Lovely evening, staff and atmosphere very welcoming. Our group had prawn risotto, seafood pasta, pizza and pork tenderloin all very nice. I had tiramasu for dessert which was rather disappointing, more like a mousse and lacking flavour, but others were raving about their sticky toffee pudding. I would definitely recommend and would visit again but I would choose a different dessert.

Restaurant is in the centre of Helmsley, the food was good, classic Italian - spaghetti bolognese, Con, vongole, arrabiata . Our visit was spoiled by a table of 10-12 women who were so loud I couldn’t hear my tables conversation. We couldn’t chat until they left. The party were rude and inconsiderate of other diners. Even the staff were relieved when they left. We couldn’t move tables as they were booked. This was at 6.30 pm! Will return to give the restaurant another try.

We had a couple of recommendations for this place from friends about the food so we gave it a try and we weren't disappointed. Our friends said it wasn't a cheap place, so we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived to see they had an early bird offer of £18 for 3 courses between 5pm and 6.30pm so we opted for that. The food was really good and they were proper sized portions. You don't have all the menu choices on the early bird, but there is plenty to choose from. I had the crispy squid (yummy), The fennel sausage ragu with linguine (delicious) and the Creme brulee (gorgeous). The staff were friendly and found us a table even though we hadn't booked. I would say that if you plan a visit, I would advise you to book, as when we were there people were phoning up all the time making bookings. We look forward to visiting Helmsley again so we can go and try something else off the menu!

A tale of two dishes. My partner had a steak - the flat iron steak requested medium rare - it came medium rare and was good. The usual french fries from the freezer accompanied and were also good. I had a 'special' - Porchetta. My experience of porchetta has in the past at other places been very good. Crispy crackling around soft moist pork. Oh dear not this time. What was on my plate was a ring of belly pork skewered like a Cumberland sausage to keep it in a ring. Cooked on each side so the meat was dry and tough, the fat unrendered and the skin like very chewy leather. Very disappointing. Should have sent it back or said something. At least my jaws had a serious work out. With some French fries it cost more than £20. This restaurant is clearly well liked - it was packed and gets good reviews. Perhaps just stick to pizza or pasta!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Largely, the food was good, although the veg bowl was 80% potato. The decor was getting a bit tired and the menus seemed battered. The staff were lovely, but perhaps a bit inexperienced/unknowledgeable about what they sold. Be advised, if you order soda, they'll charge you £2 a pint. They don't have it from a soda gun, but don't always remember to tell you. If you order soda and they don't tell you it comes in bottles, and they don't bring the bottle over - don't pay for it. -------------------------------------------- Additional edit in response to the owner's reply below - which probably tells you a lot about the owner and their ignorance of what's required. -------------------+++++------------------ You ask me to explain to you, so I shall: If I order a pint of soda water from a soda dispenser and you don't have one, that's fine, but you have to say that you only sell it in bottles. Then you need to bring me the bottle of sparkling water you're selling me, not just a pint from it. Even if you did have a post-mix dispenser, I'd expect to pay for soda water if it was my only drink, after all, there are overheads. Although I would expect the serving staff to say something along the lines of 'we charge 50p for a glass of soda water, would you like me to get it?' However, as I pointed out politely to your staff, we spent almost as much on drinks as I had on food. 4 glasses of wine, a pint of lager and a brandy. As a licensed establishment, you are legally required to provide tap-water free-of-charge. So the only extra cost you would incur from providing fizzy water from a soda-gun over tap water is the cost of the carbon-dioxide used to carbonate the water. Fractions of a penny. Sadly, at this point your bar staff pointed out that they needed to charge for the soda, because it came from bottles. I pointed out that I hadn't been informed of that when I requested soda from a post-mix gun and therefore couldn't be expected to pay for it. If I'd been told, I would have changed my order. So I wouldn't say I was upset at all. I just pointed out that I was either being over-charged for soda from a soda-gun or that I was being billed for something I hadn't ordered. I asked for £4 to be removed, still leaving a £90 tab, which we paid with apologies for the confusion and compliments to the staff and food. As for the ice, made with water that you pay for, I specifically asked for no ice, but it came with it anyway and I had to fish it out. Water from a soda gun comes cold enough without it. If you're truly aimed on cutting costs, that might be one place you can focus your efforts. It feels like this may not be the first time you've had a discussion like this, and given your response, maybe you should examine your behaviour towards your staff. If they're feeling intimidated, it may be down to you. Certainly, in the bars and restaurants that I've worked in, it has been the temperament of the owner/manager that sets the tone of the establishment. I absolutely agree that serving staff should be treated with respect and kindness. We should probably be a bit more respectful of the police force's time but on the other hand they might enjoy a laugh. Good luck with the franchise.

Booked for a table for 4 on a Sunday evening at 6pm. Restaurant was pretty busy, and deservedly so! Food was delicious - everyone had something different (Pizza, Lasagna, Carbonara and Linguini) and it all came together, piping hot and super tasty. Service was friendly, prompt and happy to deal with some small requests we had. The only downside, and it's being harsh, was the table for 4 we were seated at was a little snug - we had some taller people in our party and there was a bit of a leg room squeeze. To be fair we probably could have asked to be moved, but it wasn't a huge issue and it was busy. Atmosphere was pleasant - as mentioned a lot of people were in so it was a little loud, but it was people having a good time rather than overly loud ambience music so can't complain about that. Would definitely visit again.

Sadly let down . Been coming here for years. And we felt tonight we were just a nuisance. Number one advised the manager of allergies at our table. Some quite serious ones and she dismissed us and made a bit of a humping sound as if to say oh this is a pain , we seemed like we were a burden to her. Next week my almost 18-year-old daughter asked for a small glass of wine as per government guidelines and showed the waitress her legal driving license. This was knocked back. And told this doesn’t exist. I immediately went onto the government website and it still illegal thing, that you can have a drink with a parent guardian over the age of 18 if you are eating a meal. My daughter was humiliated and actually left the restaurant for 15 min as was made to feel a full. My daughter then asked for a Diet Coke. a full Coke arrived. We then had to go to the bar to ask for the Diet Coke. Then we had to clear our own glasses from the table as they were continually ignored but stacking up. They spent about 10 minutes on the floor at first before I took them and placed them on the bar next to the manager and she just made a bit of a noise. we didn’t leave a tip, our table was cold, in a draught , very small, very wobbly. Food wasn’t as good as it was. Back to the dietary issue. The person in question was served their meal with one of the allergens on top of the dish. We could not believe what we saw. we will not be back. And we normally spend a lot of money in your establishment.

We live locally and have visited La Trattoria many times, usually an enjoyable experience. My son is over from America and has a special birthday. I booked a table for 4 to celebrate and informed them upon booking that it was a celebration. All 4 of us were crammed on a table suitable for 2 which was too small for all the plates/glasses etc. We ended up putting our drinks on the windowsill and dado shelving. Part of the starters we ordered was the Antipasti sharing platter at £19.95. The menu stated it contained grana padana cheese amongst other items...this was missing!! My son had the lasagna, oh dear!! Portion put in a dish, very dry, claggy and overcooked!! My seafood linguine was definitely not to the standard I've had before here. Extremely peppery and lacking in seafood selection!! I don't normally write reviews like this but we were extremely dissapointed and the celebration fell flat. We will be giving La Trattoria a miss I think!!

Went last night 4/8. Staying at the Black Swan. We weren't going to make the mistake of eating there again so booked the Trattoria. Not to sound like a w...ker but just back from our annual break in Italy we tried to manage our expectations of this provincial Yorkshire Italian. Still, was looking forward to it. My mistake, when "the boss" visited table with his automatic, not actually caring, perfunctory "is everything alright "guys" I answered in the required British way: "Yes, thanks". But it really wasn't. Starter was as well as expected. Crispy Squid. Bits of squid deep fried in batter. Simple but basic yum. Secondary problem: my seafood linguini. The menu promised a festival of diferent species of shellfish. What I actually got was about 3 miniscule bits of clam (many many empty clamshells) and miniscule shrimp doing the heavy lifting. Essentially nothing else. NOT what the menu led me to believe. The sauce was viciously overpowering in its tomato sharpness. Primary problem: my partner ordered the carbonara. Our waiter offered her parmesan. I asked for some too. At which point the waiter (estimated age 17,) turned to me, nudging 60 and said - incredibly pretentiously - "are you sure? Parmesan on linguini?" A message for that young man - Yes!! I was f...g sure or else I wouldn't have asked. That is what I wanted. And i am the customer. Cheese & tomato paired? Hardly groundbreaking. I only wished I'd put more on - would've taken the edge off the overpowering tomato sauce: have a word with yourself lad - it's a wee restuarant in Helmsley. HE, with that arrogance, spoiled a mildly disappointing dining experience. Wish I'd been less British and opened my mouth at the time.

On a day visit to beautiful Helmsley on one of the hottest days of the year we decided to try this lovely looking Italian for dinner at 6pm. We chose a table overlooking the market square, on such a nice evening, but while waiting, had to clean it and were disgusted by the amount of litter under the tables and around the front of the restaurant! There is a label stuck to the table saying only food and drink purchased from the restaurant could be eaten here and think the tables and chairs are used even when the restaurant is closed, hence the litter, but there were a couple of empty plastic clothing bags from the market earlier in the day annoyingly blowing around and around underneath the tables! We sat patiently and thought a waiter would come soon to attend to us or at least sweep area/clean up but no! Surely this should be done before it opens again in the evening or certainly as guests arrive/sit at tables! There was only one other table occupied and being attended to at the time so as the waiter went in and out we called him over to ask for the menu. This took another 5 minutes and when he finally came gave he told us we would have to go inside to order! This is not the case inside the restaurant and wondered why the difference? Furthermore, we had to pay upfront which was not our usual experience of dinner ordering, where you may want to add drinks or a dessert later! When our food arrived, although tasty, was too pesto dependent as both my dishes were smothered in the stuff! Also cutlery came after the dishes, not before. The pizza was adequate and the rose wine was nice but the whole experience could have been so much better if there was more attention to detail. The restaurant was obviously popular as it soon filled up and people were turned away but sadly, we won’t be returning and wonder if the owner/staff have become too complacent with the numbers and less bothered about us, the customer? By the way, I caught the plastic bags and put them in the bin a couple of metres away from our table 👍

I was in Helmsley for the Yorkshire MAG Farmyard Party at Duncombe Park, an annual motorcyclists' event that this year attracted around 4500 attendees. As well as catering for our patrons onsite we encourage them to use the pubs and restaurants to put some money into the local economy. We've been using Duncombe Park most years since 1994, and enjoy a good relationship with the Duncombe Park estate and townsfolk. I went down into town for my breakfast on the Sunday morning of the event and selected la Trattoria which was open early. It's a nice, clean, well-cared-for venue. The staff were smartly attired, polite, friendly, and efficient. I ordered a full English breakfast and two pots of tea, one to drink while I was waiting for it to cook, and one to come with it when it was ready. The breakfast was large, cooked perfectly, and fair value at £13.50. My only complaint concerns the tea, The first pot was served in a teapot with a metal lid. metal conducts heat so the contents soon went cold. Also, the cups were the shallow type with a large diameter which makes for a large surface area, which also makes the te cool faster. The cups weren't as bad as some I've had at other places, which can be more like small soup bowls with handles, but they weren't good. I asked if they had any mugs instead? Nope. The first pot was luke-warm at best when it arrived, which meant it wasn't very strong either, the water being too cold to activate the teal eaves properly. When it was time for the second pot I asked the waitress to make sure it was boiling, and to be fair she did, and the teapot was a different type that kept the heat in better, but I was still stuck with the lousy fast-cooling cups. So that's it. C'mon folks, you're in Yorkshire. We like our tea hot and strong. It ain't the Japanese Tea Ceremony you're doing! Get yourself some decent heat-retaining teapots and some proper mugs and I'll happily return. At £3.50 a pot though I expect it hot and strong, not cold and weak. We're not softy southerners in Surrey!

Would normally leave a glowing review but following the menu change from April my friend and I won’t be returning again for breakfast (unless it changes again). To make others aware when going for breakfast you can’t ‘modify’ anything on the menu or order any sides. We wanted to add bacon to our poached egg and avocado on toast which we’ve never had an issue with before and now it’s not possible. It’s also not an option to order sides AT ALL which we found shocking considering hash browns only come with the full English, we wanted some on the side. Was disappointed as what we ordered could’ve easily been made at home and that’s not why you go out for food. It was also very slow and server wasn’t able to give alternative options for food. Disappointing because we’ve always loved it - can’t imagine other people will be happy with these changes either.

🤌🤌🤌Excellent restaurant. I thought it might be a bit silly going for Italian food in the middle of a day out in the countryside. But damn, this place was amazing and the food was some of the best I've ever had. 100% recommended giving this place a whirl. Very friendly staff and very well priced.

I took my daughter here as part of a shopping day treat and we weren’t disappointed. We had the excellent value £13 for two courses lunch time special. The soup was delicious and the mussels large and tasty. Our pizza and risotto didn’t disappoint either. The staff were friendly helpful and polite. We will definitely be returning.

A great Italian place in Helmsley. Quite a few options to choose from including the veggie ones. I really liked their prawn risotto. The service is great and it’s a baby-friendly place.

No plant based options in 2024? Old fashioned. They can give you a pizza without cheese and meat but don't have set vegan friendly options. Also it's a set menu so what about vegan friendly desserts and starters?

Felt really authentic. We started with the sharing antipasti (almost a meal in itself) followed by pasta. All washed down by a couple of glasses of white wine.

The beers were great, nice staff, food was fairly priced but not quite right for an Italian appetite ;) overall we enjoyed our experience in there.

We had a bad experience the first time, but but thought we would give La  Tattoria another go  Big mistake! A favourite of mine linguine vongole was inedible - tastless apart from vey strong lemon flavour. I sent it back and changed to penne with basil pesto and pine nuts. I was surprised to get a dish that was grey rather than green. The dish had been ruined by adding lots of cream and a ridiclous overpowering amount of pine nuts. My wife faired no better. With her garlic allergy many of the dishes she wanted she couldnt have because the gravy contained garlic. The said they were unable to make any gravy without garlic or even a mushroom sauce as alterative. My wife (a chef) was astonished. She instead ordered the sea bass with tomatoes, anchovies and capers. It arrived in swimming in a bowl of tomato sauce despite the menu not mentioning sauce. She asked for the excess sauce to be removed, which they did, but by then the dish was ruined The manager defensively said they always did it like that as if that made it right. Needless to say we didnt risk any desserts. Also the wine is quite expensive On the plus side their coffee is very good - I would just steer clear of the food. With so many issues (e.g. çant knock up an alternative sauce without garlic) I would be surprised if we were just unlucky on both our visits. There has to been fundemental issues in their kitchen. Highly disappointing and really surprised they have such a high google rating The 2 stars we awarded are for ambience, coffee and location.

First time here yesterday evening. Lovely staff and food, with a great 2 course special for only £13.00. Only live 25 minutes away so will definitely return. One(minor) gripe was £11.00 for glass of wine, but the wife said it was very nice as I was paying...again. :)

Very disappointed! Came here for a family meal and have left very upset about the whole experience. Had a table booked for 5:15, didn’t receive any food until roughly 6 but the time that we got menus and got a quick look through them (not a problem but they said they needed the table back for 7 so this created a rush from the start) The food was average but the service and atmosphere was horrendous. We were being watched over for the whole meal and plates were being cleared while some of us were still eating. One of our family members asked for a drink with the puddings and we were rudely told that they needed the table back. For a meal that costed over £300 it was very disappointing. Will not be going back.

On a busy Saturday night, the service was slow, we started with sourdough and labneh & dukkha, then shared their rarebit on a flatbread with a nice sauce, that was the highlight. I followed with cod and monkfish with mussels, the fish was good but the mussels with it were cold. My wife chose lamb rump which was also cold and was undercooked. We cancelled a second booking.

Cash only environment so go figure which they only tell you about when you get there. Rude staff, place looks filthy but no different to how food is presented. Parmo tastes nothing like a parmo should, more like microwaved chicken and cheese. Chicken burger had to be thrown away after on bite as stale bread used and chicken was cold and tough. Avoid this place please for your health and sanity.
