Amazing home cooked food.. highly recommend.. great atmosphere. Reasonably priced.. you need to visit a few times to try the different dishes.. suet pudding.. pie of the day.. and the ultimate corn beef ash.. 10/10

Whilst a lovely building, it was cold. The door was left open, in January. The food was lovely. Homemade Sunday lunch was delicious. The ice cream dessert for £6 was served in a ramekin with 3 scoops of ice cream. Lovely ice cream but the scoops were tiny. The dark haired waitress was miserable. Didn’t once ask if everything was ok and struggled to thank us when we paid. Made to feel like we were an inconvenience by all the staff apart from one of them. To top it off a 13% service charge was added. It was not mentioned on presentation of the bill, although we noticed afterwards that it mentioned at the bottom of the menu that a discretionary service charge would be added. I guess we should have read the menu right to the bottom. From experience usually this is mentioned when the bill is given. We could have declined to pay but it wasn’t offered. Won’t be returning.

Disgracefully high prices for drinks. I was charged £34.45 for two single gins, a pint of bitter and a bottle of Corona. I would avoid the place unless you are made of money. I emailed them to give them a chance to redeem the situation but they didn't even respond 🤬

Food and service was good here. But, while the restaurant is set in great and unusual historical pub, the tiled walls and large open bar area make the restaurant too noisy and difficult fir chatover food, especially as the bar was heaving. The toilets downstairs need some attention, really scruffy and rather smelly.

Another of Manchester's little gems. A long, narrow pub that's retained it's ornate interior. Really is like going back in time We didn't eat there but they have a restaurant or 'chop house' (Google it) at the back Staff behind the bar were great, fantastic spot

Just a two night stay in Manchester and found this amazing pub through tiktok. The atmosphere was quite nice, both for drinks and for food, as the pub is split into two to cater for both. The food was great. Greatest pub food we've had in a while. The food was a bit costly. Came around 70 quid for two with starter and drink included, and a service fee. Otherwise, a definite must visit if you're visiting the Manchester city core.

They are the most expensive place to drink charging £40 for pint larger and three gin and tonics

I had a lovely Sunday roast here—perfectly cooked, flavourful, and exactly what you’d hope for in a rainy Sunday cozy. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal. However, the service left something to be desired; it felt inattentive. Overall, a great place for food and ambiance, but the service could use some improvement

Food was okay, a little pricey. Drinks are good and loved the ambiance. They throw in a 13% service fee, don’t care for that.

Historic pub with a lovely atmosphere and great food. The corned beef hash and the apple and blackberry crumble did not disappoint!

Had the traditional beef hash which was quite nice, my wife had the pork belly which was a bit over done. Service was pretty good, but over all the meals are quite poor value as they are on the expensive side for what you get, which is below average quality. The beer was good but a limited choice compared to others in Manchester. I'd say it needs to improve, the quirky setting is probably it's only real selling point at the moment.

Good restaurant with cooked dishes First part a counter for a drink then a restaurant where it is better to reserve. We ate there on a Saturday evening without any problem. A sign said arrive to eat before 8:30 p.m. Service a little long. Don't forget that you have to add the service for around $10 for 2. I recommend eating something other than fish and chips but it's also possible...

Visiting Manchester and visited this restaurant with my girlfriend. Was a great visit and food was very good value for money. Haddock was great and mirrored many of my local seaside towns standards. Was served by Allie and Molly and they were both very hospitable. Thankyou for great service

Popped in here while on a stay in Manchester and walking by it. Pleasantly surprised at wonderfully delish food! The place is like stepping back in time with an atmosphere from the turn of the last century.

Old fashioned/proper pub in central Manchester . Can get a bit cramped but excellent atmosphere and food

Food was OK, went for something English, but menu seemed limited in that respect, daily pie was African chicken I think 🤔. The restaurant area was cold, cutlery not so shiny, and 13% service charge added on at the end, no itemised bill provided when paying, so that had us trying to work things as nobody saw the small print. Probably wouldn't bother returning here to be honest.

This is a small bar with "posh" pub food. They have all the classic favourites like fish and chips or ham, egg and chips but all made very fancy. It's hard to explain without visiting but it's worth the trip and a new favourite spot for food. Service is amazing and they will take great care of you.

What an amazing place. I was hungry, we were walking past looking for somewhere but I wanted something a little more traditional as there are plenty of Italian and tapas style places but few traditional so we took a flyer with this and was not disappointed. My wife, who is not vegetarian, had blue cheese and mushroom pie. Which was so tasty. In the absence of a good shepherds pie I had a suet pudding stuffed with pulled brisket - amazing and certainly puts a lining one ones stomach. All washed down with a very nice large glass of tempranillo. Even got a larger table without a problem when I asked. Very nice friendly and excellent service in a very interesting atmosphere. We will come again

This place has been around for a long time (since 1867 to be exact). So they know what they're doing. The front section is actually a pretty ordinary pub section. A smattering of tables & ledges along the wall to rest your beer. We had a couple pints prior to our reservation time. It is just a few short steps to the restaurant proper at the back. It is a very attractive art nouveau inspired setting. Lovely tiles, well worn tables and a comfy feel. They currently have a terrific photo exhibit of well knoiw Mancunians (Sir Alex Feguson looks great !). We both had their daily pie with potatoes on the side. Solid and satisfying, just the way it should be. Good marks for the gravy. The fare is traditional, don't expect anything new fangled. Our server was polite & knowledgeable. Four glasses of wine, two mains & a service charge clocked in at 75 GBP which seemed quite reasonable. Stop in for a comfortable evening of beer, wine & a savoury pie.

Very nice pub, recommended for the place! The atmosphere is very nice, the place is divided into two zones - the pub zone and the zone where people eat. We ordered traditional pudding and veal according to a secret recipe, both dishes were decent, satisfying and at the same time had their own characteristics. For dessert we ordered traditional brownie with ice cream, it was very tasty! The design of the place is worth special attention, it is nice that there are candles at each table, the staff is also very nice!

the building and decoration is a must see but the food and service was disapointed, egg wasn't cooked, bacon was rock hard, 13%service was added to the final bill and dessert was very long to arrive, I've seen the place, I won't return.

Delicious elevated pub food! This was our first meal in the UK after traveling from the US and it was so tasty! Great food and great beer. The atmosphere is also very nice and cozy!

The food is so nice, full of flavor, aroma, it's easy to say that I'm delighted. The atmosphere, the waiters are top, but the food 🤤 when you come to the city for the first time and try it, you won't eat anywhere else 🫶

This evening was superb, Kofi was excellent in all aspects, the meals were appreciated and delicious and the fact that our Friends dog was accepted was so lovely, our extended family Colly enjoyed the evening. It was a mixed Meeting stroke social and we were all happy with the awesome quality and kindness 🙏🏼

The hygiene standards weren’t great and after eating, I went home feeling unwell with a stomach ache and was sick.

A little disappointed with the food & service arrived at 12.30. Ordered lunch (1 course) food did not arrive until 1.20 I nearly got up & left. Great location though if in the city centre and are not in a rush

Fantastic pub - end of !!! Whilst we cat sit for our daughter who lives up here, we will always now visit this magical pub that we only discovered today!! It's full of people our age lol . . . 😊 Ed, the bar manager is also a great asset to this beautiful old establishment! Can't wait for a revisit as it's our kind of boozer! Nigel & Claire 😊

Fantastic food, love the old decor

Amazing place. The staff were polite and professional. The menu contained something for everyone. I had read really good things about their corned beef hash so I had to try it. The corned beef hash was absolutely amazing. Some of the best I ever had. The sauce that was drizzled over it provided a nice contrast to the hash. I would definitely order it again.

Went for Sunday dinner, the staff were scruffy and slovenly, the food was ok and plentiful,, the area where we ate wasn’t clean, ie the table and floor, and the toilets and the walk down to them were disgusting/filthy, get a grip guys

Is it pub or restaurant- doesn't really matter as it works well as both. Decent beer and great food with pies, fish and chips and ...corned beef hash - its very good.

Stopped in for some food before a concert. A few draft beers unavailable but only really wanted the food. Steak and Ale pie and chips was lovely, piping hot and well worth the money. Few blokes came in for the beer garden and they were very disappointed to hear that it was no longer open

Terrible experience, no acknowledgment when we came in until 10 minutes of waiting and we’d booked well in advance. Mains came out cold Sunday lunch, soft roast potatoes, fatty cuts of meat and tasted like instant gravy. Nobody came to check if the food was ok and had an awful sarcastic waiter he was blonde and scruffy with no customer service skills when I mentioned the food was t great he rolled his eyes and said he has a lot to get on with and do we want the bill now! what an AWFUL place we will not be going back please avoid. There are some great eateries in Manchester this was not one of them

Lovely food, it's pub food with a modern sophisticated twist, the steak was cooked exactly how I requested it and had been seasoned well, we ordered the crab cakes that were divine and had just the perfect amount of chilli. Staff are all very friendly and enthusiastic about what they were doing, 10/10 would go again. My only piece of advice is that there is a huge service charge (by northern standards) we recommend you do what we did and get them to remove it from your bill and then tip your server directly with cash as we highly doubt the staff see a penny of the "service charge" Other than that perfect restaurant 👍

...stumbled in here for a quick pint however on Saturday afternoon At 4pm it was heaving. Heavily congested. Noisy. Loud. If you're after bustle then this is your place.

I've visited this pub a few times. Beautiful building, lovely atmosphere and nice food. A Manchester institution!

This has to be one of the worst experiences we have had having built our expectations from previous reviews. Having asked for two different main courses and told twice that they had run out is totally unacceptable. The main menu dishes are limited in number anyway so to have two dishes not available is quite something. You would have thought that waiters would have been told to mention this when handing the menus out so as to avoid disappointment or prevent the customer from committing to stay.

Loved it here. Was visiting Manchester for the Great Manchester run. So wasn't sure where to eat. This place was first class, lovely choice of food and was tasty. Friendly staff and atmosphere. Wouldn't hesitate to go back next time we're in Manchester.

I had scotch egg starter and the corned beef hash main course. The food was very nice, but £10 for a scotch egg and nearly £20 for corned beef hash, then supplemented by a 13% service charge, was about double what I think it was worth. If you are going to add a service charge, then it should be no more than 10% standard, but 13% on top of already over-inflated prices means that unfortunately, I won't be rushing back. Which is a shame because I liked the ambience and enjoyed the food.

It’s always a tradition for us to eat at the Chop House each time we visit Manchester. However, we were so disappointed when we visited with friends last weekend. Food was only average, service was just ok and we were surprised with the added service charge. Expensive lunch when we didn’t particularly enjoy. Sorry, but we won’t be visiting again ☹️.

The first impression is that the toilet really stinks. I had to sit near the entrance door to breathe more or less fresh air. They couldn't eat anything, so I gave the rating for the food for the beer, which was not tasty at all.

Reserved a table for Sunday lunch. Food was amazing, we both chose the roast beef (Yorkshire pudding was the best I've had in a long time). The staff serving were great , we were seated and served really quickly. The only negative that I would say is that the toilets are down stairs and could do with a renovation but that wouldn't stop me from returning at all next time I'm in Manchester.

Pub specializing in meat, very traditional and cozy, the dishes we tried were very good, both the beef and the pork, good service and keep in mind that the kitchen closes at nine at night. It's not cheap, but it was very good, as the beer wasn't very cold.

Had the chicken supreme for a quick lunch, it was DELICIOUS!

The most delicious pub food we could find in Manchester! The restaurant is very unique and beautiful. Being there felt like traveling back in time. I had the steak & ale pie and my girlfriend had fish & chips. Both dishes were rather filling and absolutely delicious. The cask ale was also great!

What a fantastic pub. Lovely atmosphere and attentive staff. We called for a drink and decided to eat as well. The food was amazing, so tasty and good size portions. I had the scotch egg for starter . The ox cheek was melt in the mouth and delicious. It was hard to choose a main as they all sounded wonderful but decided on the corned beef hash. Wow so tasty, if you’ve only ever experienced tinned corned beef, then you can’t begin to understand this beautiful beef creation! It was a taste sensation and every mouthful as good as the first. One of those dishes you don’t want to end.

Truly great spot to stop for a pint. Gorgeous exterior, really stands out from the street as you approach, although it’s quite narrow so it’s easy to miss. Warm, rustic interior. Plenty of draft options but some solid cask handles, including TT Landlord and Boltmaker. Had to go for the latter. Well-priced, well-poured pint. Front room is for drinking while the back room is for dining.

Usually I really enjoy eating here. Unfortunately, on this occasion, service was slow and when the food arrived it was lukewarm. I would normally speak up, but we were due at the Royal Exchange Theatre for a performance, so could not waste time asking for the order to be rectified. If the restaurant had been busy, I'd be willing to forgive it, but we were one of only 3 tables eating and it was 12:30 in the afternoon.
