Royal Baths Chinese Restaurant in Harrogate

This was our 2nd visit to this beautiful venue. The original gentlemen's baths in Harrogate is a splendid example of Victorian architecture and decoration. I could spend my time just staring at it. (NOTE - no photography allowed inside!) It is also an excellent Chinese restaurant! Catered well for my Gluten free requirement, although my choices were very limited. Booking is essential at busy times.

Very over priced when I had takeaway had chicken curry boiled rice prawn crackers cost £23 rip of for what I actually got I will avoid this place again

Best Chinese meal by far, love it, never lets you down. Staff attentive, food amazing, the restaurant is in the old bath's and the decor is beautiful. When in Harrogate please try, you will not be dissapointed.

This is one of those places that you see and think “I’ll try that one day” but never actually do. Well, do. It is marvellous. The hall-like setting is fantastic and the service is very, very good. There was a bit of a language barrier with the waiter (meat dim sum turned up instead of vegetable ordered by a vegetarian), however I will not mark it down for this as it made the experience feel that bit more authentic. The dim sum itself was unreal - the dim sum vegetable basket to be exact, was one of the best things I have eaten. As a vegetarian I never really opt for Chinese due to the lack of options on the menu however the dum sum converted me. The kitchen was flexible too - there were no steamed vegetables specially mentioned on the menu however when asked they threw together a steamed broccoli basket with a garlic and chilli infusion, which was delicious. Others had a variety of dishes (prawn toast, egg fried rice, chicken curry, chicken satay, duck spring rolls) and there was not one negative thing said. A bit pricey but worth it - I don’t mind paying more when the experience is this good, cannot recommend enough.

Love to visit this place when we're in Harrogate. It's an absolutely fabulous setting and the food is always first class. I love the crab & sweetcorn soup and we're slowly working our way through the myriad of main courses. The bill, for two starters, three mains, two bowls of rice and a round of drinks, was £90 which is very reasonable. Unfortunately, we couldn't stay longer as there are so many more hostelries to visit.

It was the best executed bad Chinese I've had, for example the lamb was cooked perfectly but the sauce and everything else was bland and boring. Nice venue, staff were helpful just old fashioned food that I don't enjoy

W.O.W amazing surroundings, amazing food. What a place, experienced the Turkish baths last night and then the opulence of the restaurant tonight. I don't think there are worlds to describe this. The food is magnificent and served at speed and with an efficiency not seen in the UK. Please try this it's amazing. Wish I'd not eaten earlier in the day.

Great food. Beautiful building. Staff attentive and polite, and swift service. We ate duck spring rolls, followed by sweet and sour pork Cantonese style and chilli and garlic chicken all good. I read other reviews but would have to disagree with those who say the food is takeaway standard. We felt the food was tasty, particularly the duck spring rolls, and kept hot with the warming plates. The only minor detail was perhaps the overall atmosphere, but it was such a beautiful building. There is a 10% service charge, but this is optional.

After reading so many good reviews of this restaurant we were so disappointed. The restaurant itself is outstanding but the food totally lets it down. Mixed starter for 2 £21, greasy, bland and overcooked. Sweet and sour chicken again overcooked and chewy. Beef in black bean sauce was ok!!!! We then ordered a chicken chow mein which was again so unbelievably bland and didn’t even look nice.

The restaurant is located in a historical building, which adds to its charm. The interior is beautifully decorated, maintaining the style of the famous baths. The atmosphere is lovely and worth the price for the quality of food.....

Had no reservation, but were seated quickly. Food was excellent. Surroundings were beautiful and we really enjoyed our meal, would go frequently if we lived near by, too bad we don't.

Well, like most have said, very beautiful building. Staff are very attentive and friendly. Thats the positives. Food was just average, nothing worthy of taking a photo of or wow factor. Price is way to steep for what you get. We had 1 fried rice, 1 boiled rice, 1 beef in black bean sauce, 1 lamb in bbs, 2 chick/sweetcorn soup, a bottle of still water between us and a latte. £86 after a disgretionary 10%tip was added! Which i believe DOES NOT go to the staff! And its VERY noisy in there, think of being in the swimming baths noise! Echoesssssss...

Stunning setting for a Chinese restaurant. Good bar and private dining rooms. Very broad selection of spirits and wines. Great service, good dishes (maybe not so much their dumplings) but everything else was very nice. Good atmosphere, would recommend.

The first impression from walking in was fantastic as you know when it’s so well decorated and set out they mean business and repeat business that is. The decor and set up was beautiful as they have kept the originality of the building whilst making it modern too. The menu wasn’t over busy and the food selection was perfect for any palate which good priced drinks as well. Starters have a good selection and we went for three dishes to share with salt n chilli Spare Ribs (Plenty of meat on them) Salt n chilli soft shell crab with a side of seaweed and everything was fresh, tasted fantastic with plenty of well balanced spices. Only one fault we found was we didn’t know how good the food was and should have order two servings of the soft shell crabs it was Superb. Mains was chicken curry with special rice which we again shared and as with the starters the mains didn’t disappoint either it was fresh, tasty and real fried rice which was a godsend when ordering when you haven’t eaten there before. Restrooms very clean and well decorated and even the kitchens are visible from the outside and great to see how well maintained and clean they were too. Looking to arrange another visit to Harrogate from Scotland soon and definitely will be booking this restaurant again but now we have experienced the food will make sure we order the starters again and try something different off the mains menu. Well done and keep up the fantastic food quality and standards and the staff looked and engaged with you like they wanted to be there.

Good choice of food. Value for money. Nice ambience. My only criticism is we waited 25 minutes for desserts. We almost gave up! Otherwise would recommend.

Chose a la carte of which there is every choice to enjoy. Started with won tong seafood soup. Main meat curry and egg fried rice.

This is a first class venue for both location and ( especially ) the food Add to that the friendly professional service and your in for a treat.

What a fantastic meal myself and my wife experienced here,an absolutely beautiful venue with friendly staff who were very helpful,,when we arrived we were seated next to one of the air conditioning vents which was a bit chily for us so we were moved immediately with no fuss,we ordered our drinks and food, even asked for something off menu which they did happily,they even gave 2 options on how I might like it,starter arrived quickly, and we were asked if we wanted main course straight away or wait a little while, the food was absolutely delicious and I can't recommend this place highly enough,,thank you for the perfect end of our weekend in Harrogate, we will definitely be back one day soon.

The building attracted us in the first instance but the food was well worthy of its fine surroundings Everything was beautifully presented, piping hot, presumably freshly made. Staff were lovely. Would definitely recommend and will return when next in Harrogate.

As we like to eat mid to late afternoon, we’re running out of places to go that are “our kind of thing”. And if you know me, I like to give good reviews too - not today. So after many years of being away, we decided to revisit the Royal Baths Chinese. The welcome on arrival was cold to almost frosty - and that was from the owner. We went to the bar (although they really wanted us to go straight to table). From the cocktail menu I was told I could only choose from the classics and that after 6pm the barman wouldn’t be making cocktails as he’d be too busy. The bar here used to be amazing and it was the perfect day to have drinks on the terrace, we didn’t want to push our luck. Also the bar is so atmosphere less- all the pictures gone and just bare white walls. We decided to go straight to table after all. Service from the staff was impeccable, some of the dishes we chose as a group were good and some very average. It was busy but again atmosphere less. All in all a very lack lustre visit and nothing like the days of when Hak was there. I don’t think that we’ll hurry back

Amazing chinese food. We both really loved it. The atmosphere was lovely and food delicious. It came out very fast after ordering but all seemed fresh. Would recommend.

The night we went in, it was empty. So there was no atmosphere. The food was good, but as I read on other reviews the staff hang around your table. This may be handy when ordering but I don't think we had a conversation that wasn't overheard.

The service was very poor for us as we are Chinese. However, as soon as an English guests came in, staff were all over them. The food is expensive and portions were poor value. The whole restaurant was empty and staff put us into a corner space. Very disappointed and won’t be going to this restaurant again.

Amazing food, great atmosphere and amazing staff a must if you're visiting Harrogate or surrounding areas.

Booked a meal here with friends as we were in Harrogate for a walk, beers and a catch up. Booking confirmation received super quick via email from the RB Team and they amended it for us slightly no problems at all. Great food, service in the most amazing building. Perfect. Couldn’t ask for more. It was busy and bustling, which made for a lovely chatty atmosphere. Recommended and we will be back.

Superb venue, beautiful surroundings with fabulous food and service. Really can't add to that. Pricier than the average Chinese restaurant, but then the surroundings, quality and attentive service is higher than average too, so we'll worth the extra.

Uniquely peculiar witnessing a smattering of diners rattle between Parthian columns under a golden domed roof. Should be a museum or debate hall. Came in for a takeaway after the fantastic spa to see the original entrance. Balked at the prices especially the dim sum. I know we’re in the “Kensington of the North” where every 10th number plate is private but come on guys 😂 Food was average.

My husband and I had the loveliest meal here this evening and what topped it was the fantastic hospitality we received from the minute we stepped through the door from Chas. We will definitely be back and we will also be recommending to all of our family and friends. All the staff were also very attentive!

We were very disappointed during our recent visit. We have been to this Chinese restaurant in Harrogate many times and it used to be our favourite, we haven’t been for a year or so.. However, this time everything has changed. The food is overpriced, the portions are small, and it doesn't taste fresh at all. While the staff are attentive, their constant hovering is uncomfortable. They watch you eat and are quick to clear your plate as soon as you put down your cutlery, without asking how the food is or if you need more drinks. This behaviour feels rude and intrusive, very uncomfortable! I recommend avoiding this restaurant. There are plenty of other places in Harrogate where you can enjoy good food and better value for your money.

Just a chinese takeaway with splendid building

Very disappointed as we were really looking forward to this meal. We were hardly seated before being constantly harassed to order. The waiters hovered constantly and we felt pressured to finish and leave. At 7.15pm we were reminded they needed the table for an 8pm sitting!! My food was bland and anaemic looking - chicken satay skewers to start and king prawns with spring onions and ginger for main. Everything was overpriced - £9.50 for a side of noodles!!!! A 10% service charge was added so a very average meal for 4 people with one drink each came to almost £200. We would never, ever return as the only thing that is great about this restaurant is the stunningly beautiful building.

We were looking forward to our visit as the building, stained glass windows and the inside were very impressive. We went around 8.15pm on a Sunday night, it was really quiet. The staff stood over us, which made for a very uncomfortable experience. The food was ok but I'm not sure if we were put off the food more because of the over enthusiastic staff. Also, a MAJOR gripe of mine is the service charge. Yes, it's optional but very embarrassing to ask to remove it. We are looking forward to visiting Harrogate again but I don't think we will come back here. Sorry guys 😔

Food was amazing, staff friendly, the poshest Chinese we've ever eaten at. Building is amazing and very clean. Option of chop sticks or fork on the tables. Food was quick and very tasty. Even the toilets were high class quality. Highly recommend this restaurant for lunchtime. It was very quiet when we were there but we like it like that.

Probably the most superior Chinease food I have eaten. Beautifully presented, fresh tasting within the most beautiful room.The staff were very polite, attentive and helpful with recommendations etc. We will be back.

I don't know why I didn't enjoy it. Service is good. But food is very ordinary. Sorry to say but being truthful a bit take away standard. I have been for the building but I won't come back for the food

Where do I start? How about at the end? Conclusion: Overpriced. Small portions. Bland. Terrible, apathetic service. Atmosphere is not comfortable or upscale. How they have 4.5 stars is beyond me. We asked for the bill three times after they asked if we were finished. Then they awkwardly bussed and clean our table with us still sat at it! Never once came by to ask us if we needed anything and avoided eye contact at all costs. Bizarre.

Great food, wonderful service and fabulous ambience at this amazing heritage location. Indeed, faultless in all respects. An all-round, not-to-be missed experience.

Really lovely spot. Amazing building, very grand experience. There was a huge waiting staff, almost one per table, and not all tables were full (we went on a quiet evening though) One of our number is Vegetarian and ordered the special rice (thinking "special" meant fancy aha), and our waitress kindly told him it wasnt veggie BUT he could request a different rice to have various vegetables added. I mention this because it speaks of the accommodation of the service staff, and it shows that the chefs do indeed cook to order. The pricing was good, all in all a lovely evening out

Beautiful building but can’t say the same about the food. Overpriced and very bland expected much more. Felt very rushed by the staff, hanging round out table waiting for a plate to become empty. Made us all feel uncomfortable

It is such a shame that the food does not match the surroundings. I can honestly say the meal I had last night was the most bland Chinese meal I have ever had. I doubt the food my husband and I was served had ever been near a wok. Even if we lived in Harrogate we would never go there for another meal.

We are visiting Harrogate for a weekend break. We weren't sure where to go for dinner but decided a Chinese meal would be nice. We didn't book but had no problem getting a table. We were delighted at what a beautiful building this restaurant is in. Truly stunning. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The staff were very polite and attentive. We had a lovely evening. Would definitely recommend this restaurant if you visit Harrogate.

We went to this fabulous restaurant pre covid & always wanted to return when next visiting Harrogate. We were not disappointed as both food & attentive service were first class, just as we remembered. We had the banquet for two & each course was delicious. Drinks were reasonably priced too in this imposing building with great decor. We will definitely return ASAP.

Has to be the best ever Chinese we go too and every bit worth the travel xxxx

Good food, good service and amazing venue

Went for a family lunch on a Sunday. Excellent service and delicious food in a lovely setting. Good options for the vegetarians in our party, including the Dim Sum. Portions were a good size.

There's no doubt the building is impressive but there's not much atmosphere. The staff were attentive but discreet. The menu is expensive but the price does not reflect the quality of the cooking. Disappointed.

Just been to the Royal Bath Chinese restaurant Highley recommed also had a good day at Wetherby races and stopped at the Dales Hotel everything was first class.

We have been this evening and wow! What a wonderful place! Stunning restaurant, amazing service and outstanding food. Spotless throughout, well turned out staff and food presentation was spectacular. Definitely the best restaurant we have been to in Harrogate. Would recommend to anyone and cannot wait to visit again.

First visit, great service and food, very good vegetarian choices, a lovely venue. This restaurant operates a 10% service charge, limited to no parking available, table’s very close together.

We had a mixed experience there. The food was delicious but service was basic and atmosphere, hmm not great, lacks any character what so ever. The building looks wonderful, but staff doesn't know anything about it, keeps saying they part-timers. Also the service charge is added on top of the bill, doesn't say anything doesn't ask just expect you to pay even the experience is not great. And as soon as you finish your food they want you to disappear. I recommend a take away to enjoy the food but not an actual restaurant experience.

We think the building is stunning. Food is extremely expensive around £40 a head, and its just simple chinese food, nothing special. You could tell the staff we're commenting on us in their own language. I also found it insulting counting our money in front of us as if we couldn't afford it. You pay premium prices you should not get this feeling.

Beautiful place, best looking restaurant we've been to. Service was also amazing. Food was good. Good selection of vegetarian options with actual vegetarian "chicken" which I've never seen in a Chinese restaurant before. Parking situation isn't great. Tables were a bit close together for my liking.

Booked at last minute as our previous booking did not accommodate for a disabled member of our party .But Royal Baths was exceptional in their service and gave us access through there disabled entrance .

Beautiful restaurant set in sympathetic refurbishment of the Royal Baths. The food was fantastic and all the staff were very friendly and attentive. Very impressive.

Excellent food and service in this amazing building. We were the only people eating throughout the 2 hours we were there so the atmosphere wasn't great. Also some more oriental music would be nice. A bit expensive but worth it for the quality of the food.

Although we were told it would be very busy with an 'End of Conference' dinner going on we went anyway...and we are so glad we did. It was the Best Chinese food we have tasted for a very very long time and even though it was busy and loud the service was excellent. Fabulous building with bags of atmosphere, if it was closer to us we would be regulars! It's not cheap however its really fabulously good.

Unique setting with delicious food. Had steak and it melted in your mouth. Attentive but not overpowering service. Will definitely go back.... Soon!
