I visited here as a Japanese tourist. I heard this food is so nice. First, I was overwhelmed by the good selection of local Dalston beers. Eventhough, with this sublime Victorian interior!!! I didn't know what should to order, so I started with the recommended machintosh ales, maybe pale ale. For the second drink, I ordered one that many regular customers were ordering, but it was sold out. And they recommended a similar one, It was also very very nice. I wasn't hungry at that time, so the only dish I ordered was mussels escabeche, but it was also nice mariage with the beers. It was one of my best London pub experiences.

For nearly £30 (incl £3.95 service charge) I received 1/2 carrot, 4 small chunks of roast potato, a cupcake sized Yorkshire pudding, possibly a spoonful of mash, a few shreds of boiled cabbage - not braised as the menu stated, and a slice of lamb meat. It was very nice, but would it really hurt to be less stingy with the portion size?

What an incredible pub, hospitality is a different level. Food is so well refined but also just the right note of filth that you want in the best gastropub in London. But it’s so much more than your typical gastropub. Crisp pheasant legs, salt cod croquettes and guindillas, steak tartare on beef dripping toast, all stole the show along with pork chop and boudin noir plus the best triple cooked chips in London. Joe is doing really great things in the kitchen and Ross is an excellent host. Easily my best meal of the year.

Had high hopes for a well reviewed Sunday roast but left disappointed and hungry. Pork belly was cold leaving it with unpleasant hardened fat throughout. The rest of the tiny plate lacked seasoning and the flavourless gravy didn't add anything. Service was friendly but sadly slow taking 40 mins to order, no check for second drink or if the food was okay.

This is a lovely pub. The choice of ales/beer etc was great. The service was perfect, smooth and attentive. The Sunday roast was well cooked. My only complaint was that I left feeling hungry. Sunday roast is traditionally a big meal, at £24 for the roast beef I really do not think I should leave thinking about what can I eat tonight, but I did. Apart from l that it was a very enjoyable afternoon.

A real shame, the quality of food for a Sunday roast is high, but the portion size for what you are paying is abismal. We had a party of 8 and all of us had to go elsewhere for food afterwards. Ridiculously small amount of food for a 24 quid roast..

Lovely little pub that has not been messed about with but serves some great food and good beers and wines. We shared the carpaccio of venison to start, with a lovely dressing, then I had Red Mullet with crab sauce, fennel and pomme purée which was excellent, my partner had Bavette steak which was lovely and tender and seasoned really well, drank a great bottle of Txaroli, service was great, look forward to returning when we are in the area.

A cosy Victorian pub with beautiful decorations and furniture. It’s a great spot to have a quiet chat in a relaxing atmosphere with great service tucked away from the busier areas of Hackney. I’ve had their triple cooked chips multiple times which always deliver. The rest of the menu looks great but I haven’t tried yet. The pub is quite small which contributes to its charm, however I’ve found on busier evenings it’s harder to get a table during food service so book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Recently had the worst experience I have had in YEARS at this pub. The waitress seemed to dislike us from the off, not sure if she was having a bad day, but she was cold and rude to us from the start before we had really had a chance to interact at all, just very abrupt when taking our order. We ordered a duck roast which was the only option left on the menu (£31 each), which when it arrived was undercooked and the portions very small. We asked for extra gravy and got told that it is 'very expensive gravy' so we would have to pay extra, which we accepted. When we politely fed back our dissatisfaction with the food quality and portion size to the waitress she responded with rolled eyes, frustration and then condescended us further by explaining that the cut of meat was also 'very expensive' so perhaps we did not understand. We had paid £31 each so obviously understood we were supposed to receive a quality and well cooked meal, which we did not. They offered us a side dish as a way of compensation and when offered our choice she highlighted again, for a third time, that the dish was 'very expensive', so that we better be prepared for the size. It was late in the day and the kitchen was clearly running out of ingredients, so the disappointment with the food was not the main point of contention, if they had handled it in a polite and apologetic manner I would 100% not be writing this review. However the attitude we were given was so beyond the pale my friend and I were pretty taken aback. My friend and I decided to write to the pub to feedback our experience. The response we got from management was just as appalling. They offered to refund us, but they chose to highlight that, the report of the interaction from their staff member in question differed from ours (surprise surprise), and that they do not believe that 'events align', which completely invalidates our experience as customers, and almost seems like they are accusing us of lieing. The management also stated in their message that they had reviewed the CCTV which 'cannot conclusively say that events align'. I am unsure why CCTV would be a useful medium with which to confirm a verbal conversation?! Totally disgusted by my experience here, and how it was handled. It is very out of character for me to take the trouble to leave a review but this whole interaction appalled me and showed me that they have absolutely no respect for their customers so I would think twice about making that booking.

Firstly the positives: the service was very charming and the location is lovely. However, the roast I had was one of the worst Sunday dinners I’ve ever had, especially given the cost of the roast beef (£24). The gravy/oil was certainly the worst gravy I’ve ever had in London. Shame as the reviews seem generally positive… perhaps they just don’t do a good roast. If do you go on a Sunday take some Bistro with you and thank me later.

A very overpriced, average roast dinner. We saw a recommendation that this pub had one of the best roasts in East London but we’re pretty disappointed. One of the highlights from the review was the cauliflower cheese, however it was no longer part of the menu even though they still had it online. I then ordered the chicken but was told it would be over a one hour wait so had to choose something else. £24 was pretty steep for 2 pieces of meat, 3 potatoes and a bit of veg. It also came without gravy so had to order some. Overall wouldn’t recommend. Highlight was how lovely the staff were.

The pub is beautiful on the outside and in. Lovely atmosphere and great beers on tap. Everything set up for a perfect Sunday roast. Unfortunately the roast itself was a big let down. The meat was nice, and the roast potatoes were crispy, but that's where it ends. You pay £24 for a roast, and it came on what can only be described as a side plate (have seen other reviews say the same). We had finished it in 5 mins. The gravy was so watery and had 0 flavour, and you had to pay £1.50 for extra gravy water. The cauliflower cheese didn't have any cheese. I had to make dinner as soon as I got home as we were still so hungry. I get the impression the chef is very very capable and the menu not on a Sunday looked delicious and I can imagine tastes great, but I really wouldn't recommend the roast for that price. If you make the portions bigger and make some thick rich gravy, you'll be on to a winner.

Went down to the soft launch of the new menu under chef Joe and his team. The food was sensational, executed perfectly and great value. Those sobrasada croquettes might be the best I've had in London and the whole John Dory swimming in samphire and butter has been in my dreams all week (no picture of that as we scoffed the whole thing immediately). The staff are so warm and helpful, proper old school hospitality that's all too rare these days. The whole vibe is great so will be my regular go to - so glad to have a local independent pub that does it all. Popped by on Sunday and saw a lobster roast that looked out of this world too. Amended - 25/07/23! Came back for a meal on the house - much appreciated! The roasts were no longer on a small plates system which we found so much better. Food was delicious - went for the smoked chicken this time round and it was great. Left feeling full and happy. We also ordered the peach crumble which was delicious and a really decent portion size. Service was really good and they even threw in another dessert on the house that we hadn't ordered. Definitely a much better experience this time round and glad to see the small plates system is no more! Original review: Came for a Sunday roast and booked a table for 8 people. We were aware that their roasts menu had changed to a 'small plates' system for the summer, which we weren't too happy about, but we were intrigued to see how this could possibly work. When we arrived we ordered and were told that the carrots (priced at £12) were a sharing portion, so we ordered 1x plate of carrots as well as 2x plates of potatoes and 1x plate of broccoli between four people, and our own meats each. However when the plates started to arrive, we received one carrot cut in half... We were then later told that the kitchen was running low on carrots, but we felt that this really should have been communicated to us before ordering. Having said that, the roast beef was really tasty, I would definitely recommend ordering it. The dessert was a peach crumble (£9) which sounded delicious, however I didn't order it as I feared it would be absolutely tiny.. There weren't really very many options on the menu in general, and it just felt like a lot of money, for not very much food. The staff were nice and removed the carrots from the bill, and they had given us some delicious pork crackling while we waited for our food. But considering the potatoes and yorkshire puddings were burnt to a crisp, on top of the carrot disappointment, we all just left feeling really dissatisfied with the visit. The small plates system does not work, and the food was extremely overpriced for what you get. I'm not sure I would consider going back to eat there.

**UPDATE 25/07/23** The team were really kind to invite us back for a meal after our initial experience so I wanted to amend the review - it was a really wonderful time. The food was great and the full roast option (back on the menu, hooray!) left us more than satisfied - the smoked chicken and beef were incredible and I would honestly recommend. Service was friendly and brilliant as it was the first time. I will definitely be back in future. Thank you so much! Original review: Hi, I don't usually leave reviews *but* I wanted to share my recent experience and provide some feedback about the pricing and portioning of menu items following my visit earlier today. Firstly, I want to say that the roast beef was absolutely delicious, and staff provided excellent service. However, there was one thing that bothered me, and I believe it's worth bringing up in this review. I was quite surprised to see that after ordering what believed was a sharing plate of carrots to accompany our roast, that we were charged £12 for a single carrot. I understand the importance of using high-quality ingredients, but I felt that this price was excessive for just one vegetable. We were later told that it was due to low stock of carrots - but I think this should have been communicated before ordering. Moreover, I'd like to discuss the recent change to a small plate system instead of the traditional Sunday roast format. I have to be honest; I wasn't thrilled with it. Part of the appeal of a Sunday roast is the hearty, generous portions that leave you feeling satisfied. The smaller plates didn't quite capture that essence for me. I believe going back to serving full plates would greatly enhance the dining experience and provide better value for customers. I'd really like to thank the staff member who listened to our concerns and took the carrots off the bill, but a bit disappointed that we experienced that after looking forward to it for so long.

Typisch englischer Pub. Toller Flair und sehr gutes Essen. Zu guten Preisen! Wir würden wieder kommen. Bier ist sehr teuer, aber das ist es leider fast überall hier.

Nice serving staff, decent beer - but food overpriced and not good. No vegetarian option, just leeks or a piece of cauliflower listed as a main - and the twelve quid piece of cauliflower was not "smoked" but burned, and so were the chips. They did explain that their kitchen was understaffed (temporarily?) but not sure that's sufficient excuse.

Fantastic food! Very adventurous menu, but still safe enough for a romantic dinner for two. Phenomenal smoked custard on the crumble.

Nice cosy pub, only had a few snack bits off the menu but I would say the food was above average.

Always nice local one, in recent years it seems lots of changes of management and kitchen etc, which makes it a bit unpredictable

Quiet Xmas day drinks in this rather excellent pub. Friendly professional couple running it. Straight out of a time machine this fine day. Probably dressed for the occasion. Interesting history. Slightly reminiscent of Amsterdam brown bars. Will return.

We went here for a Sunday roast, after got a suggestion from a friend, regarding the smokiness of their meals, and weren’t wrong! Best sunday roast chicken I even had! Also very nice house lagger! Suggestion to stuff: maybe get a bigger plate for roast. It’s very packed on small plates. Also steak knives would be good too. You can’t cut much with the blunt butter knife.

Best pub food around. Head chef Vivienne is a genius. Don't mind out on the Sunday roast pork and the insanely good and very unusual pear and apple crumble with smokey charcoal custard 🤤

Live south but love the back street pubs you find in east London. Think this is my favorite: all original inside, adventurous food menu and independent so great range of beers.

I been tonight there after few months without going and I have to say I used to love the food they had with hot4u but unfortunately they have changed the kitchen provider And the food tonight was 3 out of 10 ( and I think I been generous with that 3). I ordered a tomato salad that was very poor served with a old looking lettuce followed by a triple fried fries that were very soft and full of oil (not crunchy at all). We ordered some roasted beetroot that it was hard and a steak beef that it was cooked in in a low temperature so the beef ended up boiling instead of been sealed and medium rare in the inside. We ordered some oysters and broccoli that we cancelled due to the poor develop skills of the food. Not what I imagine it at all. I have to add that service was very kind, understanding and good with us and applied to us a 25% discount. Hopefully they can improve the kitchen situation and bring back the quality that they used to have.

This is a pub where young people run the show and try things. I love how they run it. The food is ace, experimental and delicious. We most of the time just drink, but that's easy given the nice beer selection.

Exceptionally bad fish and chips. The batter was soggy and swimming in grease. The chips were tasteless and soggy. This place used to be excellent a few years ago but sadly is now the worst fish & chips I’ve had for a long time. I couldn’t finish the meal as it was that bad. At over £12 for a small cod and chips it’s a total rip off as well. Never again.
