(1) Service. Staff behaviour was unprofessional and simply unacceptable for people in the service industry. We had the most bizarre experience where on the morning of checkout, staff member Martin unnecessarily escalated an incredibly minor comment that had been put to bed the previous night. The comment was around inconsistent treatment between guests who were celebrating and was so minor, yet it escalated as he accused us of something we didn’t do, and he implied that we were liars. Not sure what I’m to gain by lying in this situation, it’s not like I was trying to get anything out of them. Regardless, this should have gone down as a petty “he said / she said” scenario which didn’t even need to be mentioned in the morning. When we didn’t accept his version of events given they were untrue, he proceeded to storm off in a dramatic fashion declaring that “we were not very nice people”. He went from chatting with us and calling us “lovely people” after dinner to being personal and asking us to leave in the morning. This change in attitude towards us and very public attack was highly embarrassing and was not at all justified. Owner Ally who witnessed this encounter then decided to support her staff member by also attacking us; however, when questioned to provide specific examples on why their behaviour was justified, she was unable to do so as in her words had “only been there since 9am”. Moreover, whether you like a guest or not, you simply cannot behave like a child whilst at work, and particularly not when you work in the service industry. As an owner you certainly shouldn’t be condoning this. This treatment of paying guests will not take the business far. (2) Accommodation If you choose to eat here, I would not recommend staying as the accommodation offering was very poor; it was worse than student accommodation in my opinion. Not only was it very basic but it was shabby with mould in the bathroom and filthy carpets. One of rooms had a malfunctioning heater so was freezing on arrival - this was a known issue when reported to reception. The same room had a rattling window that was not conducive to a good night’s sleep. Our rooms were placed next to store cupboards so we were constantly disturbed by people frequenting those. We were also kept awake by what sounded like a washing machine / tumble dryer running below us through the night and we were disturbed by staff from 6am. I do find it strange how you can offer such a premium experience downstairs but the exact opposite upstairs. During our friendly chat after dinner Martin agreed with us and he said that the rooms had been untouched since turned from a pub. I believe he said that they were next on the list for being refurbished so perhaps future guests will benefit from that. The poor accommodation was acknowledged by staff as they kindly offered to take this off our bill (we didn’t ask for this) due to the disruption we were subjected to. (3) Atmosphere Personally, we didn’t enjoy the set up of the restaurant as it was split into 2 parts; there were tables in the room with the kitchen in where all the action was and there were tables in an adjoining room which houses the toilet behind a sliding door in the corner. Watching people going in and out of the toilet all night can only be described as grim and is not something I expect from a Michelin star restaurant; it’s very off-putting. During our friendly chat after dinner, Martin perfectly described this as like a toilet on a train. In general, we felt like we weren’t receiving the same experience as others by being put in that adjoining room - this is pot luck depending on the table allocation. We were offered a table in the main part of the restaurant if we were to return but of course that won’t be happening. (4) Food Food was of course good. For me though, it’ll never make up for shocking service and poor facilities and to be honest I can’t even remember what we ate due to it being totally overshadowed by the poor experience we had.

Well. .. all I can say is, amazing!!!! From the second we got here it was brilliant!!! The lodge was beautiful, modern and spacious with fully stocked complimentary mini fridge. James on the bar/reception was brilliant. Very attentive and knowledgeable and just great company. We came for the tasting menu and we are blown away. Absolutely fantastic!!! Couldn't fault a thing. Sensational!!!! The staff were exceptional!!!!! Very attentive and super friendly. And to top our evening off we had the privilege of having a drink with Alex in the bar afterwards. Such a lovely man! Fabulous night, fabulous food. Can't wait to come back 😊

Booked for dinner for the full tasting menu experience. Enjoyed all the courses, particularly surprised by enjoying the oyster as the opening dish as I normally avoid oysters but this one was delicious. Each course is explained clearly (which is helpful as you only get a menu at the end of dinner). I opted not to have the wine pairing, which was a good decision. Others who chose the wine pairing didn't rave about any of the wine choices. I made the mistake of ordering initially a glass of chardonnay (without having seen a menu of wines by the glass beforehand) which I just couldn't drink. Cloudy & slightly bitter. I'd recommend you look at the menu before choosing. Overall, however, it was a fun experience. My only criticism, (although it wouldn't reduce my score) is that there were just too many courses. Breakfast was interesting. A set placing per person of fish, cheese, boiled egg, bread, fruit tart & yoghurt. We all enjoyed the evening & the dining experience. Sent from AOL on Android

Food was amazing ,it’s a shame the same attitude wasn’t taken with the bedrooms ,very basic ,when you consider the spend you would think the owners would make the whole experience special ,we where also left a deposit in the toilet by the previous occupants but decided on flushing away rather than taking a photo and showing the guy on reception

We were celebrating my birthday, and having read a few years ago now, a fabulous review in the Sunday Times, we decided to finally make the trip to Northumberland. The journey was well worth it, and we enjoyed a most fabulous evening, eating amazing food and enjoying the spectacle of the open kitchen, it was honestly one of the best dining experiences we have had, and we have eaten in quite a few Michelin starred restaurants both here and abroad. We stayed overnight in the accommodation and found it was clean and comfortable, followed by a truly unique and tasty breakfast next morning, we cannot wait to return the next time we are heading north, and heartily recommend a visit. Thank you to all the staff, and the chef, you have a unique restaurant offering.

We have had a menu voucher for Hjem for a while and finally had the pleasure of using it, what a wonderful experience. The booking process was simple and the team helped us to rearrange when our plans had to change. The restaurant itself is beautiful and well curated, cocktails were incredible and made to our preference which was extra special. The open kitchen is a real delight. The menu was absolutely exquisite. We love a tasting menu and enjoyed all the courses at Hjem. The team work extra hard to make the whole experience fantastic and is really worth it.

We ate here last night for my birthday. We’re staying in Northumberland for a week and had been recommended. I am vegan and often feel I get short changed compared to my carnivore husband. But not here! The food was delicious. Tasty and beautifully served. Also being a couple of meters from the kitchen was fascinating and made it even more special. The staff are attentive, very professional but also friendly. I loved how everyone got involved coming over to bring dishes out.

Have been fortunate enough to visit Hjem on 2 separate occasions and both were equally superb. Both times we stayed over, the first in a small/basic double room about the restaurant, and second time in one of the fantastic lodges over the road. The lodge in particular was excellent with a great selection of complimentary treats provided. The bar in the restaurant is very welcoming with a great selection of drink options available. Dinner on both occasions has been superb, as good as I've ever eaten. Service is wonderful, with real care and attention shown but never feeling too formal/stuffy. Every member of staff really cares about the service with the chef and team even serving dishes and speaking to the customers. The wine pairing is excellent value and really adds to the experience. Breakfast is fantastic with a great Scandi style spread - a lovely change to typical British fayre. We would definitely return again and look forward to doing so.

We booked for a family meal and stayed in one of the cottages over the road from the hotel. We had the 14 course tasting menu and it was so delicious and beautifully presented. The chefs were on hand to finish off their dishes nearby us and waiters described the dishes to us. It was fabulous in every conceivable way. We also had the wine pairing and this too was wonderful. We also loved the crockery made in a nearby pottery. Well done to all.

We dined and stayed over at Hjem for our wedding anniversary, from walking through the door we were made to feel so welcome. The dinning experience is nothing short of outstanding, the open kitchen concept is so entertaining. It was mesmerising watching them, it was like a well choreographed dance. We didn’t plan to have the wine flight as we hadn’t had a great experience at another restaurant but after talking to James we trusted him immediately and went with the wine on offer and we were so glad we did. We loved that we weren’t given a menu we felt like we were on a journey of discovery. The staff are so knowledgeable and enthusiastic a true asset to the business. Our breakfast was also beautiful it was so relaxed but you could tell there had been so much thought put into it to make it feel that way. Hjem is a real gem in the Northumbrian countryside we’ll definitely be back.

A beautiful one in a lifetime dining experience. Everything was perfect! The waiter was extremely friendly and informative - we learnt so much from him. Had the taster menu paired with the non-alcohol drinks, which was magical. Very impressed with the non-alcoholic amaretto! The food was delightful - couldn't fault it at all. Hjem is also very accommodating to food preferences. It truly was a magical once in a lifetime experience - fine dining at its best.

Hmmm for overall 750 pounds for two! (including the lodge stay with breakfast and no wine pairing) I just expected more…. It’s a tasty and fun dinner (good service, nice vibe), a nice pre served (sitting on the table before we came) breakfast. The rest is just a B&B experience with not very smiley staff in the morning. I would advise against staying overnight. If you want to give it a try come just for dinner, the rest is personally not worth the money. (3 stars due to the overnight stay)

Restaurant Hjem has always been a culinary Michelin star experience - this was our 3rd time visiting with friends and we’re def not regular fine dining people. If there’s one place we’d recommend a dining experience, it’ll be here. The whole meal is a journey, and for internationals like us, we thought when it came to good food, flavor and spice we knew it well - but this was an entire experience on its own. It’s a visual and tasting experience, as the dish is explained to you + the food enters your mouth, our perception on food changed and we were just glad to be there. Watching the team work really adds to the experience and is something we’ve only seen on tv. The customer service is top level. It’s a 15 course menu and yes, it’s enough to fill you up (even if you don’t fill yourself up with the generous alcohol pairing option). There’s free parking on site and they have lodging too. Highly recommended 💯

A meal I won’t forget for a long time, and service to match. Set is a beautifully relaxed, intimate dining room with open kitchen, all senses are tingling from start to finish! Every dish was well balanced and interesting, with an amazing list of produce used. I loved the style of the menu, with lots of courses being one or two bites, giving you the opportunity to taste more unusual things. My mouth is watering, reliving the experience! We didn’t go for the matched drinks, but the wines and cocktails we had were all excellent, with recommendations being spot on. I loved seeing the way the kitchen operated, calm and well organised precision. Brilliant music in the dining room provided a great atmosphere and buzz, and the service was very attentive without being at all overbearing. A very nice touch was chef visiting each table throughout the service, a real treat. We finished our lunch with drinks in the cosy bar next door. It would be a great spot for anyone staying in the hotel, which unfortunately we weren’t, this time. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The trip to the restaurant was really easy by train and taxi, with the restaurant organising the return journey. I got all of the details, including taxi numbers, on the restaurant website. I’d highly recommend Hjem, and can’t wait to go again!

Absolutely stand out cooking worth more than the one star they’ve currently got. The snacks at the beginning of the meal were mind blowing. You can feel the passion and effort in this restaurant and everything about the place is just lovely. Breakfast gorgeous. The young team trained so well and so full of enthusiasm. Even the playlist is cool in an inclusive, fun but personal way. The sommelier has built a brilliant, interesting wine list at very good value for this quality. The lodge we stayed in was lovely and super comfy bed. The all inclusive mini bar a little extra touch of thoughtfulness that adds to feeling special. All but the most die hard meat and two vegers would love it here. Well well worth the trip. Just be warned it could ruin going anywhere else as it’s hard to bump back to reality after an idyllic trip to Wall.

Restaurant Hjem is located in the small village of Wall in the beautiful Northumberland countryside. Hjem (pronounced "yem") is both a Northumbrian and Scandinavian word for "home", making it an apt name for the restaurant which sees the very best produce of Northumberland come together with Scandinavian values and cooking techniques. Tucked away within the popular pub, The Hadrian at Wall, the 24-seat restaurant, which boasts a stunning open kitchen, brings the flavours and style of Scandinavia to the Tyne Valley with an ambitious tasting menu."

Right in front of the kitchen so we could marvel at the concentration and skill of the chefs. We all enjoyed the theatre and choreography of the service. Every bite was delicious, as it was last time. We felt the cost of wine pairing for four was a bit scary so chose from the (huge) wine list ourselves and were happy with that. We were greeted by our hosts in a professional and friendly way. The atmosphere was lovely , friendly and courteous, but not snooty. This set the tone. Our room was clean and comfy with lovely hot bath water , lovely toiletries and nice coffee machine. The cold continental breakfast was delicious and different. Our tasting menu was a joy as were the restaurant and staff . All knowledgable and clearly very proud of their restaurant . We did meet Aly and Alex ( who were both lovely) but they were not at the evening service. It was not noisy ( some careful discrete soundproofing seems to have been done). The chefs worked like a quiet orchestral team in front of us assembling each course before our eyes . They each delivered courses to us and described them . They were all interesting and interested and everything was as we would expect- as was the delicious and varied menu. We did not have the wine pairing as it’s not our thing and bumps up the cost a lot. We did feel the menu and b&b ( for two) were about the right cost for a Michelin star restaurant and special treat that we both thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you all :-)

We had high expectations for this place and we were not disappointed. The first star is definitely deserved and I hope they get another soon. The tasting menu with accompanying wine was astonishing. Service was efficient, but friendly and relaxed with sommeliers who had done their research and came up with some interesting facts (and indeed wines), which I always enjoy. A particular hit was the Swedish ice cider which went with the three-stage dessert very well indeed. The numerous smaller starters got things off to an amazing start with the lobster croissant being my personal favourite. If I had any criticism it would be that there wasn’t enough bread offered. A loaf of restaurant-made sourdough was indeed one of the courses (complete with introduction to their starter, which I enjoyed as a bread geek), but there wasn’t quite enough to soak up the copious accompanying booze. Perhaps another of those mini-loaves would have been perfect. That said, I loved all the local produce in particular the grouse main course. Would definitely like to go back at some point!

We booked this restaurant for our anniversary and also decided to stay at the hotel. We knew what to expect with regards to everyone being seated and served at the same time but it still felt a bit regimented, although I appreciate this is probably to assist the chefs. We had a lovely table and we could see the chefs working which was interesting. To start you are served several very small courses, usually one bite, but after a while I got a bit sick of these offerings! The rest of the food was nice but be warned there are a lot of courses and we were there 3.5hrs! We also did the wine flight which was very nice. We just weren’t blown away like some of the other Michelin star restaurants we have visited and in some respect I felt a little disappointed Hjem didn’t live up to the hype! The staff were very good in both the bar and restaurant and are a credit. The hotel room was clean but basic and we expected a much better standard, I do feel this was reflected in the price of the room but it’s just added to taking the shine off things. A nice meal but we won’t be back I’m afraid. We feel glad we have been able to tick it off our list but it’s not quite there with the wow factor which is a shame.

Not sure where to start, maybe at the beginning, I booked our table and paid (in full) two months earlier for a table for a special occasion. We arrived a little earlier expecting to be taken for an aperitif then taken to our table at the time we had booked. To our amazement it was only once everyone else had arrived (bar full) that over an hour later we were escorted to our table and served our first taster. It really felt like going for a school meal, sitting in a bland canteen, everyone being escorted into the restaurant at the same time and all served each course simultaneously. I understand this is easier for the staff a gradual influx of people, less pressure, but if you book the first table time you will be waiting the longest to be sat at your table. I saw previous comments about the noise, it is very loud, if you have a hearing loss (mine is usually manageable) the wooden floors, open plan arrangement, music speakers the noise just bounced around , customers all talking, is a battle that I personally had to give up on, I couldn’t even hear the explanations of our food or have a conversation with others at the table. Voices raised to be heard over the music and the other diners/waiters who were giving their explanations at other tables (it was like a vicious circle as everyone raises their voices to be heard). So we sat and over the two and a half hours (minus the time in the bar) the food arrived, seated in the most uncomfortable chairs. My back didn’t appreciate the Scandinavian cafe chairs. We had the wine flight and the wines matched the food well, nobody in our group particularly cared for the dessert wine. It was not to our taste. There were a few dishes that were an explosion of taste/senses and memorable, the chicken liver and Madeira was exceptional, crab, kohlrabi and mustard and broadbeans and buttermilk need a mention. I struggle with HJEM the food was excellent but not being able to hear because of the acoustics, I missed ‘the theatre’ of having food and wine explained (which is half the fun) and was unable to hear conversation at our own table.

Great vibe, awesome wine, amazing food and a well thought out menu. We treated ourselves to an overnight stay too which was 100% worth it for the breakfast alone. The rooms aren't spectacular but if you drink enough of the fabulous wine on offer then you literally won't even care. The place captures the Scandi vibe very well yet remains authentic to its surroundings. (In case you are well versed in the Scandi vibe, let me reassure you, the people are way way more friendly at Hjem. 😂 ) If you love food, or you just love new experiences then Hjem is totally worth checking out.

Just visited Hjem in Wall and had to share the amazing experience. This place has an incredible vibe - very cozy and welcoming, just like its name suggests. The staff was attentive and friendly. The food was a standout, showcasing a mix of English and Scandinavian influences, and the attention to detail was spot-on, both in flavor and presentation. A true gem in Northumberland that gives you a taste of home while taking your palate on a remarkable journey. Definitely worth a visit!

We were lucky to be in the dining room where you could watch chef and his small brigade conjure up course after course with precision, flair and care. Whilst the flavours were often subtle and understated, they were all there and the result was divine....

One of the best tasting menus we have eaten in recent times. To put that in context, we have eaten at (for example) L'Enclume and Ynyshir (both Michelin 2*) a number of times. I would rank the food (and wine pairings) at Restaurant Hjem as approaching a similar level. From the snacks (x5) to the desserts/'Fika' (aka petits fours) (all of which were particular high points) there were surprises and interesting flavour combinations - alongside significant use of local Northumbrian ingredients. This level of food doesn't come cheap and you shouldn't expect it to... For the full experience of Tasting menu @ £150 / Wine pairing @ £100 / plus aperitif/water/coffee, you should budget on £250-275 a head plus service (@12.5%). If you decide to stay (recommended as Wall is a small village without lots of other options) the rooms are simple and clean and priced at a level that reflects that. The breakfast was excellent - mainly continental style (again prominently featuring local ingredients), plus an interesting grain porridge (the only warm dish). We understand that the menu and wine pairings change regularly, and certainly look forward to returning in the not too distant future to eat here again.

Simply perfect. Food, service, atmosphere, location, feeling. I really can’t fault anything, and I love to find a fault. The head chef/founder wasn’t even there but that makes it even more special. When a head chef isn’t there and the food is this good you know they know what they are doing. This is undoubtedly a 3 Michelin star restaurant (I’ve been to most) and will be soon if Michelin adapt to what amazing cuisine is in 2023. Absolutely the future of fine/great/brilliant dining (widen your scope Michelin). Of course it’s not cheap, but it is a special occasion venue and a place that will create memories that are priceless and timeless. Martin, Robbie, Marek, Ally, and everyone else we had the pleasure of your time. Thank you. Will be back.

Sublime meal from start to finish. Of course ‘Hjem’ translates to home; and that’s exactly how we felt, at home. Ally the owner was the perfect host. So nice having the kitchen team explain dishes to us, really brought a personal touch to an outstanding dining experience. The sommelier presented interesting and curious wines without pretension. Would thoroughly recommend.

Terrible experience. A circus of noise. A cacophony. The staff shouty and a rabble. Every table interaction is loud. The guests are encouraged to become boisterous. This is not a michelin dining experience. More like a canteen with mediocre food. Will lose their star soon. The owner is the loudest of them all. The sommelier is so loud and renders information of his life to all and sundry. Music is loud. You cannot even hear the dishes being robotically described. Could not wait to pay my bill and get out. Expensive.

Second time here, as good as two years ago. It deserves it's Michelin star. I have been fortunate to enjoy meals at Raby Hunt, Rogan's and L'Enclume - in terms of value for money, atmosphere and quality of dining experience, Hjem beats those other hands down.

Booked for me and mum at 12pm. Arrived at 12pm. Sat at a table between a walk and the back of the booth. People couldn’t walk by without walking sideways. Table didn’t belong there. Asked to move. But told the other table of 2 was booked. Well yes. So were we! No other options. Staff didn’t care at all. Terrible.

We were passing through Rothbury with friends, when hunger struck the kids. We were unfamiliar to the area and so just tried a couple of places nearest to where we’d parked - but seemed quite reluctant to accommodate, perhaps fatigued by the space between Christmas and new year. Cue Bewicks - we were warmly welcomed by a really lovely guy, who accommodated our party of four adults and four kids. We had coffees/juices and scones - although the menu looks really varied, with some wonderful sounding breakfasts and brunches. Coffee was very nice, cheese scones were amazing and the onion relish that accompanies… well, I really regret leaving without either a jar or the recipe. Well worth a visit.

Very salty garlic mushrooms. Rice looked like it had tinned vegetables mixed in. Disappointed unfortunately. Wouldn't return.

Smokey wet log was put into the open log burner/fire, causing the entire place to be filled with smoke. Bar was well stocked with alcohol but lacked in other options (e.g. not many soft drinks or hot chocolate). Young employee behind the bar came across unexperienced and possibly sheepish. They probably serve food but all we saw was an unplugged buffet fridge and empty plastic containers. Very central and close to Kielder Castle though
