Excellent place , good fun especially for birthday party , Great food , like a bbq , use your fingers, lemon water provided , try mead or local beers , Place is styled on medieval times, decor is a very authentic look with its own history.

Too long waiting for the drinks and double long waiting for the food. Other than that it was okay.

We have been coming to the Meadery for over 40 years. The website is very misleading! I checked in advance and saw it clearly stated in capital letters they DID NOT accept bookings. We arrived at 6.35 pm to be told that the restaurant was full as bookings are taken for 50% of the capacity. When I rechecked the website I saw that if I had scrolled further down, the first information was completely contradicted. The result was two very disappointed young children as it would have been too late for us to wait 90 miniites for a table.

Food is basic but done very well and there is plenty of it. Beautiful building. But the staff are the stars, we were looked after by Claire (the sailmaker) who was absolutely brilliant, so kind, so funny and made us feel so welcome.

Very nice place to dine. But dark and load atmosphere. What us really frustrating is they add a 10% service charge to the bill which we were not aware of, plus they have the cheek to place a saucer next to the till for tips. Make sure you read the small print on the menu.

Food was good and atmosphere was fine but you need to check your bill very carefully if you are in a big group. 2nd time in six months we have been overcharged by £40+

The decor is amazing and creates an amazing historical atmosphere The food was good but I ordered the scampi which was nice but after I got them I realised I probably should have ordered the chicken. I ordered the buzzy bee desert which was incredible. Not as nice as the other meaderies but still great. Would recommend.

Go regularly but have never waited so long for service. Usually very quick but not that night.

The only reason I am giving a 3 for the food is the price has gone up by a considerable amount, for instance the prawn cocktail used to come with a warm wholemeal bread roll and butter, not anymore! and there's more lettuce than prawns! The wine is quite expensive ie £5.60 for 1 glass, when considering you can get it cheaper at the supermarket £11.00 for a 75 cl bottle. I'm not complaining about the taste of the food it's great. If you want the atmosphere don't sit on tables 36 or 37 as you are put on the level between the waiting area and the main dining room, feeling like an unwanted guest at a wedding reception. If in the main dining room it's great. I would suggest removing the tables on this level as the meadery has always been about the experience , at least since I've been going there from the 1970s. Do us a favour and get back the values you used to have. On the last note the service is always good.

Firstly if you want to go to this place I highly recommend you book to avoid disappointment as its always very busy!What a lovely evening lovely food hot and all served together Mushrooms are addictive,Chicken juicey and tender could not fault the food!vibrant atmosphere there was 5 birthdays while we was there but didn't have to wait for a long time for food.Our Wench what a lovely person don't know her name dark shoulder length hair and glasses,what a credit she is to the place went above and beyond to make sure we all had our food and was happy Thanks again to her!we will return very soon 😀

Very busy but pleasant but due to the shape of the room the acoustics are loud

Quite a disappointing visit to be honest. The food was nothing special to warrant the price, portion sizes were pretty standard but the service was okay. I felt like the theme was a bit gimmicky given the latest top 40 pop hits were blasting through the speakers instead of 'ye olde strings' or similar... We arrived (a party of 6) with some elderly folks who struggled to read the menu with the dim lighting and only a single flickering battery operated candle to aid. Even though there were so many available tables, some of which were much bigger with a lot more space, we found ourselves cramped together around our assigned seats (two small tables pushed together) that would have better suited a smaller party. Also worth mentioning, we noticed that another party of people followed us in, but were for some reason asked to wait in the bar area downstairs. Given the amount of available places they could have easily occupied upstairs, I'm left to presume it was to sell them 'pre drinks', which is a little saddening, although they could have been waiting for more people to arrive The salad bar was quite a nice touch, with lots to choose from, I can't help but feel this should be a refillable option though as extra helping of salad were chargeable. I personally ordered the ribs and left hungry, but the chicken in the rough option looked quite filling and tasty.

We booked a table because we had a couple of dogs with us, and the tables were out of the way. Food was very good.

A unique atmosphere and experience for all ages. Best Meade ever and so lucky to have this in Newlyn.

Great food, but really poor service, staff just quickly place food down no expectations into what we are receiving, had too ask more than once for help.

Been coming here to eat for years, after my recent visit I was a little disappointed as the service was a bit slow and the atmosphere just wasn't right with pop music playing in the back. Other than that enjoyed the food.

Been coming here for 30 years and to me it is the only Meadery for me, staff are always friendly, the service is brilliant and the atmosphere is always fantastic! Our favourite restaurant in Cornwall!

First time I'd been to this meadery,it was busy,and a lot of stairs to climb to get to our table,but the food and the service was excellent, will definitely go back.

The worse part of the medieval experience is finding a parking place! We were in a Camper and found past the harbour next to the RNLI building 4 hours for £3.20 using RingGo App. So, this is my 5 visit over the years and its always a must when I visit this end of Cornwall. Just one glass of Mead is enough if your driving. Always have the Chicken and chips (Salad Bar also fantastic) it’s the best Chicken I’ve had, would love to know the secret of the crispy outside with lovely soft juicy chicken within. This time I had the Fish Fries as a starter. Wow! So good!! Must have been caught that morning! Makes sense it’s next to the biggest fishing fleet in Cornwall. Go! You will not be disappointed!! 😎👍🏻

The Newlyn Meadery was a lot of fun! The chicken was a great hit with everyone and the salad bar was quite good. We would recommend the salad bar over the chips. The atmosphere is very Medieval, dark and it got quite warm upstairs with all the people. The birthday singing was extremely loud but fun for the patrons. We arrived at 5:20 and had to wait as they don't open until 6 pm, but it was good as the lineup/queue on a Sunday evening was quote long by the time it opened at 6 pm. A good time was had and I would recommend the Newlyn Meadery for a fun time with some fairly good food!

This place has been going for more than 50 years, but he medieval theme the mead and chicken are a must see / have experience if you are in the area. Queues start forming half an hour before they open, and the menu could probably have just the one item on it, if you aren’t having the chicken then you are making a mistake (Or I suppose vegetarian?) There is outdoor seating, and getting parked nearby is a bit of a pain. But we’ll worth a visit.

Great fun place. Portions are very good. Straightforward, no nonsense noisy medieval feeding barn. Mead is delicious but strong. You have been warned! Great service and the desserts are ridiculously big and my kids loved them. Need a long walk along Newlyn sea front to walk off all the calories however!

Lovely staff very friendly cannot fault them. I was however very disappointed at frozen squid instead of fresh. I don't understand how they don't cook fresh seafood being right next to a major UK port

Absolutely loved the place and it's fish n' chips with mead. The atmosphere was also really fun and was constantly vibrant. There's also a free salad bar to get refills at which is really nice. Would definitely recommend going with a group of friends as it can be really busy but the alcohol is top tier. It's overall a great place to be at and the staff are very nice as well!

If you like meaderies this is the Queen. Quite atmospheric old cinema with subdued lighting, food consistently good. I generally go for the fish fries, but chicken in the rough is their classic! But don't eat here too regularly unless you have a season ticket to Derriford!

Please do NOT reassure customers thier takeaway order is on the way without actually checking it is! Waited 45 minutes for my takeaway last night which failed to arrive. After several reassurances it was on the way with my number taken they finally admitted to losing my order which I had paid for at the counter! To add insult to injury no apology was given but they offered to take my order AGAIN! I don't think so! Refunded and left fuming to return empty handed to my wife waiting very patiently in the car. Evening ruint do not recommend

Nice atmosphere and great staff but the food was very disappointing as only serving deep fried food. In a fishing village you would expect some fresh fish on the menu.

Back after lockdown..I love that you can now book a table..the waitresses were on top form.. FOOD DELICIOUS

Friendly staff and food value food. Noisy and dark so might not be for you if your hearing or sight aren't 100%. Dessert menu is a dream!

Phenomenal!!!! Never disappoints, excellent food, great staff, amazing atmosphere, there was a birthday celebration when we were there, the crowd nearly took the roof off ... but if you're looking for cheap and nasty fast food then this isn't the place for you

Went recently, was able to sit down for our meal which was great. Service was excellent and the food was delicious, very pleased overall and will definitely eat there again in the future.

Always loved this place as we have been going down for years. Due to covid they are operating on a 50% booking and 50% walk in. We arrived at 6.15 and there was already a queue to get in. Luckily we made it in, but this shows just how popular Newlyn Meadery is. They are also only open from Thursday to Sunday. The food is always well cooked and plentiful. My wife had mushrooms for starter and scampi for main, both well cooked and piled high. I had the squid for starter which was so tasty and the fish fries for main, again delicious. We had half a litre of mead liquor and some time after stumbled off in to the night.

As a family, we have been visiting since 1974 & have always had an enjoyable time

We weren't able to make a reservation but were told 50% of their restaurant was being left open for walk-ins which worked well for us as we got there early (15 mins or so) and were able to get a table straight away when doors opened. A really unique experience and fantastic mead options available. Chicken was tasty if a little dry on the inside - but it went very well with the garlic dip! The portions are on the large side, so go hungry! Very friendly staff and was lovely to sit in a booth to soak up the atmosphere. I would also have loved to hear some medieval style music as opposed to chart toppers but an enjoyable experience nonetheless.

This is a charming (albeit ahistorical) medieval themed restaurant, though aside from the "bar wenches", don't go expecting a full Medieval Times affair á la Cable Guy, (which is kind of a good thing for me because I can't stand forced jollity of any sort). That said, piping out some medieval music instead of chart pop might have complimented the ambiance better. The food choice isn't huge, the medieval style big slabs of meat on the bone thing seems to be in keeping with the theme. The main choices are battered half chicken or rack of BBQ ribs with chips and/or salad and a modest choice of sides; some veggie options but this is limited to vegan thai curry, if I recall. Be warned the ribs are tasty but very messy and combined with the chips they are very filling. No comment on the desserts because we had no room for it. Drinks wise, mead is obviously available. The mead wine is lovely though tastes closer to mulled wine than mead. Small selection of ciders and ales/lagers also available. The staff are polite; I should say well done to the lady who had to deal with a particularly rude customer and was somewhat shaken. Be aware also that most evenings, even during the week, are busy. You may therefore have to wait half an hour or so for a table if you're walk-in. Covid-19 adjustments are sensible, though as with everywhere this depends on the clientele being at least half as sensible as the staff, easier said than done when people get rowdy after a few. All in all though, if you want the novelty of the medieval theme and wholesome family fun, or a birthday outing, you could do much worse.

Very quirky, nice enough good. More of a gimmicky night out but fun non the less. Food quality probably not the best but the place it self and lovely staff make up for the foods short comings

been coming here for close to 32 years and last night was the first time ive ever left dissapointed whilst i appreciate the situation ,Covid 19 etc i feel like ive been under fed and over charged,like i said i understand these are hard times ,but when things return to normal i hope you make the necessary adjustments ,or local people like myself and my family ,plus everyone else i reccomend may well eat else where sorry for the rant but i felt obliged to say something.

A beefeater set in medieval times, but with slightly better food and plenty of it. The mead and mead fruit wines are scrummy, and very reasonably priced. Be aware, they do sing happy birthday often.

Haven't been since i was a kid. Am very happy to report after 20 years this place is still amazing. Chicken in the rough is still the best and only choice for me. Service is spot on, prices are very reasonable and portion sizes very generous.

Back to the old days lovely food

First time visiting last sunday, 3 of us, 2 adults 1 child. The staff were amazing and the food was well above my expectations. In fact, I go as far as saying the food was excellent. I was put of meaderies I few tears ago (not by this one) but can safely say I/we will definitely be returning to this one. A***

When planning a trip to Cornwall you should make the time to go here. Great service and atmosphere and single but wonderful food (chicken and chips is simple but oh so amazing). Remember to buy a bottle of BlackBerry mead.. and thank me later.

Fried chicken was dry, salad bar was poorly stocked, "medieval" decor was half-hearted. Avoid.

Staff were great but the food was awful. I understand it's cheap family grub but it was quite bad. The ribs I ordered were disgusting and smelt minging. They were clearly microwaved. They did take them off the bill which was good of them. Probably wont be returning.

Eating in a dimly lit restaurant using your fingers? What's not to like. This is probably my family's favourite meadery, I've been coming here for decades now, and never had a bad visit. Prices are very reasonable, and the staff are friendly. Highly recommended.
