Our favourite place to eat in East Dulwich!

An absolutely key neighbourhood staple, Monkatsu has Japanese food good enough that even nerds like me who used to live in Tokyo love it. The real gems here are the home cooking staples of teriyaki and katsu, but their maki sushi is also really satisfying. Their sake menu is also really impressive. Best of all is their staff who go out of their way to fit you in, even when you show up like I did without a reservation in the middle of a rush.

Food was average for the price. Constant sound of deliveroo order notifications ruins any atmosphere. One wait staff couldn't be bothered to walk around from the counter to hand us drinks (we were sitting at the closest table). With the kids we opted for two kids meals which both included one scoop of ice cream. My third child didn't order the kids meal, so not technically "eligible" for the kids meal ice cream, was immediately told he would be charged until we questioned it. Reluctantly given a scoop after the chef gave approval! A scoop of ice cream! I think they need to work on their customer service and separating the deliveroo part of their business.

Super big portions and cracking service

Dining in is good, however just ordered several sushi rolls for delivery and the rice is extremely overcooked to the point of being inedible. I don’t believe they would serve this if dining in.

Lovely neighbourhood spot, the perfect place to just drop in and crush some ngiri. The katsu slaps, the rice is perfect and the staff are lovely. I live two minutes away but even if I didn’t I’d still come here.

Lovely atmosphere, location and cute decor but unfortunately the food really was bad -- sushi rice was super overcooked, vegetable tempura was just a frozen patty, veg in the ramen was just a bit of frozen corn and broccoli, red wine was not drinkable. And it wasn't cheap. Too bad!!

I had a lovely time dining at Monkatsu . The sashimi was very fresh and the sushi rolls were not only delicious but presented in a lovely manner . The hot food was delicious and I loved the Katsu sets that came with kewpie mayo , it makes the whole thing so delicious and filling. The front staff were lovely and helpful , the music was calm and I had a very relaxing time with my family . I would definitely recommend this place .

Comfy vibes and lovely service! We booked a table for 10 and were well looked after. Food is absolutely delicious and very fairly priced. We were in the area for an annual event and plan to return next year!

Booked this restaurant as it was recommended by a friend (subsequently found out she last went 2 years ago). I can only assume it’s gone downhill or we went on an off day. My sons ordered the katsu which they enjoyed. We also ordered the spicy tuna and eel rolls but the spicy tuna was tasteless. Service was so so slow and we were not asked for drink refills after the initial order or even checked on after getting our food. Half the table was cleared at the end and then that was it. No one came to clear the rest of the table or even ask if we wanted to order desserts or anything else so I called the waitress to get the bill. Then waited over 10mins to make the payment. No one came with the card machine so I called them over again. Won’t be back. Going out to eat shouldn’t be this hard.

Very poor imitation of Japanese food. Stay away unless you really want to be disappointed. Ramen was almost as if it’s assembled by someone who’s never seen an actual ramen and based everything on a bad drawing of one. We went on a very quiet Saturday afternoon and ordered takoyaki (octupus balls) for starter and for mains we had the katsu pork miso ramen and chicken yakisoba. Judging by the uniform appearance and hotter than hell inside, the takoyaki balls were of the frozen variety which were then microwave heated. The “ramen” had everything wrong: broth was bland with no taste of miso, the katsu pork was overcooked and chewy. Worse of all, the wrong kind of noodle was used: instead of real ramen noodle with bite, it was the thin vacuum packed generic type one can get from Sainsbury’s. And it was overcooked and soggy. There were for some unknown reason also chestnut mushroom as part of the toppings. As mentioned, it’s almost as if it’s assembled by someone who’s never seen an actual ramen, let alone eaten one. Yakisoba was equally disappointing as it’s too greasy and the chicken was overcooked. Again the noodle was wrong: it's the same supermarket type as the ramen. When we asked for the bill, the waitress left the bill with us and went back to the counter to chat with her colleagues / manager. Despite there being no other customers, we had to walk to the counter to ask to pay as no one was coming to the table with the card machine. It’s not unusual for Japanese restaurants in London to be slightly off the authenticity mark, but given its price point, location, decor and service, this one is by far the worst we have ever been to. AVOID.

After reading the reviews, I was looking forward to dinner here. The service was good initially but then all the courses were rushed out and piled up. The food was bland and poorly prepared. The starters are definitely the bought in frozen variety. The Nigiri was okay but nothing special. This is not traditional Japanese food. The chef and waitress standing by the front door smoking during service may have also put me off the place.

Vegan croquette katsu was really tasty. Good portion. Sushi was also spot on.

Service was not good. Our drinks were forgotten and the table was sticky. It was a little grubby in there over all. But the food was very good. Nothing ground breaking but tasty and good value for money.

Veggie tempura: relatively small portion for the price but decent enough. 3/5 Chicken yakisoba: soggy, aftertaste of bad seafood, and overall bland. 1/5 Service was good and attentive 4/5 Overall not great. There are so many better restaurants in the area. If you are after Japanese go to Yama momo instead.

This isn’t proper Japanese food. One of the worst, fake miso ramen I’ve ever tasted . We paid A LOT of money for one starter and two mains, and unfortunately didn’t enjoy the experience. Not worthy, won’t recommend

The best katsu curry I’ve ever had. I would really recommend trying the veggie croquet option. I would always recommend getting their specialty katsu curry, I’ve tried the ramen but am not a fan. The portion sizes are good. The mango mochi balls are also amazing!! One of my favourite restaurants/takeaways in London.

Great local restaurant. Authentic Asian cuisine with a menu to please everyone. Sushi is always fresh, the Katsu and Teriyaki dishes are some of the best in London. Ever changing specials are always interesting and great value. Save space for the deserts! One of the best restaurants in East Dulwich.

Got the hiya-yakko tofu and eel uramaki to take away. It was nice, though not amazing and especially not for the price. The people are very nice and the location looks lovely to dine in.

TERRIBLE SERVICE! - If i could give this 0 stars, I would. Firstly my daughters placed their orders of 2 different rolls. Then the server brought 2 rolls very quickly. They were a bit confused at the rapid service but since sushi is often very similar looking, they began to eat it. Side note - I am Japanese myself as well as my daughters and the sushi was nothing short of appalling. The rice was unseasoned, a big NO NO in all Japanese food, it was oddly steamed to the point of an unrecognisable mush. Anyway the food was not the main problem. The server then came out with 2 platters of sushi and we realised they had began eating the wrong rolls. The server went back in with her colleague and they debated on what to do. Then they began to have a terrible attitude and it was clear that they were mad that they ate the wrong food provided. They would not give them their actual order unless they paid for both. They even heard them exclaiming inside the restaurant very loudly (as they were eating outside) saying “those girls….” complaining about them. Then they began to ignore them, serving everyone else but them. They tried to ask for the bill and then it took them 20 minutes to give it to them. They dumped the bill on their table without saying a word. This is unacceptable and vastly inappropriate and my 2 daughters came home crying due to the service. Definitely not coming back. Loyal customers have been completely lost and will not be recommending again.

We went there after wanting to try this restaurant for such a long time. It was OK and the staff werelovely. But I don't think I'll again.

Food good but service terrible. Asked us to pay bill an hour before published closing time then once the bill was brought the staff were too busy on their mobiles to take payment. Brought all food at once despite specifically requesting a starter and main course.

Monkatsu used to be one of our favourites sushi restaurants but lately we find that the rice is hard the fish not abundant and the quality definitely not up to scratch. Especially for a take out for 2 people at the cost of £60/ 70. I hope that they soon return to their former glory... but i doubt that I will be there to see it.

Gyoza was very nice, sushi presentation was a bit haphazard. Pork katsu sauce was tasty but the pork itself was over cooked and dry. Yaki soba was very bland and didn’t taste of much. Probably won’t return

Great local Japanese restaurant offering top notch Katsu curries. Only thing that disappointed me was the cost of a pint of Kirin at £6.50. It was £5 when I last visited in 2020.

I wish I’d listened to the most recent reviews from people who understand what a ramen should be. I ordered a ramen and a Karage chicken. Both utterly vile. The broth was like water but filled with mushrooms and sweetcorn so it was incredibly sweet - not ramen flavour at all. The pork was tough and over cooked and the katsu batter on it was soggy and falling off. I honestly couldn’t eat it. The karage was also tough and covered in a sweet sickly mayonnaise. I’m still hungry, but feel sick and annoyed.

Delicious food. Very authentic and filling. Good customer service as well. We really didn’t need a started as this was such a generous meal. Nice gem in dulwich.

Had a takeaway delivered via Deliveroo. It was horrible - the ramen arrived in about an inch of warm water - this was supposed to be the stock-based broth. Utterly tasteless and the pork as hard as nails. Avoid.

Had a really excellent experience here. Went with a large group for my birthday and they made it a really special occasion. They were very attentive and managed to provide an excellent service to the table which was impressive for such a large and lively group. The food was honestly so delicious, fresh and well made, the orders were all correct and everything came out hot. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes Japanese food.

The owner is a very mean. I have never met someone so rude in my entire life. She told me I was fat and suggest I order one of the ‘lighter’ meals. Will not be going here again.

We have ordered delivery from Monkatsu before and really liked it so were looking forward to our restaurant visit. However the experience was not what we had hoped for - for some reason all of our food was delivered at once and it barely fit on the table. They also brought 2 incorrect sushi rolls of the 3 we ordered and we had a few other odd interactions with the servers during the meal. I really want to like this local place but at this time I am doubtful that we will return.

Our meal for three was very expensive at £59 and was barely enough. They forgot to send the endamame beans and told me I had to claim the £4.50 back from Deliveroo. I chose Prawn Katsu with Salmon Teriyaki which was tasty but the salmon was very overcooked. The others had Salmon Teriyaki and Chicken Yakisoba. I won’t rush back.

Went on a Sunday lunch. The food was ok... The beef teriyaki with fried boiled egg on rice was interesting, although more like a beef stew (I'm no expert, maybe that is a good thing. The gyōza and dude pickle were very good. Service was fast and attentive.

Best chicken katsu curry I've ever had

The sushi here is so Flavourful and beautifully presented. The staff are so incredibly attentive and wonderful. I would definitely recommend this place, extremely family friendly and the food is amazing, food was prepped and served so fast as well. Squid Karaage Kushi and sushi platter were really tasty and decently priced. Definitely worth the fresh sushi.

Ordered via deliveroo and was incredibly disappointed, they packed the ramen noodles with the stock, and the chicken Katsu with the sauce. So everything tasted of soft mush. I have. I idea what was going through their minds when they did this. Horrible.

We ordered four meals for 45 pounds for our family. One meal arrived crushed (no broth). Unedible noodles and pork that tastes like is past its sell by date. Spare yourself the disappointment.

Monkatsu serves delicious high-quality food and is good value for money given the generous portion sizes. It’s katsu curry, salmon teriyaki and prawn tempura are all authentically Japanese and I love the pickles that these come with. The sushi platter is exceptional! One gentle plea is that it would be great if Monkatsu could serve all this delicious takeaway fare in eco-friendly containers.

I recently discovered this place through a friend of mine and thought i would order something. I am a very fussy eater so was quite scared. I can not believe what i have been missing. This place is amazing. I have order loads of times now. Yes they are busy sometimes but i think nothing else will satisfy you once you know what your missing. Once lockdown is over i will have to pay a visit.

The salmon ramen was fowl, inedible and I ordered a burger instead. The rest of what we ordered was average at best.

Monkatsu!!! We enjoyed the combo pork tonkatsu + salmon terriyaki bowl. Also the Miso ramen. It is a nice and cozy Japanese resto in the neigborhood. 😊
