We had booked a night at Beamish Hall, so decided to treat ourself to an evening meal and some drinks before having a relaxing evening in the hall. Decor is lovely, staff friendly and food excellent.

My son took me here for lunch I’m vegetarian/vegan and the choices on the menu delighted me! ( it’s hard to find really good food to cater for vegetarian's/vegan’s ) I had Risotto and it was so tasty, the dessert was equally amazing! I enjoyed it so much we went back the following evening, the menu had changed as it was evening service and once again it didn’t disappoint. My son really enjoyed his food too. The next day I took my sister and mother for lunch and again it was amazing for all three of us We had two courses. Then the following evening my son his partner and myself went for an evening meal and once again the food was amazing! The service was great and a very welcoming experience . The surroundings are relaxing warm and impeccable. The history is very interesting. I went back another day to the gardens and forest for a walk which is very beautiful, some fantastic old trees to see! All the staff were friendly and happy , I can’t recommend The Stables enough. I will certainly be back at Christmas on my next visit from Scotland . Bravo ……

Disappointing….both service and food Clearly short staffed when we visited today…..we were waiting so long to order drinks and food, in the end we waved away at a waitress to take our order Mains arrived……but not the starter that had been ordered? We weren’t offered condiments, and no one around to ask, so in the end, my wife had to get up and track down the waiter to get some. Mine was fine, but the wife’s burger bun was soggy…we reckoned it hadnt been defrosted properly. When we mentioned it ((she left it uneaten) when the plates were cleared, we were told that all bread is fresh and it was due to the lettuce being washed… I’ve heard some excuses but this is pushing the boundaries…. In the end the waiter knocked off a whole £2 (!);for the soggy roll . So we paid £47+ for two lunch mains and two drinks! Very disappointed as we came on a friends recommendation. It’ll be interesting to see if they respond…….I’m not holding my breath. I wouldn’t return , even if they offered a free meal next time. On the positive, the surroundings are very nice and we had a great day at the beamish museum.

We stayed at Beamish Hall and both had the steak and some drinks. The steak was excellent as were the starters - loads to choose from on the menu which looked revamped. Drinks were great too - especially the gingebread whisky.

Excellent breakfast and dinner were thoroughly enjoyed by us together with friendly and efficient service. Nice atmosphere too.

Came into the stables pub on a Saturday night at 9 pm with friends just for a drink to find that the bar area had no seats available but the area next to the bar was set for Sunday lunch and after asking the bar staff we were told that we couldn’t sit here as set for Sunday lunch. We then had to take our expensive drinks outside and sit in the cold as heater lamps not working. Is it such hard work to remove a few knives and forks? Obviously it is.

I always think it’s a lovely setting in the stables, whether indoors or in the courtyard. The gluten free options are some of the best we’ve had. Staff were so, so nice to deal with, but you do wait quite a while for plates to be cleared/orders to be taken etc. had to flag down multiple times for more drinks/deserts etc. Food was all lovely, desserts were tiny and not exactly as described on the menu - missing sauces/wafers etc. Overall though, very good every time we’ve been

Our first visit in a while, and we were disappointed unfortunately. Whilst the setting, staff and service were all great, the main attraction - the food - was far from it. My son had the burger which was ok, but my wife and I had the rolled lamb shoulder, and braised beef at £20 and £19 each. These were both very small portion size wise, arrived lukewarm and did not come across as freshly prepared meals to order. A combined bill of £71 and my wife and I came away hungry and disappointed I’m sad to say. Hoping the food, menu and pricing improves as this venue is otherwise pretty good in all other respects.

I had a disappointing experience at this restaurant. While the service was good, the food was lacking in quality. The menu was uninspiring and outdated (this ain't the 70’s), even after being recently updated. It's important for the menu to reflect modern food trends, whoever designed it should take that advise on board. Some dishes were overcooked, some were undercooked, and the fish was even served raw, is it so hard to check the temperature before serving? It seems like the effort just wasn't put into cooking anything. After paying the bill, we walked past a chef smoking outside in his work jacket, which was unappetizing. Although I had a good experience here with friends last November, it seems like the restaurant's quality has gone downhill since the holiday season.

Brilliant atmosphere and supporting environment. We had drinks at lunch and in the evening as well as food. Service was excellent and the furniture classic and comfortable.

Breakfast was awful Full English breakfast sausage awful black pudding cooked 2 much bacon under cooked. Worse breakdown I have had at a hotel,

The food tastes great however I am a slim lady and came away feeling hungry . I had a main course and desert. The portions were very small. The roast potatoes were absolutely tiny and they gave you two which was literally just a mouthful.. the dessert I ordered was sticky, toffee pudding with ice cream. Ice cream was a mouthful and a sticky toffee pudding cut was no bigger than a cream cracker. And very thin for £8:50 that’s terrible value.

Stayed twice over Christmas and new year, Lovely breakfast each morning and dinner on Christmas eve, cosy ambience. Efficient and friendly staff. Will definitely return as soon as we can

Having visited the Stables on New Year's day for the past 2 years, we booked again for this year with high hopes. The experience could not have been more different. Last year was a Sunday, but in additon to the usual delicious roast dinners, there were still other options on the menu. The year before had an excellent range of mains that felt all together that bit more special for the season. Today there were only 6 mains to choose from, all very basic (not to mention over priced), such as a burger, mushroom risotto, fish and chips, and gammon. None of this was at all tempting, we were hoping for something a bit more special such as years past in this lovely setting. The only item that appealed to 3 of our party of 4 was the steak and peppercorn pie. A waitress arrived at out table at around 12.50 to advise we currently could not order thd pie as the chef was still preparing them! At 1pm, after accepting it was ridiculous us trying to cobble together something we would like by ordering 2 starters as a main etc, (especially given these were also nothing special and over priced for what they were) one of our party asked how long before the pies were ready. We were told at least another hour, meaning what would have been by far the most popular item on this basic "lunch" menu was not even available until 2pm soonest. As one of our party had a 2:20 deadline due to starting work at 3, and the fact we were all very hungry, we left, extremely disappointed and wondering what on Earth had happened to the place. It was very telling that the restaurant was almost empty, and yet when we called both the South Causey and Black Horse nearby, they could not fit us in as fully booked until 2.30 soonest. We finally got a meal at the Shepherd and Shepherdess up the road, and even they were almost full to capacity. Will not be back, which is so disappointing especially as this was my wedding venue 4 years ago.

Firstly greeted by ‘do you have a table booked?’ Not even a ‘Hello’ or anything by what seemed to be the Manager at the host/reception area therefore wasn’t made to feel welcome upon arrival. Ordered the 2 course Festive menu to then later find a HAIR in the Turkey roast. ‘Resolved’ by a free drink which was actually added onto the bill at the end , had I not pointed this out I would have been charged for this supposed gesture of good will . Service was average but for it not being busy the waiting staff weren’t attentive and not one of them had a smile on their face - this is a shame due to the actual location and setting of this restaurant having a warm atmosphere but the staff really bring it down . Would possibly visit again as it may have been an ‘off’ day for the staff and chefs too , but wouldn’t be in a hurry to recommend .

Lovely festive afternoon tea today. We were greeted straightaway by staff and made to feel welcome. The afternoon tea was tasty and I thought the sandwiches in particular were very fresh and filled well. Some afternoon teas I find, scrimp on the filling of the sandwiches and the meat is often rubbery but these were lovely. It made for a nice cosy start to the holidays. Thank you.

My wife booked a table for 8 persons in October 2023 for lunch today 18/12/2023 at 1pm in The Stables Restaurant. I confirmed the booking this morning. Even though 2 of our party were late, we went to sit at the booked time only to find our table had been given to another, smaller party. We had to wait 25 minutes for the staff to find us another table. When they did, we were expected to squeeze into a table only comfortable for 6 but 7 at a squeeze. It was now 1.35pm. We complained about lack of space and were then offered a private room. I had to be somewhere else (Sunderland) for 2.30pm so I decided I now did not have time even for a starter. I said my goodbyes but before leaving I spoke to the restaurant manager. She couldn’t have been less caring and tried to blame our 2 who were late but I put her right about that. I heard later from my family that they rated the food (in spite of Beamish Hall’s advertising) from poor to average. Overall, quality of food and customer care was left wanting. I have been to this establishment on a few occasions but never again

My wife and I go to The Stables on occasion with our dog for Sunday lunch.As always when booking I mention that our four-legged friend is coming with us,as they are dog-friendly. However when on arrival,we discover dogs are no longer allowed inside in the restaurant ,and they should’ve contacted us,which never happened.Although we were free to have lunch in the courtyard in the cold and wet,the option of eating in the bar area ,where there was low coffee tables was also given.We took this option as it was too late to travel elsewhere. Normally if you asked for a sausage for your dog it would be no problem,but when the bill came we were charged £3.95 for one sausage! There’s no reason for us to eat there again,as the food isn’t anything special,and there are more welcoming dog-friendly.restaurants nearby. Also worth mentioning is the poor,slow ,stroppy service. This business must be doing well if it can give up on the revenue stream provided by dog owners? Never mind,their loss.

We visited as a family of 2 adults and our 4 year old daughter for what we would say was a treat out as we hadn't been out for a Sunday lunch in a long while. We were very disappointed by our meal and service and we really didn't feel comfortable to discuss this any further on the day for reasons which I will explain. Firstly we waited for a little while to be serviced at the table by which time I asked for some crayons for my daughter to be told I'll get them in a minute and they never came. I therefore needed to ask again. My husband then asked for some sauces to come with our meal they never came and I therefore needed to ask again. My husband explained the girl I asked was the same girl he had asked earlier whilst my daughter and I had been away from the table. Our meal was tasty but cold and the meat was really fatty. When we highlighted this after being asked was everything ok the response we will tell the chef. What id like know is what exactly does that mean? I'm evidently dissatisfied with our meal. Overall a nice place but disappointing service and a meal that could be better.

Firstly in the ten years I’ve used tripadvisor I have never posted a poor review like this before, but feel on this occasion I need to. We have the approach not to post online something wouldn’t say at the time, but on this occasion nobody asked and the fastest thing that came was the bill. We came here as a group of 9 to celebrate an important birthday, we planned it based on a previous event held at Beamish Hall we attended. The grounds and building are well maintained to a high standard and done well. That unfortunately is where it begins and ends as far we as everyone in our group said. From beginning to end the place oozes of could care less and poor slow service and appears management either don’t care as I find it very odd that hardly any of the good or poor have had a reply (says it all to me) In summary : Arrival: no too bad Drinks order: total and utter disaster, I do not understand why it took between 15 and 20 minutes for them to arrive, (this was after we chased them up they finally arrived). It appeared everyone waited a long time for drinks. Meal ordering: ok but un professional and too casual for the setting. Meal arrival: like being served in a canteen, shouting up the table who ordered chicken, who ordered lamb. Processed in slam the plates on the table by some of the rudest staff I’ve came across in a long while, the young man was dreadful. Then said ok then was going to walk off, they forgot three of our meals, which were brought quick to be fair. We were served by at least 6 different people who all equally did not seem to care or take of the customers as nobody took responsibility for any tables. Second round of drinks ordered: why or why in hindsight, yes it was a disaster again, took far too long and forgot some of our drinks. (Gave up in the end and said don’t bother please take it off the bill). This was again because yet another person served and nobody took responsibility or care for their customers. Deserts: it took my 8yr old nephew to ask for his child’s meal deserts as the servers we not doing their job. The adults just gave up as it wasn’t worth the hassle, the waitress said have you decided what you want for desert, errr no because we haven’t been given any menus. It was could care less approach. Have to say there appears to be many well justified reviews on here and have to agree with them this place is appalling in service, management needs to get a grip of the place. If you want a special place we will be looking elsewhere in future.

First and Last , service slow, bill fast ! The Stables Beamish Hall hotel This was our first visit to this restaurant for Sunday lunch as part a family celebration weekend , we were a group of 9 . We had booked in advance so we were directed to our table in what is a nicely decorated former stable . We were given menus after a while we ordered some drinks after a considerable wait , our drinks arrived . After another wait we gave our meal order, we were just about ready for our next drinks when the first course arrived. The first course was a little slow in arriving but was very nice . At the conclusion of the starter we made a second drinks order and waited for the main course to arrive and waited and waited . when the main course arrived we had already been in the restaurant for an hour and twenty five minutes. The delivery of the course was less than any decorum of service. The male calling out loudly the meal and putting down to each without any acknowledgement. A waitress said that’s it and started to walk away and had to be advised we were two meals short . After another relatively short wait the meals arrived . It then became apparent the lamb special was delivered without any mint sauce . A small point perhaps but we had to try and attract a member of staff to solve the issue . normally we would expect someone to check if everything was okay with the meal . Not likely , we gave up on the wine we had ordered as we were now two thirds through the meal, so went to the desk and advised them to cancel it. We finished the main and decided not go with a desert as we were by now quite confident it would not be delivered any time soon . However we had two small children who were awaiting a desert as part of the children’s meal , the 8 year old decided to go and ask for his and was directed back to the table whereupon the waitress arrived, the table was cleared and took the children’s order, as I said we had all given up on that idea . The children both got their deserts . The bill was requested and within only a few moments the bill was delivered . In fact to be honest that was the fastest thing to be delivered during the entire dining experience. The food was reasonably good but the service wasn’t bad, it was absolutely atrocious We left the premises and we unanimously agreed none of us would be likely to ever return . My advice find somewhere else to go for a meal particularly if you are in a family group . This review is not quite as comprehensive as it could have been there are many other issues with this venue , but if you don’t get the message it’s up to you . REV23 1/10

We had booked for a Birthday celebration, food was reasonable but unfortunately the service was absolutely awful. The only thing that came quickly, and with a smile, was the bill.

This is my second visit & yet again did not disapoint, we had family visiting so decided to make the most of the nice weather & sat outside in the courtyard area All 5 meals ordered arrived quickly & looked fantastic. Everyone enjoyed the food, we can't wait to come back again Hats off to the team 5 stars 🌟

I was gifted an afternoon tea voucher for my 21st birthday and what a terrible experience. Have to say it’s the worst afternoon tea I have ever had. The portions are tiny and totally not worth the £24 per person. The worst part of it all was that our sandwiches were COVERED in fluff and hair. It looked like a bear had made our sandwiches. We sent the first set of sandwiches back and then even the second set came again with fluff but we didn’t bother asking again because they were made on cheap bread with hardly any filling! For nearly £50 for 2 people you would think they could use decent quality bread with no hairs. See the photo attached to see the blue fluff. There was more black fibres but my phone would not pick them up on camera. Moral of the story- go down the road to the black horse it’s a million times better!!

Management need to get a grip as this place could be a goldmine, but if you build a system around the cost cutting and not the customers, you won’t have a business to run! Went for lunch on beautiful day, lovely setting in the courtyard……but wondered why it wasn’t rammed……and then found out. No table service because not enough staff (only 3 in total for bar and courtyard as far as I could see). You can order starters and mains but they WILL be served at the same time because “we don’t staff up enough to work out who’s had starters and who hasnt, and the kitchen can’t deal with that!!!!” Don’t think I’ve ever heard anything more ridiculous in a hospitality environment. Food was ok, but not inspiring at all. Burger was dry, onion rings tasteless and oil overload, and I’ve never had hot coleslaw before……hopefully never again too!!! More importantly HIGELY OVERPRICED!!! £14 for a sandwich! £5.10 for a regular and small coke which wasn’t anything like a coke/Pepsi but was some awful flat flavoured water. Also, front end customer service needs reviewing. Wrong side of the bed is not an option for staff persona…… Come on Beamish Hall. Get a grip on this place and turn it into what it could be, but you can only do that if you put customers first. At the minute, as you should have picked up already, it’s clear you’re not. You need customers…….so don’t forget, customers have choices!

We had two vouchers from family for Xmas we had stayed there last summer had a great meal and stay its totally gone down hill the meals poor taking long time to get served just not good enough needs help a beautiful place poor food and slow service not good enough

Went to The Stables, Beamish Hall bank holiday Monday for lunch as a Bank Holliday treat for my wife, son and daughter in law. Room was under half full so service speed was good. Drinks arrived reasonably quickly and we placed our food order. When it eventually arrived three of the dishes were as ordered but the fourth (mine) was incorrect. This meant that I had to sit and watch my guests eat whilst I waited for my food. This eventually arrived just as the others in the party were finishing theirs. Obviously they then had to sit and watch me eat mine. Great start. After some while we were asked if we would like to order a sweet. The two ladies did so but 10 minutes later the waitress returned to say one of the items was not available. The order was remade and eventually it arrived. Following this the ladies ordered a cocktail from the menu. Again, 5 minutes later the waitress returned to say that they did not have the ingredients for one of the orders. These last two issues I can forgive but surely it is not unreasonable to expect the serving staff to know what is and isn’t available on what is quite a limited menu. However, the first issue was totally unacceptable. By way of an apology were offered a complimentary drink. As this offer was made when I was away from the table it was something I only found out when the bill arrived. There was no face to face apology from the restaurant manager, just some obvious embarrassed looks from the service staff. I did not want to spoil what was meant to be a pleasant treat by making a fuss at the time but will be contact the restaurant manager directly. The prices were a little high for what was presented so I expected the value to be reflected in the service. I was far from right.

Family of 3 for Sunday lunch, service was good all 3 of us had the beef Sunday lunch the veg was OK Yorkshire pudding was lovely but the beef was very tough not nice at all told the waitress but she just she would mention it and that was it.
