The GREAT'EST fish and chips in tiverton !!

Very disappointed. Fish was not cooked the batter was still liquid so far from being cooked. I took it back as luckily lived near enough to do that and instead of cooking new or offering anything just tried refrying the same fish returned with the same chips which had now gone cold. It was the bare minimum of effort to fix the problem, I'm not wanting to ask for much but fresh chips or can of drink or something. Anyway took it home ready to enjoy and the batter was still not cooked! It didn't help that the batter was incredibly thick at at nearly half an inch thick in places (photos of undercooked batter second time round). The person who cooks the fish doesn't understand what to do as both fishes we had where under done and had raw batter all over it. Ontop of this the chips where anaemic. A very poor experience. Extra sad as this used to be a very good chippy sadly not anymore.

Absolutely awful, whoever is frying the fish has no idea how to do it properly. The batter was mushy like a thick dumpling. Shame, we will never go there again what a waste of £30

Perfect batter, beautifully cooked fish and chips and best battered sausage in town. We had a learn fish and chips and large battered sausage, curry sauce and pickled onions and two soft drinks. This cost us £20. Perfect amount for the two of us with generous portions, waiting time about 7 mins.

Order from this place regularly, used to be great but sadly this is no longer the case. Takes ages to get food delivered and the last few times they have missed items off my order. Will not be ordering from them anymore

When ordering from your shop , my daughter who is a teenager ordered our food , drinks and paid , when leaving the shop she picked up our drinks, only to be told " you haven't paid for those love" when she said she did , the lady behind the counter looked back on the till and found out that she had indeed paid , without an apology but a mutter under the staffs breath " yes you did", not only is this embarrassing for her but also the other customers in the shop . Can I suggest if you have these "suspicions" you give each customer a receipt after they have paid !

Terrible fish and batter sausage. Batter was very hard and over cooked and very greasy, hardly any fish which was hard and over cooked. Only good thing was chips.

Had a bad experience. They didn't have bags, so I had to walk when it was quite cold then realised that they forgot my fish, so had to walk back then she gave me fish with chips in a box that was for someone else. By the time I got home the whole thing was cold and I had to dig out of my fish out of chips, which broke up so the fish. Never again!!

Sausage was great but chips were a massive let down. Despite ordering only 20 mins after opening they were luke warm, all soft and stuck together making it very difficult to eat. Also despite asking for salt and Vinegar that was also lacking. Bland! Won't be returning.

Forgot our fish so we had to go back. Given the fish which was covered in chips that made the whole lot soggy. Won’t be returning.

Thought I'd try these as it's been few years since. Wish I hadn't bothered. Batter was chewy on the fish no idea how they managed that. My daughter had cheesy chips, which she couldn't finish and chicken popcorn seems to be missing the vital ingredient chicken!! My second daughter had veggie burger, she rated it 1.5 out of 5. Won't be returning ANY time soon, if ever.

Gone down hill. Chips are stodgy, and a lot are black from bruised potatoes being used. Order has been wrong past couple of times also. Has happened twice now, wont be risking it for a 3rd time. Young staff obviously dont want to be there, in turn running the place into the ground slowly. Used to be great food, shame.

Absolute terrible service from 2 members of staff over the telephone. Made an order through the app which then arrived incorrect. I called them up and was greeted by absolute disgusting attitude, so argumentative and even hung the call on me. I had to ring them back and attitude was even worse. When I mentioned their customer service is appalling I was replied with ‘really’ in a sarcastic way. Never will they have my custom again, the food was also disgusting, just like their attitude! Not even an apology was given!

The best fish and chips in Devon. The large cod is beautiful and perfectly cooked. Clean, succulent white flakes that melt in the mouth. I also love their spicy chicken burgers. I’ve tried all the local fish restaurants and Penguins are by far the best. Great customer service and always delivering with a genuine smile. Well done and I hope you receive awards soon.

Placed an order via foodhub. Given delivery estimate of 45 minutes. After an hour I spoke to foodhub, who said they would call the restaurant and chase the order. Foodhub came back to me and said they were told we would have our order with 5-10 minutes. 15 minutes later still no food so I called directly. Spoke to a rude member of staff who said "our foodhub orders didn't print correctly" and when I asked what happens next they said "get a refund through the app" because "their delivery driver has gone home now" Not once during the phone call did they apologise. They just had an attitude of "what do you want me to do about it?" No idea how foodhub called the restaurant and were told 10 minutes until delivery, yet I called and they never even had our order to begin with. If they didn't have our order details, why was there no attempt to contact us. Why did we only find out they didn't have our order 90 minutes after placing it when we called them ourselves? Awful experience, waste of time. Will never order from here again.

For the second time now the fish was undercooked - wet batter and the cod was certainly not lovely white as it always used to be under previous management. Chips were limp and half cooked. All in all, another ''disaster'', and I regret giving them the benefit of the doubt after the first lot was thrown in the bin. A very disappointed Johnny Ramone.

Food is lovely but I ordered food and it never showed up normally it takes time about 1 hour sometimes 2 too deliver food now I only live about 15 minutes away just terrible and I wouldn’t recommend

AVOID!! I thought I’d had some bad burgers and food until this set a new low, £19 for this delivered. The burger was like chewing a tennis ball (how the hell do you make a burger this bad) the chicken chunks were also chewy 🤦‍♂️. AVOID at all cost as this place is terrible and trust me I eat out all over the country everyday and this place is one of the worst!! Angry I have to give it a one star as it should be minus 10.

Food delivered freezing cold. They forgot to deliver a wrap that was ordered and kids drink. When I phoned them nobody answered the phone. Used to be good but has become really bad.

Family been going to the penguin fish & chips for years. Something awful has happened after new owners took over. The fish is sold as Cod but I can safely say it is not! Probably Pollock or worse. Fish was grey and not white as Cod should be. Tasted awful & the batter had a burned overused oil taste. So disappointing after years of good quality cooking and the use of fresh cod… cutting corners like this has cost them our service & many more after reading latest reviews on their website

I've ordered online for delivery and I received my order very quick, in 15 minutes instead of 45 minutes stated on my order. The portion was huge, even though I ordered regular chips I had plenty of them to be able to eat by myself, fish was fresh and very well cooked. The food tasted great and I would definitely recommend!

Went for my sons birthday and young staff obviously didn’t want to be there. Got back and chips were half cooked and inedible so a very expensive order went in the bin!! Penguin was so good a few years ago. Shame!

2.5 stars, I'm not horrible, after ordering, we waited two hours, only half the food turned up, after calling to discuss, I was called a racist, food is great, customer service appalling! Would not use again, which is a shame as the food quality is very good!

Terrible service.... ordered via app at 6.45pm, and had to call twice to chase food as still waiting over 2 hours for delivery. First time told at 8pm we were the next delivery , 8.42pm now and still no food. Called to chase and got told they are very busy, and would have it by 9pm as they close!!!! Terrible Terrible service, no offer of refund or anything to make us feel valued customers. Order with caution, and ridiculous service

Fish cooked to order, very nice, very hot and plenty of choice

Only 200mtrs from shop, but disabled. Placed order, told 35 mins delivery. After 45 mins was told only only going to be another 15 minutes as only one delivery man on. It arrived eventually after 1 and a half hour, Luke warm but tasted OK. Over £21 for 2 pcs fish and portion of chips. Poor value. Lesson has been learnt.

Ordered twice from here now and both times food has been good when it arrives, but wait times are ludicrous! 1hr first time and 1hr45 mins second time. Such a long wait it would actually put me off ordering from here again.

Ordered Plaice and chips X 2 . All wrapped up together in paper only , not boxed. Very greasy, and the Plaice had all broken up when unwrapped.

Good quality fish and chips, ordered large cod and portion size was enormous. Very fresh and perfectly cooked fish with crispy batter even after the 5 min walk back to the Premier inn! Only let down by poor ketchup brand, would gladly pay more for Heinz.

We stayed overnight in Tiverton and bought fish and chips for the both of us on Wednesday evening. Simply the best we have had for a long time. Normally I dont eat the batter on fish but this was superb and the chips were done to perfection. Friendly guy on taking payment and didnt have to wait long. Well done team.

I have lived in Tivvy for @ 10 years and always saw this fish & chip shop takeaway being popular. So we thought we would give it a go and it was the best fish and chips we have in such a long time. The cod was lovely and meaty and the chips were yummy and nothing was too fatty. The staff were very friendly. Will definitely be going again, highly recommend you wont be disappointed

Good fish and chips, although service was very slow due to the size of the shop and covid restrictions. Can't fault the fix, though £14 for 2 x Cod and Chips is perhaps a little on the pricey side.

Lovely piece of fish but the chips were a real disappointment particularly as they were very busy and you would then expect the chips to be fresh but they tasted as though they had been sitting around for some time.

We use this chippy regularly and have always enjoyed the cod and chips. good portions and quality, so far the best we've had since moving to Devon.

When we first moved here at Easter we thought ‘let’s have some fish n chips’ it was lovely. When we went back again ,got the order went home, very disappointed. The chips were cold so was the fish and it was really greasy.Needless to say we won’t be going back

My husband picked up fish and chips for himself and savaloy and chips for me. After a long journey travelling back to Devon I was looking forward to not having to cook. The previous reviews were so good I thought this would be our best choice. Oh! Boy was I wrong. My chips were hard and under cooked so most of them got thrown away and the savaloy was o.k. until I got half way through it. It started to taste very strange, then I realized what I was tasting - it was soap/hand cleaner. It's nice to know that they have a clean establishment but this was going a bit too far. Sorry but on this occasion you haven't convinced this customer to come back soon.

Not a UK resident any more I decided to show my Thai son fish and chips, this was rated as the best not only here but by Tivvy residents so we tried it. Nothing to fault on the food and the service & happy to see recyclable & biodegradable packaging in use throughout.

Penguin fish bar is a take away only fish and chip shop, and in my opinion it's the best in tiverton, if it's a nice day you can sit on the benches across the road by the river. They also do a kid's meal which includes a drink and a toy.

Love this chippy, we go here, then take it to sit by the canal opposite. Best chippy in the area by far. The fish is really flaky and the chips are perfect, proper chippy style. Lovely, friendly and polite staff. The food area is nice and clean and well kept. A+++
