Hirsts Bakery in Harrogate

this was a horrible place me and my family couldn't have a relaxing break the waitress was horrible and the food was mould absolutely disgusted

Nice traditional bakery and cake shop..wonderful tempting display of cream cakes, etc. Only issue, no prices on display! Surely that's a legal requirement to display prices? 4 cakes/slices came to over £12. Despite to good cakes the pricing situation may well put off using again.

I ordered 2 x ham sandwiches, both lovely. I also order 1 x bacon sandwich. The bacon was seriously off! It stunk when the sandwich was opened and tasted off. I rang the bakery to warn then to not serve any more today - and my call was met with arrogance. the chap who answered the phone assured me he opened the bacon and cooked it himself this morning....i explained that 3 over 50years old adults can assure him that it was indeed off! He did offer me a refund if i went back. I am not going for that, but i assured him we wont ever be buying from there again. It is possible that he cooked this at 4am and when i bought it at 2pm it hadn't been kept in the correct conditions.

Fabulous bakery and cake shop, so much to choose from and reasonably priced. Staff very helpful and friendly. Take a large bag as Im sure you will come out with a large selection.

Had a good lemon meringue, staff were very nice, prices were good and fair for the quality, I would recommend this. Overall good place.

Very over priced. One sandwich with tuna and cucumber £4.49. 2 slices of brown bread spread with tuna and 4 pieces of cucumber really a rip off

We went here to get some pies and cakes for bonfire night and although the lady serving was pleasant I was shocked that she didn’t use tongs or gloves to pick any of the food up it’s just not good hygiene as far as I’m concerned . The food did look delicious though .

We made a point to stop by here to sample their delicious warm pork pies. Verdict? Delicious! We even took some away to freeze for later enjoyment. Towards the end of our visit to this quaint town we returned to indulge in their apple turnovers - full of cream and delightfully wicked! Oh, and the staff, whilst extremely busy were patient and friendly. Thank you!

The take-away pork pie with a mint and pea topping was a gem. It will last long in the memory. So fresh and tasty and great water crust pastry.

First words from husband when he went in for our treats was that the owner was very rude to her staff! So disappointed, advertised as crab and Prawn in granary bread when we got home it was crab and prawn flavoured fish stick mix chopped up with mayo. No crabs or prawns were hurt during the making! Quiche was too eggy fresh cream cake slice was inedible, layers of what tasted like cardboard some with wedges of cooking chocolate and cream. Will not be going back

Extremely expensive! And in all honesty , the cream bun was very bland and a bit stale ..... I should have known , no prices on anything is usually an instant swerve , never again will I step foot inside

This place is a gem. Good, honest home cooking with a traditional, heart feel. Plenty to choose from and always so fresh and tasty. Staff are so friendly and welcoming, even though it is a busy shop they are always so happy to serve you and advise on what they have to offer. Also, it is incredible value compared to some of the chain bakeries that charge much more for lesser quality. The only area for improvement would be to have some labels to explain what things are, but to be honest the interaction with the staff more than makes up for the lack of signage, and they are so busy that it would be a heck of a job keeping up with relabeling as the stock moves. I have been going here for years, whenever we visit Knaresborough I have to pop in for a treat (we live in East Yorkshire so unfortunately only get to go 3/4 times a year, although it's probably a good thing that it's not on my doorstep or I would definitely put weight on!).

I was not at all impressed with my recent visits to Hirst’s bakery. The person who served me was extremely rude and shouted at me like I was an imbecile. I also didn’t like that they picked everything up with their bare hands, no gloves or tongs in sight. They never cleaned their hands between customers either… yuck!! I will not be going back for the prices they were charging and the appalling hygiene practices. I threw my food in the bin, couldn’t eat it.

Had a look around knaresborough last week. Called in hirst's, first time. Beautiful beef sandwiches, sausage rolls, custard slice & curd tart and coffees to eat in the car before continuing our journey. Very nice indeed.

Called into Hirsts Bakery whilst on a visit to the market. Bought a fresh cream slice. Looked amazing in the display. I was shocked at the price I was charged £3.05 but thought it could be worth it. It wasn’t !! Disappointed and annoyed. Surprised to find a chunk of cheap chocolate in the middle !! Why? Won’t be spending my money there ever again !!

Gosh what a disappointing experiment. Feel totally ripped off. Over £9 for three pastries. They display a large piece of curd tart in the window then we got given a tiny piece. No matter-it was disgusting. Terrible place.

We were in Knaresborough yesterday and went into Hirsts and bought one small custard tart and a French apple tart. The custard tart was soggy with very little custard. The apple tart was a disaster. A French apple tart should have stewed apple underneath a thin layer of apple slices on top This was layer upon layer of raw apple. If we'd wanted raw apple we'd have gone to a greengrocers Awful No prices on anything and these 2 items cost well over £7. We definitely won't be going to Hirsts again

Visited Knaresborough on Saturday and walked past this bakery - cakes all looked amazing so we went in to take some home. No prices on anything . Bought a florentine which was burnt, chocolate brownie that had an awful chemical aftertaste, chocolate muffin that was so dry it was indelible and a plum tart which was soggy and tasted of nothing. £15 was the total. Never encountered a place where so many things are so terrible.

£12 bought us an apple tart with an orchard full of apples, a vanilla slice that matches the Knaresborough viaduct for height and span, a lovely brown loaf, baps and two chicken pies. Just got home and had the pies with chips & mushy peas and it’s better than both meals out we had over the weekend at an average £50 a time. Buy a chicken pie, they are a revelation!

Wife and myself went to Knaresborough for a day out without our children. We decided to buy them a cake to take home and Hirsts really did look inviting. 1 lemon meringue pie and 1 strawberry tart for them but the cost was an absolute shock to my wife who felt too committed to buy £8.25…. If it had been me in the store I would have walked out!! But I was waiting outside with our dog. What an absolute rip off for a bakery to charge these sorts of prices. We loved Knaresborough and will return, but can assure you that we will definitely not be back to this bakery again. Such a shame really as the cakes looked good.

Today we decided to buy our supper from Hirsts and they did not disappoint! Steak & Kidney pies, pork pies, Chicken pies , quiche and the great Yorkshire pasty. Plus the most amazing cakes massive custard tarts , Yorkshire tart and mouthwatering filo pastry filled...

We looked in the window and the display of buns and cakes just drew us into the bakery it’s so refreshing to see such a selection of different breads cakes and buns not to mention the bread and butter pudding they also do a selection...

We couldn’t walk passed as it smelt so good . We bought a selection of cakes to take home . Absolutely delicious . The curd tarts and the cream and jam scones were excellent .

Absolutely love the pork pies with mushy peas and mint sauce on. Was dubious when first ordering one but my goodness they are delicious. Staff and lady Baker very polite and friendly.

I made the mistake of not asking the price of a Rascal cake....I now know why they don't put the price on them.It cost me £1.70 for a dryish rock style scone with a couple of glacier cherries in,also it was not handed to me...

The normal pork pies, sausage rolls are second to none, but the pork pies with mushy peas and mint topping are delicious and without question worthy of any National award. Every time we travel to Knaresborough from Kent we have a full list to fill....

Hisrts is a lovely traditional bakers, and quite special with it. The staff are charming - the older ladies can be a bit dry, and the younger staff are fun so it balances out nicely and the service is great.

Is it me or does anybody else think that paying £1.60 for a breadbun medium size just a breadbun is extortionate. To top it off they charged me £2.40 for a strawberry tart. Both were fine nothing exceptional apart from the price. Personally I will not be frequenting that store again !!

Every time we come to knaresborough we come here, just standing looking through the window your mouth water lol lovely homemade pies and cakes are delicious

Just tried a steak and ale individual pie ,lovely crisp pastry rich gravy and nice chunks of steak .

On recent visit purchased the small pork pie and some Hot cross buns. As the son of a Master baker I can highly recommend both of these items from personal experience. The shop was very busy and all the produce looked to be of very good quality and extremely appetising. well worth a visit..

Lovely bread and cakes, But some of the meat pies are sadly, well a politeness would be non-competitive. To make a Cornish, I suggest they try the village shop at Monk Fryston - yummy, with proper filling - not sausage meat.

Called early Saturday morning The variety and quality was amazing Could have bought one of everything. Took a bread and butter pudding and some cakes back to Manchester. Wish I had a shop like that in my Town

You can't come to Knaresborough with visit Hirsts. It's an ' institution '. Artisan bread and cakes to die for.

This is a proper bakery! by that I mean it is all so well made, by hand and full of flavour! the fresh cream is so thick, not like cheaper chain bakeries. You can get most types of sandwich made for you and the cheesecake slices are to die for!

As Bettys have stopped making Truffle Logs I was pleased to find them in Hirsts. There Coffee fresh cream meringes are also amazing. Everything is always fresh and staff friendly
