Jiji in Islington

Jiji successfully combines and modernises the best traditions of two cultures- Japanese and Mediterranean - to create an outstanding and distinctive cuisine. The food ranges from excuisite sushi to subtle tasty vegetable dishes (the cauliflower is an unlikely triumph). You could describe it as ‘fusion’, but so much lazy nonsense takes that label, and Jiji is on another level. The wines and cocktails are also superb. All of this happens in a modern Japanese take on an Art Deco dining room. (Don’t miss the monkeys in the loos - it’s all a bit White Lotus). On the basis of several visits, Jiji is hugely enjoyable and thoroughly recommended.

Overpriced for the quality and what it is. Essentially going for a tapas vibe, very much felt that saying each dish arrives when it arrives is an excuse for the food taking a really long time to arrive. When it does arrive, whilst nice, the quality really doesn't live up to the price tag (except the chicken karaoke, that was a stand out dish). The kushiaki duck was a bit tough, the veg gyoza fell apart as you tried to lift them, the baby chicken was just cooked so had that slightly unpleasant texture with wet skin. The flat breads were nice but again not worth the cost, the broccoli we ordered with the baby chicken was broccoli. The large plate lamb was nice but didn't come with anything and again didn't merit the £26 price tag. Staff were good, attentive without being overbearing and the bar staff knew their drinks and could converse on the various saki and drinks. It was a pleasant meal but won't be returning as really the meal should have been a third cheaper than it was.

Stay away from this restaurant. They charge an exorbitant amount if you don’t cancel your reservation. Problem is they don’t answer their phone and the email given is undelivered and goes unanswered. No

I came here with my girlfriend for an anniversary dinner and left very satisfied. We had the honey marinated steak as a main and tried different small plates, the chicken and flatbread were top quality and the chocolate and marshmallow dessert was to die for. Staff is very polite and they have a free service to hang coats, the only minor drawback is it is a bit on the pricey side.

I tried to go to JiJi with a friend. We wanted a cocktail and sushi. We were told that we could only have alcohol if we ordered a main dish and sushi, however large the quantity is not a main dish. Tell that to the Japanese! It was quite early so all we wanted was a drink and sushi. We left. What a bizarre policy!!!
