Miller & Carter Wheathampstead in St Albans

Had the half of chicken and chorizo and what came was a chicken thigh and a chicken wing no breast and wasn't half a chicken just cheapest bits of chicken paid over £20 it was shocking

Impromptu Sunday meal. Lovely food. Belinda was our waitress who very friendly and helpful. Only thing was we were all quite cold. I know it’s an old building but it was cold and draughty.

Such a shame. My parents visited Wheathampstead last night for a special meal that I purchased for them. The food was incredible, however the service was terrible. They were seated in an area of the restaurant that was freezing. They asked on several occasions if they could move tables as they were both having to sit and eat in their coats. They were told there was no additional heaters, and they would not move them, despite another large table complaining and them being moved. The draft and cold was so bad they were freezing the entire meal and left as quickly as possible. All tables in the area were wearing coats to eat. They then politely mentioned to a third member of staff on the way out who was a manager and not even so much as an apology on their exit after spending over £120 on food. What a way to ruin their special night.

Had a 30th with 15 guests & the service was superb! Huge thanks to Belinda who was beyond helpful with the set up & arranging the candles & cake topper for me. The service was brilliant, definitely recommend, especially for a special occasion!

Another lovely meal. Steaks cooked as we asked for. The servers were friendly and attentive but not overpowering. A great experience, again.

Always have a good meal at this restaurant, so much so that we actively choose to go here despite there being a closer Miller & Carter to our home. The choice is excellent and of all the sides and steaks we’ve experienced, we are rarely disappointed by this chain but never by this branch in wheathampstead, add to this our recent visit and excellent host Belinda, we will be visiting more often.

I usually go to the Miller & Carter in Stevenage but came here for my birthday for a change as it is a bit closer to where I live. From start to finish I was very impressed with the service, food, and atmosphere. When I arrived, the lady who showed us to our table wished me a happy birthday. Then Belinda looked after us throughout our meal and she was very attentive, friendly, and nothing was too much trouble. I even got a little sweet treat for my birthday which I particularly appreciated! The food is excellent and I will definitely be returning to the Miller & Carter in Wheathampstead from now on. Thank you!

Such a lovely spot with great food and service, it’s Miller and Carter so you know you’re going to get a good steak but the service was also top notch. Thank you to our lovely waitress for making our evening a memorable one.

Way overpriced food. Upon arrival went to the bar, the young lad eventually acknowledged my presence, then disappeared. Stood there for 10 minutes, with several members of staff just walking past, not even asking if I was being served. The lad reappeared and took my order, which was the plant-based burger. When I was ordering, I ordered the burger with fries and leafy salad. When the food arrived, no salad. When enquired, turned out that the wording in the menu “with either fries or grains and a leafy salad”, meant “either fries, or grains, or salad”. Not clear from the menu. But when brought up with 2 members of staff, neither seemed sure what exactly was meant in the menu, but ok, agreed it was a choice between the 3, even though I feel the wording on the menu is misleading. The lad who delivered the food, didn’t ask whether any condiments were wanted, had to ask for ketchup for the fries. The burger was supposed to have “smashed avocado” in it, but got a measly slice of avocado, with brown bits on it (as per the photos). At no point had anyone come over to ask how the food was. As for the “pickled red onions” - gross; those onions have been pickled for a loooong time - just slimey and slushy. Tried 2 pieces, 5 minutes apart, just to be sure. I pickle red onions at home, so do know what they should taste like. No crunch - just old mush. The staff seem fed up and disinterested. Not their fault 💚 Personally, I’d feel down working in a place like that too. £17 for that plate of food is a robbery. A decent joint for a drink, but they seem to look after groups with more much interest, so if you are a solitary visitor, and want food, I do not recommend.

My partner and I visit here regularly because we have never had a bad meal, the steak is always cooked to perfection, the drinks are lovely and the service is amazing. We are usually looked after by Claire, who we cannot rave enough about! She’s an absolute delight! We’ll see you again soon I’m sure!

My husband and I had our Christmas dinner at the Miller and Carter Wheathampstead having had it there three years ago (back then, it was excellent)…..this year…not as good. The service by Keelly and the team was excellent, unfortunately we were sat right at the back, in a corner by the fire escape door which wasn’t the best seating area, we felt “out of the way” and there was zero atmosphere - last time we were in a lovely, cosy booth. I had requested a waterside view, we could see the water, but through the fire escape window…..No Christmas music, which was unfortunate… The food was nice, okay…. didn’t blow us away…it all tasted good…my prawn starter was cold…the main was nice, roast potatoes a little bit burnt..dessert was good. Overall okay, but we’ve had much better pub roast dinners on your average Sunday. My husband commented that last time, the turkey dinner was more traditional I.e turkey breast, stuffing on the side, this year, it was a tiny amount (1 piece) wrapped around a little stuffing…he also had two potatoes halves…so technically, 1 potato. We didn’t expect massive portions…but would we say it was worth £95…no….would we do it again at Miller and Carter…probably not. Totally understand prices have gone up all over the place…but don’t think it was good value. Not the way it was advertised which was a real shame. It didn’t ruin the day…but left us feeling a little bit underwhelmed.

The staff & Keely was lovely and friendly and chat, she informed us on the manu just a lovely lady.. keep her around and pay her more, thank you for having us we appreciate it, have a great 2025 continue being amazing guys… favourite by far

Had a pre Christmas get together with friends a couple of days ago. Food and service were excellent in particular from our waitress Belinda who was very friendly and looked after us superbly

It was a birthday event, the waitress assigned to us was aggressive, my 86 year old mother asked for a martini which she was told was not available, an alternative was offered which the waitress brought back and said to her ‘ look I will take a swig with ya’ and proceeded to take the shot of alcohol, which alarmed us all, at this point we asked to speak to the Managet. She then got confused regarding who required which sauce to which starter and main and how each steak was to be cooked. We requested another waitress who was obviously friends with the first one, and was equally aggressive. However as it was my birthday celebration I carried on with the 2nd waitress and the attitude being received, but then when the food came out it was barely warm, the sauces came out on the wrong plates. To cut a long story short we then proceeded to get the manager, please check cctv between 8 - 9 pm who had his feet up and was drinking a beer. Bearing in mind nobody had eaten all day as this was supposed to be an eating experience, he came over and we explained the problem,my mum by this point who is 86 had half eaten her burger, the manager then proceeded to say well just pay for the burger and the drinks u have had and u are free to go somewhere else! We would have walked out there and then in absolute disgust but it was a birthday occasion and we had already been there 1.5 hours and have found it difficult to find elsewhere to celebrate. So sticking with it, the Manager then suggested he would replace all the meals and they would all be cooked as originally requested. So everyone had their meal but the person who actual birthday was still waiting after 15 mins to which we alerted the manager, he advised he thought my meal was originally ok even though I handed my previous meal to him untouched. I was then told it would be a 30 Minute wait for my steak, as there was no other choice ok! My steak came out when everyone else had finished their meal, without the onion slice or chips, but then this was remedied. Finally my family had told the manager at the beginning it was my birthday and requested a brownie or something to acknowledge my big day, anyway after I had eaten a young waiter delivered 2 x spoons on the table, then 10 mins brownie arrived with a sparkling candle on a plate, I said do u not sing happy birthday, and they said they did not do that, albeit the table opposite had the same with the 2 aggressive waitresses singing their heart out. The total experience was a complete nightmare, and I think the CcTV should be checked on this occasion. I do hope all Millar and Carter are not the same as this as our party felt abused.it was my birthday and I burst into tears, my daughter suffers from anxiety and was shaking, total lack of responsibility, empathy. First of all, we were served by Katie. She was exceptional! Extremely attentive, knowledgeable and efficient. Very friendly and was helpful with everything we needed. The meal was excellent. The steak was absolutely perfect, as was all the sides and the starters. The wine was excellent as well. Really lovely evening spent at Miller and Carter Wheathampstead.

I have been going here for years and loved the atmosphere food and service. In the last two years it's gone down. I told myself it must have just been an off day. And went again. I loved my shin but my guest was not happy. I was not happy with the service. I went again in the hope it was an off day and got the same waitress that mostly ignores you avoids eye contact and just takes long to do anything. My two guests were unhappy with the food. I had shin which was yummy. We were waiting so long to get her attention and I was cornered in by my mom I ended up phoning reception for service. It went to a main line and voice mail so that didn't help. Eventually we asked the table in front of us to call her bc she managed to serve them without looking in our direction to even see a wave. I decided to book for Christmas day but wasn't going to spoil my day with bad service from which I get from this girl each time. If I got her I'd rather not go so I asked to not get that waitress and described her. Apparently they didn't appreciate my description, but we never got her name and it must have been accurate bc they said they didn't need to ask who. So I booked at the fox and will not go back there bc the service is too irritating. I always enjoy my food there bc I tend to order according to my pallet and don't believe you will always get the same fillet. But the service and atmosphere sucks. I wish I could give -10 stars. Having spoken to someone else, I found out they had a similar experience of generally everything going down in the last two years she said that MC in St Albans is like the old MC wheathampstead. By the way the old bell Sunday lunches are to die for and service is great. Look up my review to the fox after Christmas day.

We popped to this M&C as our 1 was fully booked. Pretty quiet for a Friday but it was quite early on . Staff were welcoming. Steaks were lovely- cooked perfect . Restaurant felt a little cold .

First visit to this particular venue for a family birthday and we were all delighted with our evening. Expertly looked after by Belinda all evening our meals were all delicious,served with a smile which is so refreshing nowadays. Belinda was a great host and we’ll all definitely be returning. Belinda was a breath of fresh air, her fun personality made our experience very enjoyable. Her knowledge and understanding of the menu was out of this world too. The food was on point with all our dishes cooked perfectly.

I have been to The Bull a few times. The food is always delicious and fresh. A great place to go for a steak and the mocktails are pretty good too. It gets booked up so book early for a weekend.

Steak was good. However, there was an approx 10 min wait from when our side salad was brought out to when our meal arrived. When they did the fries and the burger were just warm enough and the onion loaf was not warm enough. This would suggest that the food had been sat waiting until the steaks were ready. The calamari was also poor quality (chewy and not very tasty). It also took a long time to have our table cleared after our main course which meant we did not have time to have dessert (although the waitress did sort them to take away for us).

I came for supper with two young children. Belinda looked after us superbly and was lovely with the kids. Thank you.

We all had a amazing meal here, we all had fillet mignon and it was cooked perfectly and to our individual needs. It is a lovely atmosphere and a lovely building. Staff are great and knowledgeable a special mention to Belinda who served us, lovely lady and always a pleasure to see her and be waited on by her. Belinda, who served us, was very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, my steak did not come out as ordered, but the staff were apologetic and sorted it without issue. Belinda gave us an additional piece of brownie as a goodwill gesture, which was a nice touch. Our food was tasty. Would definitely go back again.

This is the third time we have visited this M&C and they service was excellent, Katie was amazing, very much made the evening. We traveled further (and almost past a different M&C) to get to this one and every time I’m glad that we do, top notch.

The food at Miller &Carter in Wheathampstead is always high standard and location is beautiful. However, did not have a good experience yesterday as we were celebrating my boyfriend's birthday. I added the reason when I booked the restaurant, the service asked us about the celebration. When I kindly asked the waitress if they could do anything special, I got quite rude reply that he did not order any desert so she has nothing to put a candle in.

Saw the ad for the Sunday sharer on Facebook yesterday and had to book immediately to try it! The meat, mash, roast potatoes, veg, yorkies and UNLIMITED BEEF DRIPPING GRAVY! That alone should make you book for next Sunday! This serves plenty for 2 people, or 1 if you’re really hungry! 😂 As always, lovely and efficient service from Belinda & Dan. Booked our table for 5pm but arrived a little early. Which was not a problem at all! We were served by Nicola from start to finish and she was fabulous! It's nice when Staff are warm and friendly. Dirty Burger was really tasty. Partner said ribeye was quite chewey... My upgrades chips tasted very bland and scallops were unreal bland... No lemons were saving those. Desert (banoffe) was tasty but cream was too light and not of the thickness it could have been. Nice location but not the best value for money for sure and brookmans park from relatively recent past experience was way better all round.

She handled a group of lively young lads brilliantly and stayed so calm and professional throughout their meal. My food was delicious. All three courses were great. Portion sizes are very generous so make sure you are hungry when you go. All serving staff were extremely polite and helpful.

Not our first visit; will not be our last. Keely looked after us excellently ensuring that all was to our satisfaction, even going as far as to apologise for another customer who was very noisy and disturbed (hence 4 stars for atmosphere!). As ever the food was excellent and steaks cooked exactly as requested. Cannot fault.
