The Bargeman's Rest in Isle of Wight

Can never fault Bargemans. Always very consistent. Portion sizes always a plus! It’s great able to book a table now as is often very busy.

Nice pub. Slight poor relation in my opinion to the sister pub dairymans daughter.

A great place to go! Convenient parking right outside and then comfy chairs and fantastic seasonal decorations created a good atmosphere. Me and a large group went for lunch to celebrate a birthday and after ordering food arrived promptly and to a great standard. Food was all hot and well cooked and my Farmhouse Burger was honestly one of the best burgers I have ever eaten. I also ordered a sundae but as both main and desert helpings were large I could not finish the sundae despite it being very tasty. Servers were also friendly leading to a brilliant eating experience. Thanks to all involved at the pub for making a perfect birthday lunch. We will definitely be returning!

Hadn't been here for a few years, but our works do for Christmas was held here (21 people) and honestly the food was faultless, not a single one of us had a complaint. EVERYTHING was brought out in a timely manner and there were multiple requests for different foods. I believe 3 to 4 people asked for steaks, and all were cooked exactly as requested. Because the food was so good for Christmas we decided to have a family meal here (8 people) and again not a single complaint to be had, all food was again brought out in a timely manner and it was all cooked to perfection. 100% recommend. A lovely atmospheric pub overlooking the Marina in Newport. Friendly staff. Decorated nicely for Christmas. Lots of space inside and out with view of the water. Large and interesting menu with a specials board and a tapas board. We went for a lunch and then a dinner new years eve. Good choice both times. Easy to get to from centre of Newport and there is some parking out front. Well worth a try if visiting the IOW.

I'm convinced that whoever works in the kitchens at the Bargemans has a problem with vegetarians. For the second time in two months I was was given a meal that was nothing like what was described on the menu. "Spicy bean burgers smothered in tomato sauce and melted mozzarella" was actually two bean burgers with a spoonful of tomato sauce which had soaked into the bun and a little bit of half melted mozzarella underneath. I had less chips than everyone else as well. It looked like a kids meal. All for £16! It was apalling. A complete rip off and very disappointing. Especially as the rest of our group had amazing meals that were presented beautifully. I won't be eating there again.

Not what it was ordered a gammon steak,, chips peas. The meal was swimming in oil. Not impressed

The bargemans was always a place to go for a great pub meal with epic portions. The last 2 times I've been I've ended up with a sicky tummy the day after. Then the final visit I tried a carbonara and it was like a mushroom and white wine pasta- definitely nothing carbonara about it. For the price, you can get much better elsewhere. We've made it a rule now to visit for drinks on doggy walks, but we won't eat here again until the food improves. Staff are wonderful though and it's a great spot for drinks in the summertime next to the river.

I ordered the Texan Bean Chilli from the vegetarian section of the main menu. I was given the Texan Chilli from the meat section of the main menu. I brought this to the attention of the staff member called Steve. He insisted it was my fault and that I had ordered it wrong, despite specifying that I am vegetarian when I ordered it. I have been vegetarian for over 30 years. I understand that people make mistakes but it is disgraceful to pass the blame back onto the customer when the staff get it wrong. I was eventually refunded but lost my appetite, so I left hungry and angry. I will never eat there again.

Visited today, good quality food with generous portions. Between us we had a fish pie, southern fried Burger, Vegan Burger and jacket potato. Hot and satisfying.

We visited for our daughters birthday. Everyone had a nice meal but mine was not great. I had the falafel baguette with chips. The chips were lovely but the baguette was so bland. Five falafel on some beetroot and onion and a thin layer of houmous on the top underside of the baguette that had soaked into the bread. Not worth the 10+ quid it cost at all. Next time maybe serve the houmous in a pot.

Food always good, my only gripe is the tables by the food ordering station, you can't sit properly because of leg room between chair and table.

Everything was amazing, apart from it's a bit dark to read the menu.

We have loved the Bargeman's Rest for over 20 years. So much, that we often visit multiple times whilst on the Isle of Wight. The prices can be a little high, but the quality of food is excellent, there's a meal for everyone to choose from, and the staff are welcoming and helpful. The inside is really different to other restaurants and worth visiting. The Famhouse Burger and Garlic Butterfly Chicken are our favourites!

Arrived on a wet Monday afternoon. The interior feels so welcoming. Food was amazing, the best fish and chips I've eaten . Will definitely be returning. Would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area or any locals who haven't yet been

My daughter's Burger was excellent, unfortunately my potato wedges with cheese and bacon was very stodgy, I had expected the cheese to be like a cheese sauce, hence only a 3 star rating

Very popular local pub full of locals and (clearly) regulars. We (3) visited on a Sunday lunchtime but didn't need a full roast dinner, so just ordered the special firecracker chicken noodles (delicious!), ploughman's lunch (huge portion!) and Cheese sandwich (fab and served with the most delicious chips). Truly excellent, but booking is a must. We used the App they have to order and it worked well. Highly recommended.

the bargeman's rest is a beautiful example of a proper pub. staff are always pleasant and you are able to talk to them at ease, and the food is always amazing and made with great attention to detail and care. one of my favourite places to come for a classic meal. absolutely delightful.

The food was lovely, the staff were lovely and overall it was a great experience. I have been there a few times and all of those times have been perfect. My whole family loves to go there

We had a nice lunch here. Wheelchair and dog friendly. Staff were friendly and helpful. A choice of outside dining with a riverside view, or indoors with loads of interesting nautical memorabilia to look at. Hopefully we'll be back soon!

Sunday roast was really good. Awesome selection of non-alcoholic beers!

We came here for lunch and what a really good find, tucked away down by the river Medina in Newport. Good choice of meals and drinks. Polite staff and prompt service. meals arrived correct and hot and were lovely, will definitely visit here again next time we are on the island. ow one more thing they are dog friendly as our Akita, Bella can testify to.

This is a lovely pub - great location and a good choice of beers. Above all there is excellent customer service - I accidentally lost my wallet there on a recent visit. Not only did they find and look after my wallet for me, but they even swiftly posted it back to me on the mainland, keeping me updated throughout, which goes above and beyond. I'll definitely be in for a pint on my next visit to Newport.

I love it because it has a family area and a quieter area, although depending on occupancy everything may mix together but it is a good idea. The food is very delicious and in good quantity, sometimes the appetizer is more of a main course! The site is magnificent with views of the Medina River. It has a blackboard with the daily specials, I highly recommend looking at it before seeing the menu. The only drawback is that it doesn't have much parking so you will have to go to the paid parking lot about 100 meters away. The staff is very kind and friendly. We love going there for dinner

Pre booked the table, as it was the Classic car show weekend and wanted to make sure we got a table, rang up and not a problem booking, I know dogs are allowed but I wanted to make sure they knew we were bringing a dog. Arrived and was shown to our table very quickly by a nice gentleman. Good variety on the menu, we placed our order and the food came very quickly. It was hot and nice. We did not go for a pudding as all we could see on offer was an ice cream menu. If there were other puddings on offer we did not see a menu or specials board. Other than that a wonderful lunch with our dog and we will be back when we are back in Newport.

Ate at the Bargeman's Rest with a large group of friends. Table booked for 7.30. We arrived before then. Ordered our starters and mains. Lovely food and super generous portions. When it came to ordering dessert however we were told that the kitchen had closed and nothing was available. It wasn't late by any means. This was very annoying, and I feel it's pretty unprofessional to not at least come and tell your diners that if they wanted anything else then it needed to be ordered as the kitchen was closing. Having spent a lot of money and been seated at 7.30 you'd expect to be able to enjoy a 3 course meal......or be told if you couldn't. A great pity as it spoilt an evening which was otherwise enjoyable.

A great lunch at this quayside pub. I recommend the homemade chicken/bacon pie. The sausage and mash was very good too. Really friendly and thoughtfully run. Most interesting decoration with all things nautical. Would definitely go again.

The portions are not for amateurs, and more importantly it tastes great. Their selection at the bar is decent and the staff is nice and helpful. The atmosphere is great and the nautical theme gives the pub a nice touch.

Nice pub. Good food (actually home cooked whereas a lot of pubs say that it is when it isnt). Dog friendly. Nice outdoor areas.

Went there on weekday to celebrate a birthday , lovely place, and nice food. Only negative point was it was very dimly lit, and being away from the windows it was hard to read the menus, one of our party even used their torch from their phone to read it ( Specsavers has nothing to do with it) overall would recommend 👍

Been to this pub for lunch half dozen or more time over the past two decades when on the island and never disappointed by food. The staff are always so friendly, attentive and accommodating which seems to be a rare skill these days. Totally recommend that you try the watering hole.

Visited most recently in a large family group for a birthday meal. The party included children teenagers and OAPS. Food was served hot and tasty and in generous portions, service was also good. My only complaint is that we were obliged to sit in the family room and it was very dark in there (and also quite cold), could do with some lighting for tables away from the windows. Otherwise great all round, we return time and again to the Bargemans for many years now as we are confident we'll have a good meal at a reasonable price.

Called in for an evening meal over the weekend, was expecting microwave pub grub, but couldn't have been further from the truth, the chicken and mushroom pie appeared to be home made and was fantastic.

Second visit, went with my son for lunch and chill time. Sat overlooking the water, great food and drink. The food is served in large portions, really well presented and cooked, real pub food.

Just had a staff meal for 18 people here & the food & service were both excellent in a very pleasant & relaxed setting as well. Would thoroughly recommend this pub to anyone.

My second visit to the Bargeman's rest made me question why I'd left it so long to return, we loved it before and once again it didn't disappoint. We arrived on a Sunday lunch time by boat, conscious of the limited time afforded by the tides, but the suburb harbour master gave us brilliant timing advise leaving us 3 hours to enjoy the pub. With the clock ticking, in we went. We were immediately welcomed by the friendly guys behind the bar, and soon in possession of pints of Ringwood 49r, and Hobgoblin. We then grabbed a table outside overlooking the river passing by the many specials on the boards. We opted to maximise our time so starters were quickly ordered, Prawn appetiser and the Haddock & Leek Gratin. Both were lovely and of a decent size. Speed of service was also good. A couple more pints of the aforementioned preceded the main course arrival. One surf and turf burger and one double beef burger topped with chilli. Both were served with proper chips and salad. These were two well cooked, good portion, tasty burgers. A couple more pints were enjoyed overlooking the river as the team cleared the plates away. This young team are a credit to the pub, they actually seem to have been shown how to interact with people and deliver great but friendly service. From start to finish, the friendly bar guys, the comfy surroundings, the brilliant food and decent service, this was a great lunch visit. We'll definitely be back again soon.

Really lovely place, good food and great service!

Visiting family from Canada and tried to order food 5 mins after cut off time on a Friday evening (9:05). Gutted that there was no customer service to allow us to place our order and stay drinking for the rest of the evening. We even had our wedding reception here 22 years ago. Luckily Correo let us place an after hours order. Way to run a business into the ground. No wonder it was half empty mid summer.

The bargemans caters from individuals to very large groups. The food is served in a reasonable amount of time and to a high standard. The menu is quite comprehensive and caters to most people dietary preferences. The management and staff are hard-working and strive to make a positive experience for everyone. The bars are beautifully decked out with very interesting authentic items relaiting to the sea, charts, paintings ornaments, etc. There is a large bar area where children under the age of 14 can sit with adults, and there is plenty of outside seeting, which is set by the river medina. Small amount of carparking, but there are plenty of carparks nearby.

Always visit this place when I'm on the island. Nice for a beer by the marina.

Walked passed this place a couple times on way into Newport along the river from my hotel and after a really bad meal at another pub night before decided to visit here as looked a nice inviting pub on the river. I have to say I'm gutted didn't come here sooner I'm a fussy eater and the amount if items on the menu I could have it was hard to make a choice I went for the hot chicken ceaser baguette and was absolutely amazing. The staff couldn't do anymore for you and very polite snd friendly. The pub had a lovely atmosphere and decor was just amazing. Definately would come back to this pub again the food was excellent and the prices were extremely reasonable for the size of the portion. If you staying on iow you must visit here for a bite to eat

Never been here before and didn't really know it existed as sort of tucked away from the main street, but was so glad I took a chance and visited for dinner. Staff were friendly, warm and welcoming, the choice of availability on food was excellent with something for everyone and the meal itself was well worth every penny spent. Ordered a fish pie and the quantity for what you get is excellent. The decor of the restaurant had a nice theme to it and the price of drinks was very reasonable as well. Was visiting the Island for four day break and if anyone happens to be stuck for where to grab some good decent honest food, I'd recommend this place. Can't wait to come back when next over..

Great little pub, great drink options (I had the cask cloudy cider and it was amazing), great menu (I had the chowder on the specials board and it was great), nice decor inside the pub and nice seating area outside. Lovely staff and would recommend to all. We'd call in a lot if we lived a little closer (we where on the IoW on holiday).

Super service and good traditional pub food with more than ample portions. Freshly cooked to order but we really didn't have to wait long for our food. Service was friendly and helpful. Hard to find pubs like this on the mainland! Not sure what chain it is, but it is excellent! On the edge of the Medina, outside and inside seating, very much a nautical theme.

It is a great pub. Family and dog friendly with a nice outside space. 2021 update, still great food and beer. The banana waffles could win awards! 2022 As good as ever, rustic baguettes very good. Goddard ales and a choice of apple ciders on draught. Later in the year: Ringwood ales including Boondoggle on draught 2024. Now part of a small chain. Food is okay, beer and cider as good as ever.

Went to bargemens rest on sat evening with hubby, sister & brother in law . Very lovely welcoming pub although very noisy when we got there with a large group of youngsters drinking. They were very loud and swearing a lot. Thankfully they left and we ordered food. Little pricey for steak, although it was very enjoyable. Meals were good size and very hot.

We had our wedding reception in the Sail loft last month and had an absolutely perfect evening. From the time of booking and on the day, everyone was friendly and helpful. We were able to set up the day before and come and collect everything the day after our reception which was very helpful. The function room is a great size with its own bar. The buffet was great and served very efficiently. Thanks to everyone for their hard work on the night. Gem and Martyn

It's quite difficult to find if you don't have a satnav. But once you find it you'll be amazed. It's right near a lovely canal so it has a great view. You can sit outside but we went inside for something to eat due to so many seagulls. When you walk into The Bargeman's Rest it's like walking into the past. You're greeted with a spectacular view of a huge wooden ship's wheel when you're inside. Different seating arrangements including side private section with memorabilia of the past. The staff are friendly and helpful. You do need to go up to the bar to order your food and drinks which you pay before you eat. Delicious food with lovely friendly service. You get more for your money compared to other restaurants. Good value for money. Toilets are very clean. Child and pet friendly. If you're in Newport IOW definitely visit. Thank you to the staff for a lovely experience.

Great pub, great food, amazing staff. Clean and comfortable seating inside and out. Great live music when we visited. Great to visit via car, boat or walking.

Atmosphere was good. Meal was very disappointing Chicken was tough and was not able to eat it. Explained to waitress who brushed us off with “I’ll tell the kitchen” no further conversation. Not interested in feedback, I did not eat my meal. Very disappointed ☹️

Good location. Good food. Helpful friendly staff. Unfortunately my sister tripped on their step while holding a cup of boiling tea and now unfortunately she's pretty badly burned and scarred atm. Can I make a suggestion that you mark that step coming outside? In bright sunlight stepping out you simply cannot make out the end of the buff coloured step going into the buff coloured patio.

Very nice themed pub, great atmosphere. The food was good, and the people were friendly. Went on a Monday Bank Holiday for dinner and didn't need a reservation for 1 person.

10/10 would recommend, lovely decor with great service.. food took less than 10 mins to come out. Is a bit pricey but well worth it for the portions. I had a burger and chips and I was stuffed and I eat quite a lot!
