Great chippy, a little waiting time as all orders are cooked fresh… well worth the wait… delicious

The best fish n chips I have had for a very long time. The chips were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, good portion sizes, friendly staff. Will definitely go back if I'm ever on the island or in Weymouth.

On vacation from Coventry, I was recommended Ray's by a local. I used 5 evenings and the food was excellent every time. The staff were friendly, especially the lady serving. Next time I'm down that way, I will definitely be using again. Cannot rate them highly enough....

This spot is great for a evening takeaway. Food quality is top notch. Chips are delicious and fish is tasty, seasoned correctly. Brought food for all the family and everyone was extremely satisfied. Staff was very welcoming and polite.

The fish was having a foul order. Went there after looking the recent reviews and ordered a fish for a takeaway and when we were ready to eat immediately after taking home, the fish was having a bad smell when we opened our order. We ate some of it as we were hungry but couldn’t eat even half of it. My tummy was upset for several times in the night. I don’t recommend this place at all 🤮🤮

We stumbled upon Rays fish and chips on our first night in Portland and were blown away with how delicious the food was. Friendly quick service as well, couldn't recommend more!

The long history of Ray and his family has been running this chippy over 20 years. The owners took over and kept the same name. Best chippy on Portland by far. There have been a few debates on FB, which is portland best fish and chips. The owners take a lot of pride in what they do. Everything is fresh to order and organised. My pops goes up on his mobility scooter and always remembers his name [Michael]. Staff is always very friendly and happy to help. The fish and chips are such a large portion that we share a large cod and chips. Fish is fleshly cooked to order, so you may have a little wait. The thing that surprises me is that there is no greaseyness to the fish or chips. Chips are crispy and light in the middle. Fairly priced for the size.

came in asked for a child’s chicken nuggets and chips witch is £3.90 (5nuggets and chips) they charged me £5.80 which was the normal (regular) portion (8nuggets and chips )

Lovely Chip Shop with friendly service. Every time I stay on Portland it's my go too chippy. Fish and Chips were really nice.

I have been a Ray’s customer for more than 10 years. Although the business had changed hands a couple of years ago, the quality of the food that they offer is always outstanding and the staff are very friendly.

Very happy, I tried rays fish and chips yesterday beautifully cooked chips and lovely fluffy fish with crispy batter no hidden charges for carrier bags and salt and vinegar, and other things that people charge for the new owners are very friendly new to the area have worked in fish and chip shops for a long time I wish them all the luck and I will be a regular customer from now on thank you

Friendly staff, the fish and chips were cooked perfectly.We got 3 small fish and chips and a 1/4 pounder beef burger, the fish and chips were really big even though we got a small (left loads of chips) and the burger was very filling and again couldn’t finish the chips.We would definitely come back the next time we come back to Portland.Recommend rays fish shop alot.

Absolutely amazing quality fish and chips, a brilliant menu selection. Excellent money for the food you get, everything is fresh, clean and delicious. The service is fast and the staff are always kind, absolutely brilliant!

Have tried this chip shop three times since new owners took over. On every occasion chips have been dry and have a texture of being reheated. Would not recommend.

Absolutely awful Fish and Chips, I didn’t realise this simple dish could taste so bad, worst I've ever had, other than the horrible taste of the fish the size of it was more like a jumbo sausage, it went in the bin after a couple of mouthfuls anyway along with the blanched chips, I've since found out this chip shop is not now being run by Ray but still trades on his good name, avoid at all costs, Owners response is exactly correct, Yes this is my review for the new owners, not the person who ran Rays before these owners took over, I wrongly presumed because it was called Rays before the new owners took over the person who had it before you was called Ray, not that matters, what does is the awful fish and chips you served me on the day, nil stars,

Really disappointing. Very greasy and far from fresh. The chips were over cooked. The batter was awful. The oil hasn't been changed in a long time. Waste of money. Couldn't eat the food as it tasted terrible. I would NEVER recommend this place.

Worst chippy around useless staff

used to be a good chip shop on portland (think previous owners ). went today was really bad sausage was terrible chips dry . curry awful . . not again . . such a shame this place used to be very good

Chips in the chip butty were great but chilli Chips were not as expected, instead of being seasoned they actually came with a large dollop of chilli con carne on top, not great when you're vegetarian!

Food cooked to order so very nice. Will take orders by phone.

Pleasantly, polite service making your food selection to order. Freshly cooked food requires a wait though (5 mins). Lunchtime visit and no queue to endure. Food quality was good and a sustantial quantity. Good selection on the menu. Premise is easily found on the main road through Eastern, Portland.

Having had a holiday home on Portland for over 30 years, Ray’s was a staple take away on a weekend or whenever. Tonight was our first visit since the new owners took over. What a disappointment. Very expensive. Chips tasted as though they had come from the Chinese next door, which they probably had, battered sausage, scampi and a small chips was £12. Lower your prices, up the quality and we may return. But I doubt it.

After trying a few of the other fish and chip shops on the island with mixed results, I thought I would give the new owners a go.... I was the typical awkward customer turning up 5 minutes before closing and ordering 2 cod and chips.... but.... they were all smiles.... thankful for the custom and the fish was awesome.... as we're the chips and curry sauce..... I have a new favourite and urge other islanders that have not tried them yet to give them a chance... you won't be disappointed.... I wasn't.... well done...😁... PS... I didn't put a picture up because I didn't realise that was an option and had already cleared my plate.

All i can say is food was not good maybe caught them at bad time but will never return .

Great portion and brilliant value for money. Three of us had dinner for £15. Absolute bargain. Tastes good. Very quick.

1st visit under the new management, everything was slightly over done, which was a shame, still will give them another go in a few weeks to see if there's any improvement.

If give this nil if I could. No idea what the food is like, ordered 2 chips one battered sausage. Waited patiently outside for 40 mins watching everyone else going in to collect. We were very viable by the door and when we eventually challenged our food was told the order had been lost. She had been watching us for 40 mins and it did t occur to her to ask what e’d ordered. There’s other chip shops on the island and we’ll be using them

Very disappointed this evening. We have previously had some of the best fish and chips here, lovely portion of haddock and chips - so when we visited weymouth we decided to return here. However this evening there seems to be a change of ownership maybe? The fish was nowhere near as good and much smaller portions of chips and the fish was much, much smaller. It was even mooted that the fish was probably frozen. We will not be returning, sadly we have to find another chippy for our tea when we visit.

I pre-ordered in the morning as being Good Friday I knew it would be extremely busy. Our order was ready at the agreed collection time and the food was piping hot and tasted absolutely incredible. Huge portion sizes and excellent value for money. Although it was absolutely hectic all the staff were still friendly and happy with brilliant customer service skills. If you want fresh and delicious food then Ray’s fish and chip shop is the place to go. Absolutely faultless.

Best haddock and chips in the area. Grab a bottle of white and park on the left hand car park on the way to Portland. Best restaurant on the planet. Don't forget the pea fritter.

Tastiest fish and chips anywhere, been going on and off for over 45 years when Ray used to run it. Present long term owners are excellent, not sure how they get the chips and batter so tasty and always cooked just right..

Paid £1.80 for chips and got about 10 chips Very disappointed!! Won't be using again.

This was a busy chippy which is why I’m so shocked at how bad it was. The chips were soggy and it tasted like they were cooked in old fat. They were awful! The place didn’t look very clean and the staff weren’t very welcoming.

We caught this chippy on the way back from Portland Bill Lighthouse. It's a great little place on the main road, and offered a decent selection of food cooked to order. It was running on limited stock due to the COVID situation but the portions were large, piping hot and really hit the spot. Kids loved the food from here. Would strongly recommend for a hearty lunch.

Open till 9pm but won't serve you after half 8pm unless you are a local. Plus looks grim, can't be5they have a hygiene rating of 5... got to be lying 🤥

Ray's Fish shop has been a consistent good value, good quality, good service vendor of fish, chips and other fayre associated with this type of outlet for many years and that's why it's so well appreciated.

I haven't been here for years. I can't believe it's popped up here. They introduced me to the mushy pea fritter possibly 20 years ago.
