Holm Restaurant in South Somerset

Holm Somerset is simply amazing. The Tasting menu that we chose was delicious. The service from Shaun and his team was personable and professional and they made everyone welcome. Set in an old bank, the decor and art work pleasant to the eye. We had a lovely evening and will return.

Holm comes highly recommended for its food. I would not demur but was surprised at, and not necessarily enamoured of, some of its "idiosynchracies." Our reservation was for two. On arrival we were shown to our table where menus had been placed next to the cutlery and napkins. Having studied the menu we realised that it was the chefs taster menu - approximately 8 courses for a fixed price of £69.00 per person. I am not quibbling about the price but about the fact that when we asked for an a la carte menu we were met with surprise and received the distinct impression that it wasn't favoured or expected. We hadn't requested the chefs menu when booking. Equally, neither the a la carte or chefs menu indicated gluten free or vegetarian options. Surprising as today every restaurant seems to include that information and surprising too given Holm's reputation for food. I had also indicated when booking that gluten free options would be helpful. I was helped in my choice of food ( gf because of coeliac disease) but it seems a strange oversight especially in a geographic area where there are many other very well reviewed restaurants which do provide this information. Surprising too were the deliberations required to accomodate a request that a "starter" become a main course. All dealt with eventually but seemingly not part of the plan as far as the restaurant was concerned. I am obviously a restaurant dinosaur. I like restaurants where the menu is the starting point for a discussion about the food and accomodations (within reason) are suggested and offered. Holm I feel is London performative and this approach is not in its DNA. Having said all this I will say that the food we ate was delicious. I live locally and have found that some of my remarks have resonated with my neighbours. Perhaps we are just not sophisticated enough.

Loved it in Feb. Tried to book for eight people plus four rooms for November. Not possible online. Sent 2 emails and left a voicemail - no response. Finally got through by phone two weeks ago. Was promised a “ proposal” within three days. Have heard nothing. Given up and gone elsewhere. Appalling service. Such a disappointment.

We had the chef’s tasting menu and every course was delicious and beautifully presented. One of us didn’t eat meat and the menu was modified. We also had the paired drinks menu. Some of the drinks were interesting, others were a perfect match and all were drinkable. The service and atmosphere were just what we were hoping for. The staff were friendly but not intrusive; knowledgeable; and helpful. We had a lovely evening and would recommend it to others.

We stayed two nights mid-week and had a lovely stay. We were warmly welcomed by Rachel and shown to our room, Ash. The bed was very comfortable and the shower hot and powerful. We particularly liked the artwork in the room ( and in the restaurant ) and the bedroom furnishings made by local artisans. On our first evening we had the tasting menu which was wonderful and in our opinion, well priced. We would have actually paid more with hindsight as it was on a par with other highly regarded retaurants nearer where we live. On the second night we opted for the a la carte menu which was also superb. On checkout there was a misunderstanding but over all our stay was excellent.

We never got to go. We are appalled at the treatment we received following a booking for Saturday evening (10th August). I had booked over a week in advance for four at 6.30pm on line through Open Table, was emailed a day before seeking confirmation that we would attend; which I confirmed. I was then telephoned at home at lunchtime on the day of our visit to be told that only the chef’s tasting menu would be available and that the a-la-carte menu would not be served. The Chef’s tasting menu is £69 pp for our party of four. With coffee, service charge and drinks this could have been north of £400, which we were not intending to pay when we booked. We were left disappointed, conned, let down, frustrated and angry. When did restaurant businesses go from being a customer service business model to a profit-at-any-cost business model at the expense of their local customers and their reputation. I will tell anyone who will listen that the reputation and respect for any business is hard won through providing a good customer experience. Holm, Somerset’s is an appalling example of greed, arrogance and ignorance with little ethical regard for its clientele. Needless to say we will never visit - ever.

Outstanding food and absolutely outstanding service. My partner was heavily pregnant for our visit, we ordered the taster menu and the chef kindly offered to amend the menu to suit her requirements. The staff gave us numerous alternatives and made my partner feel very special. The food was so good, it sent her into labour.

We were blown away by the quality for the food, setting and comfort of the rooms for our recent stay at Holm Somerset. Every member of the team were knowledgeable and friendly and we enjoyed attentive service throughout our stay. Particular thanks to Nicolas (Head Chef/ proprietor) and Shaun (General manager) Would definitely recommend and cant wait to return !

We had a 2 night stay and Tasting menu on 1st night. Wow! The rooms are comfortable and the Studio lounge for guests nice to sit and chill out. The food with accompanying drink selection delicious , both the vegetarian and meat / fish version. Breakfast was also tasty with a good choice, set us up for the day especially with the cinnamon brioche roll to take away for later 😊 . Ordered the tasting menu - exceptionally delicious from start to finish. Fantastic flavours and presentation. Lovely service. We are frequently eating out in acclaimed places - this was the best food we have tasted in quite a while.

First off the food was amazing, well presented in a timely way and full of flavour, could not fault. As for our service by a tall ginger haired guy I felt from the time we arrived to when we were pretty much ushered out,looked down on as if we were not good enough to be there. We had popped in for a causal lunch not a special occasion as he stated we must have. Like I’ve stated before the food was great and I had dessert which I never do,asked if we wanted anything else after the meal we stated we didn’t and were happy just chatting and finishing our wine when the bill turned up ( which we did not ask for) shortly followed by the card machine ( funny as the table by the side of us had arrived and finished way before us did not have this poor service) as I passed him my card he asked if it was going to be all on one card !( just two of us so as if I was going to split the bill with my OAP mother) This left me feeling not only embarrassed but really uncomfortable as we left.

The food was excellent. A bit surprised when offered cauliflower cheese it came as an extra. The roast potatoes where excellent too with a small amount of cabbage. The cauliflower should, in my opinion, been part of the roast beef. No atmosphere, when we arrived we just hung around until finally someone came to take us to our table. The bread was bought to the table being told it was soda bread, no way, just delicious brown bread. The decor could do with a facelift too. Slightly disappointing after the recommendation but the food was good.

Now this a really great place! Just done a 2 dinner, 2 night bundle and HOLM delivers a very good experience. The expert staff were a big part of this. Both the Chef's tasting menu & breakfast were top notch. The former waaay better experience than at L'Enclume, where the 5+ hour timing might suit the kitchen, but NOT these diners. HOLM got it just right with great dishes (nod to trout & blood orange) plus the tempo was spot on. To avoid this looking like a snow job, the loft room was lovely, but the 40+ steps less so, even the dog got vertigo. We will be back as it is really warm & welcoming place to dine & stay.

Great food. Explanations of each course on the Chef’s (tasting) Menu by the waiting staff were always a little rushed and not very clear. Not changing cutlery between courses was a little odd, so had to ask for clean cutlery. Staff could’ve been a little more attentive with drinks. Had to find a waitress to ask for drinks menu after finishing my drink 15 mins before, then had to ask another waiter 10 mins later to order a drink. Also they took my wife’s cocktail away before she had finished! The temperature of the room was incredibly hot - to the point where the lady next to us fainted! Worth saying though that these were all just picky comments, and definitely didn’t spoil what was a very lovely meal. Some very minor improvements and this would be 5/5 every time.

We’ve been lucky enough to eat In some lovely restaurants recently but we think this was the best food we’ve had. Our meals were exceptional. The atmosphere felt casual, loved the contemporary decor. The staff are so nice too and made our stay very pleasant. Our room was very clean and comfortable. Would highly recommend it.

We had the taster menu the food was divine especially the potato veloute. Little gem in an unexpected place. Enjoyed a good selection out cocktails. Decor and location was unique, a little bit of London in the countryside.

Visited whilst travelling home from Cornwall. Only needed a light bite but my wife swayed me into ordering the beef with a couple of sides. What we had was perfect. Accurately cooked beef, a refreshing beetroot salad and a take on a panisse with westcombe cheddar instead of a potato dish. Our next visit will be to stay and try the chefs menu. Great people, amazing food, stunning setting. 5*. We had two meat-eaters and one vegan; they gave me (the vegan eater) a bespoke menu with two delicious-sounding options each for starter and main, and they accommodated side-sharing by putting non-vegan things separately (the pink fir potatoes were incredible!) Can't ask for more. And most importantly, the vegan options had as much love, care and flavour as the other dishes. Huge thanks team - we'll be back!

I loved this place. We were fortunate to be able to spend a night in one of the 7 new bedrooms at Holm. The restaurant and rooms ache urban, Skandi cool, whilst being in the middle of a lovely village in Somerset Our room was beautifully designed and very comfortable, as was the whole property. The bed was super comfy, the shower was lovely and there was even a bath in the room if you are not already Zen enough. There is a mini bar in the room as well as tea and coffee making facilities with gorgeous freshly made cookies to great you on arrival. The separate snug, which hotel guests can use with an honesty bar, is a great touch. We also ate here and the restaurant is first class, every dish from the chefs menu in the evening and breakfast the following morning was fresh, full of flavour and delicious. The staff here are great. everyone that we met during our stay were so friendly and welcoming. You can tell that they love working here and that they are all invested in making this relatively new establishment the best that it can be. Special mention must go to Barry who met us when we arrived and was always on hand to help and make our stay extra special. Nothing was too much bother for him. He is truly an asset to this place. Thank you to everyone for a fab time, we will definitely be back.

My stay at Holm for my 40th birthday with my family was a firm highlight of 2023. I loved everything about it: the beautiful rooms overlooking the High Street and church, the bed linen, the bath, the delicious food, the service/staff and the calm energy of the dining room. Nicholas and Matt were most accommodating hosts and I'm fairly sure the beetroot starter on the feasting menu is one of the loveliest things I've eaten all year. I can be a critical and difficult guest after years of feeling ripped off by various high-profile hotels and/or restaurants, but I simply do not have one criticism of Holm and can safely say it is the best value for money (as far as hospitality goes) in memory. I hope to return very soon.

I would ignore M/S Happinness review, only ever posted one review what do they know? The meal we had here was great, £59 tasting menu was amazing value, served by lovely friendly staff in a buzzy dining room. We slept upstairs in one of the newly appointed rooms which was lovely. Will definitely return….. only 4 stars as food could have been hotter.

Limited lunch menu might have been perfect on another day but today was restrictive. Portions were small and value was very poor for the price asked. The stripped interior had little ambiance and the seating must have come from a Junior school, being uncomfortable for adults. We wanted to support local restaurant businesses but local pubs offer a far better experience.

It’s taken a long time for us to find a date to get to Holm but oh my, it was worth the wait. The food, the wine, the service, all impeccable. Almost regret leaving it for so long. it was great value for the quality of the food and drink. We had a discount code from the newsletter which made this incredible value for money. I would happily have paid the full price (and more) for the food we ate and the drinks we drank. The Twinkle cocktail was a perfect aperitif.

Beautiful setting, amazing food. Everything we had was fantastic. Beef and blue cheese croquettes, ricotta agnolotti, sea bass with sides of hispi cabbage and potatoes followed by apple choux and chocolate cremate. All amazing and packed with flavour. Top spot for lunch or dinner. Highly recommended. Passionate chefs really shines through.
