Old Ferry Boat in Huntingdonshire

Went on a Saturday in January, was 3 of us and we had a lovely time. Food was perfectly sized portioned and was decently valued. 2 of us had beef and ale pie with chips and I had mac and cheese. Situated in a quiet village, just outside St Ives, next to the river ouse, a very old and quaint bar and restaurant. Atmosphere wise, it was very quiet, had a few loud couples, but that hapoens everywhere. Service wise. They were all respectable, friendly and personable. But they did spend about 5 minutes away from the bar at a time. All in all, loved it and definitely would go again.

Food very average steak overcooked and not of a good quality..lamb shank hot on arrival but soon lost its temperature breakfast had items missing and sausage not of a good quality bacon rather chewy

We popped in for coffee, but decided to stay for lunch as the atmosphere was so nice What a beautiful pub and such a lovely friendly team We opted for the 2 course lunch menu Delicious! We will definitely return

Room was basic but clean and warm.the breakfast was ok not a lot of choice.no sign of the pastries that was on the menu Sausage not of a good quality.had a meal in the restaurant steak was ordered medium rare but came well done.but it was so thin you couldn't have cooked it that way and not the best quality.oversll an average experience but will stay again but skip breakfast and probably have fish and chips in the restaurant

Amazing fish and chip supper! Popped in this evening for a quick bite and the fish was beautifully cooked, didn’t stay for desserts as it was huge and filling

Nine local tennis players enjoyed a very good lunch and the service from Lewis and Shannon was excellent thank you.

15 of us, and everyone was happy with their meals, of which there was a wide selection. The service was lovely, friendly and prompt, and the pub itself is beautiful. In addition, prices are very reasonable. There is plenty of parking, and the situation on the river is perfect. We will all be back! This was a find we want to tell people about.

Booked a table for Sunday lunch. The wife me and the golden Harley. Lunch was superb the turkey and lamb shank were cooked perfectly. Vegetables nicely done not soft and squishy but not hard. All the staff were happy helpful and very professional. A very enjoyable experience even though my boy did bark a little bit. I would highly recommend the Apple and blackberry crumble pie. Thanks to all and we will be back soon.

Lovely historic olde pub in a great location by the river, shame about the food. Unfortunately this place has really gone down hill since being taken over by a chain. The main meals are average, the deserts are disappointing. What a shame, as it could be so lovely!

Staff welcoming and pleasant. But the Food oh so poor. Bearing in mind we went to eat and therefore the food was our main focus. Why should we complain when it’s was obvious the kitchen had no respect for the customer. Whoever quality checks the food leaving the kitchen it’s their job to make sure food is edible. After ordering we were told there was no hummus, surely ‘chef’ could open a can of chic peas and blitz them up a bit? Secondly a while after ordering no Nachos! ‘Chef’ didn’t order enough bags of tortilla chips! Mains arrived, the risotto’s were ‘mushy’ lump’ difficult to make out the grains of rice, not freshly made, been microwaved to death, probably reheated from 2 days before, really not like risotto at all. Macaroni cheese microwaved to death, dried up sauce and looked like the macaroni cheese bought in cans! These poor dishes were obviously poor from visual inspection so any of the staff involved should have said ‘we can’t serve that!’ If you can’t get someone to cook food to a standard and be proud of it every time they need to be checked all the time. Complaining and returning food to a kitchen that has no respect for customers is dangerous because you never know what’ll be in the food that comes back.

Thank you for a wonderful Christmas Day meal , it was amazing from our starters to the mouthwatering dessert ,staff were attentive without being in our faces,everybody was friendly , service was perfect ,even our little dog got treats ,so we definitely recommend this experience ,we will be back during the year and Xmas day ,thank you xxx

Lovely location. Went for a Xmas break. The room is basic but clean. The food was OK, some of it was better than other dishes. The staff are lovely and friendly.

We’ve just had the festive menu here (Saturday evening) with friends, which we were looking really forward to , but were very disappointed. The pub is lovely but the food is just abysmal. The Christmas menu which we paid a deposit for prior, was just all kinds of wrong. We’d had to go in person to book it a few days before because they needed our food choices via the app but it just wouldn’t save the selections. One of the meals (traditional roast turkey dinner) was supposed to be gluten free, but wasn’t, so it went back. As they had to assemble a gluten free one, it came out ages after the other meals which were then going cold. The other meals were overcooked steaks with no sauce which didn’t come out with the meals either, so we waited ages for that. The Gf meal arrived with a tiny bit of gravy so it was dry and tasteless. The deserts were the same. There were some other things wrong but I can’t be bothered to list them all! A thoroughly disappointing experience. The signs were there when we arrived with glasses stacked up on the bar and the few staff who were there did their best, but with no obvious manager and delays in the kitchen it was just bad. 20% was taken off the bill, but we’d rather have had a good meal or not bothered. This is the second time we’ve had a bad experience here so we’re not chancing a third. Whilst we’d love to support a local pub we won’t be going back.

Beautiful looking pub. I took my kids to the Elf Workshop organised by the pub and it was fantastic. Chelsea was brilliant, she really engaged with all the children and got them in the Christmas spirit. She made sure all the kids had everything they needed to do the activities and made them all feel welcome. The food was lovely and the portions were generous. Looking forward to going again.

Racist and rude staff. Wouldn’t seat or serve an Indian family when half the pub was empty.

Only popped in for a quick drink on a circular walk by the river. It was an exceptionally quiet day, i was made to feel very welcome by the young man behind the bar. We came for lunch, the pub wasn't busy at all. The food is truly awful the chef needs some major re training or sacking. Every order was wrong. Won't be back.

Not Michelin 5 Star you understand, but wonderfully well cooked pub food with lovely flavours and twists.. we're fond of the rosemary salted fries! The place has character, feels cosy and well kept, and the staff are lovely! And of course Greene King's Level Headed is a lovely brew!

Great place to stay with some history behind it. Rooms sizes really varied, noticeable difference between the smallest and the largest room but understand it’s difficult to standardise in an older building. Julia was really chatty at breakfast which was great for us and she talked us through some of the history. Only issue was the water as it took a while to warm and then went to extreme hot, wasted a lot of water getting it to the right temp

The team are friendly and welcoming, especially Julia at breakfast. Food was lovely in the evening and at breakfast. Hotel rooms vary in sizes, stayed in a small room, colleague stayed in a larger room with a bath. Great place to stay with lots of history around it.

Amazing food & customer care. The ambiance of the place is delightful. Great in the summer as its right next to the river or winter time with beautiful open fire place's. You won't be disappointed.

Lovely pub next to the riverside. We stopped for a drink whilst out for a paddle on a SUP and kayak. Friendly staff and cosy interior as well as plenty of outdoor tables I'd the sun's out.

This Pub/Hotel is a must...nestled on the banks of The Great River Ouse Great atmosphere, food (great choices well presented hot and with good portions), and welcome.... Great place to be whether it is hot and sunny and you sit in the garden or when raining and sitting inside etc..

We booked a table for our family 2 weeks in advance to celebrate a birthday and also because it was a Sunday and we wanted the roast dinner options. We arrived on time but our table wasn't ready. It was very busy so was to be expected. Once seated we had to wait to be served as it was so busy. When we ordered, we were told they had run out of beef so 3 of our party went for the roast turkey dinner at £13.99 a meal we had high expectations. Sadly these were missed placed, the larger dinner plates arrived with scarely any food on them. The turkey hidden by 3 very small potatoes, 5 pieces of sliced carrot and a small amount of cauliflower. (Clearly overpriced( Huge disappointment. It was clear that these were simply remains scrapped together to cover. We decided not to order desert as overall a big disappointment. In summary the pub itself is in a lovely location and the interior is very quaint typical country pub. Unfortunately it is not professionally run, not enough staff for busy periods and no forward planning. In our case they could have asked for forward meal bookings so they could ensure enough food was available. I would not recommend this pub.

We stayed here with our camper. The pub dates back to 1050 and many old fragments have been preserved. Too bad there was a flood so we couldn't walk our dogs

Nice new menu and very friendly staff that are always helpful. We run our mid week Speaking club at this venue twice a month called Huntingdonshire Speakers club. There can be 12 to 20 of us, and the food is always good and on time. The conference room at the back is great for this size of meeting, and can wmeasily hold many more. I have been to a children's party with my kids there and it was fun. Sunday lunch is very good. There are reasonable price dishes for those on a budget. It's right next to a beautiful river with a nuce big beer garden (always busy in Summer). It's good to book ahead in busy periods and for large groups. It's also the oldest pub In the country with part of foundations dating back to early 500's. It has a thousand year old Ghost that walks once a year. And it's age and older building makes it very cosy to spend a winters evening having something to eat. One of my favourite pubs to go to in Cambridgeshire.

One of my favourite places to eat. Very nostalgic, lovely location. Just mind your head when walking around inside as the ceilings are extremely low.

We use the Old Ferry Boat Inn twice a month to host our meetings and they never let us down. Tonight they had a new menu and the food was amazing. They have some special offers on, too, so I got a proper bargain. Thanks team!!

Come here for my wedding anniversary the food was cold. The wife had to send her food back because it was notcooked and then heated up and the chips were all hard and the desserts were crap had eaten mess and there was one little tiny bit of meringue in the mess will not recommend this or spend no more money in this pub ever again.

Lovely dinner , the place is amazing and the surroundings areas . We had yummy food we very much enjoyed it .We had our puppy with us and he enjoyed meeting other dogs . Apology for his barking . On ordering our meals, we were told that there was no pork, no malbec and no Heineken Zero, and apparently many other items on the menu were unavailable due to the menu being changed on the 19th I went for the scampi which was very small and tasteless, a glass of merlot which was not very good and my friend some sort of low alcoholic ale, which was nothing like the Heineken zero she had wanted. All in all an awful experience, we weren't told when we arrived that so much was unavailable and there were no alternattions on the menus we were given. We will not be returning, shame as the pub is in a lovely setting. A very disappointing lunch, heard many other customers moaning too.

Excellent place from food to service. Just enjoyed 2 days here on our boat in beautiful surroundings with wonderful food and 5* service. The food was fabulous. Free 48 hour moorings. The staff could not be anymore polite, professional or helpful. My husband mentioned we would be eating in the pub in the evening. They started to get busy with bookings and one of the team, Shannon, went out of her way to walk over to our boat and ask us if we wanted to book a table. This really restored my faith in hospitality! Thank you Ferry Boat for a fabulous few days with you. 😀

Food was good as always, though it has been better. Service was fast though the server kept calling us "guys" which I found most disrespectful considering there were no men in our party.

We have been a few times before and have had good food especially the Sunday roast. However the food today was rubbish. Scampi that was tiny like a child's portion and burger cheese and bacon better at McDonald's. To top it all we had to change pint 2x as was flat. Will think again about going there. Disappointed.

A beautiful place, cozy, quiet, you breathe calm. We spent the night in our car and in the morning we had a super classic breakfast from the area, generous and very delicious dishes. They allow dogs. When we visit England again, we will return. Thanks to the restaurant for offering this service.

Omg what a treat ...moored our boat up for a quick drink...ended up having a full sunday roast...nicest in a long time...everything about this place makes it a must do visit...(oldest pub in Britain)..

It's such a picturesque location. The original location of the building is over 1500 years old and full of stories, and the staff are very nice and friendly.

Lovely food and pleasant staff. They have a good choice of gluten-free food. Plenty of outside space with good seating. Highly recommend it.

I guess it's all about location and there's no doubt this old place is located in one of the most beautiful parts of Cambridgeshire. Overlooking the Great Ouse, this ancient fenland Inn serves mainly boaters and the odd local. The garden is a great spot in the summer and it makes a good watering hole for anyone who can either float, hike, ride or drive. Unfortunately under the bonnet, it's a pretty standard Green King pub, with no local ales, no guest ales and a poor selection of rum (only 3). It dictates your tastes, rather than introduces and the Saturday staff were both sleepy and under confident. The chipped and dirty glasses only added to the sombre atmosphere inside, such a shame! Outside, it buzzed with dog walkers, kayakers, families and those looking for that quintessential, English Inn. I hope they were not as disappointed as us.

A fantastic old thatched pub down by the river, claims to be Englands oldest pub. It's Greene King so really well executed inside and outside, with a food menu that is good and affordable. Staff were great, friend efficient. We will definitely be going back.

I booked a function room at the Ferry Boat Inn for ~40 people for my Dad's 70th birthday party. Julie and Connor were very communicative, friendly and accomodating in the organisation. Despite having hurt his leg the week before, Lee, the head chef, couldn't do enough to help us. The food was good (potatoes with the salmon slightly too al dente!) and there were plenty of vegetarian options. I was able to go in beforehand and decorate the room, and the cakes we made were kept in the cold room until we needed them. We took along an amp and microphone and had some speeches and music. Staff were very attentive all evening and we had a great time. Thank you very much!

Fantastic bigger than expected pub with large outside garden to enjoy a drink with your furry friend. Before dinner took the dog for a walk along by the river by all the cute thatched houses. 5*

Around 30 of us from Europe and the UK met up for a family lunch. The food was reasonable and the staff were helpful and friendly.

Really disappointed at the lack of customer service received. I ordered two coffees, 2 cokes the guy behind the bar never once said please or thank you. He put down two coffees and the cokes. I asked for some milk for the two black coffees he put down he just looked at me and said that’s extra if you want milk. I said that I ordered what I belied to be two coffees not americanos. But he told me no an americano is a coffee. That I was wrong. The expresso cup of milk was an extra 75p There was no politeness at all and others at the bar commented about paying extra for a smile! What happened to a smile and a please and thank you? Having worked in hospitality I would have never spoken to a customer in this way. I would have certainly given the customer a choice at the time of ordering. Unfortunately when poring the milk in the warm coffee it split. No I didn’t bother returning, goodness knows how I would have been spoken to if I’d of asked for a fresh hot cup!

Went down the Ferry Boat for a couple of drinks. The place has been at rock bottom for a few years now but still continues to pull off the feat of plumbing new depths. Outside in the beer garden was an utter mess, litter everywhere, an overflowing rubbish bin and all tables with glasses and dinner plates not cleared away. On going inside the picture is the same - empty glasses lining practically the whole length of the bar. In the midst of this was displayed a sign listing about a dozen menu items that were unavailable. The lone member of staff was doing his best to serve customers queuing at the bar. Meanwhile a lady returned her table's empty plates to the bar, no doubt fed up waiting for someone to come and collect. The usual poor selection of beers on tap - Greene King IPA and Abbott - both undrinkable as far as I'm concerned. A few years ago a guest ale was always available, nearly always far preferable to the standard GK choices. What has happened to this? The depressing thing is this is not a one-off. Like most people in the village I hardly ever go to the Ferrby Boat these days but on each occasion I have it has been in this miserable state. The pub has been through a succession of managers in recent years, none of whom have managed to turn things round so it's clear Greene King are at fault. The Ferry Boat should be the flagship pub in the entire chain but the truth is they just don't care.

Not the best, came here for my birthday meal, the guy behind was extremely grumpy! Food was disappointing and lack of cutlery which was also dirty. Normally love coming here, but was really disappointed this time

I briefly visited the Old Ferry Boat this Sunday around 11AM with the intention of having coffee and perhaps a meal. According to their website, food service begins at 8AM on Sundays. Based on a previous visit where we didn't need a booking, we thought it would be fine to stop by with my mum, who had always wanted to visit. Seeing people seated at the outside tables when we turned up, we made our way inside. Unfortunately, this visit will be our last. Upon entering, I was shocked to be addressed from across the room by a staff member who informed us that food service only began at 12PM and asked if we had a booking. When we explained that we didn’t, they curtly told us that they were fully booked, and that was it. The three of us looked at each other in disbelief and confusion. As someone with extensive experience in customer service, I was appalled by the lack of basic courtesy. Speaking to us from a distance, the staff member showed a clear disinterest in our presence. There was no offer of a drink despite our travel to the establishment, no suggestion to book for a later time, and not even a simple greeting so we turned around and left very disappointed. It wasn't even the fact we didn't get what we came for that is the problem, it was how we were treated that was the issue. Whoever the staff member was on that day, Costa thanks you for our custom but instead of enjoying a lovely picturesque beer garden, we spent part of our morning staring at a car park in St Ives, sipping coffee from a chain café. This experience was deeply disappointing and poor reflection of a beautiful pub that could be so much more.

Lovely location and building. Overall lunch experience was disappointing. Crumb coated mushroom starter was partly cold. Pate starter had just one small piece of toast so had to ask for another piece to be able to enjoy the amount of pate. My partner and I both had Hunters Chicken but both were over cooked and quite tough. Cutlery blunt and tarnished. Mixture of many different chair types at dining tables which, whilst charming in some respects, proved uncomfortable and made the dining area tired looking. Unfortunately not many staff on day of booking so service was rather slow. Such a shame for a building of such age and character. Would love to visit again but things would need to improve.

Had a lovely time here on a Wednesday lunchtime. Staff were very friendly and helpful, service was extremely quick and food was beautifully presented and delicious. Some items on the very extensive menu weren't available due to supply issues but there were plenty of alternatives. Great value.

Being from the local area we've visited this pub many times over the years and it saddens me to see how much it's gone downhill. It's a beautiful pub in a fabulous location but has been very let down by the frequently changing managers over recent years. We popped in for food on a lovely warm Friday night, it was busy but not overly so with plenty empty tables. We hadn't booked as we've never needed to except for Mother's Day and such like however we were told they weren't taking any walk ins. Given the warm weather and the start of school holidays, one would expect them to be better prepared, instead we had dinner at another lovely riverside pub half a mile away. Went back on Sunday, just for drinks, and what a mess! Outside there were tables full of dirty glasses and plates which weren't cleared during the whole 2 hours we were there. Several dirty glasses at the bar, which were still there when we left, outside bins overflowing and the toilets were scruffy with rubbish and toilet paper strewn across the floor. Such a shame as this gem of a pub used to have a great reputation whereas now it's quite the opposite.

A really nice pub with friendly staff and a lovely garden. Would recommend if all you want are drinks, but we've had two very disappointing meals there including inedible food, Sunday roasts so dry you would choke, cold steak, and missing ingredients/sides. Both times they said it was because the kitchen was busy, but when you've pre-booked a table is that really good enough? Plus we waited an hour for our meals to come out

Had eaten here before and recommended to friends, however friends said I shouldn’t go there its really poor, I couldn’t believe that as we had previously had great meals . We came today and it was poor, waited and hour for meal and it arrived cold and quality was not great, apart from fact loads of items not available in menu

Great food and service, despite being so busy they were turning people away. Loads of room to sit outside, with views of the river.

Called in for a drink and snack on a sunny day. Quiet when we arrived at midday but by 12.30 the car park was full. Nice pint of Aspalls cider and baguettes for a snack. Service was friendly and although we had to wait for food the weather and view made it worthwhile.

For those of us who live in the area the history of the Ferry Boat in recent years has not been a happy one. There was a time, before Greene King got hold of it, when it was well run and doing the basics was a given. Yesterday evening was Monty Python's Cheese Shop sketch come to life in a pub. There are only ever 2 real ales available. Abbott was off when we arrived and the barrel of IPA ran out just after we ordered 2 pints and were seeking a third. A new barrel was put on later, but we have a very strong suspicion that the barrel had only just been delivered to the pub that day. The other drink I wanted to order was a lime and soda, but no lime cordial available. One of our small party turned up a little late, hence I returned to the bar to order another pint and a packet of crisps, but had to wait 5 mins before any member of staff appeared (it was very tempting to serve myself!). As a one-off, hey these things happen. The issue is that this sort of problem has become routine at the Ferry Boat in recent years and it feels as if the annual increase in customers due to summer somehow catches the pub by surprise. The fundamental for a pub is to have a supply of drinks and provide timely service. That's what justifies the prices charged. The Ferry Boat loves to play up it's long history and how it's reputedly England's oldest inn. Yet after arguably 1000 years Greene King still can't get the fundamentals right. The location is in a great setting with a very affluent local population on it's doorstep. Unfortunately most of that population despair about Greene King's management of the Ferry Boat. If Greene King is unable to run the location to it's full potential, which starts with getting the fundamentals right, please allow someone else to do so. There are plenty of pubs around that are well run, are well staffed and provide a level of service that attracts a lot of repeat business. That's what the Ferry Boat used to be like many years ago. Regrettably the dead hand of Greene King is upon it.

Beautiful location, however a lot of the tables outside hadn’t been cleared and ashtrays were full to the brim. Waited at the bar for over 10 minutes and no sight of any staff and when they did turn up they were not happy. We ordered two starters which were not expensive nor were they cheap, but when they arrived it was shocking. If you’re after sitting by the river with a drink then this is a nice spot but the service is awful.

Stayed here for a weekend break, near cambridge, staff are very nice, especially Connor, who was professional, polite, and knowledgeable, the food was good and they are large potions, especially the breakfast. Only criticisms are the fan downstairs in the kitchen can be heard in your room, this noise carries on until 10-10.30 in the evening. Also, in our room, the shower head over the bath was held up there with tape, so I had to try and hold it up to get the water to go onto me instead of just hitting the wall which is why I have only given 4 stars.

very nice place food plentiful breakfast huge room very clean a let down was the shower bracket broken looked tacky also you get a fan hum from kitchen during day stops about 10.30 be warned also running out of ipa and Abbotts on a sat early evening seems a bit stupid really but a big call out for Connor very professional

Lovely location, nice pint of Bira moretti, unfortunately couldn't enjoy food as pre booking required for Saturday lunch. Next time🙂. Update as under new management, enjoyed Saturday lunch prawn linguine X2, pint Moretti & Aspalls Cider , friendly service.

Great little hidden gem! Had a lovely stay

Food was fair but not something to make you want to go back. 1st choice not available, 2nd choice poorly presented and over battered. Chips good but very small portions , peas looked like they had dried out and had no taste. Went with a family party so I didn't make a scene and spoil it for the others. Service poor from the beginning, no atmosphere, staff gave the impression that they were doing you a favour by letting you be there and would have been happier if no one came to the premises.
