Indian Ocean in York

My score would have been a full 5* if it hadn't been for one of the waiters who must have asked us at least 5 times if we were ready to order our mains, even though he could see we were not finished with our starters. I had to tell him in the end that I would let him know when we were ready. I know it was a Saturday and they need to turn tables but at least let people finish first.

Food is always of a high standard.

Fabulous all round experience. Food was exceptional and service was attentive and precise with different waiters knowing exactly what we ordered and what we needed. I had a Ghost Massala braving a very hot dish and was asked if I needed water or yogurt dip to cool, but chose beer. Dish was flavorful and full of chillis, veg and artistry. Kids had Korma and it was of the same caliber. Breads were light naans and not greasy chapatis. Not cheap (what is nowerdays) but exceptional in every way. Highly Recommended!

If I could have given this 0 stars, i would have! Ordered food for delivery and have to say it has to be the worst Indian food I have ever eaten as a takeaway! The paneer butter curry tasted of nothing. Totally bland and even paired with rice and salad was still bland! I couldnt even finish it all despite my best efforts. Seems the chef clearly has no idea of how to use spices in curries. Absolutely shocking. Definitely don't waste your money here. They clearly don't care about the quality of food they are serving.

I’m really disappointed with the Indian Ocean and sadly for the second time. We made a reservation for Christmas Eve weeks in advance but on the evening there was clearly a problem with their booking system, they’d overbooked and we joined a queue of people who had all arrived for a table reserved at the same time. What was really disappointing though was their customer service, or lack of it! The manager just busied himself with all the seated tables and ignored the problem, clearly hoping we would just go away, which we eventually did. There was no apology, explanation or offer of an alternative such as a rebooking for another night or a takeaway. We left after 20 minutes of standing in the foyer, being ignored and feeling really let down by a restaurant we have been visiting for 10 years. Sadly won’t be going again.

Tasty food and good delivery time. There was an issue with our order (wrong item sent through) but this was promptly rectified.

Two of us were placed at a table 2 from the kitchen door with delivery collection people charging in and out. Music was so.loud we couldn't hold a conversation without shouting. Our starter arrived before we had finished the popadom (we had one popadom each!) then we had to wait 40 minutes for our Main course while the takeaway deliveries were thundering past us. Main course was OK, but we asked to take home what we couldnt eat (we'd had enough of being there). I could not believe it when the waiter brought out the aluminium dishes and told us to put our food into them ourselves. I felt humiliated. Will we go back? No.

The order was over 30 minutes late and the food was cold. The food was very oily with a poor consistency and just didn’t taste right.

The food is always delicious!😋 I have to watch what spicy food I eat but I like a bit of spice, the Chicken Darjeeling is perfect as the meat is marinated to make it a bit more interesting and the sauce is tasty but mild to balance it.

Ordered tandoori chicken and they give me half of chicken totally different to what i ordered, so rang up to complain came with tandoori chicken and it was absolutely disgusting the sauce was not creamy it was so spicy definitely not tandoori chicken and got onion Bhaji they taste rang like they was burnt left in to long n well over priced definitely won’t go back there

Stopped in with a mate for some food and it was delicious. Had the Arkan Gosht, the lamb was perfect, the sauce was flavourful with a huge spice hit. My friend had a Tikka Masala with the spice level dialed up to Madras level. His requests regarding the sauce were met with professionalism and he got exactly what he asked for. Absolutely fantastic service and we left very happy. Thank you.

Came quite quickly and was hot. Chicken was very tough and didn’t taste fresh, jalfrezi wasn’t spicy and everything was just pretty bland. Disappointed as it’s pretty expensive.

Good was amazing and very quick delivery. First time ordering and forgot item though. Bit disappointing. But it was only a drink. Will order again.

Ordered online got a message 10 minutes later saying ready. Live 2 minutes away collected to get home to pieces of lamb in hardly any sauce shocking amount anyway and nan bread stone cold no way it was cooked fresh pretty shocking tbh

Sent lemon rice with peas in no lemon in it was not what I ordered and portion size was is a joke like half a curry

Poor food, chicken tikka masala was only filled half way with sauce, rice was that cold you couldn’t even break it up was just in a block. Bag of chips looked like arrived half eaten, literally about 10 chips

Food is always great from here. Good value for money and large portions. I prefer a mild curry and the honey masala is the one for me, full of flavour and is perfect for my tastebuds.

After 2 hours our food hasn't arrived, the restaurant keep insisting it is 10 minutes away but that clearly isn't the case. Go elsewhere where customers are valued

Although delivered early and one meal was great unfortunately the other was poor £12.95 for 3 very overcooked Prawns it was like chewing rubber and 4 other pieces of meat. The vegetables were swimming in oil. Will not order this meal again but would still use the restaurant as had many many great meals before

Brilliant! The only reason I rated it a four was because the food took a little long. Then again they were probably making sure it was perfect. Anyway, the food was AMAZING. Good for all ages. But maybe don't have a starter as the mains are very filling. So overall, really nice. Wait, one more thing, it is a little bit expensive, but not too much.

Amazing food as always piping hot. Delivery driver super friendly. It said no delivery until 17:55, which I thought great. My husband will be back 18:00ish by the time he gets in & settled. Told delivery was going to be 18:10-18:30. The food came at 17:35ish. So we had to warm it up as our valentines treat.

chips were those skinny ones you get from McD's and got about as many of them as you'd get from that dreadful place. Curry was average, Chicken was tough. Last one I had from here was amazing, this one was awful. Been ordering here for years as it's mostly good but had so many bad ones now I give up. You should look after your regulars better 🤦‍♂️

The curry was poor, more onions than sauce! Made it dry which is a strange sensation for a curry. - gave me extra rice I didn’t order so had to leave it to waste.

Ordered an hour and a half ago and still no food after getting a notification saying it had been dropped off

Me and my girlfriend came here for a meal and they charged us for multiple things which we didn’t ask for. We only asked for 2 curries, 1 plain naan, 1 rice, 1 popadom and 2 drinks but they lied to us about the price of things for example they said the drinks were £6 each but came up to a total of £15.60 for 2 drinks and they also added an assorted pickle tray on to our order without us even mentioning one of them and they also made us pay for 2 naan bread even tho we asked for 1 and we also only asked for 1 popadom and they charged us for 2 and they told us we would get “discount” on the drinks but when we came to order they was actually more expensive which i find very sly as they have lied saying they would give us discount when they in fact charged us for more than we asked for. The staff was also very rude, and pressuring to make an order, almost walked out, felt as if this ruined our day out. Dirty toilets and cutlery, aswell as selling alcohol to underage people. Definitely something that could be taken to trading standards, MP, police or the local authority’s. Shouldn’t be happening at all it’s disgusting. No other local restaurants would give me this experience. Very disappointed. We got told it would be £33 not over £50

Overpriced, small portions, rude staff. Went in for a basic meal and cost over £60 for 2 people. Dirty. never coming here again

DO NOT GO HERE. Came here with my boyfriend at the start of this year. Not happy at all with the experience. Cowith discount from £62 w following items- sauce, 1 pilau rice, A chicken dansak, a madras, 2 very weak Malibu and Coke, 2 popadoms and 1 plain naan bread. In my opinion this is very overpriced, and we was told it would only be £33. The place was very crammed with dirty cutlery. And very pushy staff, almost made us leave before eating because every minute we would be asked at least twice if we was ready to order, we asked if we could tell them when we was ready however they kept coming over. Day light robbery. With small portions. And rude staff. would never ever reccomend to anyone, and will never go back. Chicken was also very fatty

This restaurant never checks the orders before they leave the building - ive given them second chances and they leave things out of the bag - and im talking main things not just a poppadum - lets the place down - dont do takeaways if you cant get the order right ' - their food is actually good if you get it

Very nice food and quite good portions

Been here for years and has been a firm favourite but unfortunately the meal quality has continued to deteriorate. Today's meal was the worst one yet, barely any meat (5 pieces of chicken in the whole dish), no paneer (Makhani used to come with huge chunks in), and thin, watery sauce. Used to be one of my fav meals but will be finding a new Indian for the future now

I ordered food for 7:15, it’s 7:40 & still hasn’t arrived. It was ordered over 2 hours ago - very poor service.

Been a customer for over 20 years, but after the last few takeaways we will stop using. Our most recent meal (Nov '23) was dreadful, the worst Indian food we've had anywhere. We had 5 curries. All had watery sauce in two thirds full containers. Meat quantity was ok, but it was like sauce from 1 meal had been diluted and split into 3, such was the consistency and lack of flavour and texture e.g. barely any visible tomato or onion in the Rogan and Bhuna. Basically chicken swimming in water. Even Korma was like milk and flavourless. We have Indian takeaway around once a month and will take Indian Ocean off our list. It's also more expensive than other options.

We order and visit this restaurant frequently, unsure why but our meals were not up to usual standard. Garlic chilli chicken Balti - sauce was very watery and the Shahi Shashlik Bhuna lacked any spice flavour

Staff is very nice. The food is delicious, everyone will find something for themselves.

i have never had any problems with this restaurant, but i ordered some popadoms this time and when they arrived the bag only had a few broken bits in it. i don’t know if this is the restaurant or drivers fault, but i wasn’t impressed this time round.

No problem with food, but delivery time was poor. Ordered around 19.05 with delivery time given of 20.00 to 20.20 Flagged late order at 20.30, received a reply stating 20.40 and order on way. Arrived at 20.50 However everything we ordered was hot and fresh so would order again and hope for a prompt delivery next time
