Star of the Sea in Thanet

Whenever we visit Broadstairs, Star of the Sea is an essential on the list of places to eat. We adore fish and chips and can safely call ourselves enthusiasts! Needless to say, Star of the Sea live up to all expectations - and beyond. Freshly made to order, both their haddock and cod are utterly delicious - and their chips are unreal. Whilst satisfyingly filling - we can’t get enough of them! The team are always friendly, open, and make you feel very welcome. Nothing is too much trouble and you get the impression they genuinely love what they do. I also love the nice touch of the history and heritage of fish and chips on one of the tables. Helps to enforce one of our most treasured and traditional dishes of the UK. 🥰 We will of course be back. Thank you Star of the Sea!

I visited star of the sea yesterday purely to get a Savloy since I’m visiting from Newcastle and they don’t sell them there. Myself and my 1 year old son both had half after a couple of hours I got a very bad belly. Myself and my son was very sick through the night. Suspected food poisoning as this is the only thing my son and I shared that day. Disappointed. Will not be returning but I suppose that’s what happens when you warm your Savloys up in the microwave….

Not quite sure but its been a few years since we got a take away from here but last night, great fish and chips, lovely sausage for our dog. All piping hot. And served with a smile. We shall return alot sooner next time !

when we were eating outside they took our chairs because there were other customers who wanted them (maybe only because we are italian). there was not a bathroom, and a bin for trash neither. chips were awful and fish bad.

£5.50 for Skate and chips. 1st time trying it and its very nice. Bit like cod but greyer in places. The chips are so tasty, a perfect mixture of fat soft ones, smaller crispy ones and a mixture of both Really tasty Well Done

There are two types of fish and chip shop in the world. Good ones that you're pleased you chose, and average ones where you think, that could have been better. This is a good one.

I have been coming to the thanet coast area since childhood and tried multiple chippies. I can honestly say Star of The Sea is the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. The chips are crisped to perfection whilst maintaining the perfect softness inside , and the fish portion was generous and perfectly battered. I will be coming here every time I visit the area.

Amazing place, KSE vouchers work there but even without them the food was super affordable and tasted amazing (the fish is a bit oily and they sometimes oversalt the chips a little but I personally didn’t mind that)

They advertise gluten free fish and chips Unfortunately they do have gluten free batter but it is cooked in the same fat as batter with gluten They did point this out - it means that those with coeliac disease cannot eat their food

Beautiful cooked fish in light, fluffy batter with the perfect chips. The staff are so lovely & accomodating. They made an honest mistake with our order, and were kind enough to offer us an extra portion + half our money back. Graciously accepted the extra portion but wouldn't dream of taking the money back ofc. Willing to bet this is the best chippy in Broadstairs!

This is the only place I'll have fish and chips in Kent.

Unfortunately no chicken quarters are sold here which is strange as I usually would have this for my dietary requirements following an operation on my stomach. Whilst queuing last night I was frustrated that people arriving after me were being served first because of them being regulars by a young lady behind the till. It left an unwelcome feeling to me and my wife which was a shame as the week before the young boy in there was brilliant!

Having recently relocated to Broadstairs, I have had the pleasure of visiting your establishment three times already. During one of my visits, I had the delightful experience of being served by a young gentleman who exhibited exceptional politeness and attentiveness. His conduct surpassed expectations for someone of his age, and I was truly impressed by his outstanding behavior. On March 1st, I had the pleasure of visiting your establishment once more, accompanied by my parents. During our visit, we were attended to by Jamie. I must commend Jamie for delivering exceptional service and for engaging us in a delightful conversation. The quality of the food surpassed our expectations, making our experience truly enjoyable. Thank you for consistently providing such wonderful service.

Great to go by and get something to eat and then the price of £7 for a meal with a drink is totally fine, the people are very nice and the surroundings are great too

I am surprised that as there is a better quality chip shop and better value 50 yards away, that this chip shop does not reduce its prices as it is way too expensive

The cod fish was so hard n chewy I had to throw it out . No taste at all . Felt like it was just taken out from a frozen bag n then fried . For £7.50 absolutely terrible. The fish itself felt stale .

In all the years weve been here, its the first time weve been here. Stunning , friendly service. Excellent freshly cooked food. Really good pricing and my dog loved his jumbo sausage. We will return, for sure !

Visiting friends in the area and popped out for a fish and chip lunch. We sat inside to eat, not much room but we managed. The Cod and Chips was very nice and all was eaten by us. Would use this chippy again.

Cod bites had hardly any cod but lots of batter. Medium cod, very small. Chips were like small crispy scraps. Tiny onion rings. Nice gherkins. Gravy nice. Staff were rather humourless. Reasonably priced but I think pay a bit more and go somewhere else.

Visiting family and she recommended this fish and chip shop. Was lovely we had the cod , haddock , sausage and scampi which was all freshly made. The chips were also a 10/10. Served by young lads with great service as they were really busy.

Been ordering here for 7 years, we’ve only ever had one problem and they rectified this right away but after the rudeness from the girl answering the phone this evening towards my wife was disgraceful, the attitude was disgusting! Turns out this happened a few weeks back aswell when my wife was with my kids when she was in there. We put it down to having an off day We did not go ahead with our order and decided to go elsewhere These 2 incidents have lost a customer in us and by the looks of another recent review she will continue to lose that business money

Wow what awful customer service from the two young ladies in here yesterday. Went in with my 8 year old daughter to order food/ drinks. Went to get a cold drink from the fridge and was rudely told not to walk on the wet floor. So the lady working in there went to go and get a drink out for us. We couldn’t see what was in there so we opted for a Fanta as she was being less than helpful. We had ordered haddock & chips, the lady then served a man that had gotten there after us exactly what we ordered whilst we were still sat waiting, she also said nothing to the other customers about walking across the wet floor to get drinks whilst we were sat there. To top it off the lady serving then refused to give us a box for my daughters chicken nuggets which had been wrapped up in paper which would have been hard for a child not to drop. My daughter is autistic. We visit this place often and in winter months (usually fab customer service but beyond disappointment this time) . The food was good as always but dire customer service from these young ladies .

Definitely wouldn't go back, chips were overdone and inedible.all stuck together. No wonder it's cheap next time I'll pay more elsewhere. Ashame really as my mum has used them a few times.

Disappointed with the fish and chips. Large order, good customer service. Clean tidy and efficient. However the fish was more batter than fish. Chips were small cut and blackened bits , most ended up binned. The option of delivery was not available. I felt I'd wasted my money. Sorry but won't be returning and won't recommend.

Crispy batter, light and buttery but not greasy on the cod. Fat chips perfectly cooked with a few crispy bits. Utterly delicious. Get take away and sit on a bench on the promenade overlooking the beach.

Having frequented Star of the Sea for some years, I’ve always found the food on offer there to be of the highest quality. But, of late, I’ve not enjoyed their fish and chips at all. The last time bought was the worst. The chips/fish were extremely greasy and to top it all; nigh on each chip had a black bit of potato eye in them. It rendered the fare visually and physically very unappetising and inedible. Whether this has been a change in frying oil used and old potatoes to keep down the costs; one can only guess. I’ve always recommended this fish and ship shop to people but I won’t be anymore.

American here so take this review with a grain of salt. Best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Nothing in the states even compares and I’m from New England. We try to pretend like fish and chips are a specialty. The biggest difference is how perfectly light and crisp the batter is. Salt and vinegar on the “chips” is a revelation I’ve never experienced. LOVED IT

Freshly cooked cod and the chips was fresh not frozen chips, cooked to order. Very friendly staff, eat in or take away, popular with all the locals, will be eating there again

On the positive side the fish was quite fresh. Unfortunately the size of fish was pretty small (ordered large, but the portion was no fit/bigger than half the box; maybe the made a mistake????). Plenty of chips, quite greasy though. Friendly staff, fast service.

Cod was ok but chips are the worst I have eaten. Was re-cooked I think, if not dont know how they were cooked. Won't be going there again.

Worst chips I have ever tasted. The person serving must have known the chips were very old, very oily and were not even warm. Why serve such nasty food? I bought saveloy & chips 🍟 . She had to make the saveloy for me & it was OK. But she must have known the chips were not. If you can't trust the shop you can't use the shop. I went as a tourist so ate the chips back in my car so couldn't get back to return them. The Owner of this shop should be ashamed of themselves. Tourists to Broadstairs should be very wary of using this dishonest & greedy establishment.

Bought sausage savaloy and chips for my friend her son and myself . Sausage and savaloy were over heated in the cabinet and chewy the chips were hard and i was embarassed. Shame really !

We went on the recommendation of a friend and ended up returning. The quality, variety and price is very good. They like to cook from fresh where possible, so everything is at its best and is hot! Their customer service puts a lot of restaurants to shame - friendly, obliging, helpful.

It doesn't look much from the outside but the quality, portion size and value are excellent. They offer a variety of fish and seafood. They try to cook everything fresh - you may have to wait a few minutes but it's served in top condition and hot!

We much enjoyed our visit, eating in the sunshine at the table in front of the shop. Good range of fish - we both opted for skate wing in batter which was excellently done.

If you want unfussy very well priced and most importantly tasty fish and chips them head here...Away from the more pricey beachfront establishments, though this place fits the the brief. Very friendly staff too. Will return on our next visit. Excellent

Excellent delivery service and great food

We had a family gathering of nine people and ordered fish and chips, meat pie and chips and sausage in batter and chips to be delivered as close to 6pm as possible. The delivery man arrived exactly at 6pm and food was terrific. Everything was tasty and hot and we had a very enjoyable meal. Very highly recommended.

This is only a small fish and chip shop in the town but it has room for a couple of small tables at which to sit and eat in. The prices were very reasonable compared to othe similar establishments in the vicinity. I'm very fussy but the quality of the fish and chips was really good. The chips were well cooked and most enjoyable as I dislike pale hardly cooked chips that you often get. The gentlemen serving us gave my wife some advice on the different types of fish available which was most helpful. All in all a pleasant experience.

Small chips - they were not joking….never seen such a small portion of chips - not even enough for a five year old. Should be embarrassed serving such small portions.

I thought I would try here today for a change....big mistake. I ordered regular chips,cod and curry sauce. I couldn't quite believe the small box handed to me along with the paper bag which had the pot of sauce,it just seemed far too small to...

Had two Haddock and chips today. The Fish was freshly cooked which was very encouraging and piping hot when we got it. However it wasn't great quality, too much oil and the chips soft and greasy. Wont be going back..

Outstanding quality food for a fair price, with great service too.

I found the staff very rude, took 5 min to notice I was waiting, they were too bust chatting, then 20 min after taking my order they asked, " what was it you wanted?". I asked have you not started cooking it. They said "If you're mot happy, so somewhere else", so I did. And I had a lovely day at the sea side.
