Teppanyaki Japanese Restaurant in Birmingham

I visited a Japanese restaurant without doing any research. So far, I've had sushi and ramen, and they were all delicious. The chef seems to be from Hong Kong.

Tofu dish in the broth was divine- soft on the inside, crispy on the outside. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their dishes.

Everything was amazing. We really enjoyed being here. Food is absolutely lovely

The overall taste is okay, but not very authentic. There’s room for improvement, and the price is also on the high side.

Great food - I had the tofu bento box. It would be great if you could add more vegetarian options to the menu 🙏

It was my fiancés birthday on Saturday. We booked a table at 6 for 4 people. We arrived there 15 min before the booking, still at 7 we were not at our table yet. The starters arrived at 7:45! And my fiancée who is celiac and pescatarian received fried chicken on the although we explained her dietary requirements multiple times before arrival and at least 5 times at the restaurant! I spoke to the manager and requested her food to be cooked before the rest to prevent cross contamination. When the chef arrived at the table (he brought the meat and fish on the same tray - MAJOR CONCERN FOR THOSE WHO ARE ALLERGIC TO FISH!), asked for dietary requirements AGAIN even though it was written on his ticket by the manager, but we answered the question as we always want to make sure she doesn’t get sick. He started to cook, rice was ok, salmon was ok. Then he started to cook prawns, chicken, beef and lamb at the same time! Used the same utensils to mix fish and chicken, then put all prawns and chicken on my fiancé’s place even though we told him 5 TIMES by now that she doesn’t eat meat. But it still didn’t finish. He went on to cook beef/lamb again put both on my fiancé’s plate…. At the end of the evening she couldn’t eat anything. As you can imagine she was freaked out about the cross contamination and her meal was £50+ just for her. The manager came to the table afterwards as it was obvious we were not happy and I was noticeably worried about my partner and asked how everything was. We are not the kind of people who complain as we work in the same industry and understand when mistakes happen but I couldn’t stay quiet this time as there was an obvious blatant regard for her allergy and dietary restrictions. So I privately spoke to the manager about our discontent and even though she gave a 20% discount on our final bill after we paid she tried to cover the disaster saying that the chef was new and tried to hand us a fridge magnet and a celebrations chocolate… This was a MASSIVE slap in the face and embarrassing on the company. We never had such a horrible evening like this before, and imagine the frustration as it was my fiancé’s birthday. Particularly as she had a reaction minutes after leaving and is still sick 2 days later!!!! I hope after this night everyone got a full trainings section of allergens and dietary restrictions. I hope this would not happen again to other people but highly doubt anything will be done. I can say we will not be back and warn all of those with ANY dietary restrictions/allergies to stay far away from this place.

Amazing Japan style place with actual Japan sushi

Omakase set The sashimi is fresh and delicious, but the second time (in May this year) was slightly inferior to the first time (in March this year). I hope it can maintain the original level.

An other visit after a couple of years. Food was fantastic and the service was great. Will be back for sure.

Nice atmosphere, open kitchen, service was very quick and the food on the whole great, however in the salmon bento box my wife found a large worm in the salmon, this happens I know with fish but when pointed out to the staff they tried to pass it off as 'cabbage' and would not engage with us about it. So for that 1 star, I wasn't looking for a free meal, just acknowledgement that there was an issue. Really let down what otherwise was a lovely birthday meal and sadly means we won't be returning.

Fantastic food, it was some of the best sashimi I have ever had and the uni was really fresh and good. I would totally recommend! The fish is crafted with expertise and good sized slices. Great selection of food. We went for the Chefs sushi of the day and it was exquisite! There was a tuna sashimi cut that I had never had before and the sea urchin was quite an experience. It was not a cheap meal, but sushi very rarely is, the quality however was worth the money. It was all top quality ingredients.

The Tendon is delicious, has a Japanese taste, the environment is nice, and the price is very reasonable.

Delicious authentic Japanese food with warm hospitality.

I just wandered in out of the rain by myself and if I had realised how lovely it was I probably wouldn't have gone in! But it was very relaxed and friendly and very fast service. I had the oyakodon which was divine and very reasonably priced. I can't wait to back not by myself and not in a hurry for a really special dinner some time. The sushi and bento boxes look incredible.

Never disappoints, we went here for a quick ramen before the movies. Sirloin, baby spinach, chilli and garlic ramen. Of course couple of nigiri on the side!

Although the price is a little bit expensive, but the food and services are excellent. I think their sushi maybe the best in Birmingham, very nice restaurant and will definitely go again.

We celebrated our anniversary at Takumi, and it was an unforgettable experience! Nestled in the middle of Chinatown, the restaurant features beautiful décor that transports you straight to Japan. We opted for the tatami mats downstairs, which added an authentic touch to our meal. The focus on sushi is impressive, and each dish we tried was crafted with care and precision. The freshness of the fish was remarkable, and the flavours were perfectly balanced. It was a delightful evening that we thoroughly enjoyed. To complement our meal, we indulged in some Japanese whiskey, which was a fantastic choice. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, offering excellent recommendations throughout our dining experience. Overall, Takumi exceeded our expectations, making our anniversary celebration truly special. We can’t wait to return!

Really good food. Totally recommend ramen dishes. The atmosphere was a bit loud but not too much. The receipt came totally in Japanese you have no idea what is in there.

Brilliant authentic Japanese food here. Had the unaju don and some plum wine. Nice atmosphere, comfortable environment and short walk to the bullring. When back a few days later and tried the katsu don which was equally 👍

The worst experience ever, I'm allergic to eggs . I told when we booked also when getting drinks . They was just about to fry eggs when I explained again I am allergic. We got the at 5 . At 5.30 they gave us a cold salad with mayo I explained again I'm allergic. We got served last when we was there first. I don't think I would ever go there again service was so bad . Food was tasteless

Been there twice or three times already, price is more on expensive side, but definitely worth the money as you get really fresh sashimi, hot food is always cooked on point! Highly recommended as Asian ourselves. The cod was cooked to perfection, juciy and fatty and the flesh just fall apart and melt in your mouth. Tonkotsu in the ramen melt in your mouth too. Waygu beef and asparagus roll was very tasty with some mustard mayo sauce, some had caviar, some had tobiko. Katsu curry no matter pork or chicken you order, both taste equally good, heart warming when it's chilly outside! Our little girls wouldn't stop eating even after their tummy were full. That's how good their food is. Not to mention the atmosphere and decorations, very nice natural decors, with tatami seatings. Very clean place. Highchairs are available too. Cannot recommend enough!

INCREDIBLE. Incredible. Incredible. So authentic, delicious. Fish is truly top quality. I travel an hour just to come here. My favorite sushi place ever now. Service is excellent too, all you have to do is barely lift your hand and someone is there to attend.

Just passed by Birmingham and went to this amazing Japanese restaurant. The sashimi was very fresh, and the rice with flavor just matched perfectly. The ramen BBQ pork is so soft💜just loved it💜

The restaurant has really nice seating plan, and a great open kitchen view of the sushi. Me and my friend ordered small plates as we went along. The food is relatively quick to make a D very tasty. We ordered the chicken teriyaki skewers a few times and the meat is very juicy. The dragon roll was very filling, I would probably like a little extra sauce with it tho.

If Japanese people want to eat sushi in Birmingham, I think this is the place to go. The sushi prepared by a Hong Kong chef who trained under a Japanese chef is very delicious. It also looks beautiful. Japanese people, if you want to eat sushi in Birmingham, please try it.

In UK, being able to eat at this standard is pretty good; it satisfied my craving. Hopefully, they'll maintain this level without raising the prices.

I have had food here in the restaurant and as take-away on a number of occasions. The food, although slightly pricey is amazing and well worth the price! The service is always lacking which is why it's a 4 from me.

Amazing food with a great service.

This place caught my eye from the outside after seeing the seating layout, very genuine. We went for a meal for two. Ordered some sushi, really enjoyed the salmon & avocado Maki and the eel Nigiri, not so much the octopus one. Then we had Katsu Curry and Pork Belly Ramen, for which I'd recommend both for quality and value. Overall both the service and food were really high quality. I'd say it was cheap based on the quality, we spent around £50 for two people with no drinks.

Visited twice with friends. Thought the food was good but fairly pricey for what it is. We received bad service on both occasions, the wait staff were standoffish, rude and seemed to have little to no experience. At one point when they served our mains and we started eating, one of the staff came and moved my bowl around the table??

Food was great, price pp was very reasonable including drinks (non alcoholic) but compared to other Japanese in the area it was deemed expensive. Quality of the sashimi was excellent.

Food was amazing! Really some of the best sushi I’ve had. The service could be better but the staff were lovely. I did think the tea would come with a tea pot for me to refill my cup rather than wait for somone to refill it for me. And there was a mix up on the order however the staff kindly gave the plate on the house whilst they remade the correct one. The atmosphere is also good, with nice plates etc . Will come back !! :)

The sushi has never been great here. Either not very fresh or just does not taste right. Tried on multiple occasions and it’s never been amazing or good. The tonkotsu was great one or two times but has gone down since. The broth now lacks a cream depth of flavour in a traditional pork bone broth. The ramen is now subpar.

Food was fantastic. Really tasty and beautifully presented. Service a little slow and a few mix ups on the drinks order. Table space also a bit tight and elbow room not great. But overall very nice and would go back.

So I booked 3 weeks ahead for a teppenyaki table to take my nephew for his birthday treat and he was so excited to go. We planned a trip from 45mins away by train. We got there and restaurant was closed - gave it a few minutes and called to be told that the restaurant was closed for a further 2 hours due to a leak. I asked why no one had let me know as if I had known I wouldn't have travelled and the lady had nothing to say but say sorry but not very well. I asked for a recommendation of a Chinese restaurant that would be open and she sent their sister restaurant Shogun and I asked her to ring ahead for us as it was a bit of a walk. I checked my phone and it said they were closed and called her back and she said they were closed. So we went elsewhere but was so disappointed as if I had been advised that morning that there was a chance it wouldn't be open then we could have made other plans. Now I won't be going back again.

Amazing food. We had the wasabi prawns for starters 'delicious' the tempura on the prawns was so light and crispy and for mains we had the chicken teriyaki bento box again delicious the was cooked perfectly tender and juicy with crispy skin. I would definitely recommend popping in for a bite.

I had a reservation at 20:30. According to the confirmation email, they hold the table for 15min. I arrived there at 20:35 and they sent me away telling me the kitchen was closed

At last managed to eat here. Came the day before and they were still closed - to reopen today. Food was very good. Very well presented. Service was also very good. I think this is reflected by the number of people already in the restaurant. Highly recommended.

I dont usually write reviews on places, but Takumi deserves it ive been so many times and it is my chosen special occasion restaurant. The food is always the same perfect quality and cooked with so much care, the waiting staff are friendly amd although some might not talk, they are very prompt at refilling water or tea. The restaurant works very well with how the staff handle customers and it always brings me joy when im recognised and greeted with pleasant conversation. This is the Taste of Japanese food you know and love, theres no mistaking that. Cant wait to go back in a couple of months

Food was poor and not authentic Japanese, rather Chinese Japanese Fusion. Unfriendly staff and poor service, e.g. starter and main came at the same time.

It was a bit on the expensive side, the sushi platter "Tokyo" I do not think it is worth £60. Foie gras roll was really nice and creamy. Waitress chatting right next to our table, make it hard to have a relaxing meal.

Super fresh, delicious sashimi and nigiri. Service was a bit slow that night as they were at full capacity and had only one sushi chef; however the staff informed us of this when we ordered. We will definitely come back.

The food was good and a reasonable price too. Drinks were a little expensive but you can certainly pay more for less elsewhere.

Had wonderful food here previously but tonight the service let them down. Hot miso soup that was a side to the mains was served before the starters? Halfway through starters, main course meals were served. Glasses filled from the bottles by staff trying to cram the plates on the table! It definitely seemed that they wanted us to eat and go to clear the table for other customers. We slowed down eating on purpose! Takes ages to eat rice with chop sticks! No tip left tonight! Food was still good though!

After reading the reviews I mostly agree about the staff, they wasn't rude but ultra straight faced I didn't feel welcome. However once I tasted the scrumptious, food! The flavourful broth, lightly spiced with the tender mouth watering beef, and crunchy pickles I didn't much care about the waitresses 😂 the kitchen staff, smiled and said thank you on our way out which made up for it 🙂 OUTSTANDING food

The Japanese restaurant I visited was absolutely outstanding. From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted with genuine warmth and hospitality. The sushi was fresh, the tempura was crispy, and the flavors were delightful. Impeccable service and a delightful culinary journey. Highly recommended!

The food here was really good, has almost the same level with Japanese local restaurants. However, its service is kinda terrible. We order some plates, and the waiter came back to our table told us that they don’t have these plates. When we order something else, he said ok and then came back told us they cannot do it. The reason is because their chef need to prepare for dinner menu and don’t want to do it. It’s ridiculous as people came here for dinner are customers and same as us. If something unavailable, waiter should told us in advance or when we order it, not keeping came back and let us change orders. Poor service experience anyway. Food is good.

Really enjoyed it :). Would definitely recommend for some ramen accompanied by some sushi or another side, as most sides can tend to be somewhat pricey. Definitely worth it though!

Spent over £100 for 2 people at lunch but was worth it for the great quality of sushi! The teriyaki bento box was very nice and nicely presented. Would go again and waitresses were attentive to removing plates once finished and refilling our tea without us asking. However, we witnessed the waitresses placing their hands INSIDE the drink glasses to grab 4 glasses out of the cupboard at once. We found this unhygienic and was the only thing that let us down. Maybe not a big deal for others - but it is for us.

The attitude of the Chinese waiter with glasses is really bad，I feel like I'm not the customer, she's the god ，won't go again，If the boss wants to do a good job, so I suggest changing a waiter

Had a great meal here with some friends, food came quick, miso soup came with most meals (and was lovely). I had the salmon teriyaki bento box with some vegetable gyozas. Would recommend this place, 10/10 :)
