Was visiting Middlesbrough that day and waiting for a friend. decided to go to Milligans to buy a hot drink to pass time. I ordered a drink and the granny served me. I ask why was the price different and she said i was sitting in to drink. This was fine but she looked at other customers when she replied back thinking i am stupid or something. I find her customer service skills lacking even for an experienced old staff and would have been forgiving if she was a trainee. Before she bought the drink to the table she shouted who ordered 'hot tea', at the time there was only 3 customers sitting in the cafe which shows either she does not care or she is showing signs of senile forgetfulness. Anyway at the end of the day this would be the last time I would enter this rundown cafe and definitely would not accept this poor attitude towards customers. A mentally challenging staff that has passed her expiry date to work in the F&B industry.

I ordered a coffee and toasted tea cake the woman who served me was so unfriendly and when she brought my order to the table just plonked it down and walked away The top of the Teacake was burnt black only the bottom was edible I watched her serving other customers and she had the same attitude so I just didn’t bother to complain I will never go back there again

Best pasties in town. Tasty and fully filled, not like some pasties that are only half full. Always buy to takeaway.

Their breakfasts have to be the worst ever...cold ...the egg was hard and icy cold. I demanded a full refund

We didn't complain at the time, but the tray that our food was presented on had a fairly big watery puddle: and no smile from the deliverer! No problem with the quality but the lack of friendliness makes me not want to eat there, again. .

I used to live in the north east and when I came to Middlesbrough I always came here. Lovely coffee, lovely food and great staff.

Bought some food to take out to eat while waiting for a bus. Good value sandwiches, friendly staff, well worth a visit

I ordered and paid then when I sat down I was shouted back up to the counter to be told it costs extra to sit in. I wasn't asked whether I was eating in or taking away so as you do I sat down but had to pay an extra pound to sit for 5 mins whilst I ate my sandwich. And it was distinctly average with the tiniest amount of brown sauce on one sausage.

We were travelling in the area on a Sunday, and this cafe was recommended as a good place for a snack. The choice was good and requirements are ordered at the counter. It was not very busy, but the service was a little offhand. However, the coffee and good quality of the snacks represented good value for money. If possible on Tripadvisor, I would rate this outlet as Good (3.5), but have discounted the "average" service in my overall rating

Was excited to see it re-open . Sadly it must be under new owner etc. All food is the poor quality cash and carry bought in stuff that every other take away has . All cook pretty well , chips arrived a bit soggy , all bread items a bit chewy buns and pizza base, ie not th freshest . Was cheap enough to compensate for new poor quality .

No large cups, no hot chocolate, no jam. 12 mins late opening. Poor showing considering it’s based in a hospital. Crap enough been here, never mind not having the basics.

Terrible, never again. I ordered an eggs benadict, costing 8.50. I’m vegetarian and it wasn’t advertised as having meat (pork bacon) i wasn’t advised when purchasing and advised the young waitress that we wasn’t aware when the food arrived, she offered to remove the just the bacon and give us the remaining item, I advised no due to dietary requirements (halal). The waitress went back and spoke to the manager who advised her that I would need to purchase again if I wanted a new one without bacon. I turned it away and didn’t purchase a new one. I went back to speak to the manager. she was sorry and if she was our waitress then she wouldn’t have charged us. I saw the young waitress asking her at the time, however the manager apologised and offered to give us a new eggs Benedict, I advised no, as we’re finished and had to head home. She said next time we come she would give us one - free of charge. I advised I would not be returning. Absolute terrible service. Customer service was appalling. Please avoid. Overpriced food.

Editing this review from when they had first opened. Came in January 2025 after previous visits being wonderful. Prior to this we last visited just over a year ago and prior to that many times before. We had booked for Sunday lunch and received a phone call the evening before to inform us that they wouldn’t be serving Sunday lunch but that the rest of the menu would still be available. We decided to go ahead with our booking. We’ve visited many times before and always enjoyed it, but unfortunately, this time was quite disappointing. There were four of us, and we ordered a Swiss cheese burger, a New York burger, poached eggs and avocado on toast, and ravioli with a bacon and garlic sauce. To our surprise, the food seemed to have been brought in from somewhere down the street—though we’ve no idea where from. The chips were cold, the burgers were overcooked, the poached eggs were hard, and overall the food was lukewarm. The constant opening and closing of the door made the room uncomfortably cold. To add to this, the bill was brought to us without us asking, and no one checked in to see if the food was okay. A very disappointing experience this time around. Previous review when they had opened and Massimo and his father were very present in the restaurant. Photos are from that time and I gave it 5 stars. I’ve been following their Instagram since they opened. We came in for lunch, today. Greeted at the door and seated straight away. The waiter offered us water while we perused the menus. I ordered the egg majo open sandwich and my husband ordered the coronation chicken open sandwich. Both delicious. We also had a portion of chips which came with two dips. After our food, we decided to stay a while and ordered cocktails. The atmosphere, wonderful decor, attention to detail, the service and especially the family history really make this place. Love it and we will be back. Well done to Massimo and his team.
