I caught a cockroach on my seat's backrest with a napkin and handed it to our server prior to ordering our meal. They apologized. We were initially hesitant, but proceeded with ordering the lamb biryani, idli, and drinks. The food was good, service prompt, we paid the full price and tipped normally at the end of our meal (it was our decision to stay, despite what has happened). No compensation was offered. Our server assured us that the cockroach is a one-off incident. We hope it will be addressed. Needless to say, we will not be back anytime soon.

We have been wanting to try Lungi after being fans of Imli, and my husband and I finally made a reservation. We went early on a Saturday, so it wasn't too busy. Don't be afraid to use the call button for service! After waiting a while ready to order, the server came over and helped us pick our meals. I ordered a mocktail, the guava lemonde which i had to stop myself from downing in one go it was so good! I also ordered the Kerala Beef Chukka from the small plates. It was excellent, though a little on the spicy side for me, but i powered through since the flavors were delightful. It came with a flat, flaky bread (not sure the name of it) to dip into it with. My husband ordered the Kori Ghassi, which was also on the spicy side, but delicious. We also got a hopper each, one plain and one egg. By the time we left it was getting busy and I can see the issue others have had in regards to the service, but if youre not in a hurry, I just say enjoy! I really loved the music too. Will return soon.

Bunch of us went to Lungi for dinner on New Year’s Eve and it was probably one of my fondest memories of the year. The food was authentic and managed to capture the essence of each region/community it was from. We loved the appetizers so much that we ordered it thrice! Cocktails were outstanding too! But the biggest props goes to the team at Lungi. The staff were incredibly kind and patient with such a great sense of humor. The service was personal and we felt connected to the food and the team at Lungi. Shoutout and love to the owner, wait staff, and the kitchen. Lungi would be perfect for a private dinner or an intimate party! The outdoor seating area gives you the best of both. 12/10 will come back for more! ♥️

This was probably the most stressful dining experience I've ever had. The food was good, but there weren't many Sri Lankan dishes on the menu. It was also overpriced—$14 for three idlis and $8 for one egg hopper. There was a long wait just to order; it was very disorganized and chaotic. The portion sizes are small for what they charge you for. Once we finished eating, they quickly took our plates and cutlery away, making us feel rushed. At one point, the hostess told us to leave because she needed the table ASAP and there were people waiting but we had just ordered dessert. She apologized afterwards, but it made everyone feel uncomfortable. We were also seated by the entrance, so we could clearly see that no one was waiting for a table. So she lied to kick us out. The servers were always rushing, and one nearly crashed into us twice so that was fun. When it was time to pay, they forgot our masala chai, and we overheard the server scolding another server about it. At that point, we didn’t even want the chai anymore, but our server insisted we take it. Then, he stood over us while my friend drank it. In our rush to leave, we quickly paid the bill on the mobile POS, but the server was watching us and even scrolled through the bill, not allowing us to adjust the tip amount. Overall, it was just a bizarre experience, and I won’t be coming back.

Such a flavor explosion and loved the higher spice level and different sauces used to cook the dishes. The staff was super helpful in their suggestions on our order as we were vegetarian. The cauliflower and mushroom starter and the jackfruit and Kuttu paratha were exceptional! Would highly recommend if you like your food on the spicer side. That said the coconut curry and idliappams were a perfect accompaniment if you wanted to tone down your spice level. The staff was beautifully dressed in traditional Lungis and very attentive .

Good vibe and good food. Nice place for a party of 10+. Service was a bit slow. I am really not a fan of using artificial colors in the food however, I understand that it makes the food quite authentic however, they need to come up with ways to find alternatives and still make the final outcome of the dishes look and taste authentic.

Had gone to this location back when it used to be Imli. Ever since I saw this new place come up, I've been meaning to try it. Decided to go here for lunch with my out-of -town friend, and we both loved it! He had the Masala Dosa and got a Veg Kothu to-go and I had the very well-made Chicken Kothu. Simple cooking with clean flavors that reminded us of food from back home. So 10/10 for nailing the flavor profile. Edit: Visit #2 was very dissapointing. Booked a table for dinner. It was 1st of Jan and the restaurant was quite full. We were seated at the back at a corner table and the minute we were seated i felt like this table was going to be ignored like how I ignore my fitness. We waited a long time to get the menu card and it was another long wait to have the people take our order. We ordered the Malabar Porota and Kori Ghasi (chicken curry). The food took forever to come but was good. The flavors were amazing. We also ordered the Hopper (which is basically an appam) and it was raw!! We sent it back and waited another 15 mins to get a fresh hopper. Again, food wise we were happy but the service was very very unsatisfactory. Reducing the rating because of this appalling experience.

Highly highly recommend! Lungi is an incredible new restaurant in the Upper East Side, featuring absolutely phenomenal authentic South Indian and Sri Lankan food. The vibes are great, the service and staff is awesome and super friendly, the drinks are very uniquely South Indian/Sri Lankan, and the food is absolutely top notch. It just recently won the Bib Gourmand award from Michelin, very well deserved, and would expect it to win many more. The food and experience absolutely rivals (some dishes even top) the food at the other famous South Indian places in Manhattan. Overall 10/10 experience! Have been here 3 times now, and we haven't had a single bad drink or dish. And each time the service and the experience are phenomenal. Nice ambience. Three different seating zones. Good friendly staff. We sat in the patio section which is nice and spacious and fully closed/heated. We think this place has some great flavours in their roasts and curries. I don't usually eat meat but will try occasionally. One of the things I and my wife agree on was that their meat (goat and chicken) were not fresh. They were too dry which is a sign of being frozen and/or over cooked. More likely they were just not fresh. The flavours were amazing but when meat is dry it's harder to eat. We couldn't finish either of our dishes I would strongly encourage this place to use fresh products as it will really propel the experience and food to astronomical heights.

Walked in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and the place was relatively busy. Staff was kind enough to get me seated even though they were about to close the restaurant for afternoon. What was formerly Imli is now Lungi, and I believe it is the same team, but with a more South Indian and Sri Lankan forward menu. Fresh look too - new interiors, brighter decor, and a good patio seating. Sri Lankan food good us excited and we ordered Vegetarian Kothu ($22), Kerala Mutton Stew (27), and Plain Dosa ($15) for our little one. Cocktails are mixed by their partner, Vincent who was friendly enough to chat with us and also make a very good Old Fashioned! Food overall was good, although the Kothu did not live up to it's Sri Lankan standards (my reference being Sigiri on LES). Kothu was very roti forward and lacked the kind of roasted taste that I was expected. It was much more moist and didn't really have much flavor. The stew on the other hand was flavorful and tasted better the next day! Service was excellent, and the menu is slightly on the pricier side. Definitely worth a visit for their South Indian menu and cocktails. Will visit again with friends and family!

Great initiative to bring some Sri Lankan food to the table, cute place with good service. However, if you are looking for authentic sri lankan food this may not be the place to go. We ordered the egg hopper, lamb kottu and mutton rolls. Kottu was very mushy and lacking flavor, egg hopper was cold and stiff and for a whopping $9 dollars for one egg hopper it was definitely not worth the price. Mutton rolls were crispy but again lacking flavor and actual mutton in the roll. Manager was willing to serve us another dish instead but we chose not to get anymore to not be disappointed any further.

I had an extremely disappointing experience with this restaurant. The day before I was scheduled to start my shift as a bartender, I received a text message from them informing me that I should not come in because they had found someone with "better experience." No phone call, no apology—just an unprofessional, impersonal text message. This lack of professionalism and respect for my time was shocking, especially after I had made plans and was prepared to begin working there. It's clear they don't value their staff or communicate with any regard for courtesy. I won't be pursuing any future opportunities with this place, and I highly suggest others avoid it if you want to be treated with respect.

This is a Tamil restaurant. It did not feel sri Lankan by any means! With that said, the food was insanely greasy and we felt queasy after we had it. The stipulation that we couldn't share the banana leaf thali did not make any sense, especially at the 45$ price point and somehow we could share if we got another entree! For shame!! It wasn't clear to us what the difference between a banana leaf special meal and a regular thali was other than a 25$ difference in price. The service was dearly lacking in that we weren't told what we'd get in the banana leaf thali, and we ended up ordering the polichi kozhi, which featured in the thali anyway (this item is probably the quickest way to a heart attack on planet earth. If it were any more oily the US would have invaded it!!) The thali itself was mediocre. The fish entrees were poor. There was no parotta included. All the curries tasted the same. The vegetarian options fared slightly better than the non vegetarian options. The only thing that probably stood out was the yogurt that came with the thali. We will not be returning to this one as we left with a puky feeling.

Lungi is a newly opened addition to NYC’s diverse food scene. With its vibrant dishes and welcoming space, it’s perfect for anyone looking to explore the flavors of South India and Sri Lanka. Stick to their signature dishes, and you won’t be disappointed! What Stands Out: Sunday Banana Leaf Thali: This traditional feast is a must-try, and I can’t wait to go back for it! Food Quality: The flavors are bold and authentic, offering a taste of South Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine without trekking to Queens. Spacious Dining Area: While the entrance feels compact, don’t be fooled—there’s a massive space in the back, making it ideal for group outings. Convenient Manhattan location, saving you a trip to Queens for similar cuisine. What I Tried: Podi Dosa: A standout dish—crispy, spicy, and absolutely FANTASTIC! Poricha Kozhi (Chicken Appetizer): A definite must-try. Kathu Roti: Flavorsome and hearty. Kari Dosa: Delicious and satisfying. Nandu Charu (Crab Soup): Unfortunately, this one didn’t live up to the rest—can be skipped. Drinks: The mango lassi, while enjoyable, had a hint of artificial flavoring. It’s still refreshing but not the most authentic take.

Agree with Wang below. Pushy manager when it came to choosing dishes. The lamprais, coconut milk, beet side dish, parotta, eggplant was SUPERB. Mediocre idli and very mediocre dosa with a tiny amount of Sambar which was weakz Coconut chutney on both occasions was just terrible. My friend had the veg thali meal. Not a good value for money for a thali meal. Few choices. No vegetables or anything substantial. A small cup of channa, a small cup of puzhi kolumbu, some rice and a small cup of rasam, yogurt. The parotta was excellent. Each tasted good but overall not a good value for money. Has great potential if they take customer feedback and make some course corrections.

But if you want to taste Sri Lankan fare I would recommend Sigiri or Staten island Sri Lankan food. Mutton rolls here are prob the only thing that taste good close to Sri Lankan. Being Sri Lankan , I will def not recommend this as authentic Sri Lankan it’s more of a South Indian influenced Sri Lankan ( hopper/egg hopper is extra large, their strong hopper is not the thin string hopper ). Got the weekend banana leaf non-veg meal. It included beef mutton, mutton rolls (my only favorite), baby shark, chicken, and veg curries. Also had white rice, chicken biryani, and ras malai. It was different from what I usually eat. I grew up eating mainly North Indian food. And when I eat Indian food, I usually eat veg because I feel Indian veg tastes better than Indian non-veg. I think I will try this place’s veg food in the future. But for the price, it’s kinda too expensive and I may go elsewhere for my comfort Indian food needs. Especially since I used to really like coming here for the old restaurant (Imli) and the dishes they had. Note: I see a lot of people with glowing reviews and say it tastes pretty authentic. So this also may just be my own preference.

The incompetence of this place angers me. We came in, excited to have hopper dosas, and then we asked and they said “no, only banana leaf meal.” We contemplated leaving but stayed to give it a chance. It took 30 minutes to get our original meals and it was good, just a massive amount of food. We couldn’t finish it. Anyway, it took an hour until we finally cracked. We ordered a idli and vegetable biryani, but it had not shown up! Like how long does a simple dish take to make! We left an hour after we came and the person who ordered the biryani and idli was left hungry. Crazy. The waiter was not listening to us even after we reminded them 3+ times to get the food. Great experience at the restaurant. Came here a lot when it was Imli and digging the Sri Lankan revamp. Great food and service!

The Southern Indian and Sri Lankan dishes were a delicious discovery. We loved the richness of the flavor as well as the spiciness. The hopper were an excellent way to pick up the food and were tasty in their own right.

Lungi has the kind of food that makes you want to come back, but the service is so painfully inept that it turns the whole experience sour.

Food was amazing however they were severely short staffed which lead to severe delay with service. However the staff tried their best and was courteous. food was worth the wait.

We just ordered for pickup to try the new pivot to Sri Lankan food, and received the best service we have had all year. Béla provided us with INCREDIBLE drinks and absolutely made the experience memorable. We will be back because of his amazing service and welcoming attitude. He is one of a kind and makes an incredible negroni. The food was delicious as well (Kori Ghassi was the standout.) Would appreciate larger portions in the future, maybe double up on the Parathi and add slightly more Kari to each dish. Wishing you the best of luck in the future. We will be back often and tell our friends to come as too.

Finally!!! A coastal Indian food (and yes, Sri Lankan) restaurant in Manhattan! We have an endless amount of North Indian, Tamilian, and fusion (e.g. Indian Accent, Baar Baar, etc) restaurants in the city. I’ve been dreaming of having good Kerala food here for years. So happy to have randomly discovered this wonderful place yesterday. Great service and everything we had (Pepper Yera Varuval, Eggplant Moju, and Kori Ghassi with both rice and hoppers) was delicious! Will definitely be back.

Can't say enough amazing things about Lungi! As a Sri Lankan, I can 100% vouch for the authenticity and taste of the food!!! Honestly feels like I'm back at my parents home for a home-cooked meal. The Kothu roti is delicious and not soggy or doused in curry, the lunch special leaves you completely content! I went with my non-Sri Lankan friends and the described the flavors as bold but are not overwhelmingly spicy, just the perfect balance! Will definitely be a regular moving forward!!! Thanks for doing Sri Lankan cuisine justice and sharing it with the rest of NYC!

Fantastic food! Perfect blending of flavors! I am obsessed with this restaurant, I go at least 3 times a week! The chef Sathish Raj accommodates my personal tastes every time. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxing. The waitress Afreen not only is personable but also very attentive and eager to please the customers. The manager, Vasani, is a unique jewel, with his personal recommendations and social expertise. The Garlic Naan is cooked to perfection, and I order it every time! Definitely try Chicken Tikka Masala, Murg Korma, and Goat Curry: their sauces are so exquisite that you will become addicted as well. I am so happy that I have found the best Indian restaurant in my neighborhood!

Superb taste with menu choices to suit any palate served by an attentive staff in a relaxing environment make Imli a triple threat for a great night out. The drink pour is also incredibly generous and reasonably priced. My recommendation is the vegetable samosa to start and the chicken murgh korma entrée. The Naan choices are also can't miss.

We had a great meal at Imli in their enclosed patio area, which they happily opened up for us when we asked. The service was friendly and very competent, and the food was excellent. They also had some dishes that we love that we don't generally see at restaurants (eg the lachha paratha and the dal tadka, both of which i heartily recommend). This was great and I will definitely be back when I can.

Today (10-Aug-2024) we went to Imli for dinner for 15 people and they did an absolute amazing job from food to service! They greeted us, they gave us the seating we wanted, they made sure our food came out on time, they made sure everyone had everything they needed, they took pictures for us, and were extremely attentive! The food was delicious such as the cauliflower Manchurian, ragda pattice, tandoori shrimp, kollam beef curry, goat biriyani! We thoroughly enjoyed their food and service! Thank you very much Imli!

The best Indian food I have ever eaten and fantastic service. We arrived at the restaurant soaking wet due to a sudden downpour. The manager Sathish Raj personally welcomed us in a very friendly manner and handed us towels and even a dry T-shirt. The overall service during the meal was also uniquely good. We had three different types of curry. Everything was delicious and freshly prepared. Raj was always very helpful. My son's milk intolerance was also no problem at all. The kitchen had a good solution for this. The IMLI is definitely recommended! The prices are very reasonable! The whole stuff-team was very polite. We will definitely come back!

Today I visited Imli, expecting a delightful Indian dining experience, but unfortunately, the chicken curry I ordered was a major letdown. The dish lacked the rich, bold flavors I anticipated; instead, it tasted bland and uninspired. The chicken was overcooked and dry, making it hard to enjoy. Moreover, the curry sauce was watery and lacked the depth of spices that is characteristic of a good chicken curry. I could hardly detect any of the traditional aromas that typically tantalize the senses. Overall, I left the restaurant feeling disappointed and unlikely to return for another meal. I hope they can improve their recipe as it has great potential!

I can't say enough on how amazing the food is! It took me back to my childhood. An Indian family lived below us and our families shared meals with each other. I was so happy to have that experience again when I took a bite into memory lane. I highly recommend your taste buds to enjoy themselves to a wonderful evening of flavor. 😋😋 Don't forget to ask for Anna; as her sweet personality and great recommendations of tasty dishes add to the experience. Buen provecho Bon appetit

The food is excellent and the service efficient. The decor is awful though and no atmosphere whatsoever. Was empty by 9pm Saturday night. The toilets are awful. Haven’t been updated in two decades. Mouldy, cold, peeling paint. This place would do so much better with a face lift
