the restaurant. The experience was very pleasant and food delicious. Would highly recommend a visit to this wee gem and will return to enjoy the experience asap!

Brilliant food with attentive and friendly service. Lovely and cosy atmosphere. The white choc profiteroles were amazing and very light after the first and second courses! Highly recommend.

What a find. Lovely restaurant with conservatory area, went for dinner. Good lighting, space between tables, chairs comfortable table for2 a good size. Menu not massive (good) good choice & not overly expensive. I had the hake special - absolutely lovely. Friend had salmon risotto- fab. Decent wine list, usual prices. Service excellent & waitress friendly & knowledgeable. Thoroughly enjoyed our meals & would highly recommend. Would have gone back if we had more time.

Wow! The food exceeded our expectations - the menu looked so inviting from outside. It was sublime .

We dined at the Green Inn to celebrate two birthdays and enjoyed a very memorable dinner. We enjoyed a wide variety of starters, main courses and deserts all of which were well cooked and well presented. We will be back again next year!

Couldn't fault this restaurant. Food was superb, the service friendly and fast, the setting was pleasant and the price was moderate for the all round experience. Happy to take cash too, which for us is ever more important.

Another great meal tonight returned with family for 2nd visit as 1st visit was faultless! Service extremely welcoming & friendly Quality & presentation of food excellent! We definitely recommend & now our “go to” when visiting Ballater!

Excellent dinner. Staff were very helpful and service was slick. The menu is Italian / British. Great choices from both countries' food. The food itself was very good. Prices are about average for this standard of restaurant. Mains £16 - £28.

We visited the restaurant on the Friday after Burns Night and the menu reflected that with an Italian twist, Haggis neeps and taties were on the menu. The food quality and level of service was excellent. The ambiance was warm and welcoming. Prices seemed reasonable.
