Jack and Linda Mills Traditional Fish Smokers in Brighton and Hove

We often come here and have, for reasons unknown, never thought about leaving a review. However, after yet another excellent freshly grilled mackerel ciabatta we decided that we must. The food and service from the Smoke House is second to none. It is always so tasty and fresh. A real pleasure to visit.

I've been here many times, had everything on the menu, and it has always been great. Delicious food, swift service, the people who run it could not be nicer, and my dog is always given a big fuss and some bits of mackerel. The perfect beachside lunch

This unassuming take-away on Brighton beach arches served us the tastiest lunch. Generous helping of crab meat with salad and chilli mayo all served on a fresh ciabatta roll. Delicious!

I had a crab sandwich which was wonderful. It was freshly made with plenty of tasty crab and fresh crispy salad. The price point was good and I would thoroughly recommend.

Brilliant, freshly smoked local fare on homemade bread… deeeelish! This little hole in the wall (well, that’s what it looks like from the outside, but don’t be fooled!) serves great fish sandwiches and the like, made with mostly local fish, all freshly prepared while you wait. It may take a moment longer, but it’s worth it. The staff are also super helpful with their recommendations, and know their grub. And, when you’re done, the Coffee Shop next door serves great coffee and EXQUISITE cinnamon rolls!

Freshly made smoke mackerel or kipper ciabatta rolls. I like mine with a smattering of horseradish. Great food, great location, great price....and the staff are absolutely lovely.

After a long walk I was really looking forward to a bite to eat! I’d been thinking about a sandwich stuffed so full of crab you almost needed a knife and fork. Food made to order, cheerful service, and a little oasis of calm on the sea front on a busy day. Perfect!

Mid May - cold day. Happened on this and thought it would be suitable for lunch. Super friendly and informative kiosk service. Very attentive and clear that she wanted us to mix and match to our own tastes.I had a crab salad with sweet chilli sauce in a warmed brown bun - divine!My wife had the smoked bream I think and proclaimed it to be amazing.Tables and chairs outside but just as easy to sit on the beach opposite enjoying the sea and the food.Thoroughly recommended.

Fantastic sandwiches and best potato puffs that I’ve ever eaten. Delicious smoked fish - generous portions and the friendliest staff you will ever meet. Great place to bring kids as something for everyone.

Cada vez que visitamos Brighton vamos a Jack & Linda's al menos una vez durante nuestra estadía, nos enteramos de que los propietarios originales se habían jubilado y nos preocupaba que los altos estándares pudieran haber cambiado. . . . pero afortunadamente fue fantástico. Los arenques ahumados en panecillos venían con ensalada y salsa tártara y estaban deliciosos y servidos por una señora muy alegre y amable. Estoy deseando volver. Muy recomendable, buena comida, buena relación calidad-precio.

Stumbled upon this little gem of a place whilst walking along the sea front. I’m not a big fish lover but it smelt amazing so we ventured in. I watched the last smoked kipper being cooked which I was gutted about but we opted for a smoked mackerel roll and a fish finger roll both served fresh with nice salad. Both were delicious!Excellent food and excellent service and great value. Thank you!

Día miserable en el paseo marítimo (demasiado frío / húmedo para tomar una foto), pero este lugar realmente nos animó. Visited at lunchtime and sat in the sun. Two years since my last visit but still fresh good hot food. Welcome addition of wraps to the menu - I had a hot kipper wrap and my friend a Smoked Mackerel pate.Wish this place was closer than 250 miles from home.. Thank you - food was spot on!

Having seen mixed reviews, since Jack and Linda retired, we checked the smokehouse out for ourselves. Yes the price has gone up a bit.£4.95 for a kipper roll. But could not fault the service or the quality. Compared to rolls and sandwiches in Brighton, still good value.Something different on a sunny day at the seaside!!!

I ate a lovely hot fresh mackerel roll on a sunny Tuesday here on the beach. The staff are very helpful and friendly, and bring out your order on a tray with napkins when it is ready. There is plenty of seating outside; I sat in the shade of an old fishing boat, which seemed very apt.

As others have said Jack and Linda have now retired we wish them well. Both my wife and myself have had crab or mackerel sandwiches over the years from here. We ordered a crab sandwich to take home for our tea, It was a sourdough roll! No problem. Put it in a cool bag to take home.Took the crab out at home, put it on buttered bread with some lobster and prawns we bought from another stall, had cup of tea with the sandwich brilliant very tasty.

Visité Smoke House en un ajetreado domingo de Brighton con mis 3 hijos pequeños. Mel y Ellie nos saludaron calurosamente y nos ayudaron a decidir nuestro pedido, brindándonos información útil sobre los platos disponibles. A mis hijas les encantó su menta blanca: recién preparada, crujiente y una porción muy generosa. Mi hijo y yo disfrutamos muchísimo de nuestra ensalada de caballa en un rollo - otra vez muy sabroso y recién cocinado. ¡Tampoco pudimos resistirnos a un par de porciones adicionales de paté de caballa ahumado casero! Sin duda volveremos.

Stumbled upon this gem on a visit from London. The staff were amazing, but the pate was something else. The best mackerel pate I've ever tasted. I went to sleep thinking about it, and woke up thinking about it, and went back for more.

Ayer comí un delicioso kipper caliente, pero Jack y Linda se retiraron y el precio subió 90 p. A 4. 70! Me atrajeron ya que el lugar se ve igual, todas las mismas señales afuera, incluyendo el nombre de Jack y Linda Mills. Me he estado metiendo por Kipper durante años y los precios han aumentado muy poco con los años. De hecho, tuve una conversación con Linda el año pasado sobre sus precios baratos en un paseo marítimo caro y ella dijo "tratamos de ser justos".

Ce petit cabanon propose des sandwichs de poisson et/ou seafood. La nourriture est généreuse, fraîche et peu chère. Très bien placée devant la plage, Jack et Linda ont ouvert cet établissement il y a une dizaine d’année après avoir passé toute leur vie à pêcher. Ils proposent aujourd’hui les meilleurs sandwichs au poisson de Brighton.

Nice hot kippers & mackerel baps, delicious soups. Good prices, no long waits, clean, and served by a lovely couple!

Compramos un par de bocadillos de cangrejo y no pudimos ni siquiera dar un mordisco. Olían a pescado podrido. Desafortunadamente, lo único que podíamos hacer era tirarlos. Raro que este lugar tenga excelentes críticas, esa es la razón por la que lo probamos. Vergüenza por el dinero desperdiciado y la comida desperdiciada.

Popped in here for a kipper roll and was initially disappointed to hear that Jack and Linda had retired, but the new owners are keeping up the high standards. Nice new roles and excellent kippers. Good attentive service. Everything is cooked fresh. Will be returning.....

Walking along the beach when we spotted Jack and Linda's so easily missed. Anyway we had Hot mackerel rolls which were sublime, will return to try more from there menu.

I really fancied kippers for brunch last Saturday and remembered this little gem on Brighton seafront. A great little traditional fish smokers, which is worth a visit even from those who might think that this type of place isn't worth seeking out, they will be pleasantly surprised.

Visited fo a sea front snack with daughter and grand daughter. On a day trip and walked along sea front and saw this interesting cafe my daughter and I ordered hot smoked Mckerel in a hot roll and my grand daughter had fried battered calamari Ed all were very tasty Ideal for a lunchtime snack and. very good value.

I visited Jack and Linda's shop at the end of July. The sandwich shop is traditional of the place which reflects the sea culture. I must say that I wasn't impressed with what I ordered which was fried calamari (see photo). I paid £ 5.50 for it and the taste wasn't good to be honest; it was a frozen product and the portion was small. However, I was told by one of the usual customers to try the kipper sandwich. I'll give it another try if I ever go to Brighton again. Jack and Linda are two lovely people, though!

Have been promising myself for far too long to eat here. Well, finally managed it today. Greeting from Jack & Linda was very friendly and the crab salad sandwich on brown was excellent. Sat outside tucking in happily and people watched, carefully keeping my sandwich covered to avoid seagull smash & grab! Must try the kipper in hot buttered roll next time. Highly recommended.

As a lover of local seafood, we headed to this little gem on our trip to Brighton for a lunchtime snack after seeing it on trip advisor.

This restaurant?takeaway is not easy to find, you could easily walk past it, but halt there! Please don't walk past it as you'll probably regret it if you are a fan of good wholesome fish dishes freshly caught and served impeccably well.

Paid just under a fiver for a crab roll with brown paste and average salad. Tasted ok but expected better. For that price should get tasty white crab meat and more of it! The prawn sandwich was also average

I would so much like to give this place five stars since the fish was super delicious but the breadrolls were moldy with blue dots. I think the place wasn't very clean either.

A great little place on the seafront that serves great food. It’s simple which is great as the fresh fish on offer is all the flavour you need and it’s all freshly prepared by the really friendly and welcoming couple that run the business. I’ve lost count of he number of visits I’ve made but every time it is excellent.

Best crab meat I have eaten in my life. We ended up trying many other things such us the crab claws, whitebaits, mackerel and they all tasted fresh and delicious. A place you must visit if you are in Brighton, you cannot miss it. Great staff, very welcoming and friendly.

When people ask me what I would not miss in Brighton, I will say the Brighton Smokehouse. "Authentic" does not begin to describe this place. Located in the brick spaces right next to the Fishing Museum along the waterfront, Jack and Linda (the owners) are frankly more modest than they should be. They have a smoked kipper sandwich that is absolutely phenomenal. Linda's comment was "we haven't changed it in 22 years." Why would they? It is heaven. Enjoy it while (inside) and looking at the photos of them 20 years ago christening their boat, catching the fish, and smoking it themselves.

We went here specifically for the brown crab meat sandwich mentioned by the food writer jay raynor; ended up having a bit of everything. My partner loved the sandwich and I tasted the crab claws, prawns etc.. and we sat on the sea wall in the sunshine and enjoyed ourselves. Its simple no frills down to earth good fresh food. The sea front isn't the best for food in brighton, but this little place is worth hunting down.

Teeny and friendly. We had kipper, mackerel and whitebait to share- all so fresh and glorious. Best hot sandwiches on the beach! Lots of choice for eating there or taking home- wish we lived closer! So glad we visited before they shut shop for Christmas.

Este es un lugar que mucha gente simplemente pasará por y no aviso. Es un negocio familiar y es el pescado fresco capturado diariamente. Es genial para parar, comprar un delicioso sándwich de cangrejo o salmón ahumado y de estar algo en la pared mirando el mar o personas caminando. Lo recomiendo encarecidamente y debe ser visitado al menos una vez en cualquier viaje a Brighton.

Visited on a scorching bank holiday Monday for kipper roll, fish soup and deep fried crab claws... Really great food, especially the kipper roll. Utmost respect to the owners who were working their absolute socks off in the heat. Highly recommended if you're after proper local offerings.

One can locate this small outfit among the shops lining the Brighton Beach. The elderly couple is polite, and as other reviewers have recommended, the fish stew is good and inexpensive (at 3gbp/cup).

Was just passing and saw Fresh Smoked Mackerel Pate on their chalk board...they smoke their own fish so I had to pop in, in fact they have so much more and I would recommend giving them a visit as my pate was wonderful and Linda brought it out on a tray to me.....yummy.......

Strolling along the sunny seafront, we spotted this little gem and bought hot mackerel rolls from the lovely couple, Jake and Linda. Oh it was so fresh and tasty! For the fish lovers out there, you would be crazy to turn your nose up at those beauties. Definitely will visit again :)

I popped into a Brighton institution yesterday for a fresh mackerel roll. It was delicious and had a chat with Jack and Linda mills who have met stars and politicians who have popped into thier shop. This is a must see place to eat and experience before they retire, Such a friendly couple with many stories and the food is fresh ans delicious

Jack and Linda were a friendly couple. Dressed crab was a little too dry for my liking but fish soup, smoked mackerel and anchovies were delicious.

Great wee place on the beach to enjoy fresh seaside flavours. I had plaice goujons in a crusty roll, like a posh fish finger roll and my boyfriend had a crab salad sandwich. Son muchos paseando por la costa de Hove a Brighton pero , por aquellas cosas de la vida , nunca habíamos podido parar a degustar los ahumados de este clásicoGazpacho por 2,50 libras , refrescante hacía mucho calor aunque algo extraño para lo que estamos acostumbrados (el tipo de tomate , no está licuado , hay tropezones ) pero bien Sandwich de cangrejo ,para probarlo y poco más pero el de Kippers merece la visita , por el tipo de pan ( bollo , no de molde ) y el arenque hecho al momento

The this is going I'm going to have to move here! This smokehouse run by a retired fisherman and his wife is the best ever, my husband is so happy that he was able to eat a kipper! May seem strange but he finds the ones you get in the supermarket are soggy and this one was just as a kipper should be, hot and dry and tasty in a hot buttered bun... he and i ate every mouthful and were very happy indeed! The kippers are smoked on a little smoke house right opposite the cafe which is in one of the arches on the beach front.. you can't go wrong!!!

For my lunch, Jack prepared a hot kipper sandwich for me in a crusty white roll - absolute heaven. And for just £3.80! I came back later in the day for a plate of anchovies with fresh lemon which was also delicious. Jack and Linda Mills are friendly and really understand customer service. In stark contrast to the many tacky and overpriced outlets within Brighton, this place is a delight.

We are regulars and absolute fans of this tiny smoke house kept by Jack and Linda Mills for over 17 years in Brighton. What could be better than a lightly buttered hot bun with home smoked fresh kipper!?Sandwiches, fish soup, salads and snacks - simply too good to miss. The hosts (hard to call them owners as they are so sweet and welcoming) are a charming couple and two massive characters. The best of traditional British food!

My good friend recommended to try this place and I'm so glad I did! You can get a sandwich or hot food plus some snacks here all made to order in front of you by a lovely couple who also are also the owners of the shop. The only difficulty was to chose what I wanted because everything looked really delicious! So if you fancy something instead of classic fish&chips, this place is a must to visit when in Brighton! Delicious, fresh and not too expensive or overcrowded with tourists. Loved it!

Visited here just after Christmas a lovely cup of tea the best you will get down on the beach and only £1, the mackerel roll was very nice and fresh. The only problem was the fish soup was not very nice my wife loves fish soup and she couldn't even eat it.
