Riley's Fish Bar in County Durham

Firstly may I say my father ran a very successful fish and chip shop in York for all his life. So when I choose to use a fish and chips shop I’ve shopped around before hand, and when I started using Riley’s the fish and chips were the best around, now I’m a believer in all feedback is good feedback as it gives the owner of the business and idea of the customers view of there product. I visited the shop about two months ago and sadly my meal was cold and chips had been held too long in the warming tray, I thought nothing of it at the time, as it was late Saturday afternoon and the shop had been open all day. Today I’ve been I was stood outside the shop waiting for it to open, so I was first in, and sadly the chips were quite obviously ones that had either been warmed up from Dinner were held in water too long, really hard on the outside of the chips and not warm in the middle, my father always peeled and cut fresh chips for the next shift before it opened, I ate my fish and my dogs enjoyed my chips. Sorry but twice is not good enough for me.

Just had chips tonight they were awful, tast like they had been warmed up they were really dry i just put them in the bin.

Got to be the best fresh fish served by hard working staff. Always get some when I am at my caravan.

Proper good local chippy. Came from Stockton to grab fish n chips before heading to the beach. Bloody amazing it was. Large fish was very large and brought back home a fist sized chunk for the cat because I was full. Will deffo be back.

Amazing fish, chips and mushy peas. First place I went to on my way from Canada to Peterlee. Treated my family to the best fish and chips around. Staff were very friendly with a great sense of humor. Will be getting more while in England

Got two fish and chips from here, way over priced considering what I got, I dont expect to pay 19 odd pound for two small fish’s and chips, not worth the price won’t be coming back

I bought from here after walking past and seeing a couple eating from here in their car. The food smelt lovely. When I looked at the food in the top of the fryers it also looked great. The staff were friendly and dealt with orders effectively (even though they had a problem with one fryer they said was slowing them down a little). The cod was delicious. It was cooked to perfection and had that slightly sweet taste of fresh good quality fish. The batter was light and tasted nice. The chips were neither soggy nor crispy, they were in between. Just over £11 for a large fish and chips with a large pot of mushy peas. (Which was enough to feed me and my partner)

Wow, so fresh, the fish is white and flaky, everything is fresh and you know it’s good by the amount of people go for their fish and chips. Friendly staff and a really good service. We drive about 10 minutes to go here but well worth it.

Great traditional fish and chip shop. Fried in dripping, a rarity these days. I use this business often. Takeaway and delivery. Cod is always lovely. Home made corned beef and cheese patties are delicious. I’ve marked it down based on delivery experience affecting quality of food. Mostly my delivery arrives hot and fresh with crispy batter. On some occasions it has arrived soggy, like it has been sat a long time. Otherwise I would highly recommend.

Just had fish and chip absolutely 110% . The Mrs had the scampi and was delicious. .nothing better than a family owned chippy for proper food

Best fish shop I've been to in the North east, so I'm from Gateshead and eaten at so many over my vast years but got to say this tops them all. I never get fish cakes but from here they are unreal, 1 fish cake is a meal in itself, full of fish and they are huge. Absolutely love this place. The staff are also very friendly, sometimes there's a bit of a wait but it's well worth it for the quality. Compared to other places the prices are spot on too. Would highly recommend Riley's to everyone. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

By far the best Fish & Chip shop in East Durham.

The best in miles first class food great range fresh hot great staff new items added on menu give it a go thinly battered only need to ask prices are up slightly with costs but good value for money

We drive from Shotton Colliery to go here because this is by far the best chippy anywhere, and the fish is so tasty.

I was recommended by a few people to try here. I had a large fish and chips with peas. Lovely big thick fish, It was excellent and struggled to eat all of it. Maybe a small fish and chips next time.

Friendly staff, food cooked fresh. Very funny that as I'm from down south, we don't like everything covered in batter... Staff very surprised when I asked for a plain sausage "what ya mean you don't want batta" But very friendly and food was worth wating for.

Best fish and chips in Peterlee area.

I think our fish had been kept warm for a while perhaps. The batter was a bit chewy/cardboard-like and the fish was tasteless being honest. Recommended to us. First visit, but wouldn't rush back as we didn't enjoy them. Expensive disappointment I'm afraid.

Proper fish and chips from a proper fish and chip shop. This plaice (joke 😉) has restored my faith in the local fish and chip shops. Fish and chips done how they should be done and not a smelly kebab or pizza to be seen. Word of warning, if you get large fish and chips just make sure you are hungry 😋 best in the area 👍

Absolutely the beat chip shop in the area, Food is amazing, good old school curry sauce that can't be beaten, Gravy is rich and beefy, Can't praise this place enough all round excellent chip shop and extremely good value for money.

I worked with the owner or one of the owners of this place, they have taken a run down shop and rebuilt its customer base, along with good quality food, and hard work it is getting an excellent reputation, despite recent closure it is again gaining momentum.

Visited this chippy for the first time last week, i ordered 3 large fish and chips which were cooked fresh, the fish were massive and tasted lovely and the chips were very nice, our regular chippy in Shotton is no where near as nice,its not cheap but its Rileys from now on

Just bought fish patty from there lots of batter round it but the little bit of fish and potato in it was so dry . Looked a lot better than it tasted. The tiny bit I salvaged from it was minute. One half was completely batter .Even the cat turned her nose up from it.....Need to do a lot better than this !!!!!!! Chips and gravy were OK. Dissapointed

I had not been for a few years but it's as good as ever. and just how I remembered it..Portions are generous & service is friendly..Health & safety is top class with government recommendations being carried out during this corona virus crisis..The fish is delicious and thick and there's a good menu on offer..

This is by far the best chippy I have been to in a long time. We were out in the car and decided to pop in for food on the off chance as we had not tryed this one before. When this place says traditional it really is. The place is absolutely spotless including the kitchen as you can see through into it. There was not a dirty mark to be seen anywhere. The staff are friendly and honest with you and your made to feel welcome as soon as you walk through the door. The customer service in this place in phenomenal. When my food come which was a spam fritter chips and curry sauce. They were beautiful. The chips were cooked to perfection and the fritter was quite thick and made excellent with just the right amount of batter around it. They were the best I've had in a very long time needless to say I will definitely be back, it's well worth the drive from hartlepool for great food and at very reasonable prices. My new fish and chip shop.
