Railway Carriage Cafe in South Somerset

We were a big group visiting a friend who lives near here, so after she shared some options, we all chose this place. Location wise, it’s easy to find just off the road and has a good sized car park. As a big group, we’d booked ahead and even though it was sunny, most of the tables are undercover. There’s a small play area too which the 18 month year old with us loved. Also great that they’re dog friendly. We ended up ordering at least one of every dish (see photo of the menu). Service was really good, food was delicious. Definitely recommended.

We came in at the end of the summer and had to wait an extremely long time for food and to be served in the first place. Extremely expensive children’s portions and very difficult to get allergen information eg soy/nut allergy. Each menu item has a lot of elements to it and is very faffy. It has lovely views though.

Absolutely amazing experience, I love the quirky setting, it really adds to the experience! We got seated upstairs in the Bus. Some of the freshest food I’ve ever had from a restaurant, all of it just tasted so good absolutely no faults whatsoever from either of us, will definitely be visiting again and really recommend to anyone thinking of going, a must visit!

Have been meaning to go to Pips for breakfast for years - finally made it this weekend - and I'll certainly not be waiting years again!!! Food was absolutely delicious - to the astonishment of my friend I actually finished it!!! Service as ever was excellent. Would highly recommend

Wow! what a fantastic experience this was. My wife and I, and her brother and his wife went here for lunch recently. The novelty of sitting in a compartment for 4-6 people; in an old railway carriage; being served from a window is superb and ingenious . The food is excellent, well presented and super tasty. They suggest three choices but we struggled, as the servings are very generous. This is not a complaint, just a warning to others. The ambience is wonderful and the service from Kai was perfect. We booked a railway carriage, and were quickly seated on arrival. The carriage was perfect, our own private space. The service by the young lads and girls was brilliant, polite, professional and took time to check all was ok on at least two occasions. We were with family who live local but we were visiting. We had been here before but have never had breakfast which I have to say was superb and worth every penny. People will always moan, if you don’t like it then go back to your cheap coffee and cake shop because these great people don’t need your customer. People let me tell you this place is superb and worth booking to get your private space. Thank you Team

Had been meaning to visit for a while finally got round to it today. Service was S. L. O. W. We waited to be seated, waited even longer to be served, (were actually contemplating walking out when it eventually arrived), and waited again to pay. We were seated in the bottom of the bus. Quite a big step to get in, which was a struggle for me. There was a group of people already there, and they were very loud. We were treated to descriptions of broken bones and oozing wounds - in such a small space it was a bit much. Coffee arrived. Cakes were lovely. Coffee so so. Flat white was way too milky. When we eventually got someone to take payment I was shocked at the prices. Cake had prices displayed but no coffee prices up. £21 for 2 coffees and 2 cakes. We regularly take coffee and cake in several places locally and rarely pay more than £14. This place was definitely not worth 50% more than we usually pay, and we will not be returning.

Great find, not sure why we’ve never been here before. Food was exceptional, we had four dishes to share which was plenty between two for a lunchtime! The potatoes with the pumpkin purée was simply amazing, but it was all so good. Great to find such good food, possibly the best we’ve had for a long time, worth every penny ! The seating areas are quirky, and great staff, super helpful regarding allergies. Also had takeaway cakes which were super yummy.

Visited for breakfast. Beautiful, tasty food. I had avo on toast with an extra egg. Partner had full English and it was lovely. Service was great. Amazing!

We have visited here several times and although the food was lovely as always, this was a much lesser visit. The person taking our order lacked warmth, service was slow (25 minutes wait for coffee and cake) and the gardens have been let go abit. It’s fairly pricey and we have always been happy to pay this previously for the food and experience however we felt the service we received was disappointing on this occasion. I did check on trip advisor to see if this was a one off as reluctant to post a negative review, however it looks as though others have had a similar experience.

Outstanding. A place full of delightful surprises. The railway carriage, the informed caring staff, and most of all the scrumptious flavour packed food. Go visit.

Excellent lunch off the plates menu. Been here before but first visit for lunch and really very pleased. Quality of food was excellent as was the service. Really can’t fault anything about the restaurant, food or service - really pleased and will visit again, only criticism is the toilets which really need an update.

I can’t fault the quality of the food and the concept it lovely with the bud and the train. However the service we received today was terrible. It took 45 minutes to even get a drink. The staff don’t acknowledge you at all. It is expensive for the portion size so you expect the service to be excellent it was very very poor!!! I personally will not be returning and feel sad that it was poor as it was expensive. The man made some excuses but to be honest it was all to late!

We were recommended this cafe while on holiday in the area and it was totally worth the visit. The lunchtime sharing plates were delicious - such good use of simple ingredients, the salads and crispy potatoes were fantastic. My wife and I called in for Breakfast today, it was certainly one of if not the best Breakfast we have ever had. We asked if the bacon could be crispy, not a problem said the friendly lady, it was perfect as was the whole meal, egg, sausage, mushroom, tomato, toast and home made baked beans !
