Nice cafe with really good cheese scones. Good homemade soup and friendly staff. We sat indoors this time as weather was a little chilly. Good for vegetarian food. Has a farm shop with very good selection of vegetables and some unusual fruits.

Not as good as it used to be. Not been for a while but could always rely on a nice homemade bowl of soup and bread. Very disappointed on this visit. Not able to eat the soup it was water with oil on top and what looked like veg to be thrown out floating. Sad as it did used to be really nice. The bread was tasteless but like bread from some wholesaler wrapped in plastic with a use by date of at least a month. Nice enough people working in it. Prices would lead you to expect really good food but sadly this was not the case at all. Before 12 the vegetable lasagne was already sitting in the hot food holder getting drier by the minute

They need to employ someone that knows how to prepare food, because it really lets down the farm shop and unique setting. Soggy overpriced sandwich with no filling, served with dry, cold roast potatoes (?!) and bland cous cous. Very odd and not worth the money. Maybe it was a one off. The cakes looked nice - wish I’d gone for that Ill be back and look forward to replacing this with a 5 star

I hadn't been to Pillars for a couple of years, but had previously been a regular customer who very much enjoyed lunching there. Sadly there have been several changes: no table service, resulting in standing in a queue to order, then wait for a tray to take to a table. The area was very cramped with a lot of people waiting to order, then waiting to collect their food. Plus there's a door in that area, resulting in even more people trying to negotiate the space. The food itself was very disappointing: I ordered the vegan burger (almost 10 quid) but didn't eat it after trying a mouthful as it was very dry and tasteless on a dry (stale?) bun. The wee side salad was pleasant though. As I was still hungry I ordered ginger cake as it was one of the very few sweet vegan options. The cake was probably lovely when it was fresh, but it was also dry. The coffee was nice, and the barista was charming. The staff were all lovely, TBF. With no table service the cleaning of the tables has unfortunately been neglected also. The shop's produce was smashing, especially the fruit/veg. Very expensive, but that's always been the case, but is forgivable due to the great range. I was excited to introduce a friend to Pillars, but from now on I'll be sticking to Vegan 269 in Dunfermline for lunching with pals. I'm genuinely sad to be writing such a negative review, but it's in the spirit of constructive criticism with the hope that this and similar reviews will spur management on to get Pillars back up to it's previous high standard of food and service (waiting staff).

Great spot off the beaten track for lunch and coffee. Be warned though it is expensive, and the food can be hit or miss. Depending on the day. If you have deep pockets, and care about the environment and organic food. Then this is your place.

We really enjoyed our stay here, gorgeous set up with a lovely shop and cafe serving some of the nicest cake I have ever eaten. Lots to do in the area. We'd been to a dog friendly distillery nearby which is why we were in the area. Grass pitch for motorhome had a nice view over the hils, clean toilet and hot water for showers. Very quiet overnight, there was some road noise in the evening but nothing in the small hours. Quaint little gem of a place, would definitely stay again if in the area.

I stayed here last month for a camping trip, we booked in for a one night non electric tent pitch as something was to do on the Bank holiday weekend! The campsite and facilities are pretty basic, the campsite itself is a field which is 500metres + away from the toilet facilities. The toilets themselves are as you would imagine, spider infested, cold, outdoorsy. Which is fine as we are camping! ⛺ The site brands itself as an organic farm and has that Scout camp aesthetic going on. A wooden building farm shop cafe, vegetarian cafe and space for strawberries being grown. The cafe was a major disappointment for us, the breakfast menu has 1 item and that is a roll and egg. So I guess that I am going to order .....em....Emm........the roll and egg! It would have been nice to see a more expanded menu for breakfast food. The cafe itself was not so clean, as one of the first customers in the morning, I would have expected tables to be thoroughly clean from the previous day. Tables still had jam stuck to it and sticky marks from previous days visitors. Varnishing the wooden furniture not only would lengthen the lifespan of the material, but it would increase the hygiene of the spave as the surface would become more washable..... The whole place needs a bit of TLC and an expanded menu. I get the feeling that the owners of this premises have remained the same for many years and become somewhat complacent in terms of decor. I recommend looking at the Findhorn Foundation in Forres, for how they engage with the public and have a fully functional cafe, without compromising personal beliefs.

Dont like the new layout, queuing for takeaway is cramped and situated inbetween the seating and access to the kitchen so the poor waiting staff were constantly having to squeeze through the queue of people laden with plates, felt really sorry for them. All staff were nice but seemed really harrassed, hot chocolate wasnt nice. Dont like to be negative but been a customer over 20 years and always liked it but it's sadly no longer as good

We have been to this cafe a few times previously. It has always been very expensive but I have never worried about high costs when food is good quality. Unfortunately the high costs remain but the quality has gone. The food was poor, poor, poor! Tasteless is the best description for it! It looks good on the plate but the food had no flavour - any of it. I will come back to the shop, but the cafe - never again!

This place used to do the BEST cheese and pickle toasties with their own salad, and a fantastic oil dressing, really amazing homemade soups. Now they serve packaged sandwiches in plastic, and you can pay about £4 for soup but it's really vile, gets handed to you in a paper cup, and a tiny bit of bread. The shop itself is still good. But the cafe itself has gone really downhill.

First time I’ve been here for a few years and it’s not what it used to be. I appreciate that the hospitality industry has to adapt to survive over the past few years but most of what was wonderful about this place has been lost. Very long wait to be served by surly staff even though it wasn’t particularly busy. Also disappointing to have no kids menu anymore and the food there is not particularly kid friendly.

I live nearby and have been to Pillars quite a lot. I love the whole aesthetic, ethos and vibe of the place. Cute little spot, good shop and it’s great that they grow food on site. Therefore, it pains me to say that the food just isn’t up to par. I have had a number of lunches at the cafe and I have been disappointed each time. The food is always extremely under seasoned and lacking flavour, the focaccia in the sandwiches always seems dry/stale. It does make me wonder if the chef is tasting what gets sent out… Other people I have lunched with there have agreed. I hope this is taken in the spirit in which it’s meant (as useful feedback) and not as needless criticism/whinging. I hope to see Pillars improve and still be here in years to come.

We have passed here many times and keep saying, we'll need to stop sometime and try it out. It was quite busy and the two girls serving did not seem to be aware of people waiting and had no sense of urgency to work through the orders any quicker, in fact I overhead the girl taking the orders asking the other that was making drinks if she wanted her to slow down ! Bizarre. Anyway, after almost walking out we finally placed an order, we managed to get the last bowl of soup (we wanted 3) so opted for that and some other alternatives. The egg foccacia while nicely presented in grease paper and tied with twine was tasteless. Soup was good but the hot chocolate tasted like it had cardboard pulped into it, we were expecting better, particularly after waiting on the girl stirring it about 50 times (do you not notice the queue ) Tables were grotty from previous customers and the policy of return your tray to a central point wasn't possible as it was already full of used trays. Sorry, perhaps we got this on a bad day but food and drink was bland and that includes the organic lemonade we had. We'll just continue by on our journey in future.

I still find this to be a place with a nice ambience! My last review for Pillars was 2018. Since then they have increased the size of the indoor seating area and put in a wood burner.....lovely and warm yesterday! There is still only a small selection of choice in their food both hot and cold, though I appreciate it must be a fine balance trying to avoid waste at the end of the day and yet having sufficient to provide for an excess of visitors on any day. The pizzas we usually have are still nice but seem to have less cheese each time. My husband has always enjoyed the scones though I don't understand why they are so crumbly and difficult to cut. The other cakes we have had recently have all been ok. The pastys still seem to have too much pastry, but the coffees are always great! Overall you can feel where they may be trying to cut costs which is to be expected today but if it starts to really affect the taste, and we pay more for it, then perhaps we won't visit as often. As to the shop.....the fruit and veg are still the same.....mostly overseas produce so if you think you might stock up its VERY expensive now as well. We did grab the few items grown in Scotland. The inner shop is still more expensive than a Health Food store and vastly more expensive than a supermarket for the same items. So now we pop in for some breakfast, go for a walk and back to pick up half a dozen items from the shop......in 2018 I would have loaded up a trolley.....Happy Days!!!

Over familiar cafe staff whose approach to customer service is at best brusque and at worst down right rude. As a customer, I am not your "mate" and I don't expect that relaxed approach in what was in the past a polite and courteous service experience. No hot food available as the 30 mins between breakfast ending at 1100 and lunch beginning at 1130 are hard and fast rules. So don't try and order lunch at 1120 as they "couldn't possibly hold the order" until 1130. We won't be back. There's plenty of other amazing places to eat nearby. Very disappointing experience. Won't be back!

Even when I sung the praises of Pillars (se previous review), I have never been a fan of its organisation. The setting is idyllic but the experience deteriorates every visit. This time I dropped in for breakfast with my wife and daughter. I was hesitant to order the sausage in a roll and my worst fears were confirmed. A dry, crumbly roll with a dry vegan sausage in it. Even though the sausage was a reputable brand, I found the offering inedible. We had asked our daughter's to be served on toast, "no problem" said the cashier - but it was served in a roll. We loved sitting outside and our freshly made juices were nice but the flat white was poor. In total £40 for three sausage rolls we did not like, three fruit drinks and a coffee. The bin area was buzzing with wasps. Normally we would go into the shop but felt the value was so poor at the cafe we did not want to spend more money here, so we walked into Falkland instead. This place could be great but it never seems to quite get it together.

Come on Pillars you can do better than this. For many years I have loved Pillars for the cafe and the food. The last few times in the cafe it has been pretty awful. The staff are not listening. Friends are saying the same thing. On my last two visits they got simple orders wrong. The offering also isn’t great. It’s become more of a takeaway. Everything in take away ( albeit recyclable ) packaging. All you can get for breakfast is a vegan sausage or egg in a roll. Today at 10-10 no more eggs. Really ! You sell eggs. My friend got the vegan sausage in a roll. The sausage was okay but the roll was almost inedible. Stop relying on your previous good reputation or you won’t keep it.

Over the years it’s been a joy to stop here for a coffee and something to eat. The rustic, original design and layout sets it apart. But whether because of lockdown or some other reason I wonder if standards are slipping. The soup, previously delicious, is now nothing to write home about. And the sandwiches and bakes aren’t any better than elsewhere. All the while prices seem to be creeping up. Today I paid £3.50 for a “large” cappuccino which was really just a standard or medium size. Too pricey? Yes, I’d say so. I’m not going to stop coming here-it’s a great location- but I do hope the management will take on board these criticisms in the helpful spirit in which they are given.

They were totally unconcerned when I pointed out how bad it was. At the moment serving a very very limited menu which is Over priced and not great. Other places much much better. The final straw was last week when I ordered a cup of tea and a cake. My friend just wanted a hot water. Now how much do you think a hot water in a throwaway cup would be? £2. I asked for this to be double checked. Yep £2 for a cup of hot water and again grumpy staff when you ask about it. I photographed the receipt but it will only let me add 1 photo to this review.

We visited the pillars of hercules back in the Summer. Enjoyed the outdoor seating area and cold drinks. Felt like we had been transported to another country and were having our lunch in an exotic jungle. (This is the redeeming feature that made me give it 2 stars rather than one). The setting is very pretty on a nice day.The food wasn't anything special and was fairly expensive for what it was. Decided to make a trip back along with the dogs on a cold december day. We had read the opening and closing times due to it being during the festive period. We were there at 3.30pm (website stated that from 4.30pm there would be a limited menu). Left husband outside on frosty seats with the dogs while I went in to order. I placed my order (or tried to) and a fairly plesant lady informed me that they only had soup and sandwiches left. Just as I was about to make my new decision another lady stormed out the kitchen and said "kitchens closed. You can order hot drinks and cakes only". Not a word of apology or a faux smile to be seen. Gosh i'm sorry I wanted to give you my money for your food and service. I felt like I really shouldn't have been there. Honestly if customer service isn't your thing stay in the kitchen. Service is slow - prices are high. I guess a lot of people opt for it because they support the vegan lifestyle more than anything else. This place simply wouldn't survive if it was competing with a non vegan farm shop cafe. We ended up going back over to Perth and eating elsewhere.

Revisited the Pillars after some time. Has become very ' gentrified' and overpriced. No longer a spot to pop in for a quick cake and coffee. Quality of confectionery still good, but way overpriced, soft drinks extortionate.

Very friendly and good service on what was a busy lunchtime. Only had coffee and cake but people around us were certainly enjoying their food. Worth a visit.

The Pillars of Hercules has a warm country ambiance. Food and service were excellent. The adjacent farm shop offers a plethora of high quality groceries and organic produce. A most enjoyable experience.

We chanced upon this en route to Falklands Palace so called in for coffee. Wow what a great shop of food and ingredients especially for those who might have various food intolerances or allergies. Vegans were well catered for too.

Came for a coffee and a cake after a walk around the woods. Coffee was very nice. Had a very indulgent chocolate bomb which was tasty. Dad had a piece of pumpkin flapjack. All cakes are served in large slices and having been here a few times before can say each time the cakes have been really really tasty.

Visiting Falkland was main part of me and the D's revisiting-the-past trip up north. D was meeting up with two high-school friends. Our host recommended meeting at Pilaars and I'm so glad we did! He visits regularly. The five of use ate a hearty early lunch before our long walk through the local countryside and sitting down when back for a coffee before farewells. Between the five of us, we dined on bean burgers, vegetable curries and quiches. All perfectly cooked. D particularly enjoyed her curry. I want to visit again to try the garlic mushrooms and sweet potato fries!

Had nice lunch, garlic mushrooms on toast(could be a bit more garlic on them) and sweet potato wedges with garlic mayo. Garlic mayo is great and helps the mushroom on toast, maybe something could be served with the mushrooms on toast? All the food seems good and I have been a lot of times. We love the walk in the woods to Falkland and back to The Pillars of Hercules for lunch, I only go with family or friends as you can sit outside with your dog but have to order inside so this is a problem if you go on your own. In all fairness I have not asked the question if a staff member would take your order from outside for you or if you can take your dog in to order. Great place, love it and so does family and friends well worth a visit.

Lovely Organic Centre with fabulous Food to eat in - fantastic Organic Shop and seats inside and outside. Lots of Gardens/Orchards for kids to play around - and small kids play area. Lovely Toilets with Shower facilities and great Staff. A little pricier than the average cafe - but well worth the little extra. Could seem like a Hippy Retreat at times.

Found this place completely by accident, and there is no doubt we will be back, not only for the superb food, but also for the shop which sells all manner of organic produce. I had the curry, which is usually served with rice, but not here. There was a choice of quinoa or home baked flat bread. I had the flat bread and what a nice change it was. Also excellent for mopping out the bowl when it gets near the end, and the curry was so good ... it had to be mopped out ! My lady had the bean burger, which was also delicious and all washed down with a glass of fresh apple juice. Altogether, a superb experience. Seating is either indoors or when it's warm, outdoors and a lot of the outdoor seating is also under cover if it should rain. I was onlyb there this afternoon, and I am already looking forward to the next visit.

We just stumbled upon this cafe exiting Falkland and we’re incredibly glad we did. On a slightly damp day, we weren’t quite ready for lunch but were immediately tempted by the possibility of some really good nutritious food. We were so not disappointed.

The Pillars of Hercules is very appealing for a variety of reasons. It is just a mile or so walk through a beautiful woods to Falkland, the food is organic and great AND there is a bothy that you can rent and stay in. It is very rustic - to get hot water, you must have the wood-burning stove going for a while, then turn on the pump and you can have a nice, hot shower. It is very private, has a small little yard. It is the best.

Beautiful, quiet campsite. The kids were safe to run around in the Orchard Field. Coffee from the cafe was lovely. Food is expensive but it's all organic and fresh. I was surprised that there was only one shower in the Ladies. We had a lovely time and would go back for 2 to 3 nights.

Vegetarian cafe with organic farm shop. Busy cafe, has camping available as well. Really went to find Scottish soft fruit esp raspberries and strawberries but unfortunately they had no stock. Lots of veg. from other parts of the world and a bit home grown. So a bit dissapointing in all.

We've been a few times now as a family and with friends. We really enjoy fresh vegetarian food and wanted so badly to like this place. Unfortunately staff in the cafe are pretty passive at best. The food isn't especially exciting, salads are often overly sweet, sandwiches frequently dry and everything is overpriced. There aren't really many other options about so it seems that the lack of competition has made them complacent. They could and should certainly do far better especially for the prices that they are charging. Disappointing. Such a shame.

Popped in here for lunch after visit to Falkland Palace and wow! Was so refreshing to have a choice of vegetarian food. The Beanburger was delicious, even the side salad and coleslaw was fantastic. Cakes were to die for, great coffee & fruit juices. My 11 yr old ate her whole pizza and the salad & coleslaw- high praise indeed. Staff were so friendly & lovely. It was sooo busy as obviously everyone else already knows how great this place is, but it didn’t affect the service at all. Loved having a walk round the farm shop & herb garden after lunch too. Will definitely be back.

I was intending to climb Falkland Hill or East Lomond hill, but was rained off. Looking for a coffee to put off a little time I found this little gem by accident. Turn off the main road when you see the large wooden sign and then immediately right and it is about 100 yards along on the right. The restaurant/shop has quite a few parking places to either side of it but with plenty more nearby. The restaurant has a lovely warm atmosphere and friendly staff. Although I did not have anything to eat on this occasion, I will definitely return to try it out. The food that I saw being delivered to other tables looked very good and being an ex veggie the menu was very tempting. There is a choice of indoor or al fresco dining.

My wife and I visited the café for lunch before touring Falkland Palace, on a cloudy but dry day in May. The café is sited behind the farm shop, which was thoroughly stocked with organic produce, including beers and wines, and which we enjoyed exploring. Several mums were pushing very full trolleys containing (apparently) a weekly shop.

Had a walk through a wooded area in Falkland, decided to eat at the Pillars of Hercules. This is a vegetarian restaurant, we had soup and sandwiches. Minestrone soup , hummus and roasted vegetables sandwich. Both were delicious, soup nice and hot. Bread tasted homemade, nice and fresh. One of our group had garlic mushrooms which she said were delicious. We then had a pot of tea and berry and crumble cake, very nice, a little cream with the cake would have been as it was a little dry but overall very nice. Staff friendly and welcoming.

Previously it had more of a pub feel which the large bar still holds on to. Table tops are a bit more utilitarian but the menu suggests high designs which it doesn’t quite deliver. Large portion of tasty starters but over priced and slightly over cooked steak with fish and chips where the batter on one side was over and the other side slightly under.

Went for lunch but the place was closed. No sign at the end of the road to say so. It looks as if it could be closed for quite a while yet. Very disappointing. Signs to say closed and for how long at the end of the road would be helpful.

Friday night dinner of chicken and haggis was lovely, nachos and pakora were over cooked, went for drinks on Sunday afternoon to be told no beer and no cola, seems such a disappointment as caravan park is still open for 2 weeks, no wonder there was no one in
