Half Way House in Mid Devon

Once again we enjoyed a lovely meal at The Halfway House, freshly cooked & very tasty, served by great friendly staff Full marks to the chef

Went for a meal with friends, was really impressed with the waitress Irene, was very accommodating which is more than I can say for the manager, he was arrogant and rude. We get together every month for a meal and will definitely not be coming back.

If I could rate a zero I would !!! We came I to this pub on our way past and the service was absolutely terrible. My younger sister was eating food in the car and had one mouthful left that she was eating while stood in the bar, want to make it clear she did not have food in her hand just finishing her mouthful as we could not leave the food In the car as we have a dog in there. He proceeded to tell her that they serve food here and that it was rude of her to bring food in, even tho there was no food present, after this she apologised and explained the situation to which he rolled his eyes at and scuffed she then asked what soft drink they do as some pubs do different options and he snapped back in the rudest way I think i have ever heard “the usual” which to me is absolutely out of order for someone that has worked In a pub I couldn’t never dream of talking to a customer like that, when we where paying my sister asked if she could insert her card instead of contactless to which he snatched the card from her hand and put it in card reader and then aggressively slammed the card machine in front of her. This whole interaction made both of us very uncomfortable I Understand that we all have bad days but this was ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING ESPECIALLY AS IT WAS THE OWNER OF THE PUB !!!!.

Great experience, greeted cheerfully,sat at table,drinks served,food order taken,all with a smile and chat...Fabulous food,served promptly and hot...6 meals all very tasty and absolutely faultless....first time re visiting here in over 40 years!!! beautifully decorated and well cared for establishment,credit to you all....we will be back 😁

One of the best carvery meals I have had. Lovely tasty wholesome food and generous portion. Knew it was good when we saw every table full! Do give it a visit.

Had 3 successive very good evening meals while house- sitting, dropped in on the first night and worked through a really good varied menu based on local produce and serving what seemed to be a regular local returning clientele of diners,usually a good sign. A friendly, peaceful ( no music or games in the dining area) and well- run mainly dining pub with a separate bar and games section on the other side of the pub. Good value and tasty, would definitely go again.

Wow, just wow! Well worth a visit. Staying locally, we tried the Halfway House for a meal! The staff were fantastic throughout - so friendly and helpful offering advice where needed. The food was delicious. The menu choice was good and the specials menu added some lovely extra options into the mix. If we were staying longer we would have returned. Prices were very reasonable considering the quality and portion size of the food served Worth calling ahead to check they have a table but this pub does things so well, it is worth a visit if you are in the area.

Brilliant friendly and Welcoming.....my wife had the pie and I had the Chicken Tikka......highly recommended if your down that area.

The food was just what was needed at that point of the day, Sunday roast was lush. I had pork and beef, the cauliflower cheese was delicious and the crackling nice n crispy. The place was busy, they keep a decent cellar. Under £40 for two drinks and two Sunday roasts I thought was very reasonable.

We arrived on a Saturday evening just on the off chance to see if we could get a light meal on our homeward journey from Devon. It was already very busy but they still found us a table and the food was lovely and worth the wait. The staff were very friendly, polite and accommodating especially as I needed a gluten free meal. Would highly recommend.

Fish and chips, nice chips fish was vile Prawn cocktail very bland not enough sauce needs some background music too staff not overly welcoming either

Always try and find somewhere just off the main roads to pit stop for lunch on way down to Cornwall rather than service station for a good pub lunch and let the kids stretch their legs. Big car park next to some sheep which the kids liked, good garden in the sunshine so ate outside. Great pub food (especially anything from the local butchers!) with kids menu served quickly with good ales on tap would recommend and return soon!

Absolutely love this place. We had the steak pie today and it was the best I’ve ever tasted followed by the lemon and lime cheesecake. Delicious. Irene who serves there is the nicest, friendliest person you’ll ever meet. She would brighten up the cloudiest day. A must try if you’ve never been. We were also there last week and had the lasagne which is my favourite. 5 star service, food and excellent value for money.

Went in for a couple of pints after work. Friendly guy behind the bar. The food looked really nice.

Didn't feel welcome despite booking. The owner was exceptionally rude and felt we were an inconvenience. We would have gone somewhere else if we hadn't walked across from Sampford Peverell and needed a rest before returning back. It is a shame for a local pub as the staff work really hard and always remain cheerful.

Quiet, relaxed and very clean. Wonderful food that was clearly made fresh but still came out quickly. No issues with car parking. There is plenty of options for sitting inside and out. Would definately eat here again.

We had a perfect Sunday Roast today ! The food and service were absolutely brilliant ! Would Highly recommend ! All the food was home cooked. There was a lovely selection of vegetable’s. One of the best roast dinners I have eaten out in a long time ! Thank you !

The food was good and the waitress was ok but the attitude of the man behind the bar was disgusting. He came around a couple times and snatched glasses off the table and after our meal we were told to come to the bar to sort out our bill as if he wanted us gone as soon as possible. No Thankyou or was everything ok, just a rude attitude. Will not be going back until he’s gone.

Nice food, good selection on menu and specials. Nice pint of Jail Ale on tap.

Since lockdown I have struggled to find a restaurant that still values good customer service and quality food. My search has happily come to an end. The halfway house staff were efficient and attentive. The food arrived at a good pace and was very enjoyable. Thank you Halfway House. We will be back.

Great food in a lovely relaxed atmosphere

We went for a Sunday roast and were pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Plenty if meat, 5 different veg, potatoes, stuffing, yorkshire (plus crackling and apple sauce with the pork) and a jug of extra gravy. There was more than enough vegetables for us all (We love veg but had to leave some). The gravy was simply delicious. The whole meal was piping hot and the 2 ladies that served us were so on the ball! What lovely ladies and we did not have long to wait for service, the meal, clearing the table or bringing the deserts. Cannot praise this restaurant enough. Yes you have to book as it is very popular, but we will definitely return. Thank you for such a wonderful meal.

While the food is excellent, the attitude of the landlord is terrible, he is moody and rude and as a result , we won’t return

Very Rude. The woman that greeted us was rude. When we sat down the bloke brushed against me and was rude as well. My elderly father got his coat on and we left. No help what so ever from them and will not be going back Invasion of space annd utterly rude. have never experienced that before. Will not be returning.

First time visitors as we were staying in the village seeing family and we found both food and service excellent. Menu states they use a local award winning butcher and both the Beef Bourguignon and the Steak Pie of the day were delicious. Friendly welcome and good service. Log burner made for a cosy and very warm pub.

The manager or the guy behind the balcony is rude, no maners and think that the world turns around him

A warm welcome along with excellent food and efficient service at the Halfway House. I made a large group booking for 35 people for lunch and the staff at the Halfway House could not have been more helpful or accommodating in making everything work for us. Highly recommended!

Must have missed the "no children" sign at the door. The gentleman behind the bar couldn't have been more unwelcoming - maybe it's time he got another job that he actually enjoys as he certainly doesn't give the impression that he wants to be there. Won't be in a rush to go back - shame as it's the only pub in the Willand.

This was our first visit to The Halfway House. We had Sunday lunch here to celebrate a family birthday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Food was delicious and the service was excellent. Staff were friendly and even though there was a slight mix up with our order, the manner in which they dealt with it added to our enjoyable experience. Would definitely recommend this lovely pub and we will be visiting again.

First time visit. Meals ok, but disappointed With service provided, felt like being a nuisance because we arrived without a booking. Don't think we will ever visit again. Atmosphere almost non existent. Lady who served meals did her best.

On my Saturday lunchtime visit the Halfway House was quiet. It is a few years since my last visit, I think the decor has changed, but it still has a nice atmosphere. I ordered my favourite pub meal, ham egg and chips. As before the meal was very good, lovely ham and well cooked chips, all nicely washed down by a nice pint of Reveller cider by Orchard Pig.

Had been recommended this pub for Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. Ultra generous potion sizes served quickly and piping hot. It seemed as though the pub had a great regular clientele - albeit the older crowd which limited the “buzz” a village pub should have. BUT the gentleman behind the bar managed to put a dampener on the experience… he made it clear he was not happy to be there and was just sour and unwelcoming. Maybe a training course in customer service and a personality injection may help! Several tables said “ just ignore him - he can’t help it!” So we did! 😁

Great place. We stopped off on way back from Dartmoor and we will definitely be back.

First visit. Very friendly staff. Had a meal of liver and bacon with mashed potatoes and an amazing onion gravy.

This was my second visit to Halfway House, the first was about 18 months ago when I still had my wonderful husband who loved good food and we agreed we would go back. Last night i went again with our friends Paul and Christina and again top class food and the service was excellent could not have wished for anything better even the weather could not have kept us away heavy rain and yellow warning wind. Thank you for the yummy food and top class service even Paul’s left over sausage wrapped with up for his lunch today 🥰 with care and a smiling face. Well done and thank you.🥂

First visit for a long time for lunch with my wife and a visiting friend. Had booked several days ago and pleased we did - the dining room was packed mainly with people of retirement age. Roaring log burner, clean and tidy room and a menu with enough choices to sort all tastes. One lady coping admirably with all the diners needs, assisted by a man who also coped well with taking orders, delivering items to tables and running the bar. Every meal was thoroughly enjoyed by all and plates were cleared. The bar had a generous range of beers on tap and we had alcohol free beer with the meal and tea in individual pots afterwards. Don't expect loud music, the latest furnishings of skimpy clad waitresses. You can expect generous portions of delicious food at very reasonable prices and a massive carpark for your vehicle.

Was in Uffculme for 2day stay, had dinner here first night was so good we booked for the last night too. Excellent food, very varied 3 course menu, attentive staff, roaring log burner. Night two had starters which was a mistake as we couldn't finish our mains! (portions are large) have vowed to visit again if/when in the area. We were in Devon to view holiday complex sale and if we succeed in buying we will definitely recommend Halfway House to our guests

Nice location with plenty of parking. Lovely Sunday roast, lots of meat and veg to share, more than other places we've visited.

Oh dear. The food matched the atmosphere.... Dreary and lifeless! I think the last time some of the staff smiled was a Thursday in 1984? Ordered what was advertised as lasagna? I believe every Italian would be spinning in their grave at thought of facing what was brought out to the table? Dry (and I'm talking Sahara desert levels here) topping that requires an acetylene torch to cut through. This was most definitely reheated from lunch time (although which one I cannot say without Carbon dating tests?) Then came the filling.... Tasteless, brown, and unrecognisable.. not even a hint of Italian herbs, and most certainly a first for a lasagna... No béchamel sauce in sight? Most definitely the worst lasagne I have ever had, and possibly the worst meal I've ever had too? It won't surprise you to know that I wouldn't recommend or return.

I have not visited Half Way House for a long time, since my last visit was abysmal. The chef was wearing the dirtiest jacker and apron as he walked through the bar, I (a retired chef) thought he'd been washing the floor.

What a fantastic find! Staying in the area for a couple of days and decided to eat here. The food was delicious, service was fantastic and atmosphere was brilliant. This pub has a great/varied menu & serves traditional/classic British meals. Highly recommend!

Had a brilliant night for my father's 70th staff couldn't of any more to help with preparations. This establishment I can't recommend enough good food good drink and brilliant staff thanks for the help

No one fault but the place was deserted so no atmosphere of any kind … the waitress was charming but the manager behind the bar was sour and displayed no sign of welcome or fellowship. Not even a smile. Despite being the only ones there, the food took for ever to come but was nice enough when it did with good size tasty portions. Wouldn’t rush back coz missing a pubs true attraction ie warmth and welcome. Maybe a bit of PR training to the management team would go amiss!

Booked the day before based on others reviews - easy to find and very handy stop off from m5 southbound. Good car park and friendly pub. Service was great and food was amazing, tender roast beef and lots of home cooked veg - would def recommend

I booked a table for two at short notice, and the staff were very accommodating and slotted us in. Beautifully cooked beef and pork were on offer, and it was perfect. Plenty of veg. Staff very friendly and for cider drinkers, recommend you try a pint of the Orchard Pig. Definitely will return - thank you to all involved. Fantastic venue for my dad's 90th birthday, we had the skittle alley for about 30 of the family great fun 🎳 buffet was amazing. Patrick, Lisa and all the staff team so helpful. Some also had supper there and Sunday lunch food outstanding would certainly recommend and will most definitely return when next visiting my dad.

After an arduous journey with the M5 being closed we stumbled across this little gem. They very kindly kept the kitchen open for us. The food was great and matched the service. I’d give additional stars if 8 could. One of our party lost a hearing aid. We contacted them when we got home and they went outside to find it, successfully and have agreed to post it back. Like I said, fab service.

Tasty food as usual! As a local, it’s always great knowing your local pub does good food and generally has a friendly atmosphere. The bar side is dog friendly which makes for it a nice stop with the dog and a nice sunny beer garden...

We found the attitude of the bar person was rather abrupt and not really welcoming. The waiting staff was courteous and polite and nothing was too much trouble. The food was very tasty and of good quality. We think the bar person needs a lesson...

In Cullompton on holiday, decided to have meal out one evening, there were many to chose from in the area, and decided to go here , well so glad we did, service was great, good was great, atmosphere the same,😎👍 highly recommended 😋
