The Barrelman in Dundee City

Beautiful food. Excellent service and very friendly. Would highly recommend. Very welcoming staff. Could’ve been warmer.

Un sábado por la tarde nos encontramos con el Barrelman mientras salíamos de un museo local. No teníamos una reserva, pero nos ofrecieron dos asientos en una mesa de bar. Fue bastante cómodo, así que lo intentamos. Una camarera muy servicial nos dio menús y explicó que era servicio de mesa. Tomó la orden y regresó poco después con las bebidas. No estaba muy ocupado, pero bastantes mesas estaban ocupadas principalmente con parejas y algunos grupos. Había un ambiente agradable pero extrañas secuencias submarinas en pantallas salpicadas por todo el lugar. Los platos principales llegaron después de unos 20 minutos. Los pasteles de carne y cerveza estaban calientes y llenos de carne. Vienen con piel - en patatas fritas y algunas zanahorias y judías verdes. No mucha verdura en realidad, pero casi suficiente. La tapa del pastel de hojaldre es bastante estándar en estos días, pero no muy buena en comparación con una corteza de pastel tradicional adecuada IMHO. Pero la comida era llena, caliente y no está mal por £ 16 cada uno. Nos intrigó su pancarta de "comer, beber y explorar". No estoy seguro de lo que esperaban que exploráramos. En comparación con otros puntos de venta de alimentos que vimos por la ciudad, este parecía uno de los más acogedores y tenía un menú más completo que pudimos ver.

La comida y el servicio eran excelentes. Aunque voy a decir que es un poco caro para solo un pop-in de mitad de semana para mí. El pescado y las patatas fritas eran irreprochables (16 libras esterlinas). 00 aprox.), y Mi mucker dijo que el pastel de carne era "Fkn Brilliant" (£ 14. 00 aprox.) Buena comida. No hay mucho ambiente, ya que el lugar estaba vacío cuando estábamos en , pero creo que se pone más ocupado más tarde en el día. Con todo, una buena experiencia, sólo tendré que presupuestar un poco mejor antes de entrar la próxima vez.

The Barrelman también es un gran lugar para visitar. La comida está en el lado más caro que la mayoría de los lugares, pero sin duda es delicioso. Si usted también quiere bebidas más elegantes entonces este es el lugar para estar. Tiene una decoración encantadora y los televisores siempre reproducen videos de la vida marina que se suman a la atmósfera y son solo una alegría de ver. Me gustaría añadir un agradecimiento especial a nuestro servidor Max que fue muy educado y servicial. También dio una gran y alegre actuación de cumpleaños feliz mientras sacaba una galleta de cumpleaños para nosotros. Por favor, dele un gran pozo - hecho como su servicio es un activo para el negocio. La señora de allí con las gafas y la camiseta a rayas también era encantadora, pero nunca me dieron su nombre.

Lovely staff and brilliant atmosphere. Dog friendly and the food was really delicious. We had a table by the window with comfortable benches. Recommend this place for good honest food.

First time being in the barrelman and I will definitely be back, the service I got from the ladies at the bar was amazing. Candice and Rosie were very big help and very organised in getting myself and friends drinks. With the beautiful bar and great selection of drinks we weren’t too sure of what to order but with giving myself time of the day Rosie and Candice went through the options that they would think would be best for my family gathering, They were very chatty and friendly with small talk. Thank you for the great hospitality and certainly will have my business again.

Big thanks to Laurie, Emily and Jonny for excellent service and they were so friendly. All three were very attentive throughout the dinner and made sure we had drinks. Great atmosphere in a great setting. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Thanks again and hope to see you again.

Lovely bar/ restaurant. Staff friendly and professional. Service was excellent and pretty quick. We had Hebridean Benedict and steak frites from the brunch menu, both were delicious. We would definitely return.

only been a couple of times as I don't really enjoy pubs but this one was actually quite chill and didn't feel like I was in a pub

Edited to include yesterdays expeeience. We took 3 steps past the 'wait here to be seated' sign as there was no staff about. As soon as we were visible from the bar, a "little miss attitude" barked, 3 times in quick succession, that we needed to wait. Needless to say, we didnt, we about turned and spent our money elsewhere. Lovely pub, nicely decorated and refitted. The staff are very helpful and the atmosphere was great. We will definitely be back.

Worst pint of Tennents in the city and you only get 3 wings per portion ? They have a small covering of honey and that’s it. Go elsewhere. Waiter boy was very rude.

If you want a review of the bus stop outside it's an average bus stop but that's as close as I've been to this pub

I’d give the service 0 stars if I could! My wife and I decided to have a 3 course meal here as part of our little getaway in Dundee for a night - I wish we hadn’t. Where to start… The service was appalling from the word go - we really should’ve walked out as soon as we walked in - as soon as we were seated we seemed to be a neusance to the waiting staff, who must’ve been playing a game of who can ignore that table the longest. We (regrettably) ordered starters, mains and desserts, as well as a couple of drinks. We’d have ordered more if we’d actually been attended to; we were only asked for drinks orders once, as we were seated. When our food and drinks orders were taken, there were no basic manners - it’s not hard to reciprocate the word thanks to paying customers when they say it to you when taking their order. Once our starters were finished, our plates were taken away without a word being spoken by the waiting staff, then another waiter came along and just put our cutlery and napkins on a plate in front of us. I’m not saying I expected him to put the cutlery out, but I’d at least expect one single word to us(?!), even a ‘there you go guys’. We got our mains, which were lovely by the way - hats off to the chef, he must be the only one who cares - and our drinks were empty, but nobody came to see if we wanted any more. To make things worse, we’d actually finished our mains and STILL nobody had come over to attend to us, not to check if we needed anything, if we wanted more drinks, or if the food was ok. The food was quite spicy, too, so we really could’ve done with some water. My wife had to go up and ask the waiting staff for water herself, as they couldn’t be bothered doing their jobs and asking if we needed anything. We, perhaps stupidly, decided to have desserts - again, there were no manners in the order taking process. There was a large table of customers behind us that clearly took precedence over my wife and I, and I understand that they’re a bigger cheque to the restaurant, but we’re paying customers, too. Having said that, we were clearly forgotten about before that party came in. Again, the dessert was really nice, hats off the chef. The one thing that REALLY annoyed me was that I was having a coffee (which, by the way didn’t come with any sugar or a spoon, nor was I offered either) and I accidentally spilled half of it on the table and all down myself, and as you’d expect, coffee is quite hot!! The waitress clearly noticed I’d spilled it all over the table and down myself (I was wearing a white t shirt too, so it’d have been hard to miss!) but she actually looked over as soon as I did it and did absolutely nothing! Nobody checked if I was ok, if I needed a hand cleaning it up, nothing. I’m not expecting another coffee, I’m the one that spilled it, but I at least could’ve been offered some additional napkins so I could clean it up, as they certainly wouldn’t have bothered to offer to clean it up for me. Oh yes, after sitting for a further 10 minutes of nobody tending to us, we had to go to the bar and ask for the bill, as if we hadn’t, we’d probably still be sitting at the table being ignored right now! It’s safe to say we will never be back, and we’d never recommend this place to anyone.

Some of the best pub grub I've had in ages! I had the Korean pork belly and my partner had the mac and cheese. Both were delicious. The mac and cheese was the best I've tasted when eating out in a long time and my pork belly just fell apart it was so tender. Recommended!!

Love the quiz and do it every week. The guy who was doing it tonight is the biggest buzz kill. No music round! No scores! Just a general buzz killer on the mic. Random rules thrown in there. Just not a fan at all. I think next time he’s doing it I would leave. We watched lots of tables leave out of boredom from him and the slowest services on the bar. Why promote ordering at your table? When you can go to the bar order, drink your drink before the one you ordered online comes? Now this wasn’t a one time thing. This happens everytime. I love the space and the general vibes but the quiz with this guy just isn’t fun.

Moved to Dundee in September 2023 from London, and had The Barrelmans recommended to me by a friend. It's probably one of the best pubs in Dundee for food and drink. The food never disappoints. The loaded fries with brisket has become my go-to dish. Their customer service is spot on, and the staff are very friendly and attentive.

Friendly service, skilled bar tenders. Food is a 'cut above'. You will not be disappointed!

We were a party of 8, celebrating a graduation and from start to finish the service was fantastic- despite it being busy. Food was of great quality and service quick!

Ordered Korean belly pork with rice, the portion size wasn't huge for the price, but it tasted good. It was early evening and pretty quiet but I wouldn't judge the place on that. The service was good.

Booked a table for the Scotland V Germany game and for food before. Was only able to book a 2 hour slot online but called up and staff were really helpful. Even moved the table beside a TV. Good atmosphere and excellent food as always.

Quiet, we were in on a Wed mid- afternoon. 3rd visit 😎

My friends and I decided to visit on the 15.05.24 however the next day we had started feeling extremely sickly and eventually finding out we had food poisoning. The only thing we had eaten the day before was the barrellmans salad, loaded fries, katsu curry and a few sides. As well as our usual breakfast in the morning. So we think nothing of it and just a one time thing. We return to the barrelman today 5.6.24 and order 2 burgers, a couple side dishes and a Ceasar salad as the portion sizes were amazing. Fast forward to the next day, we all start throwing up from about 2am and have one again been diagnosed with food poisoning. Later in the evening I get a call from a local Barista shop owner who lives in dundee and commutes, we discover that the meals in the barrelman, although are "freshly" prepared in house, this is not always the case for certain meals. We loved the environment, the staff were amazing, the drinks were really good, excellent hot chocolate however the food needs to be looked at.

After a couple of pretty mediocre Scottish restaurants we really hit the jackpot with this one. The katsu burger and braised beef sandwich were amazing but especially the barrelman pie was extraordinary. 10/10 would come again!

Came here for a bite to eat at dinner time, had a look online and seemed like a decent place to stop off at. Both me and my partner ordered a fish and chips. When it arrived visually there was very little chips. Then i noticed how greasy and oily the fish was! The chips underneath were soaked in oil. Fish had an oily unpleasant texture. It was disgusting. I sent it back and was offered to have another thing on the menu. Ordered a beef burger, when it arrived it was quite good, but nothing too special. Puddings were ordered, sticky toffee pudding. The cake itself was very dry and lacked flavor, the sauce made up for it.

We had a wonderful evening and the service and food was great Our waitress Kimi was professional and pleasant. It was a fun evening

Visited with my girlfriend on a Monday night. The atmosphere was great and we were pleasantly surprised with the food. I’d ordered the philly cheesesteak which was out of this world and the missus had the smaller plate of fried pickles which were incredibly moreish! The lad behind the bar was an absolute gentleman and couldn’t have been any more pleasant. Will definitely be returning!

Popped in here spontaneously for lunch with my partner last month - so glad we did! Really great atmosphere, friendly and attentive staff, and the food was delicious too (we had the steak pie and macaroni). Lots of options on the menu (both food and drinks-wise) and the service was super quick! Will definitely be back if in Dundee again 😃

Recently visited for my sisters 30th birthday for a lunch with friends, parents and my toddler. The drinks and food were delicious and portion size was fab! The kids menu was excellent value for money. The staff were friendly, professional and attentive and allowed my brother in law to provide a cake and do the happy birthday song and surprise for my sister. It was a lovely afternoon and I would be back and recommend to others visiting Dundee.

Very good pub, no TVs so you can actually talk! Food was great I had Hebridean loaded fries and my only criticism would be the haggis was squares instead of just being normal served haggis? In saying that the food was delicious as was my wife's Barrlemans burger.

Well, after a very disappointing first visit where it took 45 minutes to get served, I decided to give this place another chance after being persuaded by my daughter. As a party of 4, we were treated to a very different experience. Friendly staff, excellent service & each 2 course was very much enjoyed. Definitely worth a visit.

Not tasty, slow, they forgot the salad, the steak was overcooked. True, they later gave me a 10% discount as an apology.

Tried to enter was denied entry for a tin of juice but someone walked in right after and was allowed entry not very professional at all, bouncer saw his friend and decided he could get in but I could not ? When i was stone cold sober to add will not be going back

This was the 3rd time I had visited this restaurant with my husband. but in this occasion was let down with the staff. The food and atmosphere of the place was good but none of the female staff cracked a smile only when chatting to each other. Wasn’t offered desserts or anymore drinks either and couldn’t catch the eye of any of the waitresses for the bill. We left no tip.

Whilst our visit to Edinburgh, We chose it cause of it ambience. Very lively. They even have games where everyone can participate and win something or coupons. The place is very famous with the local.

Was looking for a straight forward pub to enjoy an evening meal and found The Barrelman. Amazingly friendly and welcoming staff who were always on hand to take an order or to clear empties. The food and drinks menu were full of fun and interesting items, encouraging me to order a couple of cocktails, as well as Haggis bites and a burger.

Fab family visit. The food and service was fantastic. Can't recommend the steak pie enough, it was so tasty. The katsu bao bun was also a hit with the teenager. Reasonably priced for food and drinks. The servers were all really friendly and nothing was too much bother. Definitely recommend to all.

Great service, food and atmosphere

Ordered the philly cheese steak, fish and chips and the fried pickles. The cheese steak was okay, but just okay. The fish and chips was awful. Fish presented on thick cut chips, with the underside of the fish entirely soft and had coated the chips in a thick layer of grease. The fish itself was flavourless, the batter likewise had no flavour except grease, which in turn left a pool on the plate. The fried pickles were likewise very greasy, but they at least were tasty. Full restaurant prices for what feels like simple, cooked from frozen pub food. All in all for a place we'd heard such great things about, it was just disappointing. On a good note that staff were friendly and helpful and a credit to the venue.

A nautical themed rum bar with a delicious selection of food. Have been here a good few times and have not been disappointed once :) The venue hosted a 200~ after-party of students and technical professionals that fully enjoy a drink and the staff made sure everything ran smoothly

Visited with disabled friend for lunch. Disabled friendly and staff opened doors in order my friend could access the pub without any problem. Menu was varied and service was quick. We both chose fish and chips and were not disappointed. House wine was good choice...

Service was appalling. Waited 20 minutes for someone to take a drinks order. Then another 10 minutes for it to come. Then took the food order, 20 minutes for it to come (I'm ok with that) asked for more drinks when the food arrived, drinks didn't come, had to re-order them. Quick enough to bring the bill when asked!!

I was at the Barrelman for my birthday dinner with my wife and kids. The service was great from Kimi, friendly and fast. The menu is fantastic. I had the best Philly cheesesteak I've ever tasted and I've had one in New York on Broadway....

I recently celebrated my 21st birthday at the Barrelman and I cannot recommend them enough! From the decorations to the amazing bar staff, everything was perfect! Special mention to Jonny, Max and Bea for the bar service!! I’ve had non stop compliments about this venue...

Quiet for a Saturday lunchtime, but a steady stream of customers arrived while we were there. Staff were pleasant and attentive. Food was good, I had a posh finger and finger sandwich while my partner had a rather tasty loaded fries with haggis. Nice enough place to wile away an hour, but a little soulless. Aquarium videos on the TV were a nice talking point.

First time properly visiting Dundee and this place did not let down. Wow, what a pub! Beautiful decor and incredibly talented staff. We opted for the Fish & Chips and Hebridean Loaded Fries which were HUGE. Nowhere in Scotland serves portion sizes this big and still taste this good. To drink I had one of the best pints of Guinness I’ve had in a while. My friend ordered a cocktail and had 2 more after that it was that delicious! I was served by Jonny & Lea (both always smiling & laughing, amazing to see) who were just marvellous, complete professionals who deserve so much credit. Jonny especially was very informative and certainly was a help when suggesting places to go while we are visiting. I see 1* reviews about it being too busy which is ridiculous to me, people should be ashamed to leave pubs & restaurants reviews based on volume of service. It’s a testament to the team that they are so popular in my opinion and this should be rewarded instead of receiving mindless reviews from total numbskulls.
