Taj in East Dorset

Absolutely sensational. Food is to die for, service absolutely fantastic. It’s a real homely restaurant and you don’t get that very often. We will definitely be coming back for our annual family meal with all 25 of us! Thank you

I thought it would be important to make a review as a non local but somebody that is definitely no stranger to curry. Taj is a decent sized establishment with friendly staff, however, portion sizes seemed to have been purposefully minimised for maximum profit. £13.95 was charged for a bog standard traditional dish, with tiny bits of chicken which were massively over cooked and chewy. This is by far the most I have paid for that type of dish at any local town or village Indian before or since. The onion Bhaji's were raw in the middle and had a distinct taste of washing up liquid, for £7.75 this was quite frankly ridiculous. The pickle tray chutneys/dips were tiny and not fit for more than two people. The curry itself was to an expected heat for that dish and had some flavour but unfortunately it looked as if the people before us had spilt a lot on the table cloth and it hadn't been changed for our sitting. Service was good until it came to paying the bill and we were left waiting for ever. We left feeling very underwhelmed and with significantly lighter wallets. Won't be back. Mr Curry.

This is one of our favourite restaurant, delicious food, excellent service and very friendly staff, popadon were warn and crispy, tandoori chicken was two legs not one. Chicken chat purée was delicious

I said to my husband - this is like we’ve ordered this from somewhere else. It tastes horrendous. Everything was cold as well. Then I come on here to see the 2 most recent reviews asking the same question - is there a new chef? Couldn’t even eat it. Will have to find an alternative now. Such a shame was my favourite in Poole!

I arrived in a wheelchair and the staff saw me outside in a wheelchair. A member of staff opened the restaurant door to let me in and they showed me to a table that was accessible for a wheelchair to get under. I then had my order taken and I was well looked after by the staff that were working there last night. Thank you very much

Just want to ask if you’ve changed your chef? I order from here a lot and always been so lovely! Ordered a delivery tonight and the curry just tasted of pure coconut, no seasoning or spices. Had so much coconut in it was so pale!

We picked up a Takeaway on Sunday 18th March. We’re disappointed as it didn’t taste as good as our Takeaway’s from Taj before, I said it’s got to be a different Chef. Who knows but now of course they cost more money than a year or so ago. Makes you think twice before spending out in the future.

We had a mixed experience with our dinner last night. My starter, stuffed pepper, tasted ok but the pepper was still half raw and the dish was luke warm. With some added mango chutney it was ok. Both our main courses, chicken korma and chicken tikka marsala, tasted really nice but my korma had obviously been standing around for quite sometimes as the sauce on top had started to congeal a bit. Portion size was good. Drinks were awful, my diet coke was completely flat and our coffee and cappuccino were so weak and watery, they were undrinkable. We sent all of these back. This used to be a really great Indian restaurant but sadly they are cutting too many corners now, we won't rush back.

Taj has become our favourite Indian restaurant. We had the banquet deal ( you just have to watchout for the surcharges, an extra £6 for any seafood, fish or duck) Absolutely fantastic meal again and generous portions. Excellent service from the waitress. I had a Lamb Tikka Xacuti, a dish I haven't found anywhere else. Quality and full flavour was superb. It tasted great on the night and even better the next day where we took the remainder home.

Absolutely tasty food, ranged from the Chicken Naga, Lamb Mughlai 3 different rice and Chicken Tikka Biriani, plenty of pops and pickles. Keema Naan.

We visited for lunch on Christmas Day. The staff had created a lovely festive atmosphere, and the food was amazing. We left with lots to take away too. Definitely ticks the boxes for a memorable meal without any of the stress of cooking on Christmas Day.

We had the most amazing Christmas lunch at the Taj today. The food was amazing, very reasonably priced and we were even given an extra main course and a Indian drink on the house. The atmosphere was really relaxing and special, service exemplary and so friendly. On our departure we were even presented with a very good bottle of wine. It really made our Christmas day - we will definitely go back again soon.

Friends recommended this restaurant, however very very disappointed with the food, it was over cooked, over priced and would not return.

Basically at just after 8pm they decided they were closing so hinted heavily we should leave. Crap service, food average, drinks ridiculously overpriced. Generally rubbish go to broadstone for 20029 instead of this place. Rip off!!

We called in for dinner and was our first visit, the staff were lovely and setting welcoming. The place was busy but sadly we found the food lacking, to much sauce on everything and most of the good red!! Maybe just our choice.

We have ordered take-ways on a number of occasions. Each time, the orders have been efficiently taken over the phone, the food has been ready for collection at the specified time and the food has been truly delicious. The chicken has always been amazingly tender, and the dishes are never swimming with ghee. Staff are very welcoming, friendly and efficient. We thoroughly recommend this rstaurant. We already have planned our next trip.

The food was very good and the staff were pleasant. However, the decor could do with a bit of refresh.

Really looking forward to going out and not cooking, had 'twenty something' children home for holiday so booked a table for 6. Good welcome and table ready for us, drinks order taken promptly as was papadum order. Ordered starters and mains, arrived in a timely fashion - all good so far. The food was of varied quality, mixed kebab was good, onion bhajis were stale and very greasy, samosas ok. Mains arrived, mostly good with nice amount of flavour but the Tarka Dhal was incredibly salty. We finished what we could and were offered takewaway tubs for leftovers - great. Plates cleared away, then.........nothing, no service whatsoever, hey, what about dessert? coffee? another drink? Please? After what seemed like forever. we gave up and made for the door - payed at the bar on the way out. Did not feel like a night out, can cook much better food at home, cost £30 per head, poor service. If you like the food here get a take away, otherwise, don't bother.

We thought we would have a change from our usual favourite Indian restaurant so we gave Taj a try. We had the gourmet menu deal. I must say, service and quality of food was great with generous portions. All in all a very good meal. Just two minor observations, just check the small print as seafood dishes and duck carry a premim / extra charge. My curry although asked for "fairly hot" was what I would call "mild" I will know for next time ( which there will be )

We ordered takeaway as the wife was too tired to cook. Estimated pickup time was 25 mins; the food was ready to be picked up when I arrived. The food was lovely and at the right temperature when I arrived back home. Everyone tucked in and we had a lovely family dinner. Thank you; will use again.

We were staying locally so googled local Indian restaurants. Reviews were fab so we ventured across. The warm welcome was a great start; the cleanliness was second to none and the food was absolutely stunning. Staff were the perfect level of attentive. We are based in Central London so have our fair share of great restaurants. The food here was better than most . Would tempt us back to Dorset. Great place to celebrate our first wedding anniversary!

Just ordered take away of Tandoori mixed starter, chicken tikka masala, pilau rice, garlic Nan with poppodoms. Told order would be delivered within the hour, Arrived very promptly after approx 40 mins. Food was absolutely delicious. Chicken was moist , tender and very flavourful. Very good portions, in fact we couldn’t eat it all !! Excellent value. Highly recommend.

Ordered our food by phone told it would take up to 60 mins. Food arrived within that time Garlic Chilli Chicken, Chicken Jalfrezi, both had mushroom rice and a side of onion bhaji absolutely delicious. Thank you very much.

Arrived promptly within specified time. Overall the food was pleasant and plentiful with the exception of the mixed grill-maybe in the restaurant presented on a plate it would look sufficient but in the tub, it didn’t look much. No complimentary popadums so make sure you order if you want them. Sagwala was lovely, I had chicken which was perfect, OH had lamb which was slightly tough.

Having read the reviews we were looking forward to our takeaway. I am afraid it was disappointing. We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Pathia, nan and rice. The chicken tikka was so salty I could not eat it, the Pathia was ok, but at most a 3 out of 5 and the naan was soggy.

We ordered vegetable Biryani, Chicken Rezela, chicken Adrok, Takha Dhal and papadoms. It was the best selection of food we have ordered from this restaurant, which we use regularly. 100% recommend this takeaway. Thank you Taj!!!

This was so good. Huge portions but lovely food. I had butter chicken which was to die for. Hey husband had korai and all the extras which was amazing. Quite pricey but worth every penny

Having picked up the new 20yrs Celebratory menu upon collecting our Sunday night Meal Deal yesterday, I just had to thank Taj, Sami and the team for their wonderful 20 years of first class customer service both to Patrons (back soon!) and to collectors of their delicious cuisine from the Corfe Mullen area and beyond. I look forward to the January Celebrations (according to the relevant Govt Tier prevailing, of course). Cannot recommend this establishment highly enough - 20 more years please!- Mr Holding

We’ve just enjoyed an excellent takeaway for a midweek treat!The quantity of the Chicken Tikka Pasanda and Chicken Biryani was just so generous that we’ve got another meal for tomorrow too. The chicken was decent sized pieces and so you didn’t feel short changed; as so often can happen with a takeaway. Sadly the vegan options weren’t as flavoursome as our son had hoped for, but he did enjoy the sakaloo; which is prepared ‘vegan friendly’.Brilliant value and we’ll certainly return.

We booked for an early dinner. We always try something different from the Menu and the Chicken Tikka Persanda was great. The cost of a glass of wine was a shock. £9 for a glass means I will choose Water next time

Very enjoyable take-away that included two very tasty dishes. Good value and good flavour. Second time we have used this venue whilst visiting and would use again.

Ordered a takeaway from the Taj for a celebration meal; spent over £60 on curry etc. We felt like they were a bit stingy - no mango chutney or yoghurt with the popadoms we ordered and nothing else thrown in for free like many other takeaways that we order from (with which we get a couple of free popadoms or onion bhajis) . Curries also weren’t very warm upon arrival so we had to reheat (some in microwave and some in oven as mix of plastic and foil). Food was very tasty though.

Booked this when staying in Wareham with friends and family. Weren't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. Excellent service, including the covid protocol, and even better food. We all had different dishes and all were fantastic. Only downside was the drinks were very expensive, over £8 glass of standard rose and £6.50/pint of kingfisher. After a few between us over the meal it soon became a pricey night. Despite that would visit again as the food was great.

Wow! So impressed with our experience at Taj. These guys have gone above and beyond to make dining here a safe and welcoming experience. Food was amazing and service impeccable. We’ll definitely be back.

Yesterday was the first time I’ve been to the Taj since before lockdown (although we’ve been getting takeaways!) and it was absolutely delicious, as usual. I spend most of my time in Glasgow - a place renowned for its Indian restaurants - and yet the Taj in Corfe Mullen remains the best Indian food I’ve ever had and I always make sure we go there when I visit home. The safety measures they are taking are second to none. You are asked to put hand sanitiser on upon arrival and given a (non invasive) temperature check. The staff are all wearing face masks, gloves and some wear visors. The spacing between tables is excellent and there are see through screens in between them. Even though the safety measures are extensive, it didn’t feel “weird” and the experience of eating in the restaurant was just as pleasant as it always is.As usual the staff were lovely and the service very fast.

Fantastic meal tonight at the Taj. Excellent safety measures- temperature taken on arrival, hand sanitiser provided, screens between tables , all staff wearing masks etc. Felt very safe and the food was delicious. Not been since lockdown but will be going back very soon. The Sunday night offer is such good value too.

In my opinion the Taj is the best Indian restaurant in Dorest. It may not be the cheapest but they have a large selection of dishes and all of those we have tried have been lovely.We went this weekend, the first time since the lock down has been eased. We were very pleased about the safety measures, all staff were wearing gloves and face masks, our temperature was taken when coming in and there were plenty of handsanitisers. Unlike with some other restaurants, we are happy to visit again whilst there are still Covid-19 concerns

In fairness, and for full disclosure, we’ve survived lockdown in large part thanks to takeaways from Taj (excellent as always), but it was a real treat to be able to visit the restaurant again. Apart from the staff wearing face coverings, nothing has really changed - I had SO hoped that the “new normal” would be as close as possible to the familiar old one. The Taj staff have definitely played their part. The food, of course, was plentiful and as tasty as ever.

Enjoyed a takeaway from the Taj a few weeks ago. We took advantage of the Sunday night deal, great value and good food.

..... what a disappointment!Having not tried any local restaurants for home delivery since a year ago, we tried Taj this pm. Exactly the same complaint, tasteless food & too much colouring. When mentioned to the manager, Sam, his explanation was that this is how locals like it, unlike in other areas where its liked hotter & more flavoursome. What's annoying is that it's pre paid; if we'd been in restaurant we'd have just left it & not paid in full.We give up on Indian restaurants locally.

The whole country is in lockdown but we’ve just received the most amazing takeaway. What can I say but thank you very much. Wholeheartedly recommend.

Sorry Taj. We always love our meals in the restaurant. Tonight we decided to have a takeaway with our Grandson, very disappointing it wasn’t very WARM and my Grandsons choice Chicken tikka masala was just all sauce and a few pieces of chicken .

This was recommended to us so we went for a birthday celebration. As the birthday was a Tuesday we were able to take advantage of the £14.95 banquet night. The pompodums were ok but not enough chutneys for a party of 14. My mixed kebab starter was ok and my husbands onion Bhaji was lovely. My main of chicken balti was lukewarm with cold Bombay aloo and cold rice and my husbands lamb balti was also lukewarm with very chewy meat and cold Bombay aloo and cold naan. When the waiter came to ask if the meal was ok I told him it was cold and he offered to get the food reheated (?). The deal is supposed to include a coffee which was never offered. I feel that with two wines and two beers and two meals it was a complete waste of £60. I was so disappointed as I was led to believe that the food was "amazing"!

We visited last evening and enjoyed the special gourmet meal at £14.95 per person. This was unbelievable value and the food is of the best taste and quality, could not recommend this Indian enough. By far the nicest Indian I have visited, both in decor, food and the very friendly helpful staff. Of note a desert is not included in the price as coffee is classed as the fifth course !! although we were way too full to even contemplate a desert at all (takeaway boxes supplied for leftovers - of which there were plenty!!) Booking advisable as it was heaving and leave plenty of time to find a local parking space especially if it is raining !!

My husband and I went here on Tuesday to there banquet night. The service and food was excellent but a bit expensive. Lovely for a treat.

This is my first negative review but felt I owe it to other vegetarians that may consider going here as this really is appalling. I requested vegan options by phone before arriving and told this wouldn't be a problem. Was also told not a problem when I arrived as well (thought I would check again), even though not on menu, which I thought was accommodating. However, I then found chicken in my curry. Wan't offered any form of discount even though i couldn't eat the curry so left never to return! Excuse by abrupt waitress was they were busy as though that is an acceptable excuse. I'm just glad I wasn't allergic otherwise I would have been in trouble but still made me feel bad having been vegetarian for many of years. I got the feeling they pulled out the larger pieces of more obvious chicken out of a chicken curry and treated that as being their vegetarian option as there were loads of small chicken bits.

Many years ago we used to go to a wonderful restaurant run by Taj and although it was good when he left, it simply didn't have that little extra touch. Now we've found him and I can highly recommend a visit! We've been in twice and had a take away, always amaziing. You won't find better.

Went to 2 eateries/pub before I found the Taj on the internet as One was closed for refurbishment and the other I felt was smelly and run by kids‍♀️ So the recommendations looked good so went for it, lovely greeting, great wine list and food menu was all the old time favourites and more!! Wow, the portions were huge, loved there mixed Bajis, and we got a doggy bag to go back with, we will return, thank you

The Taj gave a group of us another great meal - an amazing choice of excellent food, served in a quiet efficient manner.

Our local Indian restaurant, been around a 10 times past year, normally ok but this time not. Ordered a prawn starter which was completely raw in the middle, not offer of discount on the bill and service very slow seeing as there were on two other table in the restaurant. Not sure what’s happened as normal good?

Visited the Taj while on holiday in Dorset and have to say it’s the best Indian restaurant I’ve ever been to. Food and service were excellent. Please open one in Kent !

Although it is on the out skirts of Poole and not in a busy night life area it is well worth making the effort to go here. We visited early (7.30) on a Friday evening and was surprised to see it nearly full. The staff were very pleasant and we had a table within about 5 mins, even though we hadn't booked.

Visited here when saying nearby last week and was lucky enough to go on Tuesday, which is the special offer gourmet 5 course meal night, which is any starter, any main, any side dish, any rice or nan and a coffee for £14.95 each! The food was big portions and nicely cooked, good quality. I would say that I found the food on the menu to be expensive so would definitely recommend going in on Tuesdays. Remember to book too as they were absolutely heaving in there and the waiter said you usually can't hear yourself think as it's so noisy. Nice décor in there too!

Visited this restaurant again tonight and as always an excellent meal. Staff are lovely, courteous and attentive. Thoroughly recommend.

My son and I love visiting this Indian restaurant. Fortunately we have never pre booked and they have always managed to fin us a table. We choose on the day a different meal and have never been disappointed. The staff are welcoming and pleasant. I have a wheelchair and this is never a problem. Always be my first choice

Decided to try something different and was recommended this restaurant. Chicken Tikka Biriani was amazing. The Chicken itself was melt in the mouth and the Tikka spices were spot on. It was so good that I ordered extra to take away for dinner the following day - Will definitely be back for another new dish

Great food! Chicken tikka biriani isn’t usually a dish I’d go for when I go for an Indian because they’re usually be a bit dry, however I gave it a go at Taj Restaurant and I was amazed how delicious it was! It was full of flavour and the chicken was tender! It was my first time and I will be visiting this place more often!

This wasn't the first meal I've had from the Taj but I have to stay, the flavours are always spot on and it's continuously top notch!

Chicken tikka biriani is a must if you visit Taj. It's rich, full of flavour and packed with succulent chicken tikka.

What can I say... the food was absolutely faultless. Incredibly delicious with the perfect balance of spices. By far the best Bengali meal I have ever eaten. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone, and will certainly be going again! Thank you for an amazing meal!

We visited the Taj Indian Restaurant whilst on holiday, staying in the local area. The food we had was really good, that included the starters and main courses. The service was very good and the staff were very friendly and polite. If we are in the area again, we will definitely return to this restaurant.

Excellent meal last night as always. Good quality food, lots of choice and something for everyone whether you have special dietary requirements or you’re vegan or vegetarian. Friendly staff, clean light and airy restaurant. Can highly recommend this restaurant.

Been to the Taj a number of times now and can't complain about any of them. The staff are always very friendly and efficient and the food is always great. My compliments to the chef.

The Tuesday special offer of a five course meal for just under £15 makes the occasional midweek visit to Taj an absolute must. The food was as well cooked as it always is and the welcome just as warm as ever. A thoroughly enjoyable evening and a reminder that we mustn’t leave it long before going back.

We had takeout. It was delivered within half an hour, piping hot and perfect order. Extra papodums too!

This is my favourite Indian restaurant in the whole of the UK. I now live in Scotland, but whenever I visit Dorset I make a point to come here. Nothing compares to it.

We dined very early before a theatre trip. The service was excellent and quick. Everything was very fresh the poppadoms were excellent. Our main courses were also good with very generous portions. We intend to return

Visited last night with my family. Not greeted when we walked in, although there were 3 staff standing around. The restaurant was busy but there seemed to be alot of staff on duty. We waited 10 minutes to have our drink order taken, and had to ask someone to take our food order. Our food took over an hour to come to the table and when it arrived it was luke warm at best. We were told that they would cook it again from fresh??? But I assume it was reheated as it came back fairly quickly. We had to ask twice in the meantime for more drinks. All the mains - chicken mossalla, chicken bhoona and balti chicken were all very red??? in colour and tasted pretty much the same as did the Bombay aloo. The best thing about the meal was the nan bread which was excellent. If cold. The bill arrived without the promised reduction, which we had to query. The drinks bill for 4 and a half pints of draught Cobra and a small cordial was over £30 and was not itemized. This makes the Cobra over £6 a pint??? Really??!! As a general comment - the menu is huge. Unless they have a kitchen the size of a small town then all those sauces cannot be cooked fresh, which possibly explains why it all was much the same. I don't like to judge a place on one visit but am very unlikely to go back. A shame as have recently relocated to just up the road. Perhaps the takeaways are better than eating in???

Staying in a B&B; locally we were recommended to Taj. It was lovely. Such helpful staff and a range of specials which gave us the chance to try something new. Reasonable prices and great service together with the excellent food makes this a great place to eat

I do not usually enjoy Indian food but visited Taj as part of a group, food was fantastic and the service was brilliant, a little on the pricey side but you get what you pay for. Had a very nice meal, some nice wine in a welcoming atmosphere, not a lot more you can ask for. Highly recommend

Our first visit to this restaurant, a Birthday celebration. We warmly welcomed and the service was excellent. Our choices of food could not have been better. A super evening. Could not be faulted. We will be back.

This has to be the best Indian restaurant in Dorset. We've had several meals from here now and each time the food has been outstanding. The restaurant is very clean and the staff are very friendly and pleasant .... Highly recommended

The restaurant is decorated to a very high standard with a contemporary mood. The service was first rate, just as staff should be, attentive but not intrusive. The menu is extensive and packed with very interesting house specials. Our food arrived very quickly and was very mild as requested by my fellow diners. Their Biryani was packed with chicken and looked very appealing. Unfortunately my Balti was similarly mild, bordering on the bland, this was a disappointment but understandable given my two partners requests. The Naan that accompanied my balti however was fresh, with a smoky flavour and a coating of melted butter, beautiful. For less than £20 per head I think overall this represents great value for money.

Celebrated my 60th birthday. Lovely table and great food. Surprised by a birthday cake with sparkler at the end of the meal which was a lovely touch. Outstanding service throughout our time there. Highly recommended

It was a busy Saturday evening but that was no problem for them. Right from the warm welcome when we came in, the evening meal was as good as ever. The only problem I always have at this restaurant is deciding what to choose because the menu is comprehensive to say the very least. All the food, as ever, was superbly flavoured and served with a smile. It won’t be long before we go back again.

It was quite late by the time I arrived, around 9:30PM on one of their Tuesday evening special deal nights, so naturally it was very busy. I was promptly seated despite that, and I ordered my food.

Visited here on weekend away. Lovely atmosphere, staff delightful. Food was good could have been a bit spicier but really enjoyed it all. Definitely will return.x

I went here on Friday night and got there as soon as they opened as we have two young children. The staff were really friendly and the food was delish.

We visited one sunday night recently. The place was busy but not full. The food was generally very good and was reasonably priced. Both starters were good. The Malaya wasnt quite to my personal taste, but nevertheless was both well cooked and of a reasonable size. Would definitely try again.

We found this curry house whilst we was on holiday and decided to give it a try, first impressions was good with the staff member quickly setting us up with a high chair and moving the tables to accommodate at this point I'll say I was impressed every waiter and in particular the waitress all made the effort to interact with my little boy and I really appreciated that, we ordered starters and mains everything turned out in a timely fashion and of a good quality and tasty.

Always though the Taj was good, but I shan't be booking again. Arrived with friends group of 4 pre booked. Ordered drinks, one being G and T, 3 drinks arrived, 15 minutes later waitress arrived to say sorry the brand of gin wasn't available, no problem but why that long? still we all carried on talking and laughing, then after 10 minutes had to go and ask if anyone was going to take order! Waiter arrived and took orders, I ordered garlic Chilli Chicken Pilau rice and a Chapati, with a chicken tikka starter. Tikka arrived and was warm and rubbery, when mains arrived rice was warm not hot, chapati was cold and dry, and garlic Chicken was warm not hot. Very poor. The others on the table weren't much better. Normally I will inform not happy but really couldn't be bothered. Plates cleared no one asked if wanted coffee or pudding. Struck us that new owners and that no direction given to staff. Coats handed back, and no effort to help int jacket. All and all very very poor experience and we all thought so. You shouldn't leave a restaurant and walk back to the car discussing why it was so bad. Sorry Taj you need to up your game, or you will become a thing of the past.

My husband and I recently visited the Taj Indian, Corfe Mullen. We were served by a lovely young man called Torical, a true credit to the restaurant. The food was absolutely excellent. I ordered a chicken dish and the chicken was NOT the processed rolled chicken most curry houses in Poole seem to serve but proper fillet of chicken. The curry and everything served to us was delicious and we will definitely be visiting this place regularly. It's very busy so booking is advisable but you WON'T be disappointed at all. Superb!

We have recently visited the restaurant on their Banquet Night which has been very successful on both the occasions. Our first visit was for a family meal for 5. We didn’t book and was very lucky to be accommodated. Our last visit was for a table for 2 which we booked ahead. Booking is a must as it is full all evening. The staff have changed since our previous visits which is a shame as they had been working at Taj for years and were very pleasant but the new staff that served us were very nice. The banquet offer is ridiculous with mountains of food and at the normal portion sizes so no scrimping back as it’s on an offer. The service was very attentive even with a full restaurant. The food quality was very good. The lamb was very good however we did feel the chicken was on the processsed side of texture. Still very tasty but was lacking in the texture of the chicken. We will certainly be back.

Fantastic family meal at Taj. Gourmet Night deal was great value with every course delicious. Friendly staff and buzzy restaurant atmosphere.
