Great ambience. Looks like it's had a super makeover since I was there last. Fantastic to see such a lovely place in semi-rural Devon.

My husband & I had the pleasure of staying overnight last weekend. The room is luxurious & has every convenience provided, even for our dog who was equipped with bed, bowls & treat jar! I just visited The Ley Arms with my daughter and it was absolutely beautiful! I wanted to treat my little girl to a night away and Christmas shopping in Exeter and this couldn’t have been a better place to stay. It was so convenient to get into the city but set apart in a lovely little village. My daughter was thrilled with the room (as was I) which was decorated beautifully and so clean! We had dinner and breakfast in the pub/restaurant and it was delicious and so cozy and Christmassy. Needless to say my daughter can’t wait to go back and I would certainly love to return in the new year. Thank you for a wonderful, festive stay 😊

So, so disappointed in the Christmas Turkey meal. The menu states organic turkey & we were served a wedge of very thinly sliced turkey slices that I consider to have been reheated & covered in a copious amount of gravy. The vegetables were plated up & also swamped in gravy. Never, ever have I been served such an appalling Christmas themed meal. No dish of freshly cooked vegetables offered either. Come on, Ley Arms.I don'tappreciate being charged top prices for canteen style' food! This was my first visit... & it will be the last.

Disappointed is the word I would use to describe our visit here. We have visited The Ley Arms numerous times for food and have always thoroughly enjoyed it. This time however the restaurant was cold, meals were cold, the veg was hard and 40 minutes after ordering our desert it still hadn't arrived so we spoke to one of the staff who finally brought it out to us. Our neighbouring table left before their desert came out!! We proceded to complain afterwards and have been offered a round of drinks next time we go but as it is a drive to destination this really doesn't benefit us at all and I feel doesn't make up for paying out £137.00 on a meal that was of a very poor standard. Needless to say we won't be eating there again and feel undervalued as a customer

The restaurant was beautifully decorated for Christmas and the rooms very cosy. But the meal was very poor. Pate starter was good to share but the main course was very uninspiring. Very little difference in a large and small plate. The herb crust top on the beef was very hard, the sprouts were inedible and so undercooked you couldn't cut them with a knife. A few carrots would have cheered up a very bland looking plate of food.

Service wasn't great, couldn't find any staff to order more drinks or get some gravy to warm the dinner up. In the end I went up to the bar, at which point I still had to wait for staff (I think the manager) to stop being angry at a booking form and look up to help. Luke warm Sunday roast, potatoes hard on the outside and dry inside (seemed like they had been sat for ages) Yorkshire puddings with a similar quality to Aunt Bessie's and a splash of gravy on top. If a pub wants to justify £19 to £25 for a roast + £6 for cauliflower cheese they need to be able to deliver on quality and service. Unfortunately they didn't on this occasion. Edit: Wife told me to put something nice, the dog was lovely 😬 and a beautifully decorated pub.

Sunday lunch - upscale prices for rather average food and service. It was just ok for us, and not good enough to make us want to return. Peculiar reaction at payment when I rounded the bill up, which amounted to about 7%, so below a standard tip, but something at least. Didn't say anything, but it was noted. What a difference a day makes. I had a meal last night, very good food, service, in a lovely pub/restaurant. I returned tonight, on the strength of last night's experience. Initially things went well, I was accommodated quickly, even though I had not made a reservation. Food was fair, service was not. I waited half an hour for dessert, tried to attract staff attention, and eventually gave up. I went to the bar, and asked the waitress to cancel the order. She said something about having problems. I said, had she checked on me, I would have ordered something else. She glared at me, and walked away. Another waitress asked if I wanted to pay my bill, which I did. She had the manners to apologise. The Ley Arms is priced on the higher side, the service should be high quality. It is not.

Stopped here for some lunch with a friend on a August Friday lunchtime. It's a large pub and wasn't too busy. The food was good - we had fish and chips - but was pricey for what it was at £18 (I think). There was also only a few chips served with it which was a bit disappointing. It was OK though and a nice quiet patio area to be able to sit outside. There is a large car park but limited options for parking bicycles where you could lock your bike securely, so could do with ssomething to encourage bike use.

The ley arms used to be mine and my partners go to place for a lovely dinner, since the continuous increase of price for the Friday night steak deal it only seems the quality of food has declined. Unfortunately this has put me and several others off. Also they always used to allow me and my partner to replace the alcoholic drinks with soft drinks, this is no longer the case as well. When queried, we was told the only way around it was to purchase said steak meal incl alcohol and further drinks for us to actually drink

A large place to eat as places go. So getting a table was not tricky. Unfortunately the service was poor, it seemed that there were no fixed tables for the staff to serve. This resulted in our pudding order and second drinks order going astray -which left is waiting and waiting and only after asking did the staff realize their error. And so they did remove the costs from the final bill... The food was okay a good selection of meat based dishes but my first choice has run out when ordering but not much choice of vegetarian options so do check their online menu to be sure it is worth going. The atmosphere was busy and friendly and the staff were truly apologetic for their error. An okay place to eat.

The roast was incredibly average for the price (£19 for a standard). Whilst portions were good, roast potatoes were not what anyone would call roast potatoes, but new potatoes heated to give the edges the tiniest wisp of crispiness. The seasonal vegetables (broccoli and courgette) were barely cooked and hard. Roast beef was thick, chewy and tough as old boots. Carrots and parsnips, whilst tasty, seemed straight out of a Tesco seasoned veg bag. The ‘giant pigs in blankets’ was a singular bacon-wrapped sausage cut into six pieces and placed in a small ramekin for £6. Sticky toffee pudding was okay, definitely not worth the price tag breaking £10. The cake was warm, but the surrounding caramel was cold (as if spooned on after heating). Ice cream was placed on a revolting, sawdust-like biscuit crumb that genuinely tasted of wood. What an absolute disappointment.

We were at my mother in laws 90th birthday meal with family & friends. Despite the sign stating all dogs must be on leads. One wasn't. I witnessed on two occasions a waitress trip carrying hot food over it. Sadly, due to its location, there is no wifi. The emergency services could not contact any of us when my father in law who was at home set off his fall alarm. That ended up with extended family from Bristol being called. So yes great food, livley decor. But can't ever go back with out an emergency responce link.

Unfortunately we did not enjoy our Sunday roast dinner; the potatoes were rock solid on the outside and super dry on the inside; the gravy was like water; the pork was very dry; they forgot to give us the included stuffing; the nutroast was a strange texture and personally we thought courgettes were a weird addition to a roast dinner! They also got our drinks order wrong and the service was really slow. It's a shame because the pub itself is really lovely in design but we had a very long journey so were very disappointed.

A three course meal for two was over in a flash, helped by the professional service of the staff for both drinks and food. In what felt like no time we had our drinks and starters. Visited Ley Arms for Sunday lunch today (21st April). A beautiful place, in a picturesque village. We had starters - mushrooms in blue cheese sauce on toast - absolutely delicious. We eagerly awaited our Sunday lunch. How disappointing. The potatoes were clearly not freshly cooked, but seemed to be reheated, being tough on the outside and dry and almost empty inside. The Yorkshire pudding, was very odd? It was very crispy and just snapped in your mouth. The lamb was disappointingly tasteless. For £19.50 for roast lamb dinner, I expected something far superior. It's got a nice interior - an interesting vibe with dark blue paint and fairylights. The food was fine - a decent burger and chips. The prawn cocktail was a tenner, which seemed a bit expensive at first, but when it arrived it was generous with the prawns and had a couple of nice thick slices of smoked salmon. Personal taste, but for me, coleslaw with onions has no place in a prawn cocktail and it was a bit wet, but that's the only comment I'd make. Staff were helpful and friendly. Lovely traditional country pub, wood fires, cosy seating area and a warm welcome. Special mention has to go to Naomi who looked after us on table 28 this evening. She was very friendly and incredibly professional, a credit to the establishment. We enjoyed the last tomahawk steak remaining in the kitchen which was served with a complimentary bottle of wine, thick cut 'proper' chips and we chose to add onion rings (a great addition, hand cut and very tasty) and the blue cheese sauce. Our meal was served by another waitress who upon delivering it to our table asked if we would like plates? An unusual question but I suppose there are people out there that would eat it directly off the wooden board it was served on 🤷🏼‍♂️ there were also no steak knives offered? Was this a mistake or is the chef that confident in their cooking ability they felt they weren't required?? Alas we were able to enjoy our meal using the usual table cutlery. Our only comment being the sauce was very thin and not very cheesy. Following our meal we opted for a dessert from the specials menu. A Jamaican ginger cake sundae with rum and raisin ice cream and fruit and nut chocolate brittle, stem ginger and Chantilly cream. Sounds delicious! After approximately 25-35 minutes this was delivered and unfortunately didn't match the wow factor our main course had. In fact I'd say it lacked everything and appeared to be a sundae glass with some fairly bland ice cream topped with a 99 style flake! Definitely not worth the wait. We bought these points up with Naomi who was very apologetic and removed the items that didn't meet their expectations from our bill. We were wished safe travels and bid farewell. In conclusion I'd say we left as happy customers despite the few minor issues encountered and are looking forward to returning. Was mother's day and didn't feel like much of an effort was put on for the mums. Rosties reheated, unless it was just mine Or as we were clearly the last reservation. Was given the scraps. No cheesecake left and kn a area with a large booking made us feel pushed out the way.

Amazing traditional country pub. Very dark inside with lots off nooks and crannies for dinning. Staff where great except for the older lady possibly manager/owner with glasses pulled a face when I requested condiments for my sausage and mash. Sausage and mash Which was ok mash tasted a bit like packet mash. There own sausage recipe was ok good size banger. Prawn cocktail lacked mary rose sauce. Calamari starter I found boring. The hummus and crudités came out as a bread sharing platter olives hummus (which was very course with a lot of garlic. Which they left and went and got the crudités and hummus. Arrived with just crudités no Hummus.. Overall it was ok but for pub food it just lacked pub food vibes especially for the price. Definitely the better pub in the area.

Wow! This is a truly special pub. It’s really large inside with lots of nooks and crannies. The decor is very traditional and the atmosphere really cosy and relaxed. We visited on Saturday lunchtime to celebrate Mother’s Day. It was very busy and we were really impressed that the tables were laid out in quite a spacious way, rather than crammed in like so many other pubs do. We always look for dog friendly venues when dining out. Several dogs were visiting today including two of our own. All dogs present were impeccably behaved. I’m sad I didn’t get to meet Bertie the Pub Dog (hopefully next time). The staff were all friendly, polite and helpful. The food was fabulous. Most of us had Fish and Chips. The batter was crispy and perfectly cooked. Desserts were presented beautifully and also delicious. Our Mum’s were delighted with their day out. If we lived closer, we would be regulars!! We will be booking up again soon for sure.

Fantastic evening meal in a beautiful setting. I had a gorgeous steak and my other half’s fish was huge and so meaty!! Our son had a main burger and he loved it - particularly the skinny fries! Sticky toffee pudding and sorbet were chosen for dessert and both were really yummy. Our waitress was so friendly and lovely. Even took our little boy to a little games chest for us to play a game (scrabble) at the table. Little touches like that always make me want to return 😊 oh I also added the king prawns to my steak and they were delicious!!

Really lovely vibe, great decor. Service was good, location is good but not obvious. Had a look at the rooms and they are decorated and finished to a stylish and high standard.

A last minute decision for Sunday lunch and The Ley Arms was fantastic. Very fortunate to be able to get a table for 2 without booking (booking is highly recommended!) and the Sunday roast was fantastic both in quality and quantity

We visited this pub for an evening meal prior to a large family get together planned for March. Externally, when my wife and I arrived, liked the look of the place. This however proved to be to high point of the evening. On entering, I was disappointed by the temperature, not cold but not warm enough to feel comfortable. I had been informed prior to our visit that it was top end for a pub restaurant and therefore I was expecting a more inviting and professional table dressing, but all we got was knife and fork on a paper napkin, salt & pepper pots and menu/wine list The lighting was inadequate and I had to use my phone torch to read the menu. Seating was of a minimum standard, not good enough for a long meal. The staff where variable, one disinterested, the young lady however tried hard to be pleasant and helpful. Overall the food was just ok, my steak was tough, lacking flavour and taste, my wife's fish was not the best. We declined a sweet or pudding and left, both in agreement that this was a one off occasion and was not the venue for us.

Stopped off for a Sunday Lunch after a dog walk at Dawlish. We've been here a few times before and the food is very good, literally can't fault it. However...... the service on this Sunday afternoon was very ordinary. The restaurant wasn't busy, but the staff treated us as though we were invisible. I went to ask for a menu and a lady walked past me with three in her hand and said "wait a minute". No problem. I got two menus. Fifteen minutes later I flagged a waitress down to take our order. 40 minutes later our food arrived.I feel like this is quite a long wait for a fairly pricey Sunday lunch. Now, as I said, the lunch was really good, but I do have a gripe - £5 extra for Pigs in Blankets, (not enough of them for a family of 3) and £5 extra for Cauliflower Cheese, (not enough for a family of three). Our meal for three adults with one soft drink each came to £79, which I don't think is cheap for a roast dinner. I don't mind paying if the food and service is good, but on this occasion I don't think the service was up to scratch. Hopefully it was just an off-day.

Fantastic roast and good house wine. Quick and friendly service. We arrived without booking and there was no problem finding us a table. So good that a country pub does food on a Sunday throughout the day.

Not our first steak night but the best. Fantastic steak. Heavenly chips served on the side !(I hate them served under the steak) and a tasty salad. Great beer and top service. A really good evening thanks

This was my first visit and just before Christmas, dog friendly which is a must for us. Excellent food and service. Just a tad too dark for me, I like to be able to read the menus more easily. We will return.

The Christmas carol evening has always been a lovely pre-cursor to the festive season but we were disappointed with the length of time we had to wait for our table, also it was by the kitchen door which meant we were constantly seeing the staff coming in and out of the kitchen ( not good).

A great find. We stay locally while visiting my daughter, this is a bit off the beaten track but well worth a visit. It's a lovely, traditional, cosy country pub in a small village. Lots of small rooms, nooks and fireplaces. A friendly welcome and a nice menu. All locally sourced with a focus on food miles. I had a local steak which was cooked perfectly. Will definitely be back.

Used to be a good chippy but since it’s been taken over I have to say worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. Soggy batter and the smallest “large” portion of chips I’ve ever seen.

Excellent Christmas lunch in a pleasant and comfortable environment! Large portions of delicious food across the 4 different meals we ordered. Steak and kidney suet pudding has large, melt in your mouth, meat and exceptional flavour! First rate Otter Ale on hand pump. No wonder we keep coming back.

*****2024***** We went after a couple of visits and over a long period of years again and found out that The Cleave has had new owners quite recently. As one has to remember that food rating can be a very personal matter, we must say that this lunch (29th of Dec.) was absolutely exceptional and worth coming back. We have had a Sunday Roast with Pork and a beautiful Gamekeepers-Pie. The gravy was absolutely brilliant. Always remember to order an extra boat of gravy!! Service very very good and friendly with a warm welcome. So good, we asked to put us down for two more pre-booked visits. Can't wait. Go and have your experience, you won't regret it. Thanks to the Team and all the best for the new Year and new business. ***** 2019 ****** today I must write this review about my experience of my dish on Boxing Day 2019. I did order a Steak and Suet Pie. ..... THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY EXTRAORDINARY ....... what perfect and hearty dish, very very meaty at all. The chef did not sparse out on steak meat ( as you can sometimes normally encounter) I did wonder I could manage it at all. The veggies were perfectly prepared and all in all I loved it very very much. So ----- if you are around on Dartmoor go and visit LUSTLEIGH´s "THE CLEAVE". I hope they keep it for a good long time on the menu.

Rainy day, no menu visible from outside so we went in. Whilst the server was busy chatting we looked at the big board, but there were limited offerings for lunch so when she turned her attention to us, I asked if this was everything they offered (thinking there might be a written menu as well or something). She told me, fairly rudely, that that was everything they did and if we wanted something else we could go somewhere else, "not that I am trying to get rid of you.. ha ha", And so we did just that. Cant tell you what the food was like, but we did have a very nice lunch elsewhere!
