Afternoon tea for 1 and lunch for 1 Whilst my friend really enjoyed her lunch of risotto the same cannot be said for afternoon tea, this was a gift for a special Birthday, we were seated straight away and ordered drinks and our food, I was never offered the aternoon tea menu and was most surprised when it arrived and found that 2 of the 4 finger sandwiches were not what I would ever eat, I told the waiting person and she said rather bluntly that I didn't say what I wanted..I then informed her I was never ever given a menu or told of the choices..I was never offered an alternative, I then had to ask for coffee to have with our meal as was again never offered or asked before the meal arrived, the scone.with clotted cream and jam was delicious but this is where it ended, the small raspberry choux bun was still cold inside, not long out of freezer along with a small stale square of carrot cake and a slice of red and green battenburg type of cake which was stuck to the serving board, my friend ate the macaron which was OK, I had to ask for more coffee, they may have been short staffed but in the 2.5 hours we were there on 6 people in total were in dining area, I am very disappointed, I always feel that when you leave food you are never asked if you enjoyed it or was there anything not to your liking as they don't want to know, I wouldn't recommend the afternoon tea but would the lunch, I think a bit of staff consistency would be good as the person in the smarter attire was obviously more experienced and customer friendly than the person waiting on

The room was nicely decorated but quite cold. We went as a group for the Xmas lunch menu and it was ok but nothing special. The starter was the best course, pate can’t really go wrong. The turkey main was ok but was served with a fondant potato, 3 Brussels sprouts laid on top of green beans which I thought odd for a Xmas dinner. Paying was a bit shambolic as there were a couple of big groups in and everyone had to queue at the reception desk to pay .

Lovely surroundings and nice meal but the one thing that let it down was the service. We ordered our meal and drinks. Meal was lovely however we weren’t offered any more drinks and even though the bar was across the hallway, I don’t expect to go to the bar for more drinks when in the restaurant. I would expect table service. We were there 3 hours so that is a long time to have only one drink. It wasn’t busy so there really is no excuse.

We had stayed at the hotel a few years ago and had been so impressed with the food in the restaurant - and the maître d who had been outstanding. So whilst we were staying in the area, we decided to revisit. We weren’t disappointed with any of the food - it was truly outstanding. The tuna carpaccio and the scotch egg starters were given the thumbs up by my hubby and son. We then had the monkfish, pork fillet and ribeye steaks for mains… all superb. I had the rhubarb cheesecake dessert, which was wonderful and the men had brandy coffees. The wine was reasonable at £28. All in all, a memorable meal… but we missed the Maître D of before.. the service was good but needs tweaking with a little more attention to detail that befits a restaurant of this calibre. Nothing a little training wouldn’t solve!

Menu choices & food outstanding. Waitress really good, but let down badly by her team mates. One was absent, and two were young & inexperienced which we totally understand. We couldn’t excuse the forth member of the teams attitude however. We chose Marshall Meadows as the last time we went it was simply glorious, so disappointing this time. It was a birthday surprise as I noted in the booking, but no reference to that at all.

We booked in January to meet here for a family reunion. Family members from Chile, Spain, Indonesia, Essex and Yorkshire. I booked this via email in January. NO reply. Emailed again in February, no reply. Phoned in February. I was told that they ahd found my email, but forgotten to book us in! No problem, they would take the booking for Dinner on Mother's Day weekend over the phone. This was done. I told them that we were travelling from all over the World to meet up. I never had an email confirming, but the person I spoke to on the phone assured me all would be well. The day before we were due to meet up.. as I was driving up the Country, I had a phone call from Marshall meadows telling me that they were going to have to cancel my booking for the following evening!! Another huge booking, wanting the whole place had come in and they were taking that. When questioned, they admitted that they had known about this booking for a while and had just forgotten to tell me!! We were left in the lurch, but fortunately were able to get a last minute table in The Queens Head,. As it turned out that had a much better menu, much better atmosphere and were friendly and helpful. It is disgusting that a place as well known as Marshall meadows can treat customers in this way just because a larger booking comes in. To not tell us until the night before, when they admitted to knowing weeks before is so bad. We had travelled from all over the World. I will never go there again, and never recommend Marshall Meadows to anyone again. No compensation. I got the impression that although they said they were sorry to have forgotten to notify me, they really didn't care.

We had a very disappointing Christmas day meal here. We had looked forward to it for a long time and it is a bit of a gamble dining out on the 25th December but we didn't do so well unfortunately at the Marshall Meadows Country House Hotel. We were ushered through the function area passing by diners and guided through to a chilly and unwelcoming big conservatory for pre meal drinks. Difficult I understand to heat in the winter months but we had elderly guests and if we wanted to sit outdoors in the garden shed and freeze we would have done so, The Bucks Fizz had no fizz to it and the canapés were stale and they didn't even have napkins out to place them on. We were called to the table back through in the function room 20 minutes late -not so bad if we hadn't been frozen. The haggis. black pudding terrine was a mushy, rather tasteless mess. The other starters were just okay. Poor main courses with miniscule helpings of none too tasty vegetables. A tiny bit of piped mashed potato. We realised en route home that my husbands Roast Rib of Borders Beef had been devoid of the advertised Yorkshire pudding. There was no Christmas atmosphere and the same dreary CD played repeatedly (we could have provided some more for the day) The desserts faired no better unfortunately. The advertised Chocolate and Orange Cheesecake (for we had to submit our choices ahead of time) turned out to be a non descript tasting mousse. The Strawberry and Mascarpone Tart-was so tiny as to be insignificant. I saw one 3 times the size for one pound at the local supermarket the other day. It wasn't made clear whether coffee was included and no one made mention of this at the close of the mealA very disheartening and unsatisfactory Christmas day out. If we had known quite how bad it was going to be we would have stayed at home happily. What went wrong with the management, the chef and the Christmas meal plans I do not know

Following a recommendation, went for a meal here with family - a special occasion. The person behind the bar was ponderous and poorly presented - shirt needed tucking in.Initial impressions were that the menu was limited in choice and a bit overpriced - however, was prepared to be swayed if the meal was first class. Not swayed: the fish cakes were very tasty; but the main course was poorly presented - nothing {e.g. some herbs or butter on the vegetables} to lift it out of the ordinary; choice of vegetables was limited. On the bright side, the wine was good and reasonably priced. No dessert taken. In trying to pay the bill, the ponderous barman{now receptionist} was much more interested in his laptop than attending to us - waiting staff had to be summoned to have the bill paid at reception as no wireless terminal. Amateurish!

Nicely balanced dinner menu, with lots of locally sourced ingredients and special dishes. The seafood platter was sublime, and thoroughly recommend by all our party. Almost a meal in itself. But we went on to enjoy our main courses which were both very tasty and well presented, followed by a delicious home made brownie dessert. The restaurant's location on the english/scottish border is reflected in the menu too. The service was very attentive, friendly and well paced. Good wine list too, and after dinner whisky selection. In addition, the Bar with its open fireplace where we had an aperitif, and after-dinner Lounge with comfy sofas/chairs for coffee ensured a nicely varied and very relaxed evening all round.

Tripadvisor seems to be quite confused about this place. I'd recommend you look at the entry for it under the hotels category as there are a couple of very odd reviews under the restaurants category that seriously bias its rating. I suspect the 'pub food' comment is for a different restaurant (or perhaps the lunchtime experience is very different from the evening ones I've had), and the other negative comments don't fit with my experience either. I've visited this place for dinner with my wife once a year for perhaps 7-10 years and we always get an excellent meal in a special environment - an intimate but sophisticated country house feel, and friendly and helpful too. I'm not entirely convinced by their wine list but the food and ambience are well worth returning for.

Had dinner there on Saturday evening. We were shown to the table by a young waitress and I took my coat off, expecting her to take it from me and offer to hang it up. Not so, I had to hang it over the back of the chair. There was no offer of a bread roll to nibble on while we were waiting for our meal.Shortly after we sat down she came over with the wine bucket which she plonked down at the side of the table saying 'There's your wine.' No chance to see that I had chosen what was the most expensive wine on the list, let alone taste it. I had asked for a medium rare fillet steak. When it arrived it was clearly burned on the outside and overcooked. It was also of poor quality, being tough and sinewy. At £25 a pop it wasn't cheap. When asked about coffee I asked for it in the lounge and continued to finish my wine. When we arrived in the lounge the coffee was there and had gone cold. It would have been preferable for it to have been delivered after we had taken our seats. I complained to the owner about my disappointment but he appeared completely disinterested. He did, however, offer me a whisky. The restaurant itself is very nice and full of charm but the waitresses are in sore need of some decent training. Carrying drinks to guests' tables using a tray, stopping referring to diners as 'youse' and learning how to present wine at the table would go a long way. My partner's steak and ale pie was excellent by the way, but there again how can anyone make a mess of heating up a pie. The cost of the meal was £85. I'm a local man but have advised the owners that I will not be going back. Such a shame. It was excellent a few years ago.

Food , massive improvement from hard roast potatoes to an enjoyable meal , gravy was very watery but the sticky toffee pudding was delicious ! Table service was good. Now my major picking point that let it down was the bar ...I never paid the same price twice for my drink despite having the same thing all night. Average around £3 for an alcopop but my friend paid £1.90 for an non alcoholic can of Irn Bru ! A bit on the steep side ! Drinks tariffs need to be on display at the bar clearly for the customer to see in my opinion not just made up by each of the staff who only a few of which knew how to smile ! Other than that the function room was clean , well laid out , toilets were spotless and was an ok night- better much better !

I'm on record as having said on many occasions that if they awarded PhDs for scone-tasting, I should have a dozen. I've eaten scones in venues from the Orkney Islands to Australia and written about them in more publications than I could possibly remember. So, you can take my word for it that the freshly-baked, home-made scones (with butter and strawberry jam) at No.6 are quite possibly the best I've tasted in recent years. Cafe No 6 is a quaint place with a very atmospheric first-floor eating area, a delightful owner and staff who look like they are actually enjoying the job they do. My wife and I were just as impressed with the special 'doggy menu' on offer. We shall be back!

Having been for a lovely meal a year ago we promised ourselves Christmas lunch this year. It was not cheap - £240 for 2 but we expected a nice experience so didn't mind. On arrival I was offered a drink and a waitress on her way back to the kitchen offered a left over canape. They said they were bringing more out but these never appeared - my husband didn't get one at all. There was nowhere to sit in the hall and as I struggle to stand for any length I had to ask about being seated. There was nowhere to hang coats except on the back of the dining chair canteen style. Please note we had been to The Grand Tynemouth the previous day and coats had been taken and hung on a rail. The room was undecorated for Christmas and cramped. We were sat at a very feeble table that seemed to have been assembled that morning-very rickety. After about 10 minutes a bread roll was brought. Great we thought food is coming. 20 minutes later the starter arrived. Considering we had pre'ordered early in December it should have been more organised. The starter we chose -pate- came with a very strange slice of bread? That I can only liken to jamaica ginger cake - not at all compatible. Then followed a long wait for the plates to be collected. No sign of a drinks waiter we had been there almost an hour. We eventually caught a chap who had delivered drinks to a nearby table and he did serve us. Dinner finally arrived - and I can tell you it wasn't just us. We were all looking around wondering what was happening. Nearly 45 minutes later. The dinner itself was not pleasant and definitely not worth the £240 cost. The roasts were not crisp. The turkey appeared to be pressed meat. The stuffing seemed to be commercial rubbery type. To say we were disappointed does not overstate it. I wasn't prepared to wait another 30 minutes or more for a sliver of Christmas pudding. So we left. Eshott what were you doing??? The whole thing was a shambles and definitely not what we expected or anticipated. You didn't appear to have enough staff. You crammed too many people in and your chef must have had a day off. Ruined what we had been looking forward to.
